No Salt Plus Motorcycles?

Anyone want to guess how the new "no salt" policy is going to affect Western Avenue for the Toys for Tots Motorcycle Ride? And is J-Fed riding this year?

UPDATE: We've had reports of at least one accident due to ice. Others have said there's a thin sheet even on the main streets. Stay safe, everyone!

This is silly, silly, just plain silly.

We ask that all participants bring their own 26 ounce container of Morton salt, iodized or otherwise.

"When it rains, it pours" (and turns into *black ice.

* (No offense to the African-American community. We will now refer to it as "white ice" forthwith.)

Cost of De-Icing Runways Shooting Up 200%

Chicago's Aviation Department could spend as much as $18.5 million more to keep runways clear of snow and ice at Midway and O'Hare this winter, due to the higher price of de-icing solution.

A strike by Canadian potash mine workers, Gulf Coast hurricanes and the rising cost of chemicals in general all helped drive up prices, said Keith Johnson, CEO of Cyrotech, a maker of de-icing chemicals.

The Federal Aviation Administration has warned airports that they needed to prepare for a possible shortage, said FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory.

Chicago was able to secure enough de-icer for both airports, but at a price three times higher than last year, according to Aviation Department spokeswoman Karen Pride. The fluid, potassium acetate, cost the city $3.81 a gallon last year -- compared with $11.49 a gallon this year.

The city used 2.4 million gallons between November and March last winter. If this winter is as bad as last year's, the city could spend $27.6 million on de-icer, compared with $9.1 million last year.

United Airlines does not expect the shortage to lead to delays.

"We've been assured by the airports that there will be adequate de-icing fluid for the winter," said spokeswoman Megan McCarthy.

The shortage of de-icing fluid for runways does not affect the availability of de-icing fluid for aircraft, McCarthy said.

So we leased Midway and we still have to pay for all the de-icing! Amazing! So I guess since I am leasing a car - the dealer should come out and de-ice my car and brush the snow off it each day?

my wife was in an accident on a side street due to the ice. she was stopped at a stop sign facing east and the car coming west attempted to stop at the stop sign but couldnt stop and hit the front of her new car...well fairly new. but the point is that i dont blame the other driver at all, my wife said the other driver was not going very fast but her car just slid right through the intersection and into hers...however,i do blame the ineffective snow removal, if there was salt down, we wouldnt have to be going through all of this sh*t. have a good holiday season officers and stay safe, belive it or not the citizens(tax paying ones at least) of chicago do appreciate you and we hope you continue to do good work. happy holidays.

Anyone want to guess how the new "no salt" policy is going to affect life five months out of the year in "the most bicycle-friendly city in the United States?"

http://www.bike2015plan.org/

Even my over-300-pound curb weight at times -- myself, the bicycle, heavy winter clothing, tools, spares, and a full load of groceries (over sixty cans not long ago, and a lot else besides) -- won't get me in contact with the pavement on packed-solid, frozen, rutted-up streets.

It's a lot different than having your press secretary call all the TV stations, putting on a fresh self-promoting T-shirt, then riding your brand-new bicycle once around the block on a fine June day with ten huge bodyguards puffing along behind you...

Winter is miserable enough without being forced out onto dangerous arterial streets with blind idiot drivers who literally don't even scrape the snow off their windows. Rolling igloos.

Oops -- the main streets aren't being plowed much anymore either...

Mayor Daley is clinically insane.

From the west end of 008.
It was pretty cold out this morning so I don't think I would have rode the Fat Boy even if I could have driven it out of the garage and down the snowy and iced over alley and then onto the snow covered icey streets so I could hope to stop without skidding out onto Archer Avenue.
The truth is it is bad enough in the car.Why would I even try to get the bike out?

If you are assigned a traffic crash remember to state the road conditons in your report. Maybe Shortshanks will have to pay as the city has a duty to maintain the roadway and keep it free and clear of debris, snow and ice. We pay a heavy road tax here in the city with 75.00 city stickers for a passenger vehicle an 125.00 for a sport utility.

No money for salt...but let's shout out where you see Daley waste our money in other places.

Why isn't Shortshanks canceling any Olympic plans, or going to congress hat in hand like banks and the big three auto makers.

I think SCC should publish the home numbers of all 50 alderman. Then set an evening time slot, to get all the readers, and all the reader's friends and neighbors to call and demand the streets be plowed and salted. Even if it means no Olympics.

Remember, Mickey Bilandic, who said, "Snow?!?! What snow?"

Actually, you can file a claim. Make sure you file an accident report.

I'm not a cop but I believe it is classified as an accident with the ground (same concept as the pothole claim). Maybe one of the resident CPD guys can confirm.

I'm sure somewhere on the city site there is a claim application.

It may be a pain in the ass, but fuck'em make them pay.

wtf is going on with these assclown w/c's, d/c's & these district holiday parties? (an insult to anyone who tries to practice a modicum of Chistianity to refer to these sordid affairs as Christmas parties).

you idiots just don't get it... no policeman in his right mind wants to have ANYTHING to do with a company holiday holiday party with all the head hunting going on... if the captain or d/c overcommitted on the number of bodies they promised at these venues then THEY should pony up and make up the difference... they make enough money. it's a sin and a shame that they feel they have to bully policemen because THEIR mouths wrote checks their asses can't cash. most of you wouldn't do shit to help an officer unless there was benefit for you...selfish bastards! leave us the fuck alone! we have enough to worry about trying to keep body, mind & soul together and looking after OUR family obligations than to be aggravated with being checked off by you or the front office snitches & ass whores at a sorry ass company holiday party... get fucked...our 1st loyalty is to provide for our families and come home to them in one piece... followed by protecting our fellow officers from harm followed by protecting those who can't protect themselves... the department hierarchy can fend for themselves...just ask them. oops...better buy a ticket to the party first. Ho Ho Ho... now stand with the other hoes around the fire barrel & cry about how it would be if you ran it...

Yea I saw those American Knights at a Toys for Tots drop off. Of course it was a bar called cc grove and not one of them on a bike. There were however 2 guys at cc grove who were not in the American Knights. The AK didn't like them very much and you can imagine what happened next. All I remember is seeing all the American Knights jump on top of these two spanish guys punching and kicking them. It was pretty sad to see coppers now of days doing such stupid stuff. You can tell they are a bunch of 1%er wannabes I think law enforcement clubs are great but this one is a joke. My buddy told me its not both clubs just the Illinois members that are 1% wannabes. I guess there is a Chicago branch of American Knights that dont act like the Illinois branch but they sure make them all look bad! I didnt even realize the difference until I saw them fighting two guys they didnt like. I left after that because they all sat there drinking afterwards like they did something special. You really are pathetic!! If you don't want to go to your districts Christmas party, don't go! Do be a tool and get on your soapbox about why no one should go to their party. My districts party is a Christmas/Retirement party, honoring those who've retired this year. Sorry, but with 23+ yrs on this job I always go to the party to socialize with the many friends I've made on this job and to HONOR the rerirees who gave a great portion of their lives to this job. I think they've earned that! Trying to guilt those who choose to go with your "family" theory is complete bullshit. Something tells me you don't have too many friends on this job. OK... If you would pay attention, you'll see that the common thread to the post in question and others that are similar is that the company holiday parties have degenerated into something that is 180 degrees opposite of their stated purpose. I would gather that the bosses in your unit of assignment are competent and do not take joy in mistreating their subordinates. Congrats, you're the exception not the rule.

I'm trying to give you the benefit of a doubt regarding having a whole "23+ years" on the job but based on the content of your response, you're blind or clueless as to the strong arm tactics & threats some bosses are resorting to in order to put "asses in chairs" at these events. Don't be so quick & self righteous to cloak yourself in "honoring" retirees. I guess you never had a boss run at you for your refusal to buy a ticket.

I guess when you bid to a new unit of assignment, said boss won't send paperwork to your new boss trying to make you a personal concern because you refused to bow down to being strong armed. (I hope for your sake the new boss tells the old one in a phone call & to-from to get bent). I guess from your response you never even had two seconds of hard time on this job, must be nice.

So your defense of the indefensible is full of holes. You want to honor a soon to be retiree? I found that sometimes a handshake & thank you means more than a round of soda pops. Most retirees just want to leave w/o fanfare. Honor them by being worthy of your "23+ years" on the job and working on your reading and comprehension skills along with framing your response in some sort of sensible/reasonable context before you flame others, sir/ma'am.

as always, please stay safe...

Lt. Ellen seldom worked an 8 hour day when assigned to both the 3rd watch and 2nd watch in 009. A few months before she left 009 to go to Midway she was called on the carpet by Eugene Roy. He told her he would have no more part time Lt.'s. In other words her 4 hour days had come to an end. Ever since then those two really haven't gotten along. If she were to wind up back in 009 she'd have to work 8 hour days and she'd have to work for a commander that doesn't like her.

Don't worry guys. 003 just hit 40 homicides - the most in the last 10 years. Crump-Hales has more to worry about than if people are going to show up at the Christmas Party

Are there enough living people in the district left to hold the event?
