Academy Class Canceled?

Commentators saying the August/September class canceled and nothing on the board the rest of the year. Three-hundred retirements and under one-hundred fifty hires for the year.

But we aren't shorthanded.

I see my partner maybe at roll call then I ride around alone with a massive backlog all day. Why are no politicians/brass addressing this issue? Especially with rising crime concerns as of late.

The media talking about crime going up and is it Jfed's fault? The city council holding hearings on why crime is going up? It's hard to do proactive policing and keep crime down when I am riding from call to call. I can't believe more attention hasn't been paid to the manpower issue.

Not only are we short, but the mismanagement of officers is a joke.
Every inside officer has to do a week on the street, yeah, sounds rough, but all they do is drive around, no assigned jobs and they don't do paper so what good are they?

If they want real change, bring some folks from patrol who actually know the job downtown and you'll hear some viable solutions.
Otherwise it's all smoke and mirrors and we all know it.

The DEA is a good agency prone to many of the same gripes that every law enforcement agency suffers from. The DEA is probably the closest federal agency to being the police.

I have worked with several DEA agents and can verifiably say they were all decent, knowlegeable guys. The DEA also offers the many benefits of being a Federal employee.

I would say go for it, things are only going to get worse on the CPD. The 20 year and out pension is very ideal for law enforcement too.

Stay away from Secret Service,BATF,Air Marshal,US Marshal,Border Patrol

Oh! I know, lets direct the money for other uses as seen fit by the mayor and that worthless city council. One thing's for sure, bet the Mayor is using some of that budgeted money to Bid for the Olympics, And then to really snag them, the mayor will say, "I promise tight security, I promise to hire a 1000 more policemen"; when really he still wouldnt bring our true numbers up to par.

This city and this dept are in trouble and no one is letting the public know the truth. The next thing I am waiting for is the mayor to say something stupid like," the state police ride 99 why can't the Chicago Police"? and worse yet our sup supporting the idea.

Why not recruit state certified Police Officers from Illinois as well as other states? It works in Florida. We save the cost of the training by having a 4 week class and we can quickly boost up the numbers. This can help right now because face it Mr mayor and your cronies this is becoming an officer safety issue and our stupid union should be more outspoken about this. Lateral transfers are not a new idea and they have been working country wide for years. We are always 3 steps behind everyone else.

I enjoyed the opputunity to work with DEA. I had a blast but I am so glad I am not involved with Federal Investigative units as my long term career. View the documentary "Chasing Pablo". Years later thats the organization I woked with.

PRO: High speed training, long term investigations. Great Equipment. 20-30G more on base salary than CPD, on GS Scale for pay. Very political.

CON:
All that High speed city stuff. DEA establish's task forces. They always use local cops to man these units with a few DEA Agents. Note: do not look to CPD, NYPD, as the model for how DEA opperates. That is the exception. Federal oversight, Very few espirit de corps, (Limited to special units). Family is not an issued item. You read into that. If You want a family later please consider this right now.

They DO NOT have sick time that we do, or NYPD,LAPD,or TEXAS RANGERS.

10 Hour days no OT. If your lucky you can work at the emabassy, This is when you go back to family, because if your new on the job. You will pay your due's to get these assignments.

You know how CPD has a POW section at call back. CHICAGO is DEA's Call back. Now thats only for the few who get into trouble with DEA. (not all agents here are in trouble) Just the selected few are monitored here.

I can't believe no media is catching on with the way the assignments sheets are done. PO's detailed out are on ghost cars and of the ones that are actually up, many are 99. It isn't safe for you coppers. Even doing the minimum can't get you hurt in some 99 situations. From the information I've seen, there are exactly 6721 total police regardless of rank. These are full and light duty. 15 years ago we were over 10,000.

..."Three-hundred retirements and under one-hundred fifty hires for the year."

Its been that way for a few years!

It’s all about the MONEY! The whole 13,500 sworn bullshit, that’s what the Police Department is BUDGETED for! Every empty seat in roll call still has an annual paycheck! If that paycheck is not used, it goes back to the City’s budget, not the Police Departments! Fire, Streets and San, Teachers, all are short on manpower too, same thing goes for them and their payroll!
Daley has finance a trip to the Beijing Olympics on that empty seat to your right and to your left!
J-Fed should have learned a lesson or two from the Military! When you accept command of a unit (i.e. The Chicago Police Department), you accept responsibility for all of its equipment and manpower! Well boss, where is everybody? Can you show us 13,500 actual bodies? He is either a fool, or playing the “politician” game, which makes him a liar or a cheat, or both.

Lets set the record straight! We DO NOT need to hire any more officers at this time! There are two officers in each car.... that's a waste of manpower! One of them can handle a job and the second one can go handle another job. In "The Dark Knight", I learned that Batman's car actually has a big motorcycle inside it, so I propose that when a "10-4" car gets to an assignment..... the passenger officer hits the "thingamajiggy" that makes the "whatchamcallit" into a motorcycle and then he/she can take the motorcycle part and go handle another job! I'm gonna go make up a press release! Toodles!

Buckeye drops police chief finalist, cites 'inconsistencies'
by Eric Graf - Jul. 30, 2008 10:07 AM
The Arizona Republic
After a lengthy process to find a new police chief, Buckeye has eliminated its top candidate from the running.
Town officials said they discovered "inconsistencies" in the background investigation of Ernest Brown, a veteran of the Chicago Police Department.
A four-person committee of Buckeye officials visited Chicago for two days earlier this month to dig deeper into Brown's background after he had been identified as their first choice.
Town Manager Jeanine Guy said a member of the interview panel confirmed inconsistencies in the information Brown submitted. No further details were disclosed.
"I felt that based on the information we discovered during this process, we could not continue to consider Mr. Brown for the department's top position," Guy said in a statement released Tuesday.
The town's interview panel met Wednesday7/30 morning at about 9 a.m. to discuss their next move, according Buckeye spokesman Bob Bushner.
"The fact that they're meeting this morning shows they are ready to move along," he said.
Brown was one of four finalists for the open spot after former Police Chief Dan Saban stepped down in May to run for Maricopa County sheriff.

I suspect that it might well be a good thing to just close the CPD academy and send recruits to PTI downstate, for a lot of reasons.
8/05/2008 01:00:00 PM
######################################################################
Unfortunatly, the city would have to pay PTI to train its recruits.
The city doesn't pay its bills.
They didn't pay HWC since 1991 and that is why there are no role players working with recurits at the Academy an longer!
THIS WOULD NOT WORK.

DEA thoughts:

Pro:
1. better money
2. less random BS
3. not at the beck and call of anyone with a phone, a free hand or a democratic sponsor
4. better training
5. not such a high proportion of out of shape dummies
6. you are far more likely to work with a small group of trustworthy people

Con:
1. You are on the losing side of an unwinnable war
2. You will move wherever they tell you for at least your first few years, and this may be Manhattan, San Francisco, Boston or DC/NoVA

Overall, morale is generally high, but con #2 is a general sticking point as quite a few people don't like moving around often just to do the same job.

I was under the impression that they had a hiring freeze since circa 2006, but that may have recently ended.

OT: Would any of you guys leave the CPD to go work for the DEA as a special agent? Anyone on here have any insight about the morale or benefits of DEA SA? Thanks

8/05/2008 12:14:00 AM

The DEA is a good agency prone to many of the same gripes that every law enforcement agency suffers from. The DEA is probably the closest federal agency to being the police.

I have worked with several DEA agents and can verifiably say they were all decent, knowlegeable guys. The DEA also offers the many benefits of being a Federal employee.

I would say go for it, things are only going to get worse on the CPD. The 20 year and out pension is very ideal for law enforcement too.

Stay away from Secret Service,BATF,Air Marshal,US Marshal,Border Patrol

8/05/2008 06:48:00 AM

---------------

Leave this job. Leave it now. Things are very bad here and they are only going to get worse. Leave. Get a nicer pension and more professional training. Get a nicer job after your retirement. Anywhere else is nicer than here. Don't stay here, you'll just get trapped here and you'll regret never leaving.

Go anywhere. Don't ask questions. Don't be afraid. Just leave and never look back. Don't talk to any of the people you met on this job. Don't even call here ever again. Don't live in this city. Move away. Move far away and never return.

This is the best advice you will ever get.

8/05/2008 10:22:00 AM
--------------

No way are you handling that many calls in eight hours.

Excluding roll call and one half hour lunch, you cannot possibly work more than 420 minutes in a day. That means you would still be working until the last possible minute before checkoff. That never happens, so you are actually working no more than 400 minutes in one day assuming you never take a bathroom break, buy a bottle of water, or get gas.

For forty jobs that would mean you could spend no more than 10 minutes on any job. That includes driving to and handling by code or paper every single job.

There's no reason to lie to make this job sound shittier than it really is. The truth will be sufficient.

"Downtown" Ernie Brown, CPD retired, was the front runner for the new chief of police job in Buckeye, AZ, a growing town of 25,000 about 35 miles west of Phoenix.

However, after several Buckeye officials visited Chicago, "Downtown" was eliminated from consideration due to "inconsistencies" in his background.

Outside Illinois, Chicago CLOUT don't mean squat, Brown. As a bonus, the attractive young women of Buckeye will now remain safe.

Jobs can wait. Criminals can wait. People shot can wait. People dead can wait. Let them wait. They should wait. They deserve to wait.

You are keeping them from waiting. They are not waiting so they believe the department is at full staff. If they waited an hour for the police, they would know we are understaffed. If they waited four hours for an emergency, they would complain that we are understaffed.

You are ruining everything with your hurrying behaviors. You ask yourself, "Why is this department like it is?" The answer is people like you keep up appearances and hide the truth.

I bailed from CPD after 7 years to go to the Feds. To sum it up, some things are better, some things are worse. Mostly better though. You take a pay cut at first, but once you hit your GS13 it is basically Lt's (or Captain's) pay equivalent. No overtime and 10 hour days is for the most part true. Any time above and beyond that is free of charge for God and Country. But shit, its not like those 10 hours are in a beat car, dealing with a backlog. There is time included to work out as part of your (included) overtime. The pension is a bit different, but they match the first 5% of your deferred comp. Yes, if you mess up, they can technically bounce you farther than from 025 to 003, but you would really have to step on your dick. It is like anything else, some goofy people who slipped through the cracks, some really good, sharp, people, and the rest fill in between.

My one piece of advice is to shop organizations carefully. I don't know about DEA, but FBI will make you move away from Chicago. Some places will hire you for specific vacancies (like chicago), so after you do your time at the academy, you could come back and not have to relocate the family (except out of the city of course). ICE is one of these agencies, that you can come back.

To sum it up, the fed job does have better pay, toys, and resources, but understand the fun days of going out and hitting the streets hard because you woke up just knowing someone was getting locked up today....those days are over. That is the trade off. Nobody does prob cause arrests (without managing to piss off the duty AUSA) unless extremely last resort situations. The simplicity of a beat car a great thing that is extremely underappreciated. Great fun and nothing follows you to the next day. Every day is a clean slate on the watch.

Bottom line, anyone with an interest should seriously consider...and I guess once you retire, they hand out $330k per year retirement gigs. So that is nice!

PTI, COD and trition academies have a capacity of 52 recruits in each class. All the academies within 200 miles of Chicago are at capacity now with 4 classes a year. Even ISP opened their academy again to suburban recruits. With increased hiring by suburban departments, academies are at capacity except for Chicago. In fact, the next class of suburban recruits at Chicago academy will be very large. Chicago has no choice but to train their own if they hire again. If Chicago academy is closed, where will inservice training classes go? Seems academy is the choice for every city agency, besides police.

Go for it. Take a leave from here so you can come back IF you want to.

All LEA's have their politics. It is the nature of the business. Federal law enforcement is no better. Different maybe.

Also, once you are "in" Federal law enforcement, I believe you can move around. Virtually every Federal agency has some security/police function.

DEA or CPD? Depends on what is important to you I suppose...

But, the former CPD Officer that went over to DEA neglected to tell you that the DEA pension stinks, agents have no contractual rights and can be, relative to CPD, easily terminated, and that agents can and often are (for the first 5 years) assigned to just about anywhere IN THE WORLD, let alone the country, with somewhat short notice (uproot your family, etc) They also get limited vacation by comparison to CPD.

On the flip side, they do make more "upfront" money through their paycehcks as opposed to a pension. They do have take home cars. They are trained very well.

Rumor has it that they are currently recruiting/hiring after a long freeze...My thoughts are go for it if you are single and enjoy the idea of living on the border between the United States and Mexico for the next five years or so...very few recruits are assigned anywhere else without a phone call...

Leave while your still young. I did after 3 1/2 years in the west side dealing with the savage and all the bullshit. Now I'm kicking doors and hunting down fugutives for a living, U.S. Marshals Service, I love it. Academy was only 4 months long and didn't have to pay for shit, everything was issued to me. I cashed everything out, pension, comp time, deffered comp. I got a nice fat check from the city. When I went to HQ to resign from my leave of absence the lady at personnel asked me "Are you sure?" "It'll be harder to get back in if you resign and decide to come back" I laughed in her face and told her this was the best decision I've ever made in my life and would never come back, especially the way things are going now. The Sarge at personnel didn't even ask to see me, he just signed my PAR, I handed them my star and ID and said "Adios" I sold my condo and got out Shitcago for good. So get out while you can. Even if you leave and don't like where you're at you can always go to other departments or agencies(local,Feds)There are a ton of opportunities out there. Good luck, be safe.

For what it's worth, with this delay in hiring, my son, a Marine returning from Iraq will probably go get hired at a suburban dept. and not wait around any longer on the list for a slot with the city.

8/05/2008 05:54:00 PM

glad he made it back safe, tell him to take the job in the suburb, but don't give up on the city a lot of guys come back and want to work in chicago.

HELLO 022ND DIST MIDNITES BT 2221. THERE IS A DEVELOPING PATTERN AGAIN IF YOU WEREN'T AWARE OF GARAGE BURGLARIES FROM OAKLEY TO HAMILTON 88TH TO 91ST ST. BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR AT LEAST 2 M/1'S PUSHING OR PULLING THOSE BLACK GARBAGE CARTS. LAST SEEN GOING EB TOWARDS THE METRA, USUALLY AROUND 2AM-6-AM. THANKS, BATMAN

That is accepatable behavior in that neck of the woods. What is so suspicious about it? Dont live in the ghetto.

8/06/2008 12:41:00 AM

*******************

The number of garage burglaries there would get cut in half, maybe more, if the liberals in that neighborhood would shut their garage doors at night. When we used to assign a car on midnights to go around and shut the doors, the people would bitch and moan that we are finally doing something for a living.
While the neighborhood is still nice there, it won't stay that way for long unless the neighbors quit hating the police so much. A lot of beefs from the neighborhood come in from there, and from all races, I might add, whenever anyone tries to do pro-active policing. It's almost like the ghetto over there in one respect: when people bitch about pro-active policing, that type of policing stops, and crime goes up.
Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it.

I understand everything you wrote and can see that you found the grass to be greener on the FED side of the fence, but one thing does puzzle me. Why was it necessary to laugh in the face of the woman at Personnel? What did she ever do to you? She asked the question because, like it or not, most that leave CPD do try to come back, at some point in time. Sounds like she was merely trying to be helpful, and you acted like a jagoff. Yep, you are a FED.

Toodles!

When I read this comment, I laughed out loud and got a tear in each eye! This was my big chuckle for the day! Thank you to the author! You did well!

To the CPD or DEA question.
I was with CPD from 1994 to 2001, on LOA from 2001 to 2005, and resigned in 2005. I left in 2001 to go with Department of Defense (NCIS) and loved it. Traveled the world, went to the Middle East a few times, was assigned to some great task forces, and worked some good cases. In 2008 I had enough of the last minute travel plans made by my Uncle (Uncle Sam) and switched over to the Postal Inspectors. A lot slower than NCIS and CPD but I guess safer and a good living. As for the Fed; our pension sucks, we work 10 hour days, don't have OT, can't work side jobs, we all don't get take home cars (actually many of the agencies are parking the the G-Rides), lots of "never been the police wanna bees" working in the G, no esprite decorps what so ever, and most training is ok. Those are pretty much the the down sides I can think of now. There are benifits; no King Richard II, live were you want, travel if you want it. no more CPD merit BS to deal with, ect. An old CPD academy classmate is with the DEA in LA and is ok. Stay safe always and good luck with your choice.

But burning a furlough segment just to avoid ONE DAY in August? Much too much drama.
