Pre-Tax vs Post-Tax

And speaking of major changes:
  • everyone check your paychecks insurance deduction is now being taken out on an after tax basis not a pre tax basis CHECK YOUR STUBS AND CALL THE UNION...
This appears to be a major change and we never heard anything about it. Anyone care to explain if this was a change in Federal tax law? A closed loophole? An effort to further confuse and confound everyone?

This is not some crazy rumor - we checked our most recent pay stub against the previous one and it's definitely altered.

Off Topic - Shaved has this posted, anybody know the story on this one?

An off-duty Chicago police Sgt. was found unconscious with head injuries in the parking lot of TR's Pub in Mt. Greenwood at 11058 S. Springfield. The officer who is unconscious with blunt trauma to the head has been unable to relate to the detectives investigating this matter if this was just an accidental slip and fall or if he was injured by another. The Sgt. is in very serious condition at a local hospital and remains unconscious.

Let's us all say a prayer for him and wish him the strength to make a recovery.

I know this is off topic, and I know this post isn't an open post, but I have something to get off my chest. It's about the color Orange. Orange has been a long time nemesis of mine, but I'm willing to let by-gones be by-gones in this new year and make a whole-hearted effort to accept the color orange for what it is. So, in the spirit of the new year, I would like a "do-over" with my relationship with Orange. So, here it goes... "Hello Orange, it's a pleasure to meet you, my name is....... ARRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!! I can't... I just can't do IT... It's not right... orange has no right being amongst us, we have to put an end to this... and to the "pro-orangers" who responded to my previous post FUCK YOU too... Does anyone have an idea of what orange represents?!?!?! Nothing good, that much I can tell you!!! Ever seen those two troll Public Defenders in Branch 50 around Halloween??? They ALWAYS DRESS in ORANGE!!! if that doesn't make you hate the color I don't know what will... I've got nothing for Orange, FUCK YOU ORANGE!!! Thinking you're all high and mighty with your bright color... makes my retinas hurt! I tried, I really did... I gave Orange a lot of thought over the holidays, but I just can't bring myself to appreciate a color that is blatently selfish... can you look at any other color when orange is around?!?! NO, do you know why? ORANGE WON'T LET YOU!!! And nothing rhymes with orange... try it... there is no word in the english language that rhymes with orange... what other color does that??? NONE!!! White - Fight, Red - Bed, Blue - Shoe, Yellow - Fellow, Orange - NOTHING!!!!! I will not rest until Orange has been abolished from our color chart!!! And to those of you who like orange and oppose my plan... you just made the list!!! FUCK YOU ORANGE!!! I swear to Jesus H. Tap-Dancing Christ that orange will no longer be welcome or accepted in this world!!!

Starting last year, you can take up to $3000 a year for what you pay for health benefits off your total income on your federal return, whether you itemize deductions or take the standard deduction. I think it applies only to active and retired law enforcement officers, but am not sure. It may account for the change as I'm not aware of any other tax changes that might do so.

Not sure how cops disability works, but for most employees you will get screwed if your disability insurance premium is paid with pretax dollars. It makes the disability benefit taxable as income. However, if the disability insurance premium is paid with post-tax dollars, the benefit is not taxable as income. As such, a benefit of 70% of income is livable if it is not subject to income tax, but if you are taxed on 70% income benefit, you only end up with about 50% of your income.

I am an accountant however, taxes are not my specialty. I was just on the IRS website last night and viewed all the new tax changes. I did not see any change in the federal tax code that would account for this. I will be checking my husband's check tonight to verify this. If true, hopefully this is just a dumb mistake by someone in payroll. If your insurance premiums are being taxed, the only way to deduct then would be on a schedule A and you would only deduct expenses above 7.5% of your AGI. This is a big problem if true!!!

Because now and in the future False Burglar Alarms will be written on an ANOV citation. This means no free alarms, the poor sucker citizens will now pay the fine from the very first false alarm!

Businesses are first, they will now get an ANOV, no free visits by police for false alarms they ALL get a fine via ANOV.

Hey, Reporters, pick this on up and write about it!

The City will now fine businesses on ALL false burglar alarms, another way to fuck the very life blood of the city: Businesses. This has not been reported on at all.

No one cares because you're an attorney.

The FDA has changed testing regulations that now prohibit the use of lab rats. The rats have been replaced by attorneys, much to the delight of researchers. When asked why, one of the researchers replied, "There are some things rats just won't do."

OT the incident at TRs was involving an off duty sgt. From rumors, again I STRESS RUMORS, he was there for a few hrs with friends and possibly was arguing with a couple of guys who are in the trades(as in plumbers, electricians, engineers etc for the slow guys here) Left the bar and was found unresponsive in the lot some time later. This sgt is in VERY CRITICAL condition and needs everyones prayers. Its too early to say what happened as no one really knows unless they were there and I was not. Im sure there may be a couple of guys who were with him that might know what happened. Im not going to blame anyone at this point but lets just hope and pray for his recovery first and foremost and for the truth to come out eventually. I highly doubt he sustained injuries like this from a fall, which from what i understand is what is being reported

You chose a bloated, too-many-mediocre-graduates profession. Boo hoo.

Pension? Doubt I'll see mine due to the corruption in this state.

Health care? For now. Because I pay a portion. But not once I retire, if the city stays the course it's charting.

Vacation? Yup

Sick days? That's called time due, which I EARNED, thank you very much. Or medical (where they seem to check on you if you're home a day or two, but they don't check the abusers.....and if you take more than a certain number of sick days in a specified time period, you get in trouble....and again, for some reason this doesn't tag certain abusers).

So. GFY. Whiner. And find yourself a profession that isn't so bloated with morons. Top law school means shit.

Your PAID UNION REP should have told you as they all go for FREE! Plus all the rep's get ALL their dues refunded every year at the REP'S Christmas Party!

Every member of every lodge has to pay that extra $.50 per month, so just pay it!

Fuckin union dues up .50c! Why does that have to go up? I guess they're just taking a page out of the da mayor's "tax em tax em tax em" book. We haven't had a raise in a long time and everything around us keeps going up. So why would our own union raise our dues in a time like this? Maybe they're just keeping up with the cost of living? Hey, FOP can you get us a raise that keeps up with the cost of living too? What does the FOP really do for us? We never hear from them until it's time to vote or when they want to sell us the BS contract they got us. We can't trust the leadership of department and now our own FOP too! I said it before, these politicians don't understand simple economics. People are mobile and can go elsewhere to purchase products and they are! You CAN NOT tax yourself into prosparity. I may have put gas in my car maybe twice in Chicago in the last year and I have never filled it up in Chicago. I try to buy anything expensive outside the city and I know may who do the same. I don't smoke, but I know many who do and always purchase the cigs outside cook county. I know 3 couples that reside in chicago that got married this summer outside cook county due to the high taxes. It's kinda sad that the politicians are that dumb and are hurting the city an county.

How much will it cost to buy-back everything he has sold to private corporations? What about his midnight raid on Meigs field? When will this guy be stopped?

A #1 - You are more than likely not the CPD. I apologize if I am wrong, but you seem to be straight out of Iowa City, Madison or some other Bullsh#t Honkey-tonk river city you were forced to inhabit as a youth. The afore-mentioned being said, are you willing to realize that you should not post sh*t about others who do 'still have an occupation, albeit one that has been stripped from its' original facade, such as ours, from a mayor who has turned a once proud occupation into something that the majority of "Patrolman" are uneasy to admit in these times. Think about this, out-of-school-no-job-attorney(wannabe esquire), many of us on this Department know quite a bit more about the law than you will ever realize, because after we set our heads on our pillows, we know we did our best, whereas you will continue to grandstand and attempt to demean a profession which allows your chicken-sh*t ass to do the same...signed a po who knows/knew many men and women who deserved to be addressed as Esq., simply because they were...

My girlfriend is a VP of Human Resources and has worked in both the public and private sectors. I asked her to weigh in on this issue of the change in pre-tax to post-tax deductions. She tells me that no change could be made during the insurance year because all insurance plans are filed with the IRS but that changes can be made every open enrollment period. If there was a change made to how our portions of the premiums are paid, then it would have been listed in our open enrollment materials. Anyone remember seeing/reading that? I didn't bother to even look at mine. She also pointed out that is more likely that new payroll file(s) for 2009 insurance premium deductions were not coded as "section 125" which means pre-tax deductions and says it's likely that will be corrected. Apparently payroll systems have to "turn that pre-tax feature on" every year. She further states that there is no benefit to a company (or our city) to take the deductions on a post-tax basis whatsoever and the only benefit is that the pre-tax deductions is to reduce the tax liability for employees. So, the city would have no reason at all to change our deductions to post-tax.

OK, before you all blast me for this post let me just tell you fellow officers that she really is an expert in this field (and has even been approached to help get our new contract ratified.

Here's a thought:

Get off your ass, go out and commit a criminal act, get yourself arrested, charged, and indicted, then hire yourself to defend you.

Charge yourself full boat.

If you win, pat ourself on the ass.

If you lose, sue yourself, and retain yourself as the lawyer representing both your plaintiff self and your defendant self.

That way, you can collect your fee whether you win or lose your civil case.

Good times lets work extra hard.

If you went to any meetings or read the newsletter you would know that the State Lodge FOP and the National Lodge FOP both raised their dues. We pay dues to those organizations also, they are included in our twice monthly deductions.

They are pass through increases, that is, the FOP Lodge 7 has no choice but to pass the increase along. Our own FOP lodge did NOT increase dues, it was State and National, complain to them. The State FOP is nearly busted and needed more of an increase than what they got.

It will go up again next year also.

I hate to stick up for the FOP, BUT, if any of you kept up with all the newsletters they send out plus the letters from the National FOP you would know that they raised the dues structure LAST summer at the NATIONAL Convention.

Your PAID UNION REP should have told you as they all go for FREE! Plus all the rep's get ALL their dues refunded every year at the REP'S Christmas Party!

Every member of every lodge has to pay that extra $.50 per month, so just pay it!

Bunch of windy bitches, READ those LETTERS!

This message provided by;
"Thank you, Come again!"

Kwik-E-Mart

Not entirely true. We do NOT get ALL dues refunded, only that portion that goes to Lodge 7.

Unit Reps are NOT paid. Their only monetary compensation is the dues refund they get in December, about $420. A year.

Want to be a Unit Rep for $420 a year and a free corned beef dinner in December? You're welcome to it. Just go to a minimum of 5 Meetings a year, most go to more. And then listen to all the crap from officers moaning about everything under the sun in the districts and units.

Run for Unit Rep, you too can have that cush job that can't be given away in most districts. Be grateful anyone will do it at all.

TO ALL: All FOP books were mailed out by the second week in December. Go blame the US Postal Service.

Go to FOP Hall for a free replacement book or see your Unit Rep.

All books were mailed, you don't believe that the honorable postal workers know what is in those FOP envelopes and take them or throw them away?

I got mine by Dec 16.
