Jim Keeps Busy

  • Mullen was laid off in December from WBBM-TV Ch. 2, where he contributed monthly reports on disability news. But a new business project has kept him busy.

Mullen now sells applesauce made using his mother Audre's recipe. Mullen's Apple Sauce is sold in Chicago stores, including Happy Foods and Whole Foods Market.

A percentage of any profits will go to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, which relies on donations to help families of deceased or seriously injured officers.
Everything we've ever read about Officer Mullen paints him as a guy who won't even let paralysis keep him down. Keeping busy keeps him going. Good luck with the latest venture Jim.

Years ago I responded to the same apartment and floor on a Domestic where this poor guy was shot. It happened a year before I started the job, never knew the man but I realized the real danger of this job beyond what they talked about in the acadm.. I have seen PO's on there "bluetooth" during stops, stopping car loads of assholes while 99 and its surprising to me how some will not accept the true danger of this job. I don't car how tough you are, "Pookey" who weights 145lbs will pull a pistol and shoot you in the face. You can go a career without ever shooting or being shot but shit still happens, please be the FUCK careful and for some "wake" up.

GOD BLESS THIS HERO!!!

Yea and I will say this. Jim Mullen was at the benefit for Sara Martorano on sunday April 5th. The weather was shitty but here was one of our bravest coming out to support one of our own's little girl and her brave fight against cancer. For all of you coppers out there that didnt come because you were too tired and it was too cold just remember: Jim Mullen was there in his wheelchair with his wife and caretaker with a big old smile on his face to lend his support. Think about that the next time someone asks you to help out at a benefit. I was there and if you werent you should be embarrased.

Jim is an inspiration to us all. A lot of other people would have just bitched and moaned the rest of their lives feeling sorry for themselves. Jim dealt with the tragedy that happened to him and went above and beyond. He is a hero to all of us and he is what makes this department great.

Mullen's Bar and Grill is named after Officer Mullen as a tribute by a friend of his family. (There's one in Wrigleyville and one in Lisle. I owe them a shout out.)

Every year some of us out in the west burbs have a pub crawl to benefit Concerns of Police Survivors. Mullen's has been the first stop for the last few years, and they always take care of us. His picture is in the entry way, and some of us always raise a glass to a guy who refuses to be beaten. By anything.

Hmmm. I suddenly have a taste for applesauce.

Jim is a good man, and was a very good copper. I remember him from mornings sitting in Branch 29 and he was always a great guy with great pinches, and a top notch dad and husband. I hope this endeavor is a huge success. Thanks for posting this SCC, I'll be looking for this appelsauce and stocking up!

From a citizen troller: thanks for the sauce tip. You simply must have apple sauce with chops! And with bratwurst too! I think of Jim and his family often and glad to hear he gets around. He gets out in bad weather and I too was just sitting around bitching about the bad weather. Always keep your faith Jim and family.

Jim, and his fellow officers who became handicapped, should Lead our St. Judes Parade, EVERY YEAR. I for one would be MUCH more proud of them, rather than having a bunch of Exempt rump-riders at the lead spot. Put the March back downtown, and have Jimmy Mullins and Co.. lead us with pride.

Jimmy is a class act, and a true inspiration. He is a very active guy in spite of the tremendous odds he faces every minute of his life. I'll never forget him calling me up after I had some surgery, just to check on me. This guy's had dozens of surgeries, and he's worried about how I'm doing? Quite a guy, I'm honored to call him a friend. And yes, the applesauce rocks! God Bless, Jimmy!

On topic: broke down and read the Trib at lunch in my car today. And lo and behold there was Jim and wife on editorial page talking about this food product and things in general. They look great, both of them. Good luck and best wishes from a citizen reader who will always remember you.

The applesauce is indeed good my kids love it. As Jim would say try it with some ice cream. Jim is indeed a class act and his wife is indeed a special lady, she tries to help out all police that might be suffering when and while applying for disability who better to talk to then someone that’s been through it. Talking about a woman who's been by her man's side that’s indeed her, she even does more than Jim in that regard. Correction though Jim didn't get laid off from Channel 2 he had to leave because of his disability status, now the Board will not allow him to work. Its other people that are faking their disability that makes it bad for individuals like Jim and others that are really disabled. Some people go in there with back cramps and apply for disability & get it because they won’t a free ride and it hurts people like Jim and others who want to do something else with their lives. Showing everyone they tried to take me out but I’m here and still working to make this place we live in a little better.
