Lambert Tree Awarded

  • The Lambert Tree Award, this year’s highest honor for police bravery, went to Deputy Chief Alfonza Wysinger.

On June 23, 2007, Wysinger was attending his grandmother’s 80th birthday party when he saw someone firing a gun down the street. Wysinger jumped off the porch, exchanged gunfire and chased the person down the street, apprehending him. The gunman, who wounded one of Wysinger’s neighbors, was charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

“I didn’t have time to think. I just reacted — basically instinct and training. The final mission was to apprehend the bad guy who had wounded an innocent bystander,” Wysinger said.

Asked if heroics by the boss sent a message to the rank-and-file, Wysinger said, “It’s much better if you lead by example. I’ve always been a firm believer that, if I’m gonna ask you to do it, I’m gonna go out and do it myself. It goes a long way toward boosting morale and showing them how to do things.”

Congratulations.

NOTE: We know that this post is going to head south in a hurry. Overly insulting comments will be removed. Please attempt to make a legitimate cognizant case if you feel the need to go to town. We will confess we aren't happy about this outcome, we have our reasons and we're entitled to our opinions. We're also entitled to keep our opinions to ourselves.

Hmmm, a couple years back my buddy in 18 had a robbery offender point a gun at him... he shot the bad guy, was a good shoot, and got a DC..... If he was a boss would he have gotten a higher honor? Its great that a boss did some heroic work, but this kind of work is done all over the city with much less fanfare....

If you truly wanted to lead by example you should have turned it down so a patrolmen could get it.... kinda like winning the 50/50at a benefit. A LOT of police have done that and more and have NOTHING to show for it.

Any more info on this boss? Did he pass any tests on his own? Relatives?.....

My biggest problem is was this two shit birds taking shots at each other? Was the victim a true citizen in the sense that the victim has no IR #.

I do find it hard to believe that in a whole year there was not a situation in which a officer did not "perform distinguished acts of bravery in the protection of life or property" in which the protection of life of property was not that of a true citizen aka shit head banger deciding to shoot at his girls true baby daddy

Sorry, congratulations may be in order for doing GOOD POLICE WORK, HOWEVER, this incident DOES NOT constitute the Deputy Chief of receiving the Lambert Tree award.

Let’s review; The Commander (at the time) saw an offender with a handgun shooting at a subject; the Commander then opened fire and missed his target. The bad guy got away but was picked up later when he was ratted out.
How many times have officers been in GOOD shootings in the last year which the offender was actually hit not to say KILLED by an officer?

I’m sorry, say what you will about Wysinger being a great guy, but he is NOT deserving of the Lambert Tree this year.
This is just ANOTHER example of what political clout can do. And boy, has it ever helped this guy.

As for the question does this help morale? Hell no, more officers than ever can read between the clouted political corrupt lines on this nonsense.

Giving the Lambert Tree to Wysinger just cheapened that award to no more than a honorable mention. You mean to tell me that this was the most prolific pinch in an entire year? This was done only to boost his career status. What a shame...

I am all for heroics being rewarded and I am all for people taking police actions off duty (even if they have consumed a few beers at a party). I am also in favor of the bosses leading by example......BUT...and this is a huge fucking BUT!!!! No boss should ever take an award above actions taken by his or her subordinates. I approve of and support this guy's actions and I applaud him.....However, there have been numerous other officers who have taken actions that were more deserving of this award. There were numerous officers who took actions similar to this who were punished, suspended and/or fired for their actions.
The simple truth is this....It is really not heroic when a person who is attending a party defends his granny!!! We would all do it. If he defended somebody else's granny or if he wasn't a Commander of Police who got promoted to Deputy Chief shortly after this incident it wouldn't stink so bad!!
If he was a nobody who risked his career and his family's welfare to defend a person not known to him in a part of town where nobody likes him or wants him, for a police department where the bosses will not cover his back then he deserves this award. However, the truth is that if this guy had been a lowly police officer coming to the rescue of Granny-Q-Public under J-Fed he would have been fired. But as a black commander who is mad because somebody attacked his granny's party he gets promoted and awarded the highest medal the department has to offer.
Why did he not use his well paid position to move his granny to a neighborhood where this type of thing doesn't happen??

From everything I have heard this guy is a real stand-up guy but there comes a point where we must call a halt to the nonsense and see that this award truly is nonsense!!

Many have gotten dumped or punished by trying to lead by example out here from bosses to quality officers!

Depends on your boss and how much stock or benefit of the doubt he gives you or in some cases your clout.

Now it seems the climate does not benefit those that lead by example as more officers and bosses will think that person is "nuts" for even applying themselves or doing anything out here.

In other words the rumors will start either amongst ourselves or amongst the the brass when analyzing an aggressive copper or boss now!

Signed
Waiting to see where this job goes as nobody trusts anyone out here!

Great job and congrats boss on your award!

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal for a new trial for death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal, convicted in the 1981 killing of a Philadelphia police officer.

The justices did not comment on their action Monday, which leaves in place a state Supreme Court ruling upholding Abu-Jamal's murder conviction.

Separately, a federal appeals court also has upheld the conviction, but ordered a new sentencing hearing.

Officer Daniel Faulkner was shot to death after pulling over Abu-Jamal's brother in an overnight traffic stop.

The case has drawn worldwide attention.

Prosecutors say Faulkner, 25, managed to shoot Abu-Jamal during the confrontation. A wounded Abu-Jamal, his own gun lying nearby, was still at the scene when police arrived, and authorities consider the evidence against him overwhelming.

Abu-Jamal, born Wesley Cook, has argued in numerous appeals that racism by the judge and prosecutors corrupted his 1982 conviction at the hands of a mostly white jury. Prosecutors, meanwhile, had appealed a federal judge's 2001 decision to grant Abu-Jamal a new sentencing hearing because of flawed jury instructions.

Lambert Tree goes to an exmept rank member.

Out of all the patrolmen who have been in shoot outs and did outstanding police work, this year's Lambert Tree is awarded to an exempt member, Deputy Chief Alfonza Wysinger?????????

What a crock of shit.

This dickhead gets into a shoot out with an offender and every shot Deputy Chief Alfonza Wysinger fired at the bad guy MISSED! And he gets the Lambert Tree?

He should of got a refresher course at the gun range, not the department's highest award!

He has the money to move his parents out of the ghetto. He refuses to. He commands the district in which they live. He on views a shooting, not directed towards him. He fires at the offender and misses.
His "competition" (at least the one) was two blueshirts who fight with the offender. The offender pulls a gun on the coppers. Coppers fire and kill the offender.
The facts above are the "testimony" of the officers involved.
Fuck you Daley. Fuck you Weis. And fuck you to any that defend or deny any of the above facts.

As an officer that has been shot in the line of duty, I just about ripped my computer from the wall after reading this. I have always felt slighted by the department for the lack of concern that it showed me for what I have given. This guy chases an offender and gets the Lambert Tree? I'm truly disappointed and embarrassed for the deputy. He should give it back and a officer that truly deserves this award should be wearing it proudly. Did you see the story on Arne Duncan in that he refused a anti-violence award? This is how a true leader leads. This department has lost all credibility, I would like to know and you supervisors have the tools to find who rammed this award up our ass. I want to know what truly heroic feats were passed up for this.

What a surprise, a big boss gets the Department's top award. This is awarded by a committee of, other department top bosses! do they have to have everything? The best spots, the best assignments for their spouses and children, promotions for their family and now awards too.

This is a prime reason why all of the little colored ribbons the department has given me are in a top dresser drawer, never having been worn and never to be worn.

Seems I recall something not long ago where an assault on a police officer wasn't really an assault on a police officer -- under just those circumstances.

Maybe this is something the SA office needs to be reminded of with regard to consistency in charging.

Wysinger did not do anything more than these officers. Clout is all that makes wysinger's arrest special. He has clout and the regular PO that confronts an armed offender and makes the arrest doesnt. J Fraud has jumped the shark he is a joke. Clout is king. This department doesn't give a shit about the working po in a beat car. I worked for Al when he was a Lieutenant in narcotics and I can attest that he is a stand up boss. Not many will argue that point, even if they hold a grudge against Al, bottom line is that he is a first class guy, all the way.

Regardless of how he got the position of Lieutenant in narcotics, once there, all I was only concerned with was how he did his job. While I may not like or agree with the merit process this department has, at times, the right guy gets the right job and the merit process works out like it should. That is, get qualified people who know what they are doing into spots were they can do more good, not promote an Alderman’s nephew because his last name is Burke.

I say all of this because I do not agree with Al getting this award, and I respect the man, the leader, and I do respect what he did – it takes courage. Thing is, I have done this before, shoot out with an offender, and I was told it was my job. That was it. Oh, and free pizza too.

I feel, strike that, I KNOW that there were many more BLUE SHIRTS who did actions even more heroic than Al’s, and even more noble as well, but we will never hear about them because, aghast, they are BLUE SHIRTS.

All that does is build resentment in the working, street level grunt, the BLUE SHIRT. To think that you go out daily an do stuff, and you do it not to be recognized, but because you have self pride and because that is why you signed up, to think that when you do get into something that should be recognized and it is not, but a boss gets it, how can you not resent that?

Frustrated but close to pulling the plug anyway so what does it matter.

lambert tree for this? this is the kind of shit that happens to coppers all the time off duty, on duty, whatever... while a great job by wysinger, it's a story that's played out a couple dozen times a year in this city by coppers who are as equally brave.

the story of the fireman winning the carter harrison award was also a good one. again, firemen run into buildings all the time, on and off duty and rescue people.

i can't help but wonder if their rank helped them win the big awards over some of the rank and file guys who have performed some equally, if not more-so, heroic deeds in the past year.

as a side note, there were a couple cops in 014 i saw on the news who ran into a burning building and saved an entire family. i think, if anything, this is even more heroic because these guys dont have the training for that kind of thing!

At least we know who Jody's replacement will be when he heads out of town. You can tell me Wysinger's a great guy all you want, this is who he really is. A political hack that would take from the grunt to make himself look better. He could have simply said no to the award and it would have been a done deal. If he moves up this will be remembered as his "Cozi". In the days before this blog all we'd have heard about is what a great guy Wysinger is and that he's a hero, copper's cop, blah, blah, blah. Thank God someone is letting the sun shine on this bullshit.

P.S.
My partner & I were involved in the investigation of this shooting. It was no big deal. I can name 2 that I worked on last year that were a lot more valorous. If you took a poll citywide I'm sure the number would be at least 50.

I usually understand most opinions and the reasons being expressed, however, this attack on Deputy Chief Al Wysinger is unwarranted.
I've known the Deputy for many years and consider him an outstanding Police Officer and Supervisor. In fact, until I read the comments on this particular post " Lambert Tree Award", I've NEVER heard a derogatory or negative comment concerning the Deputy's charactor or work ethic.
The Deputy is a standup guy both on and off the job. I've had the pleasure to work with the Deputy when he was a Patrolman and as a Supervisor. Al's attitude and outlook on policing has never changed. I'm sure a great many P.O's deserve the award, but, don't ridicule an Officer because he's an Exempt member. Judge him on his entire policing career. He's a fine Police Officer and is deserving of the award as well as the next guy.

Congratulations,

It's great that he's pointing out how his actions are boosting our morale, then he accepts the department's highest award, which he KNOWS he doesn't deserve, and just reinforces our knowledge of how everything is pure b.s. around here. Now morale goes down even further.

Negative.

The building was vacant, he was never on seen, then offered $20 to the paper car to falsify the report and took 30 days for it.

I can't say that I disagree with the comments that express a certain level of disdain for this award.

IMO, it is far more important to recognize good work by the guys on the front line than the guys sitting in a cushy office most of the time. Does not matter much what line of work it is.

This department has lost it's credibility. I am not saying that the deputy is a bad guy. But let's face it, in the entire year, this was the most heroic action? How about the patrolman who were shot in the line of duty? A PO in my district ran into a burning building and came out with smoke exhaustion and a collapsed lung! Yet the department wants to give the highest award to this exempt member. If he wanted to show REAL LEADERSHIP then he would have declined this award!

I have no problems with ANY copper getting a well deserved award. I will say however that there are MANY real coppers doing shit everyday that do not get awarded anything because they arent sucking ass with the commander or arent the LTs buddy, etc. Lets be real, do we truly believe a deputy was the most heroic copper in the past yr? How many coppers had MULTIPLE gun arrests after foot chases? I venture to bet MANY did. Im sorry but i know what i do when Im at work and I dont need any awards from this shit dept to justify myself. Many of them are all BS political awards. I know there are the few that are legit, but realistically have u ever noticed the coppers in units(you know the phone call police?) look at their uniforms, u swear they invaded and conquered 5 different countries with all the shit on their uniforms. Keep your ribbons, I will continue to be the police and know that I do my job regardless of what ribbons i get. i know there are MANY, MANY great coppers that simply are not recognized on this dept and to give this award to a deputy who probably made only that ONE arrest all yr seems again to me to be a slap in the face of the coppers doing this on a daily basis!

For all you guys who say what a stand up guy Wysinger is, this proves you are wrong. He is a piece of @#$%. Just like Finnegan proving his entire police career was a lie, Wysinger (in having the balls to accept this award) just proves he is a $$#%head, taking what he doesn't deserve. If he was half (no, one-tenth) the man you think he is, he wouldn't have even considered accepting this award. The fact that he did tells us all we need to know about him.

SCC

Iam sure this is a legitimate incident, and a good brave piece of police work for a PO of any rank. But hardly an award of this caliber. Off and On duty POs get involved in on view shots fired at them or another person constantly. In many cases it ends up with a CR # on the officer if he has been drinking, even though he was not looking for trouble it found him. Taking police actions are what we are paid to do and supposed to do. Was this outside of the normal actions one would expect to see on or off duty. Yes most definitely. Was it a Lambert Tree quality incident? Afraid not. A Dept. Commendation would have been most appropriate for this incident. I even think Wysinger would most probably agree if he were being candid about it. His comments on TV were intelligent , and honest. The part about leading by example shows he is a true leader and most likely a "good boss". But the awards committee that gave him that recognition should be ashamed of their actions. That means you 1st Deputy Jimmy Jackson, you run that show, you just cheapened that award, and in fact lessened its value to Wysinger and any future recepients, who will now be questioned as if they didnt deserve to get it. Once again not taking away from the actions of the Deputy Chief, but I have become involved in similar incidents off duty , I didnt fire my weapon, but apprehended the bad guy, and simply turned it over to the on duty tac guys and went home. Some alcohol was involved I had been drinking for about 1 hour after work,so I didnt want to get jammed up I was sober but smart. Its happened to us all. Not a big deal shouldnt be made one. Another J-Fraud Dog and Pony show trying to show how good work is recognized, you made a mistake on this one guys.

I read in the paper Arne Duncan had the common sense enough to turn down a “anti-Violence” award,. Stating “I don’t deserve it,” and he’s right he does not deserve it. You have to at least give this political hack credit for good politics. Then you consider Wysinger, a goof for sure, but were is his common sense to say “look, give it to a deserving Patrolman,” but not this greedy M-F’er, he say “give it to me baby.” He should be ashamed. Lambert Tree award what a joke. Hey Jody from now on give all the awards to the half-ass “play-police” bosses, that only get press because everyone is so shocked they did shit anyway. Another incident proving what a crock of shit this whole Police department has become.

In a department with rock bottom morale the awarding of the Department's highest honor to a FUCKING EXEMPT BOSS is sure to inspire us to do even less.

Good boss or not, good man or not, he is a boss and should have politely said thanks but no thanks, give it to a patrolman, THEN he would have garnered some respect for himself and the department.

Instead he is there grinning like a hyena with his new ribbon. Fuck this place.

MIKE METTE FREE!

Chicago cop freed from Iowa prison
October 8, 2008 at 4:22 PM

ROCKWELL CITY, Iowa. - After 346 days in prison for a wrongful assault conviction, Chicago Police Officer Michael Mette walked out of the North Central Correctional Facility this afternoon into the arms of his waiting family.

About 3:40 p.m., Mette emerged from a small guard house to the side of the main prison gate, holding a box of his belongings. He was calm, but a big smile broke across his face when he saw his mother, Patricia, his father, Bob, and his girlfriend, Olga Hill, waiting for him.

Patricia Mette embraced her son in a long hug and sobbed. After an emotional reunion, Mette told reporters that he was glad his ordeal was over.

Out of no where Jackson jumps the guy and his gun discharges with a round whizzing right past the head of an officer..Most there were dumbfounded by his actions but he get's award of valor..I know two coppers personally who disarmed a suicidal subject armed with a knife, one of the officers was cut, and neither got shit...And they didn't almost get a copper shot..Jackson is a great guy and all but these are just more examples of them thinking we're stupid...

Just wait and see, the SWAT guy will get every medal under the sun come next Recognition Award Ceremony....remember the SWAT guy that got the Police Medal for the hostage siege downtown in 2006 and the 1st responding officers from the 1st District who exchanged gun fire with the offender initially received nothing until some people bitched. The SWAT guy has 50 minutes to set up with complete cover and is in very little risk of getting shot and they took care of him big time.

What about the officer at the Dominick's that killed the offender after his partner and back up ran...Did he get anything? That was truly deserving!

If you very have the unlucky circumstances of being shot make sure you demand every medal the department offers is submitted and the outside agency medals as well...most of these spineless bosses don't want you to have more than they have so don't count on it.

you mean to tell me that there were no other P.O.'s that did something good for that year. I find that hard to believe.

Did you get a tummy rub with that award from j-fed???

That jag-off Sgt Adam Z. from 011 did the same type of thing a couple years ago with Operation Safe Summer. That J.O. wrote up a problem solving award that included all the white shirts, including the current First Deputy because he was the commander of 011, with a sprinkling of P.O.s detailed from other districts.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH I GOT THAT AWARD!!! NICE GOING ADAM Z!!!

(ot) Just read the scum times article about manpower shortage at midway! Who is volpe? The budget goof! On midnights when I work we sometimes have 3 coppers we are very short! The special guys do not show up half the time and the lt ordered that no replacements are to be called in. So the money goes right into daleys pocket as usual! Morale is low as it is, we are short everywhere including all the districts, but they now come up with "strike force", lets hope they find the "money train"! Whoever thought of this watches the shield way to much WTF! If you are stupid enough to join this, hope they set up fund raisers for all of you! Keep paying into my pension kids thanks!

10/08/2008 12:27:00 PM

In addition hey boss why do you have a d-2 paid girl on midnights who would be a great fto, working at midway while everyone else makes d-1? Why not move her as the lt there will not, has no clue how to do it!

Does that mean if I get into an off-duty shooting at my mom's party and miss the target I'll get the Lambert Tree award? Does that mean I won't have to blow and go to call back? Just wondering.

Very wise post. Thanks for pointing it out to all. Because if it WAS a P/O, that is FOR SURE what would've happened, it'd be front page, etc...and not in a Good way.

Wysinger is overhyped I work in 15 and 15 had to sit on his grandmas house for a month. Wouldnt it be nice to have the power to put a car and a pod outside of your relatives house. All he did was use the blue shirts to pump up his numbers. Cops with good numbers were not allowed to leave because he didnt want to lose the numbers. You would have a par form to go to a unit. They would never get the form. He is a nice guy though, but it was always about him when he was in 15.

At the risk of sounding negative - Wysinger getting this award were similar situations involving lower ranking personnel have been shunned is no different then the U of C scholarship program. It seems bosses children seem to be smarter than the children of lesser connected members. I speak from experience. My daughter applied and was denied so the daughter of the then District Commander of the 21st District could attend the university located in the 21st District. The symmetry is as obvious as the nose on your face. Milla - McNulty - Gross - etc. etc. are but a few of the last names of scholarship winners. By the way, my daughter attended school with the 21st District Commander's daughter and placed 18 places ahead in the final class standings. I was told my daughter did not have the necessary community volunteer credentials to be considered. I was a PO the winner's daughter was a Commander. My daughter worked after school to save for her college education and the Commander's daughter volunteered. He earned appx. 110 K a year then and I earned 52 K. Which family was in more need of a scholarship?

Both of these situations are just another example of the "special" status exempt members of this Department have.

I arrested a guy for armed robbery, (in progress) weapon recovered, partners got offender #2. No citizens hurt. Nothing for us, not even an Honorable Mention.

Rules are different for bosses. They don't have to work the same 8 hours, OK if they skip out early, come in late, do errands, answer to no one, and now, apparently, they get the top awards too.

It is nice to be the boss.

Don't hate on Al. Yes, he has had a blessed career. When Weis leaves (and he will, sometime next year as the downward slide continues, contract or not), Wysinger would be a cinch to be the next Supt. of Police.
Things could be a lot worse. If any of you are awake, and look around this Dept., you know they already are.
Remember, Al didn't nominate himself, others nominated HIM.
Anyone who would be informed that they were going to receive the award would do what Wysinger did:
show up at the appointed time and place in your dress uniform and receive it. Al never made a big deal about the incident when it happened, and didn't go on a "campaign" for recognition.
Stop the hate...he is the Police.
Can't say that about many of Weis's inner circle.

In my district alone I’m surrounded by officers who routinely exhibit the qualities of bravery and excellence needed to deal with dangerous situations on a daily basis. I’d much rather accept the honor of a simple handshake on a job well done from one of these fine officers than wear some trinket on my chest any day.

I think people are more upset at the fact that there is a GLARING problem with the awards system than they are that a boss got the award.... Really, how hard is it for the automated arrest system to flag all arrests that are heavy felonies or part 1's or uuw's or whatever and automatically end up at a sgts' queue for an honorable? The city will spend tons keeping tabs on us.. cameras, gps etc but won't ensure that an 'atta boy' is given when due. And they honestly wonder why morale is in the tank!

10/09/2008 11:23:00 AM

As exempts go, Al Wysinger has a relatively good reputation. If he is indeed a class act, he would accept a well-deserved Dept. Commendation and return the Lambert Tree award.

He would achieve emormous respect, even from his critics. If he keeps the award, this morale busting loss of respect is his problem.

Furthermore, both the Democratic Convention and Crime Reduction ribbons for "breathing" are a shameless disgrace.

We all know why the brass will not designate a ribbon award for making hundreds of Part I felony pinches. At a glance, this would be the most meaningful and defining award on an officer's chest.

DO THE RIGHT THING, AL!

and not to point out the obvious but this job is so f-ed up & ass backwards you would think that the powers that be would want the blueshirts to be rewarded/recognized in a TIMELY FASHION! why the hell in this so called "paramilitary organization" does it take 2 or 3 years for an unclouted blueshirt (who isn't a member of a 6 generation legacy or a member of the "lucky sperm" club) to get an award BUT it takes just a matter of days to be stripped & shipped to 376 on a bullshit beef which shouldn't have been put on paper in the first place... only to be re-instated to be stripped & shipped several years later because the 2 headed monster (ipra/iad) expended hundreds of man hours to track down the bogus complainant? hell, if bis had that luxury the clearance rate wouldn't be so low (imho;)...

I wonder if the 3 SWAT guys that kicked down a door knowing there was an armed offender behind it, were shot at numerous times, killed the bad guy, and recovered the 3 hostages unharmed in 004 early this year will get the Lambert Tree too?

Or the Sgt that took a round in the vest before he and his team finally dropped dude that shot at about 40 different police officers including the helicopter?

Wait... no... they WORK for a living. Its far more heroic when a white shirt that sits in an office all day does it.

He might be a great guy, but Im sure there are a dozen others that deserve the award that didnt get it.

I do find it hard to believe that in a whole year there was not a situation in which a officer did not "perform distinguished acts of bravery in the protection of life or property" in which the protection of life of property was not that of a true citizen aka shit head banger deciding to shoot at his girls true baby daddy

if you ask me the lambert tree for 08 should go to the officer in 008 in the shooting a few weeks ago at 77 and kedzie. offender dead, weapon recovered, and the officer shot him as he was about to stab a citizen. I was a detective on the scene and that shooting was a picture perfect 100% great shoot..they dont get much better than that one.

***************************

Back in '04 P.O.'s in 013 arrested two aggravated armed robbery offenders . Both offenders were wearing masks and armed with pistols robbed a scrap metal joint on Fulton Ave.. Five guys were locked in a trailer, a senior citizen was pistol whipped and I think suffered a heart attack. Almost a hundred thousand dollars was taken. P.O.'s set up a perimeter, offenders ran and were shortly apprehended by P.O.'s in a brief foot chase.
. Weapons were recovered 1 replica and one real pistol. These guys didn't even get an Honorable Mention. However, out of the five or six that were involved in the arrest (Torres, Matthews, Alfaro,Rivera, Cali and a couple of other P.O's name I've now forgotten--sorry), the rest jumped on the paper. Good work though, just to let ya know, people don't forget. If I could still put u in for something, I will.
