Credit Union Problems?

Reports in a number of Comment Sections:
  • Rumors spreading that a mother/daughter team of identity theives have been working at the Patrolmans Credit Union. Mother is an employee, daughter was caught using info. Many P.O.s accounts affected. Anyone have info?

I dont have any info about possible offenders but I can tell you that the credit union has had a huge up tick in financial ID theft type problems. I was the 8th person last week alone to be affected from the north side branch.
    *******************************
I don't know about offenders either, but there have been at least 30 incidents at the 111th Street Branch. Losses anywhere from 600-2000 dollars. They are accessing the accounts through debit cards.

    Be Careful!
Anyone have the full scoop? Credit Union users? Detectives working the pattern?

Off topic but more important than credit union problems. Remember when an officer shot would have been huge news 2 years ago. Now it doesn't even get a mention in the paper (Tribune). Are you kidding me? Been on the job 13 years. 2008 was arguably the worst. God bless Francis, Taylor, Soto and others injured. Productivity and manpower is down. And that will not be reversed in 2009 but will be increased on both levels unfortunately. We all know that the first two-three years an officer is all about arrests until the reality of the justice system sets in for a high percentage of officers. Just be safe out their guys and gals and hope 2009 is better.

I posted this, I spoke to an A/5 detective who is assigned to my case. He related that the A/5 dicks have no idea at this time as to how these thefts are occuring. He even went on to ask me if the credit union employees related any info about possible leads on this. I cannot speak for the south side aspect of these ID thefts but I am feeling pretty vulnerable right now.

I can confirm that there has been numerous incidents of money being with drawled from accounts without authorization by the account holder.

I don't work on the property crime side but as of yesterday I haven't heard of any suspects being named, questioned or arrested.

Off Topic BUT IMPORTANT
WOODBURN, Ore. (AP) — A bomb explosion at a bank killed both a police officer and a state bomb disposal technician, and state police do not have any suspects, officials said Saturday.
Police went to check on a telephoned bomb threat received by a Wells Fargo branch bank in the center of town and found a suspicious device, but that device was determined to be harmless. But police said the investigation there led them to the nearby West Coast office where the bomb was found.
Police wouldn't discuss a possible motive for the bombing. Hastings said he didn't know of any grudges against the West Coast Bank, a statement echoed by West Coast Bank President and CEO Robert Sznewajs.
Woodburn police Capt. Tom Tennant and state Senior Trooper William Hakim, both 51, died at the scene. Tennant was a 28-year veteran of the Woodburn police department, and Hakim, a bomb technician, had been with the force for 11 years.
Woodburn police Chief Scott Russell, 46, was injured and in stable but critical condition at a Portland hospital. He has been with the police department for 20 years.
State police said the inside of the bank was extensively damaged, and a female employee was treated at a hospital and released. Another bank employee was uninjured.
Hastings declined to describe the bomb in detail but indicated it was powerful.
A bank employee found the bomb in bushes outside the bank, and it exploded after officers took it inside.
Hastings said he did not know why the officers took the bomb inside.
Police sealed the area around the bank, and it remained closed Saturday. "There's no indication of further devices," Hastings said.
pLEASE never forget the crazy world we live in!!!

I can tell the readers that I was a victim of this theft. I was contacted on 08 Dec.08 by a rep. of the Credit Union who asked if I had made charges on my debit card from Walmarts out south. I stated I was out of town, at which time she related that 1,400 had been charged to my account. They closed the account, and related to me that when I returned home to come in and fill out some paper work so that I could get the money back. Later that same day I was contacted by a Detective from the Freeport Il. P.D. who related that they had Offenders in custody in regards to my theft. It turns out that these shit heads were taking ten dollar gift cards and erasing the magnetic strip on the back. Once the strips were erased they were putting stolen debit card numbers on the strip and using them to make high ticket electonic purchases. It turns out that these numbers were stolen from a clearing house data base, not in anyway connected to the Credit Union. There has been about fifty victims from our Credit Union. There were also other credit unions involved, (Chicago Teachers Union, AFSCME, Illinois Nurses CU) and others I'm not sure of!! They have other Offenders identified and this is a big investigation!! It could total a million dollars!! The Secret Service is going to take the investigation over once they get done with all the bullshit in D.C.. This is the real story and I have to say our Credit Union could not have treated me any better than they did!!

O.T. On December 6, 2008 at approximately 10:00 AM, Chicago Police Sergeant Gina Dwyer-Meliska suffered cardiac arrest as a result of a condition known as Apical Ballooning Syndrome (ABS). Although Gina was fortunate to receive CPR moments after she collapsed, there was a loss of oxygen for approximately 1-3 minutes during this experience.

Gina has not yet regained consciousness. A balloon inserted into the left ventricle has stabilized her heart and doctors are confident that her heart will eventually recover. However, the biggest concern now is any neurological damage that may have occurred due to her loss of oxygen.

Gina and her family are devout Catholics who believe in the power of prayer. Whatever your faith, they ask that you please offer your prayers and positive thoughts to Gina, her family and her doctors during this time of need.

Apical Ballooning Syndrome was first studied in Japan and it is commonly seen in middle-aged women. It is believed that a primary cause of this condition is extreme stress. If you know Gina you know it is in her nature to work herself to the bone. In addition to working full time, raising three school-aged children and pursuing a Master's Degree, Gina always makes herself available to help her fellow officers in need. Please return the favor by offering your prayers and thoughts to her and her family.

*******************************************

I have been a member of the Credit Union for the last 32 years. The Credit Union used to have relaxed lending standards when I first joined. This is no longer true.

I always liked the automatic payroll deduction for loans and particularly for savings. It was an effortless way for me to accumulate a nice-sized savings account. I wasn't tempted to tap the account because it was so inconvenient to go downtown to withdraw.

The Credit Union now has branches and ATM cards. I have never used either, since this would be counterproductive to my goal of accumulating money. These conveniences are beneficial to many of the members, just not for me.

I am retired and am still saving with the Credit Union via automatic deductions. I may have to reconsider now that it appears that thieves have direct access to the accounts.

I hope that there is not a run on the Credit Union as I would like to continue saving with them.

Like a bank, the Credit Union is FDIC insured, so you would eventually get your money back if the Credit Union or bank failed. The problem would be how long would it take to be reimbursed. One month or 20 years?

While I don't know of an inside connection at the credit union, it would not surprise me....Most, not all banks have mutts working for them. These valued employees have access to your accounts, your age, address, number-ages and incomes of those who live with you etc...The corporate security for these banks are aware of their banks' problems, however, the realm is so daunting that they are only able to make a small ripple in a large lake. While not confirmed, it is widely believed that account information is being accessed and downloaded. The offenders are using visa/mastercard GIFT CARDS, downloading the victims' account information onto these Gift CARDS, which, since they are Visa/MC now become an activated Debit Card. I don't believe they're wiping anyone out, so be sure to view your entire 2008's statement for inconsistencies! Other bank accounts are also vulnerable, so please, check all of them. An account which does not have a charge/Debit card attached to it is less vulnerable. You may wish to consider going back to "OLD SCHOOL" and utilizing an ATM card only....

I hope some of this info is useful for those looking for answers.

Correct and a complete joke! How about the fact that the credit union is suppose to be there to help out its members with cheaper loan rates and higher interest rates but has the worst rates around.

The credit union is supposed to be owned by its members and is not traded publicly or held privately with dividends paid to shair holders. Because of this concept, in theory, you should recieve favorable rates because the credit union does not have to pay money out to share holders or is not a business venture for privet people in order to make money.

So I ask, where is all this extra money that going that would be going to share holders or private investors? THe credit union probably has more employees than you local B of A branch.

Yeah, that makes me feel there is a chance for legitimate advancement on this job...Take advantage of the tuition reimbursement and then bail out after twenty ASAP.Not to mention the fact that the contractual raises fail to keep up with Real World Cost of Living. A city maintenance mechanic makes more than police officers, shows you where you stand. Teachers get 3.5% yearly in retirement we beg for that each contract. When will we wake up? When we are on line for food and qualify for public aid. Only major city left with Draconian residency requirement,(guess public schools are out of the question CPS 50% dropout rate, 80% can not read at 5th grade level after graduating). Tantamount to Child Abuse sending children to that broken educational system. A FAX message was sent out to all CPD Units by 022 when this shit first started as an FYI to any PO's who bank @ the credit union.

I left my bank (had accounts there since I was a kid) and went to the credit union after about the 3rd change of ownership and various other hassles at the bank.....thought I'd be safer

It took a long time, for you to second guess a dead police officer. There can be a number of reasons the device was moved from the outside to the inside. Namely we in the bomb community don't want the media and potential criminal elements to observe our methods of disruption. Maybe it was a mistake made, out of all of the things that make us all human.
Here's a thought, have a little compassion for the guys family who will bury their loved ones around the holidays then wait for the story to unfold so you can make your comments and feel so superior.

Hey brother and sisters in blue,
The ISP Federal Credit Union just took a huge hit from inside just a few eeks ago. They're looking into the company that actually makes the cards. Lots of people affected but they're covered. The people that are gonna take a hit are where the purchases were made cuz the credit/debit companies will not pay out. Good luck but blame it on poor security from within the financial institutions.

Way back when they were on Wabash and there was no OEMC they loaned me money to buy my first set of uniforms, no problem, I just signed and deposited $100 in than account and I had enough to get all my gear.

That did it for me, they have been good to me ever since. People there know me and I know them. I have all loans there, when I need a loan, new car, motorcycle, mortgage etc.

I just got comfortable there and stayed. It's probably not for everyone but I like the place and the people there.

I believe an SCC contributer stated in the last day or so that the Chicago PATROLMANS' Credit Union, no longer has any exclusivity with sworn Chicago Police officers, but is now open to all sorts of civilian city employees.

I was more comfortable under the old credit union, and closed my account back when I learned of the change. Now I'm glad I did!

I too, was a victim of this bs. My debit card NEVER left my possession, yet some KMart in Rockford charged my debit almost $1,500. Employees at the credit union (on 111th) tried passing the buck suggesting that many victims were also victims at 7-11, that 7-11 must have something to do with this. Needless to say, I closed my accounts and opened up somewhere else...a place that's not so Mickey Mouse. What a joke.

I have been with CPFCU for 11 years and have not had one problem with them. When it came to getting my mortgage (5.6%) and a fixed equity loan (7.5%) I was able to close within 2 weeks and 5 days respectively. I had banked with other financial institutions and mortgage companies and I never had the quick turn around as with CPFCU. I have a couple of 36 month CD's paying well over 5%. As for service, again no complaints here. One time, some company in Peoria tried to get $300.00 out of my checking via a debit card. That situation was rectified within 5 business days and I did not lose any money. For those who have had problems, I hope they are remedied quickly and accurately. Of course, the best way to do this is to hire less mutts and more capable financial employees.

I've always made it a point to find out how certain bosses got prompoted....
So when I met a dumb, fat ass sgt. 10 years ago, who only had about 5 on the job, I got curious....
Turns out the now Lt. E. G-M (Bigger ass-still dumb) was Daniel Mahoney's secretary before getting on....
Of course this was back in the day of LARGE signature LOANS for bosses....(Jim M. the Patton of the Airport for one)
So thats how she did it....

P.S. Hasn't the credit union been very quiet about the theft of C.U. funds from Mahoney's kis, the former President?

P.P.S. The City just paid a shit loasd to a copper that E. G-M fucked with, about 15,000.00

Good work boss!!!!

Way better run.

And for those of you who feel a need to go to a physical branch to retrieve cash, please be aware that quite a few financial institutions, particularly the online-centric types, will credit your account for charges incurred using an ATM anywhere. Think E*Trade.

Just make sure your accounts are insured up to 100K or more.

Not necessarily, They dont need your card to clone it. All they need is your number. They can use any kind of card, hotel room credit card key, gift card, etc. Then they use a machine that imprints your number on the card, and now they have your card. They cloned my cpfcu credit card last week. 3 charges of $800.00 at toys r us, $547.00 at walmart and $47.00 at some gas station. Visa called my wife who informed the person that we had both of are cards and that we didnt charge anything. Visa made the corrections, closed the account and sent us new cards. The thing I question is the purchase at toys r us. They made three purchases of over $800.00 within one minute of each other at the same store and know one questioned the purchase

SCC,

A few years back my Wife and I opened an account for our college age son (He has since graduated). About 2 weeks ago he had his account cleaned out to the sum of about $1100 dollars.

The fraudulent charges took place on the Southside and South Suburbs. The Credit Union was great about fixing his account.

I thought someone scanned his card in a tavern downtown; maybe your post had something to do with it???

Thanks

Think outside the box.
The credit union will tell you first hand that the interest rate for new car loans sucks. Used car loans is about the only good thing.
But then again who the hell is getting a used car loan. Someone with crap credit.

Funny how all the complaints about the credit union are from police officers that can't spell. Also funny how the coppers that are complaining, probably have a credit score below 500!!! Those are the people you should blame for high interest rates, not the credit union itself!! If all the members paid their loans off on time and never acrued charges due to their lack of responsibility to pay their bills, the credit union would be able to offer better rates than they already do!!! And as for the person who had to talk to Jim in the Asset Recovery Department... maybe you should stand up and tell your fellow officers that YOU are one of the reasons why we have to make it harder to get loans... b/c people like you decide to not pay your loan for over 6 months!!! That would be the only reason you would be directed to the cu's attorney's and talking to anyone in that department in the first place!!! And the nerve of everyone to think that pulling your $ from the cu is the best idea!!! What about all the coppers that have currently been arrested for their own "inside conspiracy"? Did the credit union get up and say that they would not lend to such criminals? That along with a copy of your credit report and pay stub you would need to get background checks, lie detector tests, etc? No... The credit union paid for a sign that specifically stated "Thank you Chicago Police Officers"!!! And you know why? Because even if there is an inside job going on inside the credit union, there are more diligent, respectible, intelligent employees that work there that do their job well everyday, just like there are police officers that do their job well everyday!!! The criminals that have worked there have always been caught and prosecuted for their wrong doing's. One bad incident makes everyone associated just as terrible?? Also, I think you are forgetting that the current CEO of the credit union opened the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation ... how's that for not caring about Chicago Police Officers and their needs? You shouldn't give financial advice to anyone when you have no knowledge of it yourself!! Educate yourself to make your own decisions... consider the sources of people that are giving you this info. Of course someone with a credit score of 500 is going to get a "400%" loan, and of course the people that need to talk to the legal department of a financial institution are going to tell you that the place sucks. Expanding the membership is only going to benefit the members who utilize it, the more members with more money, the better payout benefits and loan rates you will receive!! Also remember that you are the police and you should know more than ANYONE that there are criminals EVERYWHERE and they can not always be avoided. Believe that justice will be served!! Thank you credit union for all of the advantages that you give to Chicago Police Officers and their families!!
