More Questions About Meters

From a whole passel of e-mails we got today (ok, it was three e-mails):
  • Who writes tickets on violators?
  • If tickets are written by the private company, who applies the Denver Boot?
  • How does the private company get owner information?
The law used to read that only sworn officers could wrote City violations. That was changed so Streets and San personnel could cite cars parked in street cleaning zones. Now even more people can write parkers so Daley gets his money.

We're pretty certain that only the Department of Revenue is allowed to boot vehicles. There was some private lot that attempted to boot cars who parked there in violation of signs, but they were relegated to calling for towing outfits like Lincoln and Rendered Services to patrol the lots. Someone can tell us if that has changed.

The private company having access to citizens' info is more troubling. As pointed out by a regular reader, police undergo training and are familiar with the law and can be held criminally and administratively liable for misuse of LEADS, Secretary of State data and other Departmental tools. Private "for-profit" enterprises with unknown or inadequate screening processes for their employees opens up a whole can of worms for government data collection ending up in the wrong hands. We've all heard stories of CPD civilians farming out officers personal data to gangs and even sworn members serving time or being terminated for doing background checks improperly. Who watches the private company running the meters and what information are they going to have access to?

Answers?

Never write another meter ticket..EVER! This guy will sell everything before he leaves office...hope he dies before he ruins everything. Short term fixes for short term gain for long term misery...the Chicago Way.

I don't personally care who writes the ticket.

As for how the tickets are processed, that is a detail to be worked out.

Government employees of all types have a long history of misusing government resources. It won't be any worse if it is a private company, and they can be more easily dealt with if need be.

SCC, if you are suggesting that civilian workers would mis-use private personal information that's just silly! Silly, silly, silly.

Anybody who does anything to generate revenue for this group of criminals is insane. Who cares who writes tickets, not one policeman should write tickets.
Everyone should turn their ticket books in, it is just too bad there is a certain number of policeman out there, I like to call them suck asses, who will still write parking tickets and moving violations.

assuming that this private firm will be able to access LEADS......all officers should have their car(s) registered to their unit/district of assignment. also make sure that your drivers license info is NOT attached to the plate info. state law allows this. this should be done anyway

The fact that this company is planning to raise the meter fees from .25 to $1 guarantees that I won't write any meters for them. Not that I do now anyway. I will not participate in their greed.

In regards to License Plate info, it's a matter of public record. You can buy the info off of the internet for a fee.

I'm sure the media company's do not have access to LEADS, NCIC, NLETS, etc.

"Chicago, IL—Chicago’s Mayor and Aldermen approved a plan to make Chicagoans even more miserable than they are as some of the most overtaxed citizens in the nation.

They are going to let private vendors handle the meters and soon to be increased fees. This hurts business, jobs and citizens alike. Chicago's rank and file cops hate this meter extortion too.

What’s the solution you ask? That’s just too simple, crazy glue, washers, and courage. Hammers and pipe cutter work wonders too. If the meters are destroyed they can’t be used to extort money from anyone. If the cost of meter repair exceeds the revenue they are gone. That’s pure and simple.

The only question I ask Americans is whether or not the participants in the Boston Tea Party would tolerate parking meter extortion by any government?

Don't snitch on meter vandals!

If you’re picked to sit on a jury for someone accused of parking meter vandalism simply acquit that defendant. Shake his or her hand after the trial and government may just get the message!"

I would never pinch a meter vandal under this kind of garbage!

As far as the meter companh having access to records, why would they need any info at all. All the will be doing is plugging in the plate number on their little computer and developing a list which will most likely be handed to some City entity for enforcement. That entity will most likely be a newly created bureau with a six figure "Director".

Daleys crime machine continues its rise, look at what the feds did to harvey why not city hall?

While I admit I don't know for sure, you can most likely count on the fact that whatever contract the company signed with the city to fish the endless well of parking money, well that it included a provision that made the Dept of Revenue and the Police the lackeys of the private company (for writing tickets and such(

You can also pretty much count on your command staff feeling massive pressure to make sure the private company's revenue stream is nice and lucrative.

But hey, what do I know?

new meter deal is only revenue provided by the meters, all tickets and revenue generated by the tickets goto the city and written by city,,, The private company has nothing to do with ticketing

Off topic
I am not a member of the CPD but I was reading all the comments about the Burge Tab. And there is another twist that you don't realize YET. There were comments made about Daley telling the FOP to pay for it to help save Daleys a$$. And we all know how the city and Daley works and this does not seam far fetched.
But there is a twist with the lawyer that Burge is using. Rick Beuke use to work for the states attorneys office when Daley was the boss and also is related to the Daley family in a round about way. Daley even attended Beukes wedding back in the early 80's.

Just something else for you to consider.

Always fun watching the way politics works in this GREAT city

We have 25 Districts and 5 Areas, Headquarters, Homan and Arthington, and a number of garages. What would the city get if they autioned off each facility and the employees in each one including the officers. Each district would pick up a corporate sponsor such as the 1st District would be Citi Bank loss prevention District, 22nd District would be the 7-11 facility. Revenue would be gained by tickets and fines. Garages would be private and make more money by charging 7-11 District and Citi Bank District to maintain the cars and take a little money in on he side. All kinds of money making opportunities. Next we can look at the Fire Department. Oh we have a grand future ahead.

Is the private company going to try and enforce violations on madison in 011. I would love to see that. I was silly enough to write some years ago while on a foot post there. The revs threw a fit and I was quickly told that they are not to be enforced.

A Sergeant told me that shortshank's son works for the company that will operate the meters, but the son is not with the division of company who will have control of the meters. For example, Morgan Stanley (just a guess at the correct company name) has a divison that will operate the meters and the shortshank's son works for the leasing division of Morgan Stanley. Who's the company and where does the mayor's son work? What's shortshank's family going to get out of this deal? Is the son a high priced paper shuffle browsing the internet just to have a company get this deal?

FYI...I worked for an investigative firm for several years before coming on this job and we ran license plates everyday. The firm paid a fee to the states and was able to get any vehicle registration they needed. We were even able to run a name and they would give us any vehicle that was registered in that individual's name. I know it sucks, but I guess everything is for sale in government. That is why I do not display any FOP/police markings on my vehicle.

Sure thing. It's called a "Comment Section." If you noticed the last line, we asked for answers to our questions and many provided them. So they aren't so much corrections as clarifications to legit questions that ought to have been answered during public hearings on the whole matter, instead of crammed down everyone's throat by the rubber stamp council.

You ever stop being sanctimonious and actually try to help out?
