What Did He Mean?
A lot of heat being generated over this comment:
Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue was asked whether rank-and-file police officers still waiting for a new contract would be willing to take a pay cut or unpaid days off.
"If the city can convince my members of the dire necessity of such a move, the membership would be willing to listen," Donahue said. "They’d be willing to consider anything the city can convince them is necessary."
On one hand, Donahue could have been being sarcastic. He didn't acquiesce to anything. He said "if the city can convince members" which is certainly going to be a damn cold day in hell before that happens. He also said, "willing to consider." Judging from the reaction here and elsewhere, it's already been considered and rejected by the members.
On the other hand, the could be the preview to a complete cave-in. We can't see how that'd be even remotely possible without some input from the members. It would certainly spell the end of the FOP in Chicago. To that end, we provide the following:

That's the number to the FOP. Call them. Ask to speak to or leave a message for President Donahue. Be polite - the lady answering the phone is there to assist you and doesn't deserve any abuse. Relate that you are a dues paying member and as such, you do not believe that the President should be making any public pronouncements regarding unpaid days off or pay cuts. It shouldn't even be on the radar.

1st. I can't believe our membership voted to retain this president.
2nd. He is now a LAME DUCK president, and if he ever cared for us, he doesn't now!!! He will give the city anything they want because he can't be re-elected. He will get a cushy spot and we will continue on in patrol in a car!!

I am certainly against this idea and I loathe Donahue. But I truly believe that this isn't going to come anywhere close to afffecting us. Even if that fuck we call a mayor focuses his eye on our department, it'll be civilians that go, not sworn members. And that is just fine by me. Save one or two lock-up aides, I have yet to meet a useful civilian member. And I have yet to see a civilian in a spot that a sworn member shouldn't have. So I say to that drunk fuckin' midget, bring it on. That being said, the one we have to really fear is that mutt Donahue. He gets any further into bed with the city he's gonna be cookin' breakfast for Daley. The next time there is an election, please don't vote for this yellow two faced jelly fish we call the president of our "union."

Too bad a vote now doesn't mean anything. The election was over months ago. Donahue was overwhelmingly re-elected. Where were you?
Unpaid furlo days off will not apply to any unionized Police Dept. employees. Exempts will bear the brunt of this. They have been made to partake two unpaid days off for years; Daley now wants to make it 3.

I would gladly join in the bashing here, but I bear a LOT of the responsibility for the state of things within our union.... I have been on the job close to 10 years and have NEVER managed to attend a meeting. Maybe if my lazy ass would get up on time and actually get involved I would be able to complain to THEM, not post my gripe on SCC..... Just food for thought, but I know I'm not the only one who has never made a meeting. It's up to US, WE have to fix things, and the only way is by, at the very least, attending enough meetings to 1. get elected to the union and 2. get elected for the pension board. MMMMMmmmmm....... this is curious. Daley says there is a $4 BILLION dollar shortfall, yet he once again ignores his own rules and will not present his budget plan that should show the $4 BILLION dollar short fall until Sep?
I'm sure if there is a sudden increase in the city's desire to negotiate in the next 2 months it will be an honest effort on their part to resolve this issue ( damn, where's the HTML tag for sarcasm?)

That's the result of believing that a union sinks or swims by it's leadership.
A union has only the strength of it's membership and that strength depends entirely upon the unity of same.
'All for one' may seem an elusive reality, but it depends upon enough members taking to heart the 'one for all' part of the saying.

Class Action lawsuit, with the taxpaying citizens comprising the class and the harm alleged being the class have been defrauded of the value said taxes are supposed to be providing in city/county services.
Civil suit discovery will be more effective than waiting for anyone federal to take criminal action.
