This Will Stop Crime!

  • Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed legislation Monday that would offer more protection to victims of domestic violence by allowing satellite tracking of those who violate orders of protection.

"This is a way to enforce court orders of protection before it's too late," Blagojevich said.
Thank goodness for a COURT ORDER! Until at some point, the recipient of the Order of Protection decides (s)he really doesn't care if (s)he spends the rest of their life in prison and removes/disables the GPS system and takes out their anger on the victim. Sometimes, people just don't care about anything but revenge.

What would work wonders though - concealed carry. We're just saying.

You know I was looking at a map of shootings in Chicago for the year and was reminded of Daley's line about turning things into the "Old West" if private citizens were allowed to have handguns. I couldn't help but think that the map looked a lot like the "Old West" now. Would it really hurt to allow people to be able to protect themselves rather than going to the slaughter like lambs? The police are doing their job, very well thank you, but their job is not to be the personal body guard of every man, woman and child. That in essence is what Daley is saying the police are expected to do and it completely unrealistic; moreover that the people are supposed to trust in this? Now, which is more insane? Asking that responsible adults be allowed to carry firearms...kind of like responsible adult police officers and body guards do every day in Chicago...or asking people to trust that police will be in all places at all times to protect every innocent person? Why are we so far away from seeing handgun carry in Chicago becoming a reality? It's outrageous.

And the nice thing about this is that the person who has the order of protecton... can sneak up on the guy and once again KA-BOOM!

Either way... a win win for the protectee.

Hmmm...not a bad idea from today's Wall Street Journal:

RICHMOND, Va. -- The National Rifle Association and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence rarely agree on anything related to gun laws. But both support a law-enforcement program in Richmond that targets gun crimes.

The Supreme Court's Second Amendment decision in June that struck down restrictions on individual gun ownership caused city officials nationwide to worry that they could see an increase in gun violence. It also renewed interest in Richmond's efforts to combat it. The city has already reduced firearm-related violence dramatically. It has done so not by making gun purchases more difficult -- Virginia is one of the easiest places to legally buy a handgun -- but by severely punishing all gun crimes, including those as minor as illegal possession.

Maybe we can surgically implant the device and the victim could track the whereabouts of the offender at all times. If the offender attempts to remove the device a small amount of cyanide would be automatically released into the bloodstream of said offender instantly killing him. Of course the state would probably have to fit the bill for the burial so let's just forget that idea. Would be nice however.

Howdy,

Thank you SCC for the support of concealled carry in Illinois and Chicago. I believe that most Police Officers support concealed carry. I know if I were a Police Officer that I could count on a law-abiding citizen who was armed to assist me in my duties, if asked. I support concealed carry to protect myself & family. I'm not trained to breakdown downs or enforce other laws. You guys do a wonderful job, and I'm not about to take it away, but I will vigiously defended myself and family. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. The weak link in this scenario is the ability to cut the device off.

Unless a GPS device can be put inside the body (think the movie TOTAL RECALL) it can be defeated.

Those who violate orders of protection KNOW they are violating it. If they are willing to violate the order, they're willing to cut the device off and do what they will.

This legislation is not real and will accomplish nothing but make a lot of people feel safer when they actually are not.

Incident did involve a former PO so there was no telling what he had in the garage with him. There was also the fact that he told negotiators that the only way he was leaving was in a body bag.
Gotta hand it to the SWAT guys, a few tanks of OC/CS and they took him into custody without anyone being hurt.

OT...but why does it seem that for every one good sgt out there, there are two bad ones? Watch your own backs people!

**********************************

I have a question. Based upon this post, what is the definition of a good sgt? Is a good sgt one who:

1. Ignores what's going on, never calling out dogs thereby keeping the dogs happy but pissing off the workers.

2. Allows late lunches, no matter who asks.

3. Never rides to jobs unless called upon so that people don't think that they are being over supervised.

Or, is a good sgt one who:

1. Calls out the dogs, pissing them off but showing the workers that what they do is important and valued.

2. Doesn't always give the late lunches, because by allowing them puts more pressure on the people who have to stay.

3. Shows up on jobs just to back people up and help out if needed. And give advice if warranted.

Just curious, because there will be people who think that my first group of questions would make a good sgt, and other think that the second set of questions would make a good sgt.

I wonder how the majority feels?

Concealed carry? In Illinois? As long as this state has its current crop of feckless Republicans and socialist-trained Democrats, it'll never happen. After all, if the government officials start giving an individual the idea that he can protect himself, he has the opportunity to ponder his situation in life. He might start wondering why said government officials are constantly demanding more money without ever fixing things. He may even vote against them, as the threat of violent coercion can be countered.

That's why it'll never happen. Too many Democrat pols are wedded to the idea of a welfare state. Independence from the state is forbidden.

Back to the SWAT comment... no need to throw comments about the district guy wearing the camo cargos and bandanna, he was there and he was securing the perimeter. How he dresses is his own business.
Also, Active Shooter incident in 006 last night involving an offender that shot numerous rounds at numerous PO's (including the guys in the helicopter) was contained by district personnel (awesome job guys in 006, truly, it could not have gone as well as it did without those who were first on scene) and then SWAT arrived. Immediate action team assembled when homey bolts from the alley toward the BEAR cat toward SWAT members shooting. Sgt AK (who I remember someone talking shit about here on the blog awhile back but never included his name, pussy) took a round in the vest, through the med pouch and shattering two magazines, he returned fire along with the rest of the stack (which included another sgt because the sgts on SWAT lead by example) and bad guy went down. Bad guy was still shooting at PO's even after taking rounds so a few more rounds were put into him.
Can we please stop talking shit about SWAT or even district personnel that respond to what wind up becoming SWAT jobs? If it werent for the district personnel setting up that perimeter, homey may have gotten away after shooting at the police. If SWAT wouldnt have shown up to finish the job, more PO's may have been injured.
WE ARE ALL ON THE SAME TEAM HERE.

I wish that I could tell you that thugs are hammered in TN for unlawful possession. However, it's a misdemeanor in TN unless you happen to be a convicted felon. Even resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer is a misdemeanor here. The ADAs are very prone to Nol Pros a resisting arrest charge, at least here in Memphis. The only real good news is that convicted felons with a weapon can usually count on some real time, as they are regularly sent over to the Feds for prosecution.

"What would work wonders though - concealed carry."

Amen.

8/05/2008 10:49:00 AM

I live in Shelby Co., TN, and I'm a cop in Memphis. Perhaps after having been denied this basic right for so long, IL citizens would seriously avail themselves of being able to protect themselves and others, if given the chance. However, I'm not so sure that would happen.

Even with a population of roughly 1 million inside Shelby Co., we have less than 30,000 permit holders. The permit process is relatively easy and inexpensive, so I'm doubtful that is the reason that there aren't more permit holders.

A much more likely reason is that people in this country have been turned into sheeple, with no real will to resist, no matter whether the knock on the door is from a criminal who has come to take their money or another politician coming to take more of their rights.

Sidenote: If you want citizens to be able to carry, push for a handgun carry permit that allows for both concealed and open carry. If it says just concealed carry, the pols will come up with a brandishing law that is vague enough that anybody glimpsing a permit holder's weapon in any way could call and the permit holder be arrested on that charge. All of you on the job I believe can relate, as it either has happened or will happen when that sudden gust of wind strikes.
