- off topic: I saw a copy of a fax message which stated that as of 01 JAN 2009, 005 and 020 are going on 10 hour watches. No 1st watch desk/lock-up crews but rather "relief cars" that is, on street for 6 hours, inside for 4 hours. 3 days off per week, when your weekends roll around it's 4 days off. Should you not happen to enjoy working this schedule, too bad, bid out. This wasn't an AMFN fax so I don't know if it's legit.
Anyone have a work calendar with this? Or start times? How does it affect the motor pool, furlough bids and such. And how did 005 and 020 get "volunteered" for this?

Try doing the same at next year's South Side Irish Parade. For that fact, try to drink alcohol openly without getting arrested at the SSIP. The double standard is sickening. I pray to God that Chalkie makes multiple appearances this weekend even though the weather forecast looks mild.

Oh no, if they do this type of schedule what will happen with the 3rd watch desk crew in 025? Most on it never worked outside. It would be funny to see Corry outside, but hey she would just go on the medical like last time they put her out.
Housing schedule was "one of a kind!" Radio assignments were rare and "the skating was easy!" YOU will work 10 hours, don't kid yourself. As for 50+ more days off per year, then the city will never OK it with such a manpower shortage! Will someone quit getting everyone's hopes up! Its like being in prison and being told "your parole has just been approved, you'll be getting out shortly! Machine guns will also be issued today or tomorrow!

The way this city works, if they say it will be repaired in 2 weeks, it will probably be 2 months

If it takes you SIX hours to find a drinker or a one bagger, you're working in a slow district. The dispatchers won't even let us get a job clear before they stack another 2 or 3 in the box. They make sure that they're 1A's too so you can't even go look for an arrest to take in. I guess that's what I get for clearing my jobs right away.

Information from the Cook County Water Reclamation District stated the world's largest pump house at 38th and Racine broke down during the heavy rain last week.
Repairs are under way but if we get another heavy downpour the area from Roosevelt to 87th and Racine to the Lake could flood like New Orleans with Katrina.
Time due is limited, all officers are to have uniform available AND advised to have rubber boots or golashas. Shouldn't the city buy these as a first issue?
Have there been any warnings to people in that area to prepare, like get your valuables out of the basement.
Stay safe, this time the shit could literally get deep.
The rumor is that the sup has requested the 10 hour schedule be added to contract negotiation to improve morale and lessen overtime. The thinking is if we work more hours, overtime may be reduced by 1/3. A win - win situation, P.O.s and the city benefit.

My neighbor is on the eligibility list for the CPD and is 40yo. I have strenuously advised him to pass on the job but he is adamant about taking it. He also maintains that the CPD is one of the few departments that a 40YO is eligible to be hired.

Has anyone been to the FOP website and gone under current updates? Look for the FOP/CPD vehicle design survey. Some of the designs are dreadful.

Not sure. Chicago has two separate water systems, one for stormwater and one for household waste. In a jam, the city is supposed to be able to dump untreated stormwater, but is of course never to dump untreated household wastewater.
The deep tunnel project was built to help the county comply with the clean water act, which allowed penalties for failure to remediate stormwater dumping into the natural environment.
They ain't ever going to allow household waste dumping into the lake though. The whole reason the Chicago river was reversed was because of the problems with allowing untreated household waste to get into water supplies (i.e., Lake Michigan). In those days a huge number of people in Chicago used to die from things like Cholera and other crazy long-gone viruses etc.

The truth is that with the 10hr day the medical usage, cr's, IOD's, call-offs, they all go down. Something does go up though--it's morale. 52 more days off per year--three (4) day weekends in a row---never a sixth work day. It is a great police work schedule.
A 10 hr day does not fit into a 24/7 schedule. Requires 17% more manpower, where will it come from? Also requires more cars and radios. $$$$$$ Only works for specialized units, or portions of 24/7 units/districts.

Why haven't you done a post on the efforts of Illinois Republican Senators attempting to repeal Cook County's Home Rule Status? They are also attempting to repeal the ridiculous sales tax in Cook County.
Once again this is not being covered by the Chicago media outlets.
CHICAGO -- Critics have been vocal ever since the Cook County Board approved a sales tax hike, but Republican lawmakers on Friday said they want to repeal the county's home rule status and they want to make sure that any future increases get voter approval.
It would require a 60 percent majority vote in the Democratic-controlled bodies for the state to order a repeal of the county's tax hike.

You can have a in-ground pool. The problem is they charge you something like $35,000 for the permit.

She got assigned the Commander spot a few days before Bud Billiken (I think she'd been a lieutenant about three months, then got the district). So, the order had already been cut and the plan worked well all day long.
At nine-thirty that night, she got on the air and said, "Thank you to all the detailed units. You're released." I was up in the D and don't know for sure, but I bet there were cheers of joy and total disbelief among the teams out there.
Half an hour later, the park went UP and the district had a no-car. At the same time, there was a shooting on the expressway ramp below our windows and the D emptied out, mostly on foot, helping the victim and chasing down the shooters.
She tried to recall the detailed units and no one answered up.

A few years ago I was working in a district where they were filming Ocean's 12. Of course, I just had to sniff around like a putz for a peek at Zeta-Jones.
A big truck pulled up in front where the media coppers were stationed. A guy got out and said, "Hey guys, this is for the police compliments of Bernie Mac." It was a truck filled with all kinds of good food.
A lot of other stars were in that building that have taken my money at a box office. Other than Bernie Mac, the rest of them would certainly rather spit on a copper than give one a nod.
I hope you can remember a very classy move by a Chicago movie star whenever you find yourself dropping money on movie stars that secretly support the killer of a Philly cop and directors that make movie after movie portraying every cop as a criminal.

While there might not be valves that get 'shut off', there sure as heck ARE restrictor valves in a lot of the sewers. They limit the amount of water that can be fed into the sewer system at one time.
Because the water comes down so fast and in such volume on occasion (like the other night), the water can't get into the sewers fast enough and the streets back up, then the sidewalks, then the overage runs into the basements through foundations, windows and stairwells. Different logic, same result. Regardless, there's no easy fix for that by rodding the sewer lines leaving your house.
Get the city to come out and remove the restrictor valve out in the street! It made all the difference on my (northwest side) block. Take photos, though. It took us three big rainstorms to get their attention and to prove it.
Oh, and I'm NOT a plumber.

Granted, there are some who honestly seek election because they want to attempt to fix what is broken, right what is wrong and perfect the imperfections they believe exist within our current crop of political 'public servants', but, as is painfully obvious, honest, sincere, intelligent and authentic elected public servants are few and far between.
These 'Politicans' could not get what they want, were it not for the fact that a large majority of citizens being afflicted with the all too human defect of short term thinking, also known as being incapable, or unwilling, to see beyond the tip of one's nose.
Like very young children, many want what they want,, and they want it NOW.
As the years pass, with rarely a day going by when the majority of citizens aren't able to eat until their belly's are full, entertain themselves until they get bored and sleep peacefully when they grow weary, safe in the illusion of guaranteed prosperity, we, as a nation, and as a people, grow weaker and weaker, in both mind, body and spirit.
Strength of spirit, character and intelligence are prerequisites to reliable peace and prosperity.
Just wishing for the ideals possible in life doesn't do a damn thing in making these ideals actualities.
And merely believing they are realized, in the face of much evidence to the contrary, is the folly of fools.
Though the saying goes, 'Life's a bitch, and then you die', I ask this question:
Since we all must die, what, then, do we each choose to do with our lives, while we live?

Like you jagballs in housing ever stayed an entire 10 hour tour when you had that schedule. You ever think there was a reason it was never adopted citywide?
That was the biggest open secret in the police department.
There are other ways to keep us at 5 8 hour tours in a 7 day period, i.e. just don't have consecutive day offs from week to week or just straight days off. You just lose the 3 day weekends when they roll around.
I vote for straight days off, and I have the seniority to get whatever days off I would want.

Gas is at $4,00 a gallon because the Democratic controlled congress refused to allow drilling for oil Alaska and the Gulf. Take a look at when the Democrats took over congress and when gas started to go up. The Democrats went on vacation last week without allowing for a vote to drill. We can blame the Democrats for high gas prices. Look what happened when Bush said he wanted to open up areas just mentioned for drilling, the price of oil went down... Whatever happened to "this is a war for oil" mantra you morons kept bleating?

Oh yeah, African-Americans have been entertaining me for years. Keeping me employed too. The entertainment though has been priceless. Where else would I get so much entertainment like a growd man killing his bro' over a pork chop sandwich? Or a grandmother with a knife stuck in her back on Thanksgiving Day? Or so many young mothers giving birth in toilets or on the floors of dirty rooms or on taxi cab seats or simply throwing the bastards away in dumpsters?

Regarding the 10hr day bashers, not everyone pushing it is from Housing. I worked it for one year in 8th district. Busy district, but it was THE BEST schedule I have ever worked. I would actually come back to work after 3 or 4 days off relaxed and really felt like I had days off. Now with 2 days, every time I go back I wonder why I am still tired and don't even feel like I had much time to do anything.
I spent WAY more time with my friends, family and was even able to work a side job 1 or 2 days a week if I wanted to. If you keep yourself busy, the days fly by. If you park the car and stare at your partner, it can be a LONG day! Just entertain yourself... and that doesn't always mean arrests! I would go back to that schedule in a heartbeat, and would even be willing to transfer to a shitty district to have it.

OK, some of you really need to go back to school and study Civics again, to learn how our government works. The President is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He proposes a budget to congress but Congress runs the economic issues. For some unknown reason every copper over 55 is afraid of 10hr days. EVERYONE in housing loved it. U get MORE time w/ the family because of the commute time saved. Do us a favor old timer, strap on a depends and suck it up. or take the metamucil a little later.
Stop already, 10 hrs on a watch is way different than a unit! those last two hrs will be hell, especially in a busy district!
Remember, if the city is pushing it, it is to their benefit, otherwise it would never come to the table, wise up! now go fuck yourself, but stay safe while doing so!

10 Hour Day????? 8 is long enough....I can foresee health problems.....people on the medical.....more CR #s.....it sounds easy for people in a UNIT...but in a District????It will work for some situations, but lets wait and see.

HEY ASSHOLES IN HOUSING. 10 HOUR DAYS WERE GREAT, WE WERE ONLY THERE FOR 8. WILL NOT WORK IN THE DISTRICTS, TOO MANY INSPECTORS.
I just have to chime in here.
I have worked 12 hr shifts in the past where you were on 3 off 2, on 2 off 3, on 2 off 2, and it rotated as such. Some days felt longer than others, sure.
But, I never had the feeling that I didn't have a day off. Much like now where I come back to work after only 2 days off and feel like I never fucking left, even after my weekends(3 days). I was lucky enough to have had to work a similar 8 hr/6 day schedule prior to the 12 hr shift being implemented. The "felt" difference was substantial. This was while I was working in a hospital on a med-surg floor, so the workload was not equal to a p.o.'s, but equivalent to a degree.
Could this schedule that is being tested be made a bid type of thing?
10hr days will be great. can't wait, I will in a middle busy dist. I will feel bad for the guys in the busier districts who will have to deal with bullshit for an extra 2hrs. In my district the radio batteries only last 6-7 hours, I guess we will to take out two batteries each.
I'll take the 10 hour day in E.T. North and South!

6 on 3 off would be the best 8 hr schedule.....
I remember when I first transfered to 010. At the time, G.M. was a P.O. Once in the car he said,
"I don't chase, I don't do narcotics, nor DUI's..."
Now he returns back to 010 as a SGT with these war stories from when he worked in 015, how he outscored other people in the SGTs exam, and blah blah blah..... Oh and the best one is how he compares and resembles himself to J.L. only younger, taller, and thinner... FROM WHERE???

Let's keep in mind people: these immigrants are the same hispanics who come to America with the same mentally to make quick money, to live in a democracy that the average American takes for granted. These immigrants are the same one that will take a minimum wage job landscaping your lawn, preparing your dinner at fancy restaurant, or the nanny who serve the average yuppie in Lincoln Park. When was the last time the crack hype you arrested for a rock received 5 months? It's unheard of!

Good have them come into the country LEGALLY! swear allegience to the USA, learn English, pay taxes, learn our history, culture, values etc. not, enter illegally, pay no income taxes, property taxes, receive benefits that american citizens receive and refuse to assimilate into our society.
It's not the same as the housing schedule-it's only a pilot program but likely to be the new schedule if it works.
Most CRs, traffic accidents and IOD's happen on the 5 and 6th day. It saves the department cash just on those issues alone. There are three watches but no midnight desk crew w/bid positions. Everyone with an inside spot will have to bid again. Two watch captains and a relief captain so there goes the out of grade pay for the lieutenants. Supervisors (sgts, lyts, anc capts) will work less days so they will have less comp time-losing about 35 comp time hours a year (the Mayor's furlough days anyone?)
Where are the unions on this?
actually the unions are about to roll on this: tomorrow they'll all meet with the city aout the contracts in general-but the ten hour days- the capts have signed off, fop has rolled and the sgts and lts are challenging the administrative time being changed adn trying to get 10 hours for BFDs.
Hope for a pro-police arbitrator or for the city to dick around enough that the arbitrator gets pissed like the time he decided to make our duty availablity pay pensionable and give us new vests.
