There's more than a few of these running around at any given time, mostly sticking up illegals and drunks:
A man armed with a fake gun who impersonated a police officer has been charged after he ordered two people -- who happened to be off-duty Chicago Police officers -- out of the area early Tuesday in the Lincoln Square neighborhood on the North Side.
Juan Quintero, 25, of the 4600 block of North Monticello Avenue, was charged with impersonating a police officer, a felony, and aggravated assault for pointing a phony gun at the officers, according to police. Quintero was also charged with possession of a replica firearm, having no driver’s license and no insurance, according to a release from police News Affairs.
If he had only shown up at a District station...
And does anyone at 35th Street care to explain why IAD is calling an entire desk crew down for interviews regarding a humorous fax sent to 003 regarding their security breach? Seems a waste of hundreds of man-hours and thousands of dollars for a few laughs.

To the six unarmed odpo's involved in this case: If you are going to go ANYWHERE in this city ALWAYS carry your gun. If you are going to get stupid drunk, then stay home. He should have been shot on the spot. When you carry a gun for a living, you'd better put some effort towards being a gunfighter, and if he'd pulled this BS on a couple of gunfighters, he'd be on life support or a slab. IMHO if you have taken the time to determine if the object in the offender's hand is a fake gun or a real one, he's had time to shoot you if it was real. Don't gamble, 50/50 odds, with your life or your partners. Be a gunfighter. Be the real Police.

Fake gun did look real, Fake badge looked bad. Tickets were written because when off fled scene he got in car and drove off. Good job by both off duty and on duty police. Sad to report though investigating detective basically had to be ordered to actually work on this case because only thing he wanted to do was go back to his chair and sit until the end of his shift. Weapon, badge recovered. Great witnesses and victims. Detective did everything he could to sweep it under the rug. The only thing missing here was when detective says to off duty P.O.'s "Kid ya got nothing here." Still waiting to see if he said that

Sorry but all the witnesses were brought in... and told to go home by the Dic because he didn't want them there or on the report. Nice try to blame 019 but from where I sat (and I don't work in 019) the officers did a good job.

try not to be so quick to beat up on the officers in 019.
as anywhere else there are some real pieces of work running around... (well, not running around but hiding out in secure little corners).
there are a lot who know nothing other than 019, there are a few who actually have been in other (read "busy") places and there are a few of that number who have actually "been there, done that, brought the t-shirt and won the stuffed animal," who want to spend their last few years working for people who (for the most part) don't throw bags of shit at the police or light a pissy old couch on fire & kick it down the shaft onto the roof of the elevator car you're in after getting the "woo-woo" from dude that the po-po are on the way up...
