If they canceled the southside Irish parade after the 50 arrests, there's no way they shouldn't cancel this disaster. I can't wait to see what Humbolt Park looks like in a few weeks. And we got another e-mail saying the Polish parade up north wasn't a nice time again with Belmont Avenue shut down at one point and crime scene tape up all over. Anyone have info on that?
The fact is, these "parades" seem to be getting more and more out of control. At the Cinco de Mayo parade the fools beat each other up, at the South Side Irish parade, they beat the shit out of each other, destroyed property, pissed & shit everywhere and anywhere, and continued until the next day. That's the difference.

Regarding Cinco De Mayo Parade, I didn't hear of any such incidents on the citywide during the entire parade and cleanup. Can't speak for the festival which was ongoing weekend event.

The Mayor personally cancelled the Southside St Patrick's Day Parade to avoid any negative publicity in the future, regarding the 2016 Olympics.

Ethnic parades are for assholes, period. All of them. The only parade I will attend (unless I'm being paid overtime), is the neighborhood kid's 4th of July bike parade.
On Saturday, 01 May 09, there was the late call to the W/C at 0700 hrs. asking for P.O.'s for the Cinco parade. Yes, they fucked up, again! He pulled the only two sector cars we had violating the contracts seniority rights for a pre-planned event but they were afraid to file a grievance. Didn't matter because two cars won't prevent the daily rap.
The communities want the parades so let them have them. If the organizers felt there was a problem then they would use logic and common sense to guide them.
One group did just that, and ended a thirty year tradition for the community's best interest. What is unacceptable for one community is total acceptable to others.
If violence is acceptable, let them have parades and fests. Just start chraging the organizers for city services. My family doesn't attend these Chicago thug fests so I don't
care.

Lets see the ss irish parade is cancelled after 60 arrests for disorderly and public urination. I would think quite minor compared to the all out gang fights and such that cinco de mayo brings. I got caught in traffic near Cermak and Damen. I decided myself, my wife and daughter would enjoy the parade. As soon as the parade came to an end and the last car was driving by which happened to be a squad riding 99, a gang fight broke out. she radioed for help and we hurried to get in the car. Just for the record. The Puerto Rican Fest in Humboldt Park will go as every other year. Lots of Music, Lots of Food and families going out to enjoy themselves in the park. This is a poor area where poor people dont have the opportunity to take their families out for a good time. The parade committee cancelled the parade. Two days after the parade, a number of 022nd District personnel met with the entire committee and told them that the parade has evolved into something not appropriate for a residential neighborhood (340,000 attendeed this year, 2/3 of whom never saw any part of the parade, just roamed the neighborhood with al;l kinds of liquor looking for trouble). The hint was put to them that the safety of parade participants and attendeed could no longer be ensured, regardless of the number of police.
After a 2 and a half hour debate, the committee overwhelmingly killed the parade. I believe the final vote was 25-3 to stop it.
Im sure all the white officers will say that this event is full of bangers and fights and mayhem but what would you call the "South Side Irish Parade"

Yes, the Polish Constitution Day parade did get out of hand. There were SEVERAL criminal sexual assaults. The patients were being treated at O.L.R. hospital at Addison and Central. I have never received a Polish phone book on my front porch but I have received them in Spanish ! When I call a business, I have never been asked to press #1 for Polish, yet I receive a preprinted instruction card before voting, in every language but Polish and Chicago has the largest Polish population next to Warsaw so when you make a comment like that, you should do your research first!

I was there for the debate and vote. The committee made the call, not the mayor.
I am not a fan of the mayor. However, give the committee the credit for stepping up to the plate and admitting that the parade could no longer be responsibly done since the city was unwilling to commit the proper number of officers to the event. The mayor would never be seen as killing off an event, and would never utter any words to that effect, as it could cost him votes in an election.
