This would appear to be a bit more of a big deal than a misdemeanor battery:
- A Chicago Police officer has been suspended and ordered into counseling after she was found guilty of demanding free Starbucks coffee from six different stores on the North Side from 2001 to 2004, sometimes flashing her badge, displaying her gun and screaming at employees.
- Officer Barbara Nevers of the Belmont police district was suspended for more than 15 months, according to records the Chicago Police Board released Thursday.
This is way over the line.

This story appeared on Ch. 5 with Dick Johnson reporting the juicy details from Police Board rulings, with salacious stories about a Sgt. having sex next to 025 and another being married to two women. The kicker was the caveat that this isn't indicative of the...16,000 police officers!

Just a few facts about this one...
Barb Nevers is assigned to 019, but she has been detailed to callback for at least 10 yrs, if not, more. She was sent there for psychological reasons ('cuz she's nuts). She hasn't worked the streets in ages. She trained in another North Side district (I believe it was 020) and no F.T.O. would pass her. They then sent her to 019, where she somehow passed. How this ever happened is a mystery, but there was talk that she threatened to sue based on discrimination due to sexual orientation. She would often talk to herself too. She was afraid of her own shadow, and eventually, wouldn't go out on the street...thus ending up at callback. She DID go into several Starbuck's in 019 and 023 (off duty) during the years in question, and expect free coffee from these places. When she didn't get it for free, she would throw a fit (like I said, she's un-balanced) and demand it free "'cuz she was the police". I.A.D. was notified, and they caught her in the act at a Starbuck's in 019 in 2004. If I'm not mistaken, she has a mugshot in the system. She HAS ABSOLUTELY NO BUSINESS BEING ON THIS JOB, and yet, they've kept her on all these years. Granted, she's not out on the streets anymore, but she shouldn't have ever been hired in the first place.

There is no comparison between demanding coffee and what Cozzi did. He got lucky in the police friendly state courts. I don't care about the suspension . . . did he get the counseling he needs? Revisiting psychological testing for ALL over the course of the time you collect a check should be MANDATORY. I can think of a handful of whackjobs walking around in uniform that have a lot of people fooled - but they are NUTS. I think they are inbred. Wanna know who they are?

Yes, she did...not in the academy, but at the initial pee test. I was detailed to Personnel at the time. Nothing like seeing a little bit of turd floating in the cup when she brought it to be split, sealed, signed etc.
Her husband was a Deputy Fire Commissioner, I guess he still has his clout.
She went to 020 for her field training, she ran into "problems" after a week or so with her Patrol Specialist and went to 019 on a phone order.

This incident and actions of this officer are NOT reflective of the true integrity,honesty, and hard work that is the Chicago Police Department. I am a Chicago Police Officer and have been for a long time. I along with many of my fellow officers are upset that another person who has no business being on the job has cast the good hard working honest police officers in a negative light.

The president of the Chicago Police Board is Demetrius Carney (the Carneys of County Cook). He was a partner at Wildman, Harrold, Allan and Dixon. This particular law firm represents numerous sister agencies of the City of Chicago (CTA, Forest Preserve District, et al). Mr. Carney and this firm so represented these same separate govermental units when the Police Board fired Comito and Thiel during the Mearday debacle. I brought this apparent conflict of intrest to the attention of FOP attorney Paul Gieger at the time and he did not appear too impressed about this apparent conflict of intrest. Think this law firm would still be retained by those agencies if Carney ruled in favor of the officers? Propriety has never stood in the way of a lawyer trying to hustle a buck.

Due to recent health issues (it's tough to get old) I do not do much coffee drinking anymore. However, when I do partake of the occasional cup I stop at the D & D on Higgins and Nagle.
The people who run that store are great to the Police and won't take a dime from you. I really appreciate it and go out of my way to tip atleast the price of the cup.
I guess what I am saying is that we should remember not to abuse those people who still look out for us. Leave a tip, offer thanks, don't abuse the hospitality of others.

I remember something about a lawsuit years back (forgot the year) where the City was forced to hire a bunch of whack-jobs after they were weeded out of the hiring process due to failing the psychological exam.
I have come in contact with a few of these so-called sane officers over the years. The ones I've met aren't fit to shine shoes, let alone carry a firearm.
You just have to LOVE this city!!!

There was a line behind me and I don't really care about the 15 cents. I told him don't worry about it. The manager came up and said thats a relief. That they just had a OFF DUTY female Chicago Cop with her husband and demanded a discount and raised hell when she was told it is reserved for on duty cops. They gave it to her just to shut her up. I was so ashamed I never went back...
Last month there was a Lt. in Fl. who done the same but was FIRED!!!

And that's totally because the viewers/readers of the bunk the media whore produce are ignorant, in many ways, of the value to their lives, and very existence, that police officers contribute to every minute, of every hour, of every day, of every week, of every month, of every year of those viewers/readers self-centered, self-focussed and selfish lives.

Only then will the viewers/readers begin to realize and value the individuals who make it possible for so many to live their lives with so little awareness of how close, each and every day, those lives are to being cut short.
If the police would refuse to act as the Daley/Stroger/Madigan/Blagobitch/et al's 'revenue agents', and stick strictly to enforcing only those laws based on 1. harm to other's health and life and 2. harm to other's property, the great number of citizens who want to respect and value both the law, and those who enforce the law, wouldn't be so easily bullshitted by the aforementioned media whores.
It takes a perspective of life that goes far beyond the tip of one's nose to appreciate and value those things in life that are worthy of respect and that should be highly valued.
Most of the media whore's viewers/readers choose not to see anything beyond the tips of their noses.
That is why they are so easily led by those noses.

Where is the priority? Police board does not uphold ethics and the law. A officer with mental problems who breaks the law is suspended. Yet, drink while walking and your suspended. They were NOT weeded out of the hiring process due to failing the psychological exam, because they were already hired and in the academy when the brand new extensive psychological testing was administered for the first time ever in relation to CPD hiring, so the conventional wisdom guru at the city corp counsel at that time, not CPD, figured it was way too messy to launch them en masse when a whole bunch failed, however, that group is the reason PPO's are no longer sworn in on the first day they enter the academy, which was a the norm previous to 1976, and the reason that the present day psychological testing is done during the hiring process, not after the person is hired. The powers that be screwed it up the first time, just like they did with random drug. Because of the initial mistakes, some slipped through the cracks until both processes of random drug and psycholgical testing were fine tuned and made bullet proof.
i know that officer L.M. in mass transit 3rd watch demands plastic bags over paper bags during her power shopping while on duty. after 8 hours of shopping she likes to say "i'm done"

I pulled out my $1.25 and went to pay and the young employee told me to wait, he would get his manager to "swipe" his card and give me 10% off. There was a line behind me and I don't really care about the 15 cents. I told him don't worry about it. The manager came up and said thats a relief. That they just had a OFF DUTY female Chicago Cop with her husband and demanded a discount and raised hell when she was told it is reserved for on duty cops. They gave it to her just to shut her up. I spent 8 years in 001, its not the officers that work there it is the outside units that heat things up, most of us had respect for our businesses. many times i would walk into a friendly restaurant and see 2 table of tru or mass transit, etc. and walk out because is was so embarrassed by the way they would take advantage of these places.
