Grieve, Reflect, Remember

For obvious reasons, our traffic numbers went through the roof yesterday - over 11,000 visits. And we moderated almost 600 comments, nearly 400 of which were in the post for Officer Francis.

We'd give up every single one of them to have Officer Francis back among the living.

We deleted almost thirty that we felt were inappropriate including those second guessing the officer's decision, blaming equipment, reverends, politicians etc., and those preaching revenge and damnation on the criminal who took our brother from us. Sorry if yours was one of the thirty.

We know there's going a bunch of second guessing going on. A lot of it is going to cause hard feelings among fellow officers. Some will want to defend Officer Francis' memory from any and all deprecations. Some will want to derive valuable lessons for younger and less experienced officers in order to avoid more casualties. Both are valid viewpoints.

We ask only this. Put away the second guessing, the arm chair quarterbacking, the "what if..." scenarios for the time being. Grieve, reflect, remember. From everything we've heard and read about Officer Francis, he'd want to educate other officers. If the readers want an open post at some point in the future to civilly and calmly discuss the events of the day, we'll provide that. If not, we won't. Civility and calmness are usually the first things out the window in an Internet debate though, and we don't feel like being referees right about now. The Department is hurting too badly right now.

Out of respect for the family, friends and Department at large, not until after the funeral.

Although Ive never met officer Francis, Im am devestated by his loss. I feel as though a member of my family has passed, and it reaffirms by admiration for my fellow officers. With so much dissention among each other lately, I feel as though its tough times like this that bring us together I will be praying for this officers family, and for all my brothers and sisters.

well, this loss has made me VERY angry!!!!!!!! where is all the anger or outcry in our city?

I'm not trying to play quarterback, but when are you guys going to get UP-TO-DATE equipment? Naperville PD has ... special equipment that makes it much more difficult for civilians to grab their gun. When is someone going to look after you???????

I PUT THE LAST TWO OFFICERS DEATHS ON THE CITY.
One officer was working at 60 to provide for the medical needs of his family. He was forced to work in order to survive. Furthermore, the city is so short on manpower he was forced to work 99.

The other officer was forced to live in the ghetto because housing is so outrageous in this shithole. As a result he was slaughtered like a dog in his alley.

Sleep well gentlemen. You are not forgotten. You gentlemen are the only reason I'm able to hold my head up high in these rotten times. Thank you both for reminding me that in spite of all this day to day petty bullshit that there are still heros left in this universe. WE ARE STILL THE ONLY BARRIER LEFT BETWEEN ORDER AND CHAOS. Thank you both for you courage and example. We will not shame your memories.

Maybe.... just maybe if the city took better of its officers both of our fallen would be here today.

It doesn't sound like you plan to, but please don't quash any "After Action Review" of what happened in the incident involving Ofc. Francis.

It's imperative that the review take place, so that others can learn from the mistakes (if any) of Ofc. Francis. Please let the information get out about what really happened.

We (you) owe that to the brotherhood, so that we may prevent the same thing from befalling a brother officer.

RIP Ofc. Francis...

Thank you SCC for spreading the kind words and thoughts on this subject. You are bringing comfort to many by asking them to reflect on the person and not the circumstances.

How or why we lost Richard Francis is not as imporant right now as what is needed to help many through this tragic time.

The absolute power of kind words, prayers and comforting thoughts are under-rated.

I have ran into many southside officers who have never had the chance to meet this officer but are just as sadden by his sudden and needless loss as those who had worked side by side him each day.

In due time, the circumstances of this incident will be released and reviewed. I can only hope that any information that comes to light will prehaps prevent another loss of this kind.

My fellow Officer Richard Francis:

Although we have never met, never talked or never crossed paths, I grieve for you. I grieve for your family, your friends, your fellow officers and all the other people that you have touched, help and shared the experience of life with.

I pray that with the help of all those that are thinking of you and your family, in some small way, the deep sadness of your sudden loss is lessen a bit.

Time may heal one's wounds. But time will never stop others of thinking of you and praying for you.

I truly hope the Gates of Heaven are open and awaiting you. You served so many in times of trouble and hurt... may Heaven be a place where you can rest now. You and so many other officers deserve the peace that they never have each day.

I hope the guys at 019 help Norman out with this one. Its going to be real hard on him. Hard on us all but especially him.

I have sent this message to the Mayor’s Office and the newspapers. I have given my name, address and phone number let’s see who contacts me!!

It saddens my heart to know that the Official City of Chicago web site has nothing about Officer Francis Murder. I am a Chicago Police Officer and question why I should put my life on the line for a city that doesn’t even HONOR it’s fallen. Not 1 line on the web site, not even the Mayor’s comments, NOTHING.

Now I realize why citizens don’t respect the police like when I was a kid.
City officials should lead by example.
I remember when I was a kid and our neighbor who was a Chicago Police Office was shot The MAYOR went to the family and paid his RESPEST for the sacrifice that the family has and will continue pay for this city.

We as police officers will RESPECT and HONOR him even if the city that he served and protected for 27years will not!

I attempted to post this opinion on the WGN Morning News message board but it would not allow it. It is a letter that is self-explanatory:

During the 7:30 A.M. broadcast, Valerie Warner reported that “questions remain” as to why a Chicago Police Officer who was killed did not wait for backup before [engaging the woman who would eventually disarm and kill him].

Naturally, the alleged source of this question was not identified. But the copy editor sure ran with the choice of words because it implies some level of fault on the officer’s part. Yeah, let’s run with that one guys. Blame the victim.

Well, here’s your answer: Police Officers don’t have the luxury of waiting for backup! Officers access a scene and do their best to restore order. Backup can be requested but unfortunately it doesn’t always get there soon enough. Officers cannot stand on the sidelines while events unfold before their eyes.

Could you imagine the outcome if this woman had hurt someone while the officer was just standing around and not taking action? Perhaps WGN would have the officer simply drive away and park a safe distance from the scene until backup arrives.

The manner in which you reported the story is another example of the media bias against police officers. Chicago is a violent city and the police should be put on a pedestal rather than attacked by those who are not charged with encountering the dreds of society on a daily basis. Shame on you WGN Morning News!

Father Tomasino.

From an LA times article months ago:

"Los Angeles SWAT Officer Randall Simmons was remembered and honored today in a funeral attended by over 10,000 people and broadcast on local TV"

Wouldn't that be something if that could happen for Ofc. Francis. If I remember correctly the funeral was carried on all the local broadcast channels that day.

I can't imagine the pain and sadness that Ofc. Francis' family must feel, but I think it would be a fitting tribute if this city, which is so quick to judge CPD, could see its thousands strong come together in a sea of blue to honor a man who made the greatest sacrifice a police officer can give. Maybe then, and its a huge maybe, will the everyday joe citizen understand what it takes to be a police officer.

I am feeling great loss with the murder of Officer Francis. I did not know him but feel the loss within the Police community.

I do want to add that outside of the Police community there has been not enough of acknowledgment of a terrible wrong that has occurred.

Not one civilian that I know has spoken a word to me about it or has said anything within my earshot. I am left wondering why that is? Has the constant focusing on bad news and harping on contract type issues left Police men less valuable in the eyes of the community?

Officer Francis was a proud American Vietnam War hero, who served his country so well, He was a dedicated law officer to the city of Chicago and inspired many who met him with his steady upbeat attitude and earthy sense of humor. Met Francis in 019, as I was going in to work days, he was coming in off midnights and engaged me in some funny and lighthearted conversation, made me laugh...as he did every time I saw him since, great way to begin and end a tour of duty! His beloved wife and family and fellow officers will miss him so much. Hope his family feels all the joy of his well lived life, and that it greatly also impacts his fellow officers in a positive way. How he passed and went to Heaven in a split second is nothing compared to a life time of living with love and laughter, remembering the joy of Rick Francis. God bless his family. 019 SGT TH

I also hate to admit that this whole thing only seems to be affecting some of the p.o's on the watch. I think this might have to do with the city hiring anyone who will apply, thus getting the people who decided on a new career at the age of 35. I hope i'm just assuming things here.

Point well taken Office.

My point is not to detract a moment from our fallen brother - a protest isn't what I had in mind.

Despite J-Feds assertions of not reading the blog you can be sure someone IS reading it and reporting to him. So... to whoever is reporting to them - tell them out of respect - don't show up.

*REMINDER* - some younger officers have never had to do this. To go your local uniform store and purchase a mourning band for your star. They sell them for a quarter I think and the money is donated to the Gold Star Families.

I expect the arrangements for our Brother should be released soon - open your schedules, get your dress blues ready. Show this uncaring City, Media & Reverends how WE honor one of our own.

All we have is each other.

*note to SCC - Thank you for this outlet for venting, gossip, humor and now grieving. To say I've been touched by the posts from all over the country is an understatement. At this moment and time - I am PROUD to be CPD.

Also, if SCS wouldn't mind, possibly could you borrow the photo of the officers saluting. It gave me chills and truely shows how deep the 'Thin Blue Line' really runs.*

In 018 we called him "Ricky," but I often called him "Mr. Francis" out of respect. When I heard that an Officer had gone down I prayed that it would be know one that I knew. (I know that sounds so selfish but I weep for every slain officer.) When I heard the name Richard Farncis I prayed it was not my Mr. Francis.

A short while later I was contacted by another 018 Alum who verified the terrible truth. Although I had not seen Mr. Francis in years I remember him fondly as a kind police officer who was always there to help. He truly was the embodiment of what we called a "Gentleman."

I am praying for the Francis Family and every member of the CPD during this terrible time. God Bless You All, and Please Stay Safe!!!

Fact not Quarterbacking:

Officer Francis was working a one man car. He shouldn't have been. All 3rd and 1st watch cars should be 2 person. Odd person out should be a hospital car etc... That's how it used to be. The days of a 10-99 car on those watches in this town I thought were long gone.

Retired 11 years..............

Went to work at ORD today - flags at full staff.
Forced myself to calm down - called Mayor's Office. Rude-azz sec'y told me this was a "police matter."
??????
I said, "Really? Because when Stroger died, it took ten minutes for Daley to order the flags down."
She snapped, "Call the Police PA office."
I did. They were appalled that the flags at ORD were full-staff. I said, "Ya know, it's pitiful that McDonalds has their flags down and O'HARE AIRPORT doesn't."
They agreed, and I called airport ops. They gave me the number to the people in charge of the ORD flags.
I called and told them to lower them, that they were being lowered citywide. Which SHOULD be the case, even if it's not true.

FWIW, CPD Media office is calling the Mayor's Office right now to find out what in the hell is going on and who dropped the ball.

Fellow Officers,

It has been a sad few days for the department, but we will go on and that says much for the men and women of the Chicago Police Dept.

Take a look at this site, the Officer Down Memorial. It already has Officer Francis on their site and you can take a look at the other officers who have gone down in the line of duty recently.

SUGGESTION: Every union rep should wear a t-shirt with Officer Francis picture & star on the front and all the stars from our fallen members on the back.

Where were the sirens, mars lights flashing, bdu's, m4s for Officer Francis?

Bottom line: BLUE SHIRTS respond to all 911 calls...the BLUE SHIRT is all you need, nothing flashy...manpower needs and a decent contract giving RESPECT for a vocation that involves life or death.

NON-IOD LIMITED DUTY FORUM 07/02/08

First Vice President Bill Dougherty Unit 166 Rep. Inez Riley will conduct an open forum meeting in the multi-purpose room located at CPD Headquarters on July 8, 2008 at 1700 hrs. This meeting will address the City's contract proposal regarding Non-IOD officers on Limited Duty Status. Any officer may attend this meeting, but all officers in Limited Duty Status are encouraged to attend.

WHY IS THIS BEING HELD AT HQ, WHY NOT AT FOP HALL? Question: Has an agreement already been made & now it is being presented as a forum so it can be stomached when it comes to pass?

This was written by Abraham Lincoln during the civil war, and you may have heard it in Saving Private Ryan. Lincoln wrote this to a mother who had lost her son in battle. I think that it is appropriate here:

I would like to dedicate it to the family of Officer Francis:

I edited it a little, with apologies to President Lincoln.

"I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the citizens and fellow Officers of the city that he died to protect. I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."

Yours very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln."

I have been on the job for 23 years, and the tragic loss of one of us hurts as much today as it has every time someone goes down. I go to work every day and hope that every officer who starts a shift sees the end of the shift. This is painful beyond words.

God Bless the Men and Women of the Chicago Police Department.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

RIP Brother. We will carry on for you.

I am so disturbed at what has happened to our job, no manpower and no solutions coming. Rick wouldn’t want any fuss made over him, perhaps we will all come together to get the solutions to the bosses now, in his memory.

An Angel In The Sky Must Leave His Place Of Rest,
Gently Tucking His Wings Beneath His Armored Vest.
For Duty Has Called, There Is Much Work To Do
Little Did He Know, This One Is Dressed In Blue.

Arriving On The Scene, He Knows Just What To Say,
"Follow Me, Fallen Brother, I'll Show You The Way."
"Your Duty Has Ended, Your Work Is Now Through."
"Come Hang Your Hat Beside Mine, I'm A Cop, Too."

Just an ordinary citizen but one of the many who appreciate what you did and what all Chicago Police Officers do every day.

God Bless You and Rest in Peace Officer Francis.

I just want to thank all personnel that responded and investigated Officer Francis' murder. Carrying on professionally in the immediate aftermath must be the hardest thing that a police officer can do. My niece is the bus driver that flagged Officer Francis down. She is horrified and blames herself for what happened. The coppers at Area 3 and the 19th District did their best to calm her and reassure her that it was not her fault. Thanks to all again. Your response to Officer Francis' heroism is why I've been proud to wear the Star for 31 years.

A lot of the guys are making a good point. They don't want Daley, fat Ike or J/fed at the funeral.

I agree with there anger towards the present administration and the lack of help on the street.

But lets look at the over all picture. What are we going to accomplish.

Any protest against daley or j/fed will only be an insult to R. Francis and those that luv him and those like me who will cherish his memory. This would not be the rite forum to show our displeasure with daley and the moron j/fed.

The media is picking up on the moral problem by reading our blogs.

RIP my brother R.Francis, you are with God now, you won the battle.

7/03/2008 12:25:00 AM

Well said... I completely agree with this....

As alot of you might remember, Brian Strouse's mother, during her Eulogy to Brian, confronted the stuttering midget and put him on the spot. Basically what she said was, and this is not verbatim, "My son died with out a contract, give these hardworking men and women in blue what they deserve, a contract". The mourners errupted in tears and applause.

I feel it is up to his family, not the troops to make this call.... This of course is my opinion.

Show up in force as we always do, and pay our respects to truly one of Chicago's Finest. Mourn his death, and celebrate his life and memory. He is a great example of what a Chicago Police Officer is.

I am a fellow officer of Rick's Recriit Class April 1981, I remember all the funny times we had in school and at various other get togethers. He is/was a special kind of man. One that any parent, sibling or friend would be proud to say they loved. I'm very saddened that he came so close to walking away from this job with all of the benefits that he earned. To all of my brothers and sisters out there, remember what we learned the first day in the academy. Take care of yourself and your partner and go home to your family. Rick has gone home to our Lord, he will be missed.

From what I gather from all the comments and articles is that Officer Francis was a great officer and a great guy. If he had survived this encounter he would probably be the 1st to talk about what went wrong. Most of us do it anyway after something goes to shit. Not one of us can say that we handled every situation perfectly. Everyone of us can think of a situation that placed us or a partner in danger, but got lucky.

Because of him you will respond differently to a job, especially if 99. His death will save lives. Just like the trooper in the video we've all seen.

Want to honor him? Learn from him. Teach others.

Because of him, I wear the badge with pride.

I've never met you, but oddly, I miss you.

Today i had the honor of being present at a ceremony for officer Gordon who was killed a few years ago when his squad was struck by a drunk driver. This ceremony was requested by his family to honor his military career and to receive his medals after a 4 year wait. These medals were obtained with the help of Sen. Derbin. With that being said, Sen Derbin began his speech about the service of officer Gorden's military and police career. When the speech was over I found it strange when he asked if there were any questions. Then I found out why. This was a set up between the Sen and the media to hijack a memorial for a slain officer and turn it into a political sound bite for the over turning of the supreme court ruling on the right to bare arms. Sen Derbin should be ashamed of himself. This is the most classless example of self promotion I have seen in a long time.

As we mourn the murder of Rick Francis, I want to share some memories with you guys from over 38 years ago concerning the use of 10-99 units during the hours of darkness.

Before making homicide dick from 011 in 1970, I was briefly assigned to the old Area 3 Burglary, 3900 S. California Ave. Virtually all of my time was spent in 007.

One of my old Fillmo' buddies and a great copper, Kenny Kaner, had also transferred to da Wood.

In the early morning hours of June 19, 1970, working solo, Kenny was writing up a "missing" while parked at 74th & Union.

In a drive-by, one of 5 young male occupants blew Kenny's head off with a 12 ga. shotgun and took his holstered revolver.

Meanwhile, two blocks north on Union, oblivious of what had just occurred, 7th Dist. Tac Officers Carl Malik and Ed Brown curbed a auto with 5 occupants. They had observed the driver and the front passenger switch seats while the car was moving. Ed approached the auto with holstered weapon while Carl stood back, gun drawn. Ed then saw a revolver and struggled with one occupant, managing to disarm the perp. A passing squadrol then told Malik and Brown that an officer had just been shot at 74th St.

In what I regard as one of the greatest pinches imaginable, Malik and Brown had just caught the fleeing cop-killers and recovered both the shotgun and Kenny's gun. What an incredible fuckin' pinch!

The point of my story is what I saw in 007 the very next night. Most of the 007 midnight cars were scheduled to be 10-99.

To the man, ALL officers refused direct orders to hit the streets as one-man squads. The W/C called in then Cmdr. Harold Miles and the street deputy. These guys stood rock solid and again refused direct orders to man 10-99 units.

What a bunch of stand-up coppers! I do believe a paisan sergeant named "John" with HUGE cojones organized the troops.

God! I was so proud of those guys!

I just spoke with Carl and Ed, both happily retired in good health, to verify this account.

The following day, then Supt. Jim Conlisk ordered that all patrol and traffic units city-wide be manned by two officers during the hours of darkness.

Carl, Ed and I would like to believe that Kenny Kaner's assassination changed CPD manpower deployment forever.

We'll let YOU make that call!

May God bless Rick Francis, Kenny Kaner and all of our heroic fallen officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I also didn't mean to accuse you of bragging about this site. You've put a lot of work into it, way more than that other "official" site run by Camden and Henry that still doesn't have word #1 about Officer Francis. What a bunch of strokes those two are.

Officer Francis stopped to help your niece because it was in his blood to do so. Oficer Francis did not stop to think if he had a contract, he did not stop to think of the current level of morale on the department or of who was in charge of the department at the time. He did not stop to think of how many years he had on or how close he was to retirement. Officer Francis immediately took action for the same reason he did so 27 years ago..In his soul he knew right from wrong and he knew he was soldier of good and a warrior against evil. I as all of you am saddened beyond belief. I am also envias of Officer Francis for the rewards he is now receiving in his after life.

ONLY officers who have worked the street in patrol responding to 911 calls as a BLUE SHIRT understand fully the tragedy AND travesty under which Officer Francis succumbed to.

Tragedy in that this mentally ill person due to government's mis-government (shutting down mental institutions, lack of mental health provisions, etc.money being spent elsewhere like future olympics 2016) was homeless on the street like so many that are out there right now like her, walking time bombs, which patrol encounters countless times.

Travesty in that CPD fully manned would have prevented this Officer's death, calling for backup that should have been his partner at his side, this Officer with his 27 years having worked the street called out for help which patrol knows that seconds feels like 'forever' when fighting for your life.

Today, Jfed was shown in the media visiting this Officer's family with condolences, the media even reported the 100 club presenting a check naming the amount of $50,000 and another check in the amount of $10,000. Why all this media making such a big show after the fact. Why tell the public the monetary amounts given to this family...does this mean everything is NOW OKAY? Ooooh, look how the family is being taken care of after all.

Officer Francis would have preferred to have enjoyed his retirement for possibly at least the next 25 years, with his family, with his dogs, riding his motorcycle, his friends, recounting his life at some point WHEN IT WAS TIME TO LOOK BACK.

Where was Jfed making public appearances explaining the rash of police shootings, the dangers of patrol, defending his department, afterall he accepted being our leader...he is a federal asswipe for the mayor, that is all...he is a firm believer of violation 14, his silence says it all.

All of you who are working patrol, I salute you, stay brothers & sisters backing each other up, keep your camaraderie of mutual street knowledge, esteem, loyalty, & affection even against the current of our present times. God bless you.

Not one civilian that I know has spoken a word to me about it or has said anything within my earshot. I am left wondering why that is? Has the constant focusing on bad news and harping on contract type issues left Police men less valuable in the eyes of the community?

As a member of a VERY Police Family and many Police friends, all I can say is sometimes its hard to enter the inner circle of the brothers and sister in blue. Sometimes your family and friends feel left out and we don't know what to say to you. But know we are here for you and want to console and help in any way we can. We may not know how you feel but know we are affected too , it could have been my Dad, Brother, cousin, friend. The thin blue line is so special we respect it and we may be silent but we are here for you. Let us be your back up.
My condolences to you all, and THANKS for doing what you do!!
God Bless the Francis Family.

for those of you who are not aware of the details or have not seen the video or have spoken to the officers who were there on scene. It happened in a matter of seconds. Back up was there and everyone including Rick Francis did all that they could. We have all worked 99 and many times by choice. The officers who were on the scene, and Rick's family will be doing enough second guessing. Unless any of us were there NO One should judge. This family is lost. They need our support, not only in these days, but more so in the days to come. Every officer reading this, remember to take time in the months to come to send the family a card, or extend a kind gesture to them. the 019th district will get anything needed to the family. The ultimate show of gratitude would be to remember his wife and daughters in the days to come.

You've pulled quite a bit out already, maybe only your forehead left to remove.

Sort of like a reverse birthing.

Just remember to shampoo twice and rinse until the water runs clear.

Ya gotta give this kid credit SCC. After reading this blog for awhile now it is uncommon for anyone to come out and accept blame for a stupid drunk comment. Most of us have done and said stupid things while drunk, and we all handle this horrible news in diffrent ways.

RIP Officer Francis

This was a set up between the Sen and the media to hijack a memorial for a slain officer and turn it into a political sound bite for the over turning of the supreme court ruling on the right to bare arms.

--------------------------------

There's a lot of politics involved with the police memorial.
Trust me, I know...

Leave it to that scum Sen Dick Durbin to turn a solemn event into something to further his own agenda. Last December there was a memorial service at Our Lady of the Angels Church to remember the 95 students and teachers killed their Dec 1, 1958. A new memorial was being dedicated and the Cardinal officiated.

Fucking piece of shit Durbin used the event, with the site of the burned school on camera right behind him, to say 8 words about the students and then give a 15 minute attack on the Bush administration and push one of his own agendas.

I wrote the scumbag Durbin a letter of complaint which he did not have the nerve or decency to even answer.

Fuck that slime Durbin.

This just shows the strength and integrity of the Chicago Police. At this terrible incident where one of your brother officers was killed, you were able to control the scene, do your jobs and also offer comfort. I am amazed and so proud of all of you. Hold your heads up high for there are many of us who are. God Bless you all and keep you safe. And God Bless the Francis family.

Yesterday at work, while driving around on my beat, I recieved an unusually large amount of waves,"hello" and "hi officer" from the good citizens walking down the street and in their autos.I even had a gentleman step out of his garage just to wave hi.Even though I'm fortunate enough to have this happen regularly, this was beyond the norm.I dont think these actions were for me personnaly on this day. I felt this was a way for the good citizens of this city to acknowledge Officer Richard Francis.
To the good citizens of Chicago who care about us,I say THANK YOU.

GOD BLESS AND BE SAFE

7/03/2008 01:15:00 PM

Mauer is in charge at ORD? Why didn't he make the decision to lower the flags? Incompetence at its best ay ORD.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, 1359 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607.

I hope the family rethinks this. I have stopped giving to them as there is no accountability.

7/03/2008 10:53:00 PM

Having lost my father recently I can attest to the fact that Father Nagle is a self-serving jerk. When he asked that I put the "all donations to the police memorial foundation" line in the obituary I told him that I would try but that the funeral home already called it in to the newspaper. That was my way of giving him the blow-off. Instead he goes to the funeral home and has it done himself. When I arrived the director pulls me on the side and says "dont worry we were able to call the paper and have the obit changed, father Nagle came in and said you told him it was okay"
He is unreal

Mr. Weis,
What have you done with your promise to empty 35th and Michigan of the pencil pushers.

Hey Weis. You said you would clean house and put these people on the street. Nice Job so far. Officer Francis had to work MIDNIGHTs 99.

Mr. Weis you should be ashamed of yourself along with the stuttering midget.

Wow. You put 80 officers on the street. THAT'S ONE GUY FOR EACH WATCH IN EACH DISTRICT. ONE!

If those 9-5 weekends off do nothings had any balls they would go in on Monday and request a transfer to a patrol district out of respect for officer Francis.

This department and the people who run it are shameful. I'm sick to my stomach.

Being retired for more than 10 years and living in Arizona, I have been asked by friends out here if I knew Officer Francis. Personally I did not know him. But,in my heart I knew him just as I know every officer on the job. Unless you have been there people can not understand our bond.
I know you are finding your current administation difficult to deal with. Let me assure there have been problems with every administration. In time this will pass and you will prevail.
May God bless Officer Francis and each and everyone of you. Be Safe.

From an ISP Trooper and former city PD officer....

I am crushed at the loss of another officer. I am not many years from retirement either. May God care for him, his family, and friends. I cannot go to his services because of living / working way south.

Mom died 3 months ago. A just retired buddy lost his daughter to cancer. At her service they played a song by the Christian group, Casting Crowns. The song is titled " Praise you in this Storm ." I don't know if it's appropriate for this blog... but here are some of the lyrics to the song.

" I was sure by now,
That You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away....
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say “Amen”,
and it’s still raining......

As the thunder rolls,
I barely hear You whisper through the rain “I’m with you”....
And as your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives....And takes away..

I’ll praise You in this storm,
And I will life my hands.....
For You are who You are
No matter where I am......
Every tear I’ve cried
You hold in Your hand.....
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn....
I will praise You in this storm

Here is the link to you tube if you'd like to hear it. Watching the video helped me with losing Mom, and Will's daughter. Perhaps it would help one of you.

Sometimes God calms the storms in our lives...
Sometimes He just rides the storms with us.......

God Bless you Officer Richard Francis, your family, loved ones, to all of you at CPD who lost a friend and brother, and to those who just care about we who put on the uniform everyday and lay it on the line.......

Be safe out there........

As the son of a current CPD Detective with over 20 on, and retired CPD Captain with over 30 on, and as a member of the Illinois National Guard, I am completely devastated by this loss and such an overwhelming feeling of sadness has been consuming me. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to Officer Francis' Family, as well as the whole CPD Family.

When I was growing up, one of my biggest fears was that something would happen to my Mom on the job. I remember crying when something bad would happen to her, and getting this feeling I have been getting right now, and my heart truly goes out to Officer Francis' Family during this tragic time. I cannot begin to act as if I can say I know what they're going through or anything, I can only say may God be with them and give them strength to get through this, and that we are all grieving with you together.

Perhaps it may give you a slight degree of comfort to know that he is in a much better place now, a place where no crimes are ever committed, where the sun always shines, and Heroes Never Fall but are Always Remembered.

Stay strong brave men and women of the CPD, there are still plenty of civilians out here who recognize the heroism that persists within this fine Department on a daily basis. I love each and every one of you. God bless you all.

Please, please get your niece counseling if she needs it. This was not her fault. I say again..This was NOT her fault.
She was NOT responsible for the womans actions. Have her speak to her Pastor, or a counselor.
Do not let her eat any guilt on this. Nightmares could be common for a few weeks. Should this continue inside her after a few weeks, please get her to counseling.

RESPONSE TO MY LETTER FROM WGN (IN FAIRNESS TO THEM I AM SHARING IT ON THE BLOG)...

Dear Father Tomasino,

I'd like to apologize for our handling of the officer shot story.

We strive to be accurate and sensitive with every script we write.

We never had any intentions of implying some level of fault on the officer's part -- Never did we want to blame the officer and as you said "run with it." That really is not the way WGN News operates on any level. Also, most everyone who works the overnight shift knew Officer Francis. He ate lunch in our cafeteria regularly. He was a kind man and we are very sorry for the Chicago Police Department's loss.

On Sunday, 06 July, I unvoluntarily worked Taste of Chicago. It was relatively quite and uneventful. As coppers, most of us were bitching and moaning about the heat, etc... We also spoke of hoping to attend the wake of Officer Francis later that day. After being sent to our post in the middle of Butler Field, we were stopped by an older gentleman riding a bike. He stopped and said, "Excuse me, ladies. Can I speak to you for a second?" We figured that he wanted directions or info on the Taste. Then he said, "I just want to let you know that some of us really appreciate the job you do for us." He looked at the mourning band on our stars, shook both our hands and said. "Thank you very much!". It was difficult for me to say "thank you" back because I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. A few kind words can make a hell of a differance. God bless Officer Francis and all those he loved. You will never be forgtten, because heroes live forever.
