Chalkie Waxes Poetic

  • A 31-year-old man died this morning after he was shot during a struggle over guns as he tried to sell one of the weapons to another man on the Far South Side, authorities said.

The shooting, in which both men were wounded, happened about 3:15 a.m. at the buyer's apartment in the 10500 block of South Wabash Avenue, according to police.

The shooting apparently came about after the seller went to the other man's apartment to sell a handgun, according to a police summary of the incident. After the seller gave the buyer a revolver, the buyer started paying him.

The seller then took out a second handgun and a struggle began over the guns, according to police. Shots were fired, and the seller was shot in the chest, police said.

This being Daley's Chicago, we're sure that both seller and buyer were in possession of valid FOID cards, the weapon was properly registered and both parties complied with instant background checks and the like.

The fact is that a million gun laws wouldn't have made a difference to either of these mopes because criminals don't follow the rules. The only people all of Daley's gun laws and restrictions inconvenience are the law abiding citizens who aren't running around shooting each other.

How in the hell did Chalkie manage to do his bidding at 105th & Wabash and then find the energy to stop at a gas station, fill his gas can, and then make his way to 008 to ignite an aspiring gang member of the Latino persuasion?

There's simply not enough hours in the day for Chalkie to effectively manage what he does best, let alone find "quality time" to spend with family and friends.

Chalkie should (in my mind) be elevated to deity status, not to mention receive a bump-up in pay to compensate him for going above and beyond what modest and uninspired mortal killers accomplish.

If you're reading this, Chalkie, please know that we love you and that you have our full support.

Mayor Daley handed high school diplomas to nearly 30 ex-convicts Saturday, then vowed to put more former inmates in city jobs as the economy improves.

Daley -- the keynote speaker at St. Leonard's Adult High School graduation -- also said he hopes to find the money to expand the school.
---

Daley already has loads of felons in City jobs, he doesn't have to go looking for more.

Still, it's good to know Robert Sorich will have employment when he gets out of prison.

I spoke with Chalkie the other day and he thanks you all for the well-wishes and praise. He wanted me to tell you that he's just like everyone else: here to do a job. He did put together a poem - it turns out that SCC was right. Chalkie is a bit of Lord Byron.

BEING CHALKIEChalkie's my name and I'm here to say,
I wander 'round Chicago every single day.

If you're a gang-banger and you can't run,
You better get a car or a fuckin gun.

I visit those whose time has come,
I scoop them up with a little hum.

On all sides of the City I feast,
I'll go north, south, west or east.

If Chalkie had to choose which is best,
He'd have to say he likes those on the west.

The Westside is full of cowards and shit,
I stroll the streets taking animals to the pit.

Most I take are high on weed, drink or smoke,
No one misses them cause their souls are broke.

The southside is nice, in it's own special way,
A little bit of Hell on Earth, some would say.

Da PoPo love me cuz I always do it right,
Whether morning, evening, afternoon or night.

If you see me, it's already too late,
It's time to dance with your final date.

The Mayor ignores me and my retinue,
And secretly hopes my presence continues.

I do my part, without complaining,
And let others do the explaining.

Chalkie loves this City and promises to stay,
Until the Mayor decides that his police he'll pay.

It was a great day. Beautiful weather, a sea of Blue, but with that aching feeling in the pit of the stomach that comes when I think about friends lost forever. People like all of us, coming to roll call, laughing at dumb shit, eating lunch with us, taking their kids to little league, sitting on the deck having a beer, helping us cuff some jagoff. But no more. Gone, but never forgotten. Ever.

Nate, Joe and Rich. And all of the names on the wall. You are missed. And loved.

There is hope! Some young High School students in Wheaton are leading a "Right to Bear Arms" forum at Wheaton City Hall this Tuesday. It i an encouragement to see our leaders of the future stepping up and defending their right to bear arms.

Upcoming gun-rights forum with the theme, “Education is our best defense.” At: Wheaton City Hall council chambers [303 W. Wesley St.], our future student leaders/high school students who are Second Amendment supporters invite Wheaton and neighboring communities to a forum on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. “Various students will talk about their future as it relates to the right to bear arms, as well as why they are actively involved in training and education as it relates to the Second Amendment.

Their featured speaker of the evening is Dr. Paula Bratich, Second Amendment Sisters co- coordinator, Illinois Chapter. She will address concerns of women who deserve the opportunity to defend themselves.

Don Castella will update us on conceal and carry efforts in respective counties. “We invite people who would like to ask questions and discuss their supporting or opposing views. We will offer time at the end of the forum for open discussion. This forum is free. This is a clever move by organizers to demonstrate what some local high school students think about gun-control measures. The forum is being held in response to one organized last week by the League of Women Voters and the Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. That event, planned primarily for students at Wheaton North High School, prohibited the nearly 200 people who attended to challenge assertions made by presenters about the effectiveness of proposed gun-control measures.

I really feel that the current political administration is more concerned with the decent law abiding "Real Patriotic Americans" having guns, then criminals having guns. I think they know, that We Know what they are up to. They want to disarm us, before they can control us, with their Socialism.
With so many criminals using guns for violence, its easy fro them to use gun control, to take our guns away.

".....but now, frankly, I'm scared. Chalkie's seems to be visiting more and more and as an average citizen, that makes me nervous. I don't want to be taking my trash out or getting in my car one night only to have Chalkie pay me a visit. It's only just getting warm out now and it sounds like it's the wild west out there.

Have you been thinking that everything you read here is just fairy tales?

"Harry Osterman's bill would have taken care of just this type of problem.
All firearms sales would have to go thru a FFL.
This seller would definately have followed the rules.
"H" U R so smart
Those darn republicans blocked it though
The party of "no"

Uh huh, and, therefore, every person would, by default, have each and every firearm they purchased registered with the federal government, just like in Hitler's Germany, a bit before confiscations began.

Thank God for that party of 'no'.

I wish I had been investing my money in chalk futures over the years. It must be paying off now like IBM was back in the 60's and 70's ! ! !

Reporting on St. Jude would create a warm and fuzzy feeling for the police.

Shortshanks can't have that after the police embarrassed him with a no confidence vote on Jody, embarrassed him by marching on city hall and continue to embarrass him by not writing tickets or making arrests!

This is why they have to ban private sales. One should have to do the sale through a licensed gun store or dealer.

Hey 8:50,

The TRUTH will set you free!

Google these words "Michelle Obama sneakers". You'll come up with 26 stories about it. Problem is, they let it die. Palin's clothes story was relentlessly hammered home for WEEKS. Thats the beef....

However, the photos of these sneakers will fit well in a 2012 campaign ad for the opposition, preferably with a soundtrack of Barack or Biden talking about Scranton, Flint, Saginaw,Chicago,et....

CAGE officers hate doing the missions and think they are BS also. Gold Stars think they actually accomplish something. CAGE also makes more felony arrests than misdemeanor ones.

Then speak up and voice your opinion on how these are a waste of time. You utilize 50-60 P.O.'s to recover 4 of grandpa's old guns?
What a waste of manpower, money and resources.

And as far as CAGE making more felony arrests you have got to be kidding right? Don't you know that everything is electronic now and verifyable dumbass? Try 10-15% of your arrests are felonies.

And while we are at it, why is CAGE the only team in 193 that works Monday - Friday 9am-2pm? Nice! Everyone else works full time and CAGE just shows up part-time. What NO gun violence on weekends?

To the Anonymous Poster who left a comment on 5/03/2009 11:15:00 PM. I normally do not look at this site because it often reminds me of how far we have fallen as being honorable and decent towards each other on this job. There are often times too many personal attacks, race-baiting and sexual bias for my taste. To the blogger who posted these comments, please, allow me clear some things up for you.
First, I have over twenty-three years on this job. Second, I have NEVER received a merit promotion, I passed the test to be a Sergeant after 15 years on the street and in numerous units.I do not walk around around wearing ribbons and telling other people's third -party war stories. I have my own. My character and work record speaks for itself. I have worked for and with some of the finest Police Officers(Men and Women) ever. Some are still around, some are in Command positions and unfortunately, too many others have passed on.
Finally, whatever opinion you have of me or my brother , you can take your issues up with me. I am "old-school". I don't hide on websites and spread salacious lies and innuendo. If you have a problem with me, come see me. Its very easy to find me.
This job has really changed since I came on. We did not attack each other, like this. Sitting at home, alone, venting your frustrations on a keyboard, so no one else can see, what a coward you are. If you REALLY knew what being old-school means, you would take me up on my offer. I will be at 50th and Greenwood (Beat 2123) anytime you feel like talking, man to man, or woman to man. Since this is all anonymous. And this is NOT anonymous.

Yours truly,
Sergeant Kenneth Johnson.

Here's a shocker: 2320 hours on Sunday night 5/3/09 and NOTHING on either the Sun-Times or Tribune web site on St Jude.

Nothing, not even a small something.

That never happened in my memory and surely never happened when the march drew widespread attention on Michigan Ave.

Shortshanks must be laughing, he never comes anyway, and now, neither do any reporters or photographers.

St Jude is withering away right before our eyes. We are the only ones who care and the only ones who show up. We are right where shortshanks wants us, stuck in a tiny corner on the lakefront where we cannot inconvenience the Michigan Ave crowd on their way to get their Starbucks.

5/03/2009 11:23:00 PM

Nothing in either paper on Monday morning either. In many years that is a first. I can remember footage of the sea of blue all the way down Michigan Ave. Now ....nothing.

CAGE works 7am to 3pm. You may want to check the 193 files for arrests and you will see that CAGE felonies are slightly more than 10-15% of the total amount. Tell Peterson and Brown to stop asking for missions in "violence pockets." The guns come from outside those pockets, but you can't tell the gold stars that when they want to reinvent the wheel and solve all crime as we know it. CAGE only used 50-60 officers on one mission, which was a HUGE waste of resources and manpower. We never hear the CAGE team complain when they have to help other teams.
