And it exposes a glaring flaw:

This evening, 01 Dec 2008, @ approx 1950 HRS on Zone 2 (019/023)a male voice was heard on the radio calling out a 10-1. The officer could be heard gasping for air, as if he was in the fight of his life. Squad did there best to obtain an address. At first, it sounded as if the officer was at 2900 S. Stewart. Then the voice could be heard asking for an ambulance at 209 S. Throop. Finally, an open key indicated that the officer, BT 2612, was part of an exercise being conducted at the academy and was on the wrong zone.
My point is this, the GPS in the vehicles are an absolute waste of money. They were installed to make The King's men some money and assist in the discipline of officers. THEY WERE NOT INSTALLED FOR OFFICER SAFETY REASONS. Had they been, they would be attached to the radio so that OEMC could locate an officer. Had this been an actual emergency, and the GPS was inbedded in the radio, OEMC could have located the officer in seconds. Instead Zone 2 is notifying Zone 5 and all CW frequecies in an attept to locate this officer. This was valueable time that was lost had this been an actual 10-1. Possible the difference between life or death. Stay safe. St. Jude pray for us.[sic]
All the money spent on GPS for cars is revealed as a waste if no one is near a car, or in this case, even has a car.
And of course, someone not checking the radio settings prior to a drill raised more than a few blood pressures and stress counts. Anyone know why Radio Shop doesn't just disable all the other frequencies on the training radios? Oh wait...there are no training radios. They are all live sets for when the Academy gets deployed. This would seem to be an operational shortcoming based on pinching pennies.

Saw the transfer order today. What really confuses me is how many former SOS guys are jumping to the opportunity to be in MSF? Is it because you guys liked saying you worked in "Unit 153?" Crawling back to working in that unit after the Department dumped all of you because of the actions of a few bag eggs completely bewilders me. Is working in a beat car really that below you that you would rather sell out and work on Jody's new team? This dept gets worse everyday and its sad that we never stick together.

GPS???? I can't even get a spare tire!!
settings on the radios get messed up all the time. Its not the person with the radio(although they need to check their radio often) its the radio. Getting in and out of the car can move the knob once and a while.
I heard Zone 8 searching for a beat about that time. It was some 65 hundred unit call.
Got to agree with you on that GPS locator. A car almost got redlined last night after being called repeatedly. If the car's GPS would have been utilized they could have been found in seconds.

In the area of safery items, how about a contract for Motorola not some cheap copy radio batteries, seems the best we can currently get out of a battery is six (6) hours of life. I realize no at fleet could understand the importance of a good radio battery.
If they want the Academy training to be more realistic the staff should grab the FIRST THREE MOPES they see on the street and tell the recruits "This is your new Mayor, Superintendent and Watch Commander". Play is stopped when the details of a new contract are finally hammered out.

This happened not long ago on Zone 4 also. Call of shots fired at and by police. Turned out to be training at Near North.
I'm a dispatcher on 3rd watch and I was working yesterday when this happened. 3 zones were yelling back and forth on the floor, trying to get these officers help. It seemed like all the other zones told everyone to stand-by while this situation was being handled.
It's hard for us, sometimes, being on the other end of the radio. We can only do so much to make sure someone in trouble gets help. It's hard not knowing if they're ok, if we got them help in time, when we're physically not out there. As for a 10-1, your heart just drops, and until someone gives you that slowdown and says the officer is ok, you're scared.
It's my job to make sure everyone goes home safe and sound. I know it's an annoyance to be checked up on, that street stop for 45 mins, that domestic for an hour with no rd pulled... I just need to know you're alive and kicking.
I appreicate you men and women in blue... stay safe out there ~_^

With Daley not giving us raises we're able to save gas and sleep in the parking lot. We can do it for five days and then drive home and park the mobile home in the driveway on the two days that we're off. Gotta love it.

OT: Just got back from yearly Pennsylvania Thanksgiving/Furlough/yearly shopping trip. 6% on all goods no taxes on clothing. Had to force the HDtv into the minivan with the wife and kids but was much cheaper there. Saved quite a bit because this is done every year. Loved the 1.65 gallon gas too just across the border in Indiana. Thanks Daley/Stroger etc. for the incentive to buy out of state. Saw cigarettes for 4.24 a pack. Damn I was tempted to spend some money and buy and sell here. Thank god I haven't resorted to that yet.

I am glad someone else was at the meeting besides myself.
What Mary forgot to add was the same guys who was bitching about Hubberman, and rightfully so, asked the board that they consider a leased car for the trustees posistion be holds.
Mike states that all the running around that he will be doing in the position that he now holds that it only makes sense that the position has available a leased car. He cited the FOP in the needs to have a leased car and he should as well. He stated since he would be expensing everything he does anyways with his personal car that he might as well have the leased one and that way he is not continually submiting for reimbursment from the Fund.
Thiss Mike Sheilds is turning out to be one shady person in his own right.
It is also common knowledge that he is using this position as a stepping platform to run for FOP.
He ran saying he cared about OUR Pension and he would look out for OUR best interst in the Pension. If that is the case then why would he run for FOP in two years? Does that really sound like he cares about OUR Pension? No!
Mike Shields has only cared about himself and only does something that will benefit HIMSELF.

As a non-cop tax paying citizen most of what I read here makes me sick. Evidently, the officers always are last in the formulation of policy, procedures or purchase of equipment. Police officers should have state of the art tools for their protection and in order to do their job safely and should be first and foremost the most important component when this department decides to do anything. That any of them go to work everyday and risk their lives in spite of the crappy morale, horseshit equipment and media culture is a heroic act in itself.
Unfortunately, all I can do is keep them in my prayers. And imho that's a Goddamn shame.

Furthermore, here's what I saw at the board: Our new trustee spoke eloquently and credibly. All P.O. claims were approved, thanks in large part to the new trustee.
On the issue of a space, our trustee wants one. He doesn't care if it's inside or outside, a couple of blocks away, city owned or private, paid or not. He gets no extra pay for his work at the Board. Every other cop in the City has a place to park, even if they work at O'Hare or Midway. Our trustee is NOT asking for anything outside of what everyone else gets. It does not have to cost a nickel.
Oh, and that bizz-nitch Stephanie Nealy is on the exact same Pension Board and she not only has a parking spot, but a brand new city car and a full time Chicago P.O. "bodyguard." But "Mary" doesn't care about that expensive bullshit. No. "Mary" wants OUR trustee not to have a place to park. "Mary" the Daley operative can go suck it, if you ask me.

I read these comments about officers who don't want to work and blaim this boss or that boss. I work becuase of pride, self-satisfaction, work ethic, self-respect. My youngest child finishes college soon. None of my children has a penny in college loans because I worked and spent my career in court, no bullshit side jobs. Have been a Sgt. for over a decade and still go to court as often as possible. Over the years, I had dozens of police dogs over ask me why I work so hard, don't I know there is a slowdown, oh yes, this has happened several times before. Not one of these dogs has ever offered to pay my bills. I pray some of you young officers remember what you were taught by your parents, teachers, mentors, and just do your job. I will be leaving soon, and this has been the greatest experience of my life, laughing 90% of the day and putting criminals in prison. I do it for my family and myself. No one else.

You are just a looser. What business is it of yours what Joe Blow does? How do you know who the people are that are going into 153? Did you keep the Oct 07 transfer order to compare all future orders to? If so this proves my first comment.
This is a great job, if you can't find a "spot" to do something you may enjoy, other than patrol, then shame on you. No matter what the majority of posters on this blog say, you can find a "spot" in this department without whack. If you have tried and failed, try again. If you have tried many times and failed, then look in the mirror.
The problem with the claim that all non-patrol units are clout, and the people in them are unqualified, is this. If the work is getting done, then the people doing the job are qualified. On the other hand, people with out the "clout" can get into these units, because we all know that not all coppers work. Bosses need people that know what they are doing and do the work. They can't take care of everyone.
Finally, if this job/department sucks so much, then leave. Otherwise shut the fuck up and make lemonade.

Academy has the oldest and outdated equipment. Instructors do the best they can with the few valuable radios they have. Recruits will make mistakes. Unfortunately, they do not have training radios. They still have toy guns for scenarios. Give them the benefit. I am sure they feel very bad about this mistake.
That happened for real on zone 8 this afternoon. Copper calls out that he's fighting a guy and doesn't respond after that. Sector Sgt. calls up and asks squad to pull up the gps on the car. Squad tells him we don't have the gps otherwise she would have used it already.
Believe nothing that comes out of the mayor's mouth.

As a non-cop tax paying citizen most of what I read here makes me sick. Evidently, the officers always are last in the formulation of policy, procedures or purchase of equipment. Police officers should have state of the art tools for their protection and in order to do their job safely and should be first and foremost the most important component when this department decides to do anything. That any of them go to work everyday and risk their lives in spite of the crappy morale, horseshit equipment and media culture is a heroic act in itself.
Unfortunately, all I can do is keep them in my prayers. And imho that's a Goddamn shame.

I knew this would be a problem when I saw that rag tag crew of hillbillies installing the GPS systems in our squad cars on city streets, in parking lots, anywhere they could back up their shit-bag work cars.
Here we are, Chicago, trying to get the Olympics, and we buy our GPS system from Homer and Jethro. This GPS system interfaces with nothing, is connected to none of the department's other computer systems and, has been demonstrated, is no fucking good in an emergency.

The Radios at the Academy have a bleed over problem. They are the old Saber radios that are not used anywhere else. The Academy gets nothing put left overs. They do not even have a charger for the LIDAR's. They trade them out in 001, at Traffic Safety before each class. $110 for the charger. CPD says no money.

Keep rolling the dice. You obviously don't care about your family or loved ones because I know several officers personally that were able to go home because they wore a vest. It will not always save you but at least will give you a chance. It has nothing to do with being scared, just being prepared. Besides that, the department requires you to wear a vest while on street patrol. Guess what happens to death benefits to your family or loved one if you are killed at work and found to not be wearing a vest???

Sorry to tell you but Im in a unit that has the old saber radios. We also get the left overs. Nobody has batteries for them. Chargers dont work. The district laugh at us when we try to stop in for a fresh battery. God forbid dogass commander stick his cowardly neck out to request working equipment for his unit.

there is some one in our district that doesn't wear a vest... It's quite obvious too
zone 11 dispatchers can use the GPS to see where our cars are, I know this because about a month ago they were putting my partner and I down on jobs that we were riding on without us ever going over the air.
