Two men were wounded -- one fatally -- and a woman was struck by a stray bullet in a Sunday morning shooting on the West Side, police said.
Two men and a woman were shot about 11:05 a.m. in the 3800 block of West Chicago Avenue, police said.
A 36-year-old man was shot in the head while standing in the street and was dead on the scene. The man appears to be the intended target, police said.
Depending on the source, weekend totals were impressive. Upwards of 8 killed and 20 shot. We don't understand why the media isn't covering each and every crime scene with camera crews and street interviews. Are they backing off their "everything is going to hell in a hand basket" coverage of earlier months? Daley's people must be putting the screws to their lapdogs again. After all, Daley's going to China for the Olympics and we can't have any adverse coverage, can we?

What district are you in? I'm in 016, the president of my 9-unit building, and our assessments are between 150-180 depending on unit size. I'm thinking of raising it maybe another $15-$20/month which my residents will hate, but our bill DOES include gas both for heating and cooking.
Management companies are crooks like everyone else in chicago; sever them and manage your affairs yourself. It's a little extra time but well worth it. You'd be surprised what you can accomplish without the bureaucratic bullshit of a management company.

You're not even close on this one.
The "glee" you mentioned isn't glee at all. It's merely a pyschological way for anyone in law enforcement to deal with tragedies. You may know it as "dark humor". In Chicago, there's a lot of material.
Unfortunately, as much as we'd like members of law enforcement to stop these tragedies, they can't. It takes a neighborhood to retake a neighborhood from thugs. If the neighborhood lays back from fear, apathy, or in this case, the news media not reporting the news, the neighborhood will never come back.
By the way, if you think law enforcement has a lock on dark humor, you're wrong. The medical field wins hands down.
If you're a reporter, get to know some people in the medical profession. Their humor is much darker than law enforcements. Especially the emergency room types. Rumor has it, they started the "Dead Baby" jokes that popped up in the 1960's and early 70's.

I realize this is off topic, but this morning on channel 9 WGN Mayor Daley was talking about his escape to Beijing for the Olympics. Tricky Dick had nerves to say our department was one of the most best equipped and technically updated. He also said (and I don't know how he squeezed this out of his tiny head)he had great respect for us. OK enough of the bullshit, what department is he talking about? Who is this man?
We just ate our reserve last fall (about $10k) installing new boilers. No special assessment though! We're running lean now but in another year or so it'll be built back up.

I don't think the casino will be at Navy Pier. I talked to a security guard working over at the old U.S. Post office over Congress Pkwy. and he said they're doing a bunch of construction work inside to prepare it to be the new location for Chicago's casino.

I own a 8 unit building and have owned as many as 24 units at one time. You don't need a management company. You need a board and the numbers of a good handyman service. Snow and grass cutting is easy to find someone. Why pay for something you can do?

IN 012th dist. no or old PDT's, one of the oldest stations in the city, which was listed approx 8 yrs ago in the Scum Times to be scheduled for ground breaking construction on a new station later that year. Word is the fenced off land where it was supposed to be built was recently sold to CostCo. No Ac in processing room. Processing room computers constantly down, mold and standing water a regular thing in bsmt. locker room, which was written up by osha with threats of closing it down if not fixed. It's not fixed and problem still present, of course uninon does nothing when informed. No contract over a year and they want us to produce numbers, sure.

Well thats horse shit!! Anyone which cops this weekend? Portland Pd had a m/4 who was in a stolen veh. gave them his name with no ID. Well they pulled out a portable finger print machine called IBIS. They was able to verify who he was on the spot. Would that be a useful device if I was doing work still? CPD #2 largest dept and we are just not getting computers with Iclear in are cars. Depts outside of chicago have had this tech. for years. What a joke we must be to other depts.

I live in the eastern (nice) part of 017, and paying $475 for assessments and an extra $125 for "Special Assessments" since they did tuck work and the reserve took a hit. We hardly have any grass and the cleaning maid of the common area is not provided by the management, but hired seperately by the incompentent board. I'm going to have to put my foot up a couple of asses and probably do as suggested and run this thing myself.

I live in a 16 unit building and pay $200 a month for assessments. We are self managed and do pretty well.
$500 a month is more along the lines of a larger building (30+ units) or a building with an elevator. Get rid of the management company. All they do is suck you dry.
People will have to step up, though and take a more active role in what goes on around your building.
We have cleaning, lawn and snow removal services. However, when other issues pop up (hall carpets need to be cleaned, painting the common areas, finding someone to do repairs, etc) someone has to make those phone calls, meet with prospective companies and then bring the estimates and such to the board.
People have to understand that they don't live in an apartment anymore and things don't get magically fixed without paying for it. Your reserves aren't a bottomless pit of money, to be dolled out willy nilly. That money comes out of everyone's pockets.

management companies also steal the condo assoc $$$...BIG TIME...ask financial crimes on what they are working on, maybe given to the feds 'cause the losses to so many condo assoc from this a$$hole was greed-crazy. Get two people (not just one) to run the finances and make sure all financial records are transparent at every meeting for everyone (to eliminate any collusion) and get rid of the management company.

I disagree. If anything I believe that SCC has had a positive influence in exposing the hypocrisy and slanted journalism that was getting waaaay out of hand. As a private citizen (and I'm sure there are many who share my opinion) I was getting pretty disgusted with the "cps student shot" angle and all the other crap the media was trying to force down our throats.
Respectable, law-abiding citizens are not swayed by the high school journalism that passes for the media in our society today. I personally believe that most young reporters are not journalists but people looking to eventually grease their way into a cushy county or city job. At least it looks that way to me.

Press is ignoring this topic. Currently, there are 120 recruits in academy. next graduation will be in october for 25 recruits. Yet he continues to hire exempts. Someone has to answer calls. Or is that no longer a priority?

Zone 9 (Covers 5th and 22nd Districts)
1945hrs: AM radio stations are broken into by the National Weather Service warning citizens in Mt. Greenwood(Chgo), Oak Lawn, Alsip and other surrounding burbs to take immediate cover due to a tornado warning and sighting of a funnel cloud that was approaching.
Street Officer on Zone 9 asks the Zone about the information heard on a cheap AM radio, Zone 9 informs the officer that they have no weather information at this time about the storm. Mean time all the tornado alarms are going off in Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Alsip, Robbins and other south suburbs.
After being asked about this several times, the Zone 9 dispatcher says she is going to ask her supervisor if anything is being heard about the AM radio telling citizens where we are all working to take immediate cover.
It was well after 2000hrs, 15 minutes later that the dispatcher said that there is a severe weather warning in effect. Nothing about the tornado warning or anything about taking cover.
It was only after an officer said that a small tornado or micro-burst had hit around 11500 South Kedzie that 2299 ordered his cars to take cover.
A 1/2 billion dollar communication center that has less information than a $5.00 AM radio. Fucking ridiculous! If you remember a few years ago when the sirens went off across Chicago for a Tornado and the 911 center didn't know why the sirens were going off?
God forbid this turned out to be a real tornado and no officer or Chicago citizens were warned, imagine the outcome!
If the 911 center can even get information about a goddamn approaching storm, what would really happen if a 911 attack happened here? We are screwed!

I've been on the job for 20 years, too. The majority of that time (17 years) on the west side and in Englewood. I've got the pile o' medals to show that I've always been the real police.

A $500 assesment on a building that size sounds way too much. That is assuming the assessment does not include a special assesment for building improvements or to build-up a seriously underfunded reserve.
It's a bitch with limited time available but start going to the condo board meetings and ask questions. Get on the Board if possible.
As has been previously posted, the best course of action is for the Board to do the building management themselves buy that only works if you have Board members that are capable and willing to put in the time for what in most cases is an unpaid position.
Management companies do the managment at cost plus profit and in my experience hire class A suckholes at the condo residents expense. It's frustrating as he'll to be paying for it all as an owner and having a Management Co. in bed with a corrupt and/or incompetent Board.
Get involved with other like-minded owners and start asking questions and if need be put some feet to the fire. Just being a cop could be helpful putting some fear in anyone stealing even if you don't explicitly make statement to put the fear in them (not a good idea).
Funny thing it's a lot like City Gov't but on a mini scale. It all comes down to the Leadership, the Accountability and the involvement of the people.

Sorry but it was probably just lazy dispatchers on zone 9, zone 13 was all over it giving updates every couple of minutes about tornado touchdowns, funnel cloud sighting etc. a Sgt. in 012 told the dispatcher his cars weren't answering any storm-related jobs until it calmed down and for the cars to find a place to take cover, it was nice to hear..
Get a life or a job you don't have to spend so much complaining about. Think of all the overtime you could be working in the private sector instead of whining and crying and damaging the chicago police department with your salty attitudes and poor work ethic. Be careful though, you can't come up with a lot of excuses not to do your job and be a lazy dog in the real world where people are expected to produce results. Fact: There are people who are the police that barely passed the police test -- a test a drunken money could pass, and have no formal education or ambition to be anything but a beat cop until retirement. They manipulate the job to cheat even their lunch hours, stay down on jobs so they don't have to take another one. They are the ones that are oh so proud to walk around and take credit for the honorable position of being the police, but they don't do jack most of the time. These "innocent" people are the same ones that sit on juries and let these brutal criminals go free. They are the same ones who sit on juries that give these animals thousands or millions of our tax dollars. If anybody advocates letting the bad guys run wild then you are a coward and do not belong on this job. I am not a fan of Supt. Weiss, or of our mayor. But when I go to work 6 days a week i will be damned if I am going to let some thug hurt another innocent person. And for all you jagoffs that say let them kill each other that is exactly what you are a jagoff. The problem is they normally don t kill bad guys. If you quit your whinning and keep your mouth shut we have THEM right where we want THEM> There has nt been a contract in the last 20 yrs thathas been settled in a decent amount of time. You need to change the agreement and allow us to start negotiating before the current one runs out. Half if not more of the people who post on here don t even know where the police room is at 26th street. And I guarentee you that if you do it s because you did the paper on a job......... Bad bosses and merit guys are nothing new to this job. I m not saying it s right but that s the way it is. Its one thing to piss and moan about things it s another to change them. If it does nt apply to you then let it roll off. if it does then quit this job and go work in a factory. My family and yours deserve better.

amen.....all of those that complain probably couldnt do anything else in life...do your job...u got good benefits already
