New Schedules Rolled Out

Anyone have reports on how it all went?

We heard that the overlap between shifts is resulting in cops sitting around the stations with no cars in one pilot program. In another, we've heard that since cops did (or didn't) have their days off prior to change day, there are a bunch of people MIA or working two-hour days or burning time to account for the new shifts.

Sounds like high comedy, but if it leads to the elimination of the sixth working day, we'll all look back and laugh some day.

It will be interesting to see how long the "There will be no watch commander between the hours of 0130 and 0530. I wish SO much that our district was one of the ones with the pilot programs... ANY pilot program.

This six straight days just kills me. Seems like i'm always working and then my days off go so fast that it's right back to the six straight. Just really takes its toll on ya after a while.

Guys/Gals in those pilot districts, please consider yourselves lucky and know that there are a lot of people out there that would love to be in your spots.

Although it'll probably be a pretty good working schedule, I'm wondering which of the 35th St geniuses came up with the 4&2 schedule that puts less officers on the street every watch but needed more vehicles assigned to the district? If that's the way the city does more with less than Daley will bankrupt this place within 3 years.

I must once again commend the powers-that-are for the 'think-tank' capabilities they possess. They implement a program/schedule/procedure with NO answers yet alone a modicum of common sense, logic or practical sense.

If anyone saw how the schedule overlaps on paper it was obvious as the 'what to do with this' problem that would arise and the typical 'it doesn't have to make sense, its department policy' showing like a beam of light in a London fog.

I wish the Weis would step up, access this stuff before it gets implemented and hold these 'think tank' persons accountable. If its just too stupid to look at, out on your ear. Don't come up with a solution that is a bigger problem, because that my friend is a WASTE of resources, time, and implementation and yet still A PROBLEM.

Well boys, here is the new schedule, and gosh darn if Helen Keller could recognize it doesn't make sense on paper and will make less sense in practice, but lets run with it. Sink or swim, we came up with the plan (obligatory back patting), we're not giving you any answers, not giving any new equipment, not giving any guidance, but gosh darn we gave you a schedule.

Won't the city just love the idea that we have tons of personnel assigned to work!!! Without ever knowing the truth that they're sure at work, but cannot do a damn thing.

Well, if you worked a ten hour day in Housing...you weren't really working a ten hour day. That was a mess and nobody was there for ten hours, or even close to it. So, I don't put much stock in your opinion of the ten hour day.

If the City wants it... and they do... it is only to benefit the City. Lower costs, less people is not good for us, though. Let the pilot Districts make the call after a prolonged test period. Let them speak at the Union meetings and answer the questions. One thing you can count on, it will cost you - less overtime, more expensive to take a day off, less court and more importantly less backup!

I'm no fan of the six day work week, but 10 hours on the street is a long time to be "on your toes". It seems dangerous and I am sure that aspect doesn't enter into the City's equation. They don't care about your safety.

010 -
there is a full watch compliment for the 10 hr days(5th watch). Meaning 3.5 officers for ea. of the the 6 cars.(usually all cars up and only for the cars south of Cermak)
1st watch has avg 2.1 officers for ea. of thier cars. (many down beat cars and 1 man cars)
3rd watch has 2.2 officers for each car meaning the same (no rapids north of Cermak and one man beat cars)
and

2nd watch has 3.2 officers per car not bad extra cars on days!!!

Guess the commander in 010 is good at sending his already short manpower to the appropriate watches, (higher crime/busier) Probably be a Deputy soon!
Hopefully no one is IOD/medical/ RDO/Furlo on 1st or 2nd watches that would be very dangerous, O'yea forgot it is now overrun with PPOs cause its a training district w/ not enough FTO's. Another great officer saftey idea by the powers that be.

And I worked in 018 during this time and I can tell you that YOU NEVER WORKED A FULL 10 HOUR SHIFT! Not once! Housing never did shit to begin with, but to act like you were there for even 8 hours on the 10 hour schedule is a joke! That unit was the worst ghost payroller in the city! Guess the jokes on me though, I could have bid there and had no integrity too.

So your going to detail a lt. from another district to be a field lt. in 5 and 20. I guess the districts they are coming from don't need supervison. It's hard enough to find lt's to fill in as watch commanders already. So now your putting the Sgt in charge of a place like 5, it's one of the busiest desks in the city, now the desk sgt has to call other disticts to have things approved, ass-a-nine. The ones in 5 can probably handle it, but it shouldn't be all put on them.
This is due to the lt's trying not to let the city screw them over by taking contractual rights away, but for the increased amount of days off there could of been soem type of compromise. But it's kind of ridiculous the hoops being jumped thru, for what amounts to a lt. making about $40.00 to be an acting w/c.
So the 1st watches in area two, 3,4,6, and 22 don't have a managment lt., they are all bid, so anyone they send has to be paid time and 1/2 for the entire tour, quite a bit more than $40.
to 5 and 20, Sgt's and Lt's, good luck getting any time due...

Of course they loved it in Housing, NOBODY ever worked a 10 hour shift.

There were ways around not staying the entire 10 hours, and that includes the Supervisors.

Why do you think Cline stopped it?

10 hour shifts don't work in 24 hour units, they just don't. If they really want to do something that works, put everyone on 12s like they do in LA and many other departments.

I was off so much I didn't know what to do with myself. When those weekends came around - I took mini vacations. You must have no friends or no life, that is why you don't want to be off all those days. I can't believe that anyone would say 10hr work day is bad, especially since they probably never even worked it. Don't say it's bad until you have actualy tried it. I worked it and loved it. So far the 4 day week is fantastic! The last hour or so, mids is out on the street at the same time, so there is little chance of a late job, which is great. It was a nice feeling to work one day and be 1/4 done with your week... The only hiccup is that no one wants to work the desk- it stays 6 on, 2 off and has been reduced to 2 pos (one does radios upstairs, one does everything else)... Still, there are growing pains with every change, and this certainly is for the better, in my opinion!

Everyone involved in the planning and implementation knew there would be bumps in the road. The only way to get this figured out was to get it in place and work it out. It is a schedule in progress, subject to tweaks and changes as problems inevitably come up.

There were problems with every major change, this is about the largest in many years. We finally have a chance to get rid of the hated 6/2 schedule to lets work together to fix the problems and make it workable. It is in all our interests to do so.

Is the 10 hour day really just 10hours, or do they add a half hour for lunch? If not, your only working an extra 1 1/2 hours a day, or 6 hours a week, to get 8 1/2 hours off, not counting the commute for one day. Once your at work, what's an extra hour and a half? Who cares if you sit around the station for awhile if your on the clock?
I'm currently on the 0-hours-a week-send-me-my-money-on-the-first schedule, but a ten hour day sounds pretty good. I would have given my left nut for it when I was "working."
By the way, what's with that retired secret service guy who bragged that the secret service is trained to run toward the sound of gun fire? Who in their right mind would eat a bullet for Richie?
Or use their body to build a protective wall around Blago? Or bite the big one for BHO? Where do they find these soft-balls?

"Cops will like it because more time to spend with the family. "

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's NOT MORE TIME with your family.. you work the same number of hour a year however you work about 52 days less a year.
I work the 10 hour day and I am happy with it HOWEVER.. my kids get out of school at 2:45PM and I'm out the door to work at 3:00PM (instead of leaving at 5:00PM)
I NEVER see them on my work days.
To say the least, I live for my days off so I can be with my kids.
AND as far as cars..
there are NO cars available from 4PM until 6PM when the 10AM-6PM rapid response cars get off work.
Our district notified downtown of this upcoming problem back in early December however they have their heads up their asses as usual.
THAT'S OK WITH ME though...
the city can pay me $40.00 @ hour to sit on my ass and play solitaire.
Since some complete idiot decided to change the start times on the 1st watch to 2100 and 2230, here is the result.
. since there is a 90 minute overlap with the 3rd watch 15 more cars are needed. (only 11 delivered)
. the average milage on the cars is 90,000. No cameras, No PDTs or Mounts, several have no heat and bald tires and the blue lights don't work
. Not enough radios
meanwhile, the regular cars which are fully equipped with new PDTs and expensive camera systems sit in the parking lot collecting snow for 7 hours every day unused.
WHO'S RUNNING THIS DEPARTMENT ANYWAY????
Talking about schedules (off topic)
How the heck do you land a job, where you can just come and go as you please, and not be accountable for it? Doesn't everyone else have to work eight hour days, whether inside a squad car or not? I know I do. Well, anyway, such is the case with the 019 District CAPS office beauty queens, K.S. & M.G. It's like a magic show. Sometimes you see them, and sometimes you don't (but more times, don't). Oh sure, they walk around the station for a while, but then, POOF! Gone for the rest of the day. But you've got to hand it to them, they do put in t/d slips, when someone happens to check-up on them, for not being around the whole day. So I guess that's OK. Pretty nice gig, though, going to just a few beat meetings a month and doing whatever you want the rest of the time. Must be nice.
Hey! Now that we have all the Commanders,Captains, Lieutenants and Sergeants micromanaging and paranoid of losing their spots..........Let them do it all....right!!!????
I do think its fun to watch them scramble over the senseless bullshit and act like its serious shit out here!! I seen some real screwballs!
Half of these bosses we interact with were papershuffling non-aggressive police officers back in their day and now they are trying to ACT like they DID shit when everyone who knows them knows otherwise......EXCEPT JODY who only picked hem because they had IAD or schooling or was trusted to someone in that position....whatever!
Keep fooling em!
Bullshit numbers, missions.....etc.
The REALITY:
NOBODY IS GOING TO PRISON ANYMORE BUT CPD politicians, white collar criminals etc. etc.!
The shit heads of VIOLENCE are winning because it is easier to hang someone that exists on paper I guess!
Look at the JAIL population here and court calls....
Its also REVENGE OF THE NERDS in our department and DUDE knows it and sees it. WE are getting soft....just look at us!!! They are and they see we are afraid of trouble and not interacting like we used to to own the streets!
There are some REAL jagbag COLD killing shithead motherfuckers outside there and we are playing "get the mission numbers with JODY to impress him"!
I think he might be more impressed if we started getting convictions on some serious felons.
Of course also taking the guns off the streets, ticketing or DUI'ing those that NEED it to create REAL numbers, parkers, curfews whatever bullshit, whatever, blah blah! That comes too!
To do it right you need to KEEP TRACK OF CONVICTIONS not arrests you NERDS then you will tell who is who in our department!
We all know the problem here was the complaints and CR's and lawsuits that have overwhelmed societies opinion of us and cost the City to pay out whatever and it has screwed us into getting JODY. Well it is what it is....
I also know the City is insured against liable and there probably is a cap on the funds for when police and fire fuck up and that is why the Command is tight on us and we can't run wild getting jammed up. We need to use our heads....
Dude beefs Dude sues Dude don't do shit Dude is the enemy Dude kills Dude this Dude that...
Use our heads but JAM DUDE UP and take it back! At least in our neighborhoods...
I am sure also like anything else WE generally fuck shit up beyond repair especially if we don't use our heads today when dealing with this fucked up world we have on the streets!
This isn't a RAH RAH message but realistically we all need to try to "go with the times" here and use our heads.
I know we haven't had a raise but what happens if we get one?
I know we all hate Jody.....but what happens if we get a new Sup and he is a good one?
ARE WE GOING BACK TO WORK?
Some of you guys I doubt it and some probably have never stopped working . Hell some never did shit anyways.... Some don't give a fuck!
Fact is we bitch and moan and whine and act like everybody owes us. I think we need to prove our worth everytime out! At least that is what I preach to my kids in their sports and school work!
I for one still don't trust anyone and don't want to get jammed up but there are shitheads taking over neighborhoods like where we live because the police have become less proactive and stopped "looking into things further"
Police do not sit back on DUDE and shut him and his operations down anymore for fear of perjury or whatever. Just do it right.!
But we shouldn't stop doing it altogether or DETROIT is what we WILL become and WE have to live in it!
Sorry for the rant...
Just would like to know where this job is going and I think it is up to us to use our heads out here after we get our raisies.
Also whether or not we are EXTREMELY happy with our COMMAND staff wherever we work or just ingeneral, we just should try to make some sort of effort for the good of things in the streets and the safety of our families and co-workers out here.
In other words, we really should try to eliminate some of the shit that has festered over the last several years!
To those of you working the 10 hour days, you are lucky. Chicago is practically the only city still working 6/2 which sucks. I have had contact with small and large departments and they all love the 10 hours. Don't give me the bs about 10 hours on the west side or in Englewood, I would rather have the extra days off! Dont be resistant to change. Studies have shown that medical use increases on the 6th day along with brutality etc.
You want screwed up, go work in this busy southside district that these situations screw up and try to figure out why I STILL love this job. It's screwed up, but we have great bosses, from the Commander to the Sergeants, GREAT.
Thank you, Jody for giving us this Commander and shipping the old one out. You might be a screw up, but this is one time you did alright!
I saw a funny line in, of all places, Streetwise.
I was bored on the train and someone left it lying on the seat.
It was a play on words, taken from Dunkin Donuts tag-line, "America runs on Dunkin".
Instead it say's "America(schools)runs on(Arne)Duncan.
Obviously,in reference to his appointment as U.S. Secretary of Education and the CPS scandal involving the purchase of very expensive cappaccino machines without competitive bids.
Hey it's the chicago way!
Now I just heard on the radio that 5 CPS students (all future surgeons) have been shot inside Dunbar H.S. on the south side.. typical. These goofs have no coping skills.
It's probably because someone accidentally scuffed dude's air jordan gym shoes!
Good work chalkie!
I'm sure Daley, and Duncan won't be taking any blame. These assholes only take the credit, but when shit goes bad, they always blame others! Again..it's the chicago way!
The city will judge which schedule is better by which one shows the most increase in productivity. so whichever one is best, go out and make arrests, write tickets etc. and we get the good schedule. Than back to situation normal.
Then, when we get a 3% raise for the year, we will see it disappear when Governor Quinn doubles the Illinois State Income Tax from 3% to 6%.
That is coming so don't be too shocked. Quinn wants to double the Income tax so expect, after a fight, maybe it only goes up to 4% or 5% but be sure it IS going up.
Other states nearby have 6% state income tax already. We have to be very careful not to lose the income tax exemption for retired law enforcement officers. A raise in the state income tax will make the exemption for PO's that much more valuable.
Thank God I only have a few more years of this.
Nine hours is just about as long as I can stomach, so I think that those who are pushing 10 hours are a little off, and those who mention 12 hours need to seek professional help. STOP looking at how much time you get off with a ten hour sechedule... why would I want to suffer through 50 hours for time off?? START looking at your work experience... 4 days, then done. Time off comes real quick, real often. I just worked my second day in a row, and MY WEEK IS HALF OVER!!! So sweet....
Give the schedule change attempts a chance. At least someone is trying something.
Most of us won't admit it, but, more consecutive days off is more important than two days here, two days there. It gives those of us who work other employment a chance to work an extra day AND actually have two or more days off. More consecutive days off gets my vote...whichever schedule result in that.
8th District and 13th District 8 1/2 hr 6 -3 schedule!
WHAT I SUGGEST IS ONLY A 1/2 HR OVERLAP WITH THE WATCH CHECKING OFF AND THE ONE STARTING BUT DURING THIS TIME EACH WATCH WILL BE EITHER AT CHECK OFF OR AT ROLL CALL. WITH THIS SCHEDULE THERE WOULDNT BE A NEED FOR ANY NEW CARS OR EXTRA RADIOS. ALSO THE DESK AND LOCK-UP CAN ALSO ROTATE ON THE SAME SCHEDULE AS THE WATCH (6 ON AND 3 OFF) WITH THE SCHEDULE THAT I PROPOSE BELOW.
EARLY CARS
DAYS
06:00 HRS. TO 15:00 HRS. AND GO IN AT 14:30 HRS. FOR CHECK OFF.
AFTERNOONS
14:00 HRS. TO 23:00 HRS. AND GO IN AT 22:30 HRS. FOR CHECK OFF.
MIDNIGHTS
22:00 HRS. TO 07:00 HRS. AND GO IN AT 06:30 HRS. FOR CHECK OFF.
LATE CARS
DAYS
07:00 HRS. TO 16:00 HRS. AND GO IN AT 15:30 HRS. FOR CHECK OFF.
AFTERNOONS
15:00 HRS. TO 0000 HRS. AND GO IN AT 23:30 HRS. FOR CHECK OFF.
MIDNIGHTS
23:00 HRS TO 08:00 HRS AND GO IN AT 07:30 HRS FOR CHECK OFF.
DESK AND LOCK-UP: 1/2 HR OVERLAP WITH THE WATCHES PRIOR
DAYS - 05:30 HRS TO 14:00 HRS 1/2 HR.
AFTERNOONS - 13:30 HRS TO 22:00 HRS 1/2 HR.
MIDNIGHTS - 21:30 HRS TO 06:00 HRS 1/2 HR.
OK, without getting into the merits of one schedule over another, for the moron who never learned fractions: a 6&2 schedule (our present schedule) has 7 DOGs and means 2/7 of the watch is off each day; with a 4&2 or 6&3 schedule (see 008, 013, 014 or 018) 6 or 9 DOGs mean either 2/6 or 3/9 (reduced to 1/3, dipshit) of the watch is off each day. 1/3 is bigger than 2/7, therefore the new schedules have less people working each day. In fact on days, that's 1 or 2 cars less. You decide if that's a safety or service issue.
Forget college, maybe some people just need to complete high school.
The longer the day is, the more it will cut into your court time and OT. This really isn't about you people, it's all about the $.
1/09/2009 11:57:00 PM
Good they can keep the hours because by the time I get ready and get there I have already spent an hour and a half plus travel time back I am really going to court for free for the first 2 hours. I honestly dont like when I have court on my day off, unless it is going to trial and I am going to be there for 6 plus hours.
Second, time off with the family (i.e. 4 day weekends) to go places and do things is MUCH more important to me than a couple hour of court time on my day off.
I am perfectly happy with the 6 hour schedule I am working now. I am not over-stressed and it has taken me 25 years to figure out how to do it right now don't mess this up on me.
I get a good breakfast or coffee with roll in the morning, conversation with the neighborhood folks mid morning, a nice lunch or more conversation round noon time, a little nap in the afternoon and a redlight mover every other day and then more conversation in the afternoon before gassing up and going in. Oh, and a car wash weekly and one bus check a day.
Now don't anyone try to fuck this up, you hear? And for God sake, don't even think of giving me one of those military rifles hanging in the district! Jesus H. Christ, I turned mine in to Uncle years ago! If my six shooter can't handle it I will call fucking SWAT or the National Guard.
Now leave me alone with this schedule change bullshit, my routine is all set and I like things just as they are and don't ever want to change.
What about our pension fund? Now they are trying to give it to the widow/widowers (even if they remarry). I don't know about the rest of you, but if my old lady gets remarried, I don't want to support the new dude. If we live into our older years and she survives me, I hope she is taken care of. But imagine if my young wife (no kids), remarries some guy and my pension is their main support. I call bullshit. Also, if our pension fund is so willing to find more ways to distribute more and more often and also let Daley's clan dip in, we are in BIG TROUBLE.
1/10/2009 04:05:00 AM
The widow/widower if under the age of 55 remarries, losses the pension, over 55 gets to keep it. Or if they had been married for at least 25 years gets to keep it. Federal law.
**NOT your problem. The shortage of cars & equipment is something the DEPARTMENT will have to fix.
TO: Officers Working in Pilot Program Districts
FROM: HQ Supervisor
SUBJECT: Work Schedule Year-end Assessment
At the end of 2009, a comprehensive impact study of each of the pilot programs will be undertaken. Factors to be considered will include, but not be limited to, the pilot schedule's impact on: extension-of-tour overtime (which will likely decrease per studies from other jurisdictions), court related overtime (which will likely increase according to the experience of other jurisdictions), rate of violent crime, equipment costs (vehicles - including officer involved traffic crashes, radios, and PDTs), IOD occurrences, medical roll usage (number of occurrences as well as average duration per occurrence), discipline (rate of change in the number of CRs and SPARs initiated), officer activity (the usual - arrests, movers, parkers, dispersals, contact cards, etc.), and officer reported factors (fatigue, satisfaction, work-home balance, etc.).
As you are already aware, any decision about continuing and/or implementing one or more of the pilot schedules in additional units and/or citywide primarily depends on how it benefits the city. Officer satisfaction will be secondary - though not wholly disregarded - in this decision making process. In other words, the Department is like the vast majority of individuals in that it acts in its own self-interest.
With that said, if you prefer to keep the pilot schedule, act accordingly. Impact those areas of the year-end assessment over which you have control: arrests, parkers, movers, contact cards, dispersals, medical roll usage, reported satisfaction, and, to some extent, discipline. In other words, make it difficult for the Department to scrap the pilot schedule.
Conversely, if you do not prefer the pilot schedule, your lack of performance can help ensure its failure. This is one occasion where officers, by and large, can influence the outcome and change Department policy
God bless and stay safe.
Also whether or not we are EXTREMELY happy with our COMMAND staff wherever we work or just ingeneral, we just should try to make some sort of effort for the good of things in the streets and the safety of our families and co-workers out here.
In other words, we really should try to eliminate some of the shit that has festered over the last several years!
At best they are 30 hours in to their 50 hours before rdo... Which brings up a good point... Id rather work 36 hours and get days off as oppossed to 50 for days off. Granted, you get an extra day, but after 50 hrs, you need it.
OT but speaking of calling off chases what about the Watch Commander in 015(believe 2nd watch)shots fired at the police and by the police.Ya'll needs to terminate that chase, thank god for Deputy Rivera monitoring the air and telling them go on with it.What the Fuck kind of bosses do we have that say we can't chase when we're shot at!!!!WTF.Bad guy caught weapon recovered,believe charged with attempt murder
------------------------------
Lawfully speaking, an order to terminate the chase is unlawful. (imagine a sgt says stop this man with no PC) I would sue any supervisor that told me not to arrest a person who commits agg battery w/ handgun ( is the supervisor friends with or benifiting from the crime being commited then why call off a felony chase?). Traffic or a misdormeanor is fine, buy once someone makes an immidiate threat to society these supervisors are wrong and are so afraid they are actually lining themselves up to be sued in civil court by fellow officers and civillians for not allowing the detention of felons.
Further if I fire my weapon and a sgt LT says terminate, they are all over the paper, and in court I'm putting it on them, saying they prevented a full investigation.
Again why are coppers making any activity, so when you get shot at, they don't care, they only care about their rank and spot, and live in fear, why are they the police? God if I was in charge I would of stripped the supervisor on the spot.
To the idiot that thinks all chases are good. Read the order, . 017 cars chasing were two unmarked and no positive id the car being chased was the shooter. I was one of them and when the driver of the Cherokee drove through every intersection without even hitting the brakes and was gaining common sense prevailed, the drive was known and would eventually be caught. Thank me when you are still alive and can go home to your family and children because terminating a chase is not as easy as you think the Sgt. did the right thing. What would your explanation be when the offender hit a killed an innocent person, unless you saw him shoot you had nothing more than traffic!!!!!
Where can I apply? It sounds like the best schedule yet. CAPS is a joke where I'm at too. I've worked in every northside district and it was the same story at each one. You only see them for a few minutes a day. No supervision and no accountability. The bosses let them do what ever they want because they're useless pieces of shit too. I cannot believe someone from 018 had the nerve to post comments about housing! You are a stroke. I worked housing for years and if I ever saw an 18th district car in the greens or the row houses it was a miracle. Rarely did you guys/gals ever get out of your car to do police work even when it was in your face! Paaaaleeeeezze sucka faced fool. How about you talk about something you know about like trying to look cool rolling down Michigan ave and the lakefront scoping out girls, trying to get their phone #'s!!!!! 80% of the officers in 018 think their shit doesn't stink. Freaking self absorbed dolts.
Oh and before you make some smart ass comment, I worked lots of overtime, I worked my ass off and yes I enjoyed it. AND before you say more nonsense, those overtime slips require offender names, cb#, Rd#'s and a W/C signature. Now that I am no longer there I get to enjoy taking my hard earned comp time as often as I like. I just came off a wonderful 28 days of furlough.
Ten hour days were great but for those officers that do work in busy distict it won't be so great cause the will have to deal with shitheads for 10 and that does suck big time. Yeah its nice at first and when working day furlough comes along but it gets old. It wears you out, especially if you have a late arrest. It gives you more days off but not everything lands on your days off. Its hard putting in that slip for 10hrs off, especially when you want a baby furlough. It is stressful while you are working but I found I overall I was more rested and had more time to do stuff. I don't have kids but I can't imagine it would be easy, especially if you are a single parent. I never had time to do much of anything on the days I worked, other than work out and or go to court. Its hard even to get 8 hours of sleep. Oh and you can kiss your daily side jobs goodbye if you want to sleep or have kids.
There are pros and cons to the schedule and no it is not for everyone.
4/2 would probably work out the best as far as stress and family are concerned. At least with 4/2 we could still accumulate come comp time. Having worked both schedules, I vote 4/2.
thanks for letting me vent...sorry its so long.
The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to honoring the lives and memories of our fallen heroes. The Foundation provides support and assistance to the families of Chicago Police Officers who were killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty.
When I am giving my money all these years this is where I think it's going. Now, I hear that someone is getting it that doesn't really need it? Has the salary of that officer changed? NO. Being on the medical you still get paid. Right? You can't change the rules in the middle of the game. Do you have any idea how many coppers are struggling to make ends meet? If we take care of people who are sick and it's not duty related, the fund would be emptied out in a week. WHO DECIDED THIS? Who decided to change the rules? Why don't they help everyone? Why isn't this it's own post?
I remember those days. It was like a recording kicked in automatically.
"1821H take the domestic, 1230 N. Burling, apt. 301."
RECORDING KICKS IN
"Squad, aren't there any housing cars available?"
Isn't the H designation for Housing?
1/11/2009 08:56:00 AM
Ahh, yes, non-working policemen VOLUNTEER for an overtime spot at the greens, then promptly hideout on Rush street. You sign up for the greens, YOU get the jobs at the greens. Maybe you errantly thought you signed up for the Rush Street Steakhouse overtime initiative....
Am on day 4 of my 4 nine hour day schedule.... Let me just say that so far this is great.... also, 9 hours is about as long as I am able to patrol in a beat car- the extra hour from the 8 hour schedule makes the day noticeably, yet manageably, longer. While 9 hours is manageable, it is at the limit of my 'at work tolerance'..... I cannot imagine doing a 10 hour day for 5 days in a row in a beat car. Especially working 10-99, the 10 hour day may be unbearable...
Let me get this straight, you are technically working an 8 1/2 hour day (which is technically what your old schedule was) and you are getting another day off....Take the day off and relax, you didn't do crap the first 8 hours anyways...
Hmmm, almost 2 extra months off a year with three 4 day weekends off every 3 weeks is a bad idea. I worked the 10 hr schedule for 3 yrs in housing and the one thing I am sure about is that you are an idiot.
1/09/2009 01:23:00 AM
And I worked in 018 during this time and I can tell you that YOU NEVER WORKED A FULL 10 HOUR SHIFT! Not once! Housing never did shit to begin with, but to act like you were there for even 8 hours on the 10 hour schedule is a joke! That unit was the worst ghost payroller in the city! Guess the jokes on me though, I could have bid there and had no integrity too.
1/09/2009 08:29:00 AM
I worked it in 015th and it was the bomb - and we worked ten hours - MUSH!
Hey people if you like the schedule don't say you like it say you hate it and it sucks that way the city will make mandatory for everyone.
You are absolutely right about the above. I noticed when we do like something the city takes it away from us...and when they notice we hate it they let us really have it.
If I hear another person say "when I was in housing it was GREAT, I'll puke".That was BEFORE G.P.S. and BEFORE WEIS AND BEFORE A HUGE MANPOWER SHORTAGE.It will suck and cost tons of cops their marriages due to the stress of running their wifes around to get the kids.This was a bad idea from the get go,all we need to do is eliminate the 6th day and deal with the loss of the 2 3 day weekends.Unions in this country FOUGHT FOR THE 8 HOUR DAY FOR A REASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1/09/2009 02:39:00 PM
The 10 hour workday was not only in housing. It was actually in 015 and other districts as a pilot program back in, I belive it was 2004, correct me if I am wrong. And when it was in those districts and not in HOUSING (FYI -they got rid of the 10hr work day in housing and implemented them in districts as a pilot program in that same year)- everyone loved them. They worked a full 10 and had those 4 day weekends off. They loved it. The same once who tried back then, bid for it this time around as well. I would rather do 10 hrs than work our suck ass schedule 6 & 2. Anything is better than that terrible schedule that you say the union fought for. What the f!@# were they thinking!!!
The only difference is that 10 hour days in patrol are going to be 10 hours, not the 7-8 that you worked in housing.
1/09/2009 03:11:00 PM
Districts worked 10 hours with no ducks when it was implemented as a pilot program back in 2004 and they loved it. So there is no difference.
Mhhh, ten hour days in the summer on an afternoon rapid in 004, 005 or 006 sounds good to you? Sleeping through a ten hour tour in housing is one thing, but WORKING a ten hour day and then going to court and then doing ANOTHER ten hour day is another thing altogether. One thing I am sure about is that you never had to do 10 consecutive hours of "work" on any day you were in housing.
1/10/2009 03:11:00 PM"
i am a single parent and it works great!!! You only work 4 days a week verses 5 so I am sure you can handle it. So are you saying because you are married and have a kid we all have to say no to the 10 our workday? get a life. I am married and have a kid and believe me we managed. I actually spend 3 - 4 day weekends with my family instead of every 2 3 day weekends with them. I actually know what my kid looks like now. If you don't like the schedule, quit and find another job. But, don't go and ruin it for the rest of us who do have families and are happy for the 10 hour work day
If you enjoy showing up to work more days a week, then the 10 hour day is not for you. If you love having an extra day off and three four day weekends in a row, then 10-hour days you will like.
I have three kids and a wife. I worked the 10-hour schedule before and I loved habing the extra days off, especially on weekends. As far as I am concerned, work is miserable anyway, so why would I want to show up more frequently. I know the last two hours of a day ina beat car ar going to be miserable, but people will get used to it. It is also real easy planning weekend events with your families or side jobs.
The guys against the 10-hour day obviously are miserable and want to be away from their fat, thin-lipped, cigarette smoking, mean Irish wives and rotten punk kids as much as possible. I think I heard one of them requesting seven 5.5 hour days. That way they can be awa from home everyday.
Besides, this whole alternative hours thing is just a red herring for the City to take money out of our pockets to give the 20-somethings more time off to drink. Watch the contract.
And play with your rifles. I hope that you can buy bread with them, because there'll be a trade-off there too. Grow up.
Our union is fighting the wrong fight and our Mayor is trying to FUCK us!!
Hey , smarty pants, WE ARE COMPARING THE N E W SCHEDULES TO EACH OTHER. Everyone knows the current schedule blows, What's that blue? A clue! Look What I found!!! By working the 9 hour, 4 on 2 off schedule, it really only feels like a 36 hour week! Look at the TIME AT WORK, the time the City has our balls, stop looking at the time off....
8hr, 6 day--- 48 hours a week. In a row. Yuck
9 hr, 4 day--- 45 hours a week, 36 IN A ROW. nice
10hr, 5 day---50 hours a week, 50 in a row -worst
then 40 hours a week, 40 in a row- best
Ladies and Germs, my goal is to work as little as possible. Im not looking for time off, Im looking for less time ON. The 9 is a perfect compromise between the current, crappy schedule and the 10 hour,which is sometimes the best, sometimes theworst schedule, depending on where you are in the goofy cycle...
The 10 hour schedule gives you more time off, but you have to WORK MORE days in a row and longer days to attain, something that the City is pushing...go figure. Hell, lets just work six months on, six months off while we are at it.. look at all that time off! What a deal!
10 hours days might be ok, **IF** the hours were better.
3rd watch is 1600 - 0200 and 1700 - 0300. Terrible.
Why not 1-11 or 2-12 or 3-1?? Nobody wants to work 5pm to 3 am. Nobody.
The city gets what they want. Maximum police coverage during the late evening and early morning hours with less officers. And for all of you touting how great the 10 hour day is...wait until you have to start swiping out.
Reading your comment brought me back to those dog daze of summer many, many years ago when I'd take a long dump in the station before checking off at midnite. Now THAT was a great work ethic. If only I could have done that for ten hours....
We all know how the 6 day work week schedule works. If the city was smart, which they are not, they would cycle the pilot programs to every district for three months at a time then rotate them. This way every P.O. in the 25 districts gets a taste of the new work schedules the city is piloting. As a result, at the end of the year, everyone can give their input to which schedule is really the best. Oh yeah, I really like the 10hr shifts so far and I haven't even had a day off yet!
Hey POS for your information NYPD gets 50% after 20 years...what does CPD offer after 20 years ..oh yeah 50% but you have to wait til your 50 years old. I would take 50% at 41 years old any day of the week!!
HEY GENIUS...THIS IS FROM THE NYPD WEBSITE:
Additional Benefits
10 Paid vacation days during first & second year
13 Paid vacation days during third, fourth & fifth year
27 Paid vacation days after 5 years of service
Wow, someone is paying attention to the details. The F(L)OP certainly isn't.
The City will implement the 10 hour schedule and eliminate, through retirements and attrition, all of the 1st watch. Then they'll stagger the start times of the remaining districts to have 24hr coverage on each radio zone. J-Pud will also devise some new variation on the Total Retard Unit/Mobile Stroke Farce to provide additional reserve manpower and suck the remaining life out of patrol.
When will the "I done worked the 10 hour in housing" pukes catch up and see what's going on? Never, because they're all in units and this shit won't effect them.
