Going Out of Business

No, not the blog - not yet anyway. The media:
  • Tribune Co.'s largest newspaper, the Los Angeles Times, plans to cut about 250 jobs, including 17% of its news staff, as part of the newly private media company's mandate to slash costs.

As part of the cuts, the LA Times, the fourth-largest daily paper by weekday circulation in the U.S., will reduce the number of pages it publishes each week by 15%, the paper's editor Russ Stanton said in a memo released Wednesday.

The paper plans to eliminate about 150 positions from its editorial staff, Mr. Stanton's memo said, out of its current total of about 840. Another 100 positions will be cut from its circulation, marketing and other non-news employees
The dead tree media's slow slide into oblivion continues unabated. In the race to the bottom, is it the Times or the Trib that wins?

Imagine all of the trees, not to mention fuel used to deliver the papers, chemicals, pollution, waste, etc. that would be saved if we just did away with newspapers. They can be viewed online, no need for hard copies. What do you say Al Gore? Think of the future generations that will inherit this planet. DEMAND AN END TO NEWSPAPERS!

The Tribune has been money grubbing for years, increasing advertising rates almost semi-annually, reducing the size of the column widths to require advertisers to spend more to advertise the same message, then reducing type font size to squeeze more into the reduced space they just whacked the advertisers for. Then they reduced circulation areas, forcing advertisers to buy into multiple advertising circulation zones to again, spend more to reach their previous readership. They've been fucking the Chicago Metro area for more than 35 years that I know of and probably a lot longer before that. That's why the premise that they are the watchdogs of society is such bullshit. They have been a parasitic leach on us for more than a century, all the while pretending to being a guiding force the improvement of our lives. What shit! For too many years, the public has been lead to believe that if you read it in the Tribune, it must be true. Zell bought a lemon, and it only took about 6 months for him to figure it out. He and his investors are trying to see if the sum of the parts of the Tribune are greater in value than the whole. Colonel McCormick and all the rest of the Tribune lore....what a bunch of shit. Can't wait for them ugly Red Ball boxes to disappear from the corners around my house.

it'll be a shame when the 'dead tree' media goes out of business, because then what will online pickpockets like SCC have to copy and paste???

SCC already won the race to the bottom. It's only a question of who finishes second.

The Trib should go out of business. We have enough liberal rags in this city and not many are left of the recent TRIB. Fuck them, good riddens.

Now, now, let's not be such a bitch in the morning; save your bile for the afternoon 'brain storming' sessions with your editors.

So many sore losers, so much time to kill, when you're about to be, or have been, laid off.

Better spend your precious time working on those resumes that no one will bother reading.

Received a call about a week ago from a kid trying to sell me a trib subscription at 40% off. I replied that I'd just wait for the old man to finish his cuts over at the tower and by that time i may need 80% off to bite. I suspect that the Tribune is going to be the size of The Onion by the time Sam Zell is through with it.

Can't wait for Sam Zell to dump all those arrogant fucking newspaper reporters who think they make the news with their bull shit stories about gang banger "victims" and their full of shit lawyers. Defense lawyers are officers of the court. Haven't found one that is interested in seeking the truth yet?

When the Tribune was a conservative paper it flousished and made millions. Then they forgot where they came from and are now on the auction block.

Lotsa liberals are soon going to be out of work.

The quality of writing at the Trib is terrible. I just read a story about a child who was placed with DCFS and the parents sued and won something like 5 mil. (from the city I think)
When the child was removed from the daycare, she was xrayed and found to have two broken arms. Nowhere does it say how she got the injuries.
Really poor quality writing. Sometimes I have to go back and read the same paragraph over to figure out point they are trying to make.
Don't know about the Times...haven't read it in a very long time.

I think the last straw with the Tribune was when they moved the quarter slot to the center of their vending boxes and made it a little tougher to slide the half foot long length of coathanger into hit to get the paper for free. I did enjoy the drivers of their trucks getting whacked for violation of the no left turns at the intersection of Lincoln/Belmont and Ashland when they would stock their boxes. If it werent for the Sunday Crossword in the Trib magazine, I would have written them off years ago.
