Change of Direction

  • The Fraternal Order of Police appears to be slamming the door on Mayor Daley's appeal for shared sacrifice -- one week after appearing open to concessions to help close Chicago's $400 million deficit.

FOP President Mark Donahue said Tuesday his members are in no mood to match the unpaid furlough days and canceled pay raises affecting the city's non-union workers. Not after spending 14 months in nowhere negotiations on a new contract and watching the waste tied to the Hired Truck, city hiring and minority contracting scandals.

For everyone who called the FOP and let them know in no uncertain terms that unpaid days off was a completely inappropriate response to chronic financial mismanagement by Daley and his minions, pat yourselves on the back for taking charge.

They show us how they feel about the job we do and their message has been received! They give us nothing so they will get nothing!

This may be a tale tell sign that the city's offer for the next police contract is not only weak but insulting.

But time will tell the real motive behind these current statements.

Holy Commonsense Restored Batman!!!

Mark must have had a brain freeze after chewing on too much ice cream.

Da mayor is going to pay for our raises by trashing the CAPS program he started 20 years ago. Thank god!

Maybe he don't like police officers talking to the public anymore. Too influencing.

Maybe he don't want coppers to start talking about running for mayor or alderman. Too destructive.

Seems like da mayor don't like competition. I guess we all just must fall into line again. Collecting a cheap yearly increase.

Wonder if da mayor is going to give us a ten year contract to keep us quiet?

Better put some money where you mouth is? Midget breathe. Because I will be still around for the Olympics pud master.

The FOP is not a union, its just a bargaining unit. If you want it to be a union you need to remove the Police Officers making Captain's pay and install really Labor Savvy people to turn it around. I believe there is about 7,500 non-exempt men and women, this would make it a formitable union in any aspect. The are many labor people our there who are honest and trustworthhy that would play hardball against the city on the CPDs behalf.

Why the hell are the FLOP elected leaders paid at these exempt rates?
I know not all are, but none should be. I thought the reason one runs for FLOP office is to improve working conditions for the rank and file.

In my opinion, there is no reason for it. The BS line about being on the same level as the exempts dos not cut it. Professional labor attorneys should be doing all negotiating on the contract, with the elected representatives sitting in to advise on the union concerns.

All the other crap, picnics, fishing tournament, golf outing, etc. are superfluous.

Get back to basics!!

Apparently the FLOP morons are starting to smell the blood in the water for their ass next.

Starting to get a tad scared when they see thousands of coppers band together to tell the downtown shitheads in no uncertain terms to go fuck themselves if they think we're going to cater to their misspending, crooked deals and public burning of officers for the benefit of those who pay no taxes and use all of the city services.

Maybe they don't start cleaning their shit up they'll find public forums banding together to get them out on their ass. Maybe they think the public forums will produce a candidate for replacement that is accepted by the rank and file who's actively involved in the forums and blogs.

When the day comes that SCC holds their own elections for replacement and shows a full slate of candidates accepted by the large and truly pissed off sector of this department, that may be the day they try to act on our behalf rather than their own. Rather than pick and choose when they'll support their members, they'll be forced to support them on all issues as we tell them to rather than as they feel like.

That's their job. It's what WE want, not what YOU want losers. YOU don't have the right to make our choices for us, that's OUR right.

Oakland PD has a good definition of merit. The create a matrix based on the following things... In the last 3 years the officer is judged on total number of felony arrest, misdemanor arrests, citations issued, sick leave used, IAD complaints (excluding unfounded or exonerated), preventable vehicle collisions, Positive/Neg. Case evals, Comemendations, Awards, Letters of Appreciations, Problem Solving Projects, and Departmental Senority.

Not only that Oakland also gives officers 6% and 8% shift differential for officers working between the hours of 5pm and 7AM.

8/07/2008 05:11:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

another interesting thing Oaklands contract is that they have an out of patrol CAP. Meaning you can only serve in a unit for a max of 5 years and then its back to Patrol...this can be extended each year for a max total of 8 years. In homicide the max you can spend is 10 years.

One has to wonder why the city is so short on funds.
Perhaps part of the paroblem is that since February 2008 the mayor hired a superindentent at $310K.
He then let this superintendent hire four of his fed (FBI) buddies at over 140K each.
Almost one million dollars lost in less than 8 months.
I say lost because these new hires are doing the same jobs as the D.S.' ADS's'; and or Command Staff that they are "assisting"
Kind of like City Hall where you have a Commissioner; Asst. Commissioner; and Officer Mgr.!
The waste in this city is beyond belief and the citizens need to see/hear it.
There are a total of 121 new recruits hired for all of 2008.
Until the commnad staff of this dept. sees that the only way to combat the rising crime is to disband some of the specialized units/cut some of them in half.
Put those officers back into patrol to answer calls.
We aren't getting any more bodies on the street.
ALL DALEY CARES ABOUT IS SAVING MONEY FOR HIS OLYMPIC BID.
He doesn't care where it comes from!

So who paid for Daley's trip to China?
How about cutting take home cars and city gas?
How about making CPTs fill in for DC-Lts for CPTS and make the Gold Stars take a few days unpaid?

Hey White Shirt Apologist Company Puke, The Well ran dry because of mismanagement, malfeasance& blatant corruption. When the City is in the Black did we ever see bonuses or payraises?

It took over 2yrs for Donahue to get 47 police officer out of BIS program. They are really retards.

8/07/2008 11:39:00 AM

There were a helluva of alot more people put in the BIS program then 47. The thing is and what should be brought up is how and why the FOP convienently left of numerous officers out of the grievance process without even telling them after they filed a grievance and many found out after the fact. They had a list of the people who filed and some of those guys saw the list and noticed that a whole helluva lot of guys were'nt even included on the FOP's grievance. Soooooo Sid Davis, whats your response other than stuttering and saying I'll have to look into that. Every guy that went to see him after being placed into BIS was told they were part of the grievance so what the hell happened???????????

""I'm happy for all of you that won't have to take an unpaid furlough day I have to take 3 days off b/c I make 77k. I should have taken a union job if I was going to be in the public sector. So, i'm taking my 14k severance package after 5 yrs of service and going to work in Naperville and probably move there too...""

I'll be sure to cry you a river cause you and your 5 years of service make 77k. What job do you have ? Civilian desk Bitch? As a patrolman with 18.5 years on, my salary is closer to 72K, then 77K
So take your 3 furlo days and kiss
my ass.

How about giving up FOP and getting a Union or the PBPA.

The PBPA? You've got to be kidding me? They're slower than the FOP at getting anything done and they hired the same fool labor attorney from the 18th century to look after things. Check out second city sarge and see how happy they are with the PBPA.

OT:

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

The answer, of course, is yes! I write this because although the city is putting a trememdous amount of cameras up, there are fewer and fewer officers to respond to what is observed on the cameras. The video cameras can and do help to identify the offender...but only after the fact. Great evidence, but a little too late for the person who was shot, robbed, or otherwise. Cameras do not dissuade would-be offenders from shooting, robbing, stealing, selling drugs, or commiting other crimes like a police car will merely by its arrival at a given location. Cameras can not immediately respond...officers can and do. Cameras have little presence when they are placed everywhere because, like anything else in excess, the would-be offender also realizes that there are not enough people to watch every camera...

The point? You can put up all of the cameras you want and they WILL NOT replace or even supplement your police force. This is the reality and needs to be put out there. If no officer is available to respond to a camera sighting, who is following up on what was observed and recorded?

Another OT: I am tired of hearing everyone guess at what the numbers of active officers are. So, does anyone know if a Freedom of Information Act Inquiry for government payroll is a possibility? Will the FOP supply the number of retired vs. new hires over the last three, four, or five years to start our comparison? How about someone ask at an FOP meeting how many dues-paying, active members we currently have, how many are IOD, long-term medical, etc?
I am not sure, but I think only full duty officers receive duty availability pay. If so, would there be a way to figure it out using the payroll numbers? Our checks separate this payment as a different line item and I think it would be pretty easy to figure out. We are smarter than this (to continue to guess when there IS a way to get close to the real number) and someone just has to sit down and add/subtract a little bit. How about comparing the FOP newsletter retirement postings by month as compared to how many graduated in academy classes over the last several years. Here are a number of ways to figure it out...if you care, do so. We all know there are not enough of us out there...and that is the REAL problem.

How about the news today re O'Hare expansion? WGN reporter says Bensenville beefing up police patrols and has hired private security to protect 100's of homes should Daley try another "stunt" like in 2003 and send in bulldozers to invade Bensenville. This after shocking court ruling by some (gee, corrupt, ya think?)Judge Popejoy (sp.?)...

Bensenville residents and attorney say they're shocked at the judges decision due to environmental issues and Daley has no $ to complete plan..

Maybe if he backed off you all could get a contract and the sweet little granny in news clip could keep her house of 50 years.

Caparrelli sympathizers please give me a break. The guy did NOTHING for union members like you and me. NOTHING. Like a politician, he did show up for the union meetings to give his 2 cents, but refused to show up for work. Down with Sid and Fal*** while we're at it. Donahue has actually pulled off a good job, not great, but good.

Can we get rid of Donahue and put Bella in his place?

8/07/2008 08:00:00 PM

In the next election. If he runs. And then it's a toss-up because of all the FOP members, very few vote. Can't commit to anything, most cops. Even to fill out and mail in a ballot. You don't even have to go anywhere; do it at home. But still too lazy. Don't bitch about no change if you're not doing anything to make change.

Why is it that an outside gang team is being sent to the 24th dist? Talk about over saturating a doc zone in an area where it's not that busy, you already have the dist cars, tact teams, gang teams, area 3 saturation cars and now an outside gang team.

The city should just take away those baby-furlo days. Most cops just use them to go to Vegas to gamble away their uniform checks.

ok. I'll just use comp time instead. Most cops ? I haven't been to vegas in 14 years, asswipe. for that matter, a vast majority of my police friends don't go there either. We now have families and go to nice places. And I don't know any friends who are counting on a uniform allowance to go blowing it on gambling. Lemme guess, you are waiting for the retro check to go to the boats and buy a used escalade with 22's, right ?
