St. Jude March

Someone started a rumor that parking would be full boat due to Pam Zekman's reports. It's not true.

And as in years past, some people are calling for a boycott.

We'll let everyone's conscience be their guide. We've voiced our objections to moving the march out of the public view for years now.

But the fact remains, we march for our dead. We don't do it for the politicians, we don't do it for the bosses, we don't do it for any other reason except that there are those of us who once walked the Thin Blue Line. And now, they can't, because they were stolen from us as surely as they were stolen from their families.

We march for those who can't march any more.

The order for our parking locations came out around two this afternoon. NICE PLANNING! It should have been attached to the original order.

Parking is free.

I honor our fallen brothers in my own way... I dont need some BS hidden "parade" on a Sunday morning that is the spring time version of a district christmas party to show me the light. Lets be honest... Most are there only because they are afraid of the backlash that would come if they did not attend. The fact that getting out of "spring inspection" as an incentive only shows that the real reason has been forgotten. This parade has become nothing short of a show between district commanders competing against each other to see who can sucker more of us to walk on their behalves! I honor our fallen every night...every day... and every hour in between... The fact that the Mayor can show up on Sunday for the fucking olympics but not for this only goes to show this is nothing more than a bosses showing... and we are simply pawns... say a prayer, go to the memorial, go to the fallen star case... but do not think for one minute by walking in this sham you have done one bit of good in honoring our fallen...

After several years of pondering this and always siding on marching. I'm starting to maybe think that our fallen Brothers and Sisters would understand if we did boycott the now off-the-beaten-path parade that we now have.

My thought would be for all of us to not show up for the parade when the brass and media are there. Then show up maybe an hour or two later and hold our own march. I know it'll never happen, but as far as things go these days, I'm just BEYOND DISGUSTED.

I wrote a post a couple days back explaining why I feel St. Jude's is the most important day of the year for the CPD. Thanks to the CPD wife who responded. Not going to repeat myself, but even if it was $20 to park, the memories that you give to the Francis, Airhart and Taylor families is well worth it. Lots of bitching on this site about how much the media and some citizens are against us, so by NOT showing up, who do you hurt? The media? Negative. You hurt every cop who does give a shit and more so the families of those who have suffered the ULTIMATE sacrifice. If anything, stop bitching here and do it for these people. Show that the CPD is proud. STAY SAFE

The sun is rising in the East, casting long shadows on the tall grey buildings. The city still slumbers from the previous nights revelry, its eerily quiet. The sun is slowly burning off the chill in the morning air, so slowly that its hardly noticeable. As the light from this life giving source penetrates places unseen since the previous day, it also falls on something new. Can it be HIM? The savior, the one from Washington?! The sunlight is absorbed by his dark untried uniform. Absorbed, by his deeply shined corfram shoes, absorbed, by his colorful ribbon, a recognition that he slaved for a year without declaring himself sick. There is a lone reflection, piercing the morning gloom. its eminating from the four heavenly icons on his majestically sculptured shoulders. He stands on his lofty perch observing his minions, confident, strong, 1% body fat. The minions are there, wanting only to be seen by him, to be acknowledged, to be perceived as being loyal, to get their name down on paper as being there so that it is a lasting history. These minions can be recognized by their reflective oak leaves, some silver and some regal gold. They refer to this yearly gathering as the "save my job parade".
ok, enough of this bullshit. You have to go to this parade because of who we are. Fuck the minions and j-fed, do it for us and the ones that came before us. For the families of those that cannot be here. You guys and gals are the greatest!!

Remember the May Day parades in Red Square at the Kremlin when the Soviet troops marched before the Politburo.

Aside from the fact that our "supreme dictator" never attends, compare and discuss amongst yourselves.

Of all places, Chicago has hidden political agendas within hidden agendas just like those Russian dolls that fit inside each other.

There are respectful ways to privately honor our fallen heroes with prayers and visits.

Hey 12:31 and anyone else who has similar thoughts, why don’t you come, just this year and ask the families of any of the departed if it means more to them that you sacrifice a little bit of a Sunday morning for them or if you “honor them in your own way”

All of you that try to justify not attending for ANY reason are full of shit and should be ashamed of yourselves. St. Jude has always been about one thing, honoring those who gave their lives doing this job so many of us claim to hate. If you hate it so much, leave but don’t disparage the memory of the deceased and don’t try saying the disrespect you show for them and their families is anything but that.

The March is our tradition, not anyone elses; bosses count it as inspection as thanks not as a bribe... if they didnt do it some word bitch about that too.

The fact is what those of us with over 25 yrs have been saying for the past ten...what happened to this being a Band of Brothers... in that past years we have seen the generational changes in the department .... mre and more its All About Me....

But still, it SHOULD be front and center because the public should also be given the opportunity to take a few minutes to honor those who lost their lives protecting the citizens of Chicago.

Over the years I have watched scumbags with big mouths demand and march and utilize the media for their own purposes that have NOTHING to do with decency, common sense or dignity. The march is a microcosm of this pattern. It has been moved aside, brushed under the rug just like everything else that has honor or value. Because those in power, those that are getting something for nothing, and those that are out for themselves do not want to be reminded that they are what they are, useless parasites who live in their own little universe while we pay for it all.

Those that support all should come first, be first and get first.

My husband is going and bringing our kids, if they have to pay then we will just risk getting a ticket seeing as how I do not believe the TMA's with ticket books work on Sundays but I could be wrong. Another troublesome thing is that I have had officers tell me that they are going but they say they are going so they don't have to go to inspection. That is the WRONG reason to go. So basically you are marching on the dead so you don't have to bother yourself and be scrutinized during a more formal inspection? That is wrong. I hope when people march they think of only the dead and not the fact that they are pleasing their commanders etc.

I'm not trying to pat myself on the back, but if we are to make any sort of headway, we MUST show some type of united front. If we don't hang together, they'll most certainly hang us seperately.

There is NO reason for officers NOT to go to St Jude's...with the exception of a family emergency or sickness...these officers gave their lives for this job and their fellow officers. To the officers who say "boycott St Jude" and tell others on this forum "Don't go to St Jude beacuse of the brass and media" etc...You're really lost in your idea of what St Jude is all about.St Jude is OUR day for all of the officers living and deceased...for us,the officers who go out every day and risk their lives and take that chance of never comming back home to hug their loved ones...their children...their wives. NOT for their Commander(s) or the Superintendent / Mayor etc....This is for US...the ONLY day we have to come together as a law enforcement family and show our unity and dedication to our fallen brothers/sisters...NOT for your Commanders...To the officers who continuously say "Don't go to St Jude's" ...many of you probably never went or are too lazy to get up in the morning and march for that grueling 15 minutes...I know it would really take a lot out of your days...Think of the officers who would love to be there to march and can't because they are dead...If that doesn't change your mind then you should find another job..Think of their children and look at their faces as you march by...look at their tears and awe struck faces as they see the thousands of officers marching by...that is priceless...But....I know..."Don't go to St Jude's" beacuse you wouldn't want to make those people happy....you just don't want to get out of bed...God Bless and Please Be Safe...See you at St Jude's!!

This is also a great family evevnt. Lots of wifes walking with the kids. Its really shows that we are truley one big family. I plan to do this every year. I ran for all the officers who died doing what we do. the only thing that made it bad was the on duty po who was stockpiling every free thing he could. His arms were full and overflowing. Just typical to disgrace an event and always someone to ruin it.

Ok and a big Fuck You If you dont think that the real reason for 90% is to skip spring inspection. (Hair Gel has effected the brain) I'd honor the fallen and help a their family anyway I can with the exception of spending an once of energy that even remotely appears to show respect for Jody, who has no buisness wearing the uniform, and his band of meirt. It equates to the president bowing to Saudi Arabia and shaking hands with dictators and terrorists while apologizing for my country being the greatest nation ever forged by people who faught and died to make/keep us free from the bondages and tyranny of the evil that others would impose on the U.S if they could.
and before you let me have it.....
Jody, I have a member of my family's star retired in that case on the first floor of the builing you occupy. You insult me and the memory of him to even own the uniform let alone wear it. You wearing my uniform could only be eclipsed by O'bama donning a Marine's uniform.
I dont begrudge anyone who sincerely makes the choice to go and honor our dead. But to the guy who says fuck you....You have no right to begrudge me in my choice not to march.
We need to reach out to the families and have an alternative that does not include Jody, with an invite only by the membership to the brass that we respect.

You are a two bit phoney who ought to be ashamed of yourself. You don't want to march, fine, but don't try to make excuses for your lack of self respect and pride in who we are and what we do. I could care less if the mayor is there. I hope he DOESN'T show. We are not marching for him, we are marching for the Officers and their families that were taken from us. I have to wonder what happened to you to make you as jaded as you are.

I was at the Run to Remember today. I saw coppers from all over the country there. THEY have more self respect and respect for the dead than you apparently do. Do yourself and the rest of us a favor. Sign a PAR form and quit. We don't want nor need your kind here.

We honor our deceased, especially those who made the Ultimate Sacrifice.
I'm quite sure that there's not one person who has not lost a loved one or a family member.
We ARE a FAMILY!
No one can take or bargain that away from us.
We all share the frustrations that some members have cited on this blog.
But not honoring our FAMILY certainly is not the way to air these frustrations.
Join our extended CPD FAMILY and march with your head held high knowing that you are a part of the greatest fraternity on earth!

This march isn't for police officers, alive or dead. Or their families. It's about the bosses. It's become irrelevant. Want to do something thoughful? Send a few bucks to the police chaplains, not the memorial park. Feed the families of deceased POs, not Phat Phil. It was over when they moved it off Michigan Avenue where average citizens had a chance of seeing us and asking what it was all about to a virtually hidden location that only serves to further attempt to justify that money pit of a park that no one goes to anyway. Get your heads on straight people, the march is over.

If the bosses would just shut up and not make threats, we would all go on our own. The bosses are what ruin St. Jude by forcing someone to carry the flag or by forcing someone to buy a ticket to the after luncheon,

There is no doubt that we each believe in what St. Jude's Day means. We just want to feel like we are going because was our own decision to go and not because we were forced to go and NOT because it makes some goof never-been-the-police boss look good.

But the bosses took that away from us and can't learn to just shut the F up and leave it alone. If they did, they would be impressed to see the biggest turn out of all time.

Notice how big the march at city hall was - we did that on our own without the bosses.

Boss, its my day off, you are not the boss of me on my day off, so don't boss me around on that one day please. St. Jude has nothing to do with you, so stop making it revolve around you.

In fact, a tip for next year is do not make us march together with our unit. Let all you exempt march togther as a whole, and let the rest of us march together with the officers and family that we want to march with. It can still be organized and professional, but it will be a St Jude Day marched with a true and honorable feeling.

ST.JUDE PARADE MEANS WELL BUT USLESS FOR THE FAMILY MEMBERS OF THE DEAD. HAVE A LARGE BENEFIT EVERY YEAR AND GIVE THE FAMILY THE PROCEEDS OF THE EVENT. YOU WILL GET A LARGER TURN OUT AND THE MONEY WOULD HELP THE FAMLIES. THE DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO GET RID OF THIS PREHISTORIC EVENT THAT I TALK MYSELF INTO GOING EVERY YEAR. GET THESE FAMILIES CASH OVER A WALK, I'M SURE THE DEAD WOULD RATHER HAVE IT THIS WAY TOO.

This walk needs to end and a new way of celebrating the lives of our falling officers needs to start. Why pay $20 bucks to DALEY'S coffer for parking, when you could donate the $20 to the families memebers of the fallen officers. I don't think St. Jude should end, just change to where the families of the falling officers would benefit more. Like a once a year hold a St. Jude event at McCormick Place. All the money made would go towards the famlies of the fallen officers, which they could use as they see fit, like their kids schooling or a house note. That's what these famlilies really need. I know if I were killed in the line of duty, I would much rather have money rasied for my family then some walk that does nothing.

I wouldnt care how much it is to park. Its for the right reasons to attend, not to get out of an inspection or show that your boss has his people there. Some of us know the reason. The old timer who taught the now old timers what the true reason is. Just wish the younger people on this job could learn the real reason instead of crying all the time about whats in it for me. Pay your respects for our fallen officers.Go home and give your love ones a hug, appreciate what God has given you.Stay safe my Brothers and Sisters in blue

I'm not a cop, just a cop's girlfriend but the arguement I see going on here about whether or not to go attend the St. Jude's parade saddens me. This march IS to honor the fallen and I'm sure if your family was touched in that way, you'd want your fellow officers to march.

To those who want to view this as an anti-JFed issue or an anti-Daley issue, turn your thinking around just long enough to view this as an opportunity to show Jfed that he HASN'T broken the department, that you all still believe in the CPD and still stand up for it. Look at this as an opportunity to show Daley that despite not having a contract, despite his bringing in an outside to lead, despite it all THE CPD STICKS TOGETHER AND STANDS UP TOGETHER!

PLEASE STOP! You re bickering over this issue of who will go or won't go to St. Judes demeans all of us. Each sworn member must soul search and then decide how he or she feels they can best honor our fallen heroes...but this blog would better serve us and them by only entries of good rememberances of those that gave their lives and what positive way you honor them. God bless them and their families. And as for me I will go to the Police Wall in Washington to leave flowers and prayers for their loved ones, but to each officer do what you think is best...but save the obscene remarks for any other thread. Respect for those who died hard doing real police work. 27years ago came on with Don Marquez, I ll never forget his life or death, sooner or later you will lose a pal on this job; we need to be good to each other about this one issue...everything else is fair game. sorry so long.

I know all the bullshit about moving it out of the way and hiding it where they did. I haven't missed a parade since 1995 but, due to moving last summer, I will not be able to attend (was not able to get furlough approved for this month). Please, please PLEASE go out and march for our fallen who cannot. Too late for this year, but next year: FOP get a parade permit for the fucking loop in the middle of the day. Why the fuck are the police being "hidden" away like this on a Sunday morning, not even Michigan Avenue anymore.

Shirtshanks pushed us off Michigan Ave. That miserable cocksucker wanted us away from Michigan Ave and he damn well did it. Too many complaints from his big donors who couldn't cross Michigan Ave when they wanted.

Fuck Daley. I am not fighting to get up early to get there at 0700 to march a half block in a circle and we are the only ones who notice.

Fuck that.

When it was on Michigan Ave we were quite an awe inspiring site, thousands of Police Officers lined up from Chicago Ave to the river. Now it is a fucking joke, march a few dozen feet on the lakefront in back of Soldier Field, no member of the public can see us.

It is a joke, I know honor the dead etc. Why doesn't our jagoff mayor honor the dead officers? Put it back on Michigan Ave where is belongs, on the city's front door step, not hidden away.

I won't go, that is not honoring our fallen, don't bother to flame. I honor my friends who are no longer here in my own way. That way is no one's business.

The march as constituted is a joke. This department is going down the drain quickly. Just a few more years for me.

EXACTLY, it's about those who lay in the street bleeding to death in their partner's arms. It's about that hot car chase that went silent only to find twisted metal and lifeless bodies. ONE FINAL TIME...
RUMORS
Let us dispel some rumors that get embellished about St. Jude so that you can make an educated decision regarding your attendance.
Mayor Daley won't be there. He came up with an excuse years back that Sundays are HIS day to spend with his family. We don't march for the mayor... we march for OUR fallen.
The REAL reason that the parade was moved to the Memorial site was because the "Gold Star Families" asked then Supt. Cline to change the location to highlight and honor their memorial. . He merely honored their request. This march IS about them.
Parking is free. That first year it was messed up with a backlog which caused a late step-off but it has gotten better. Get there early and meet and greet some of your old, seldom seen friends. Life is short.
How often have you said after someone is gone... "I only 'wish' I would have?"
Don't confuse/compare S.J with S.J (St. Jude with Supt. J-Fed)
If you want to reaffirm the REAL reason why were there, then please read the below post that follows from someone that knows.
Stay Safe my brothers...The O'V (r)

I go to the Memorial a couple of times a year and pray for the brave men and women that gave their lives for the citizens of the City of Chicago. I do not need to attend a parade once a year to stay in good with my boss, circumvent uniform inspection, or to help give bragging rights to a clouted exempt so he/she can brag about the number of their people that showed.

All of you commenting how messed up it is to feel the way I do, you just do not get it. mayor rmd (small case in honor of his stature) does not feel the need to be there. he is telling you exactly how he feels about us. do you think any of our honored would want you to be like sheep and fall in line for a phony parade on a day and time picked by the Department and the city after the way we are being treated? Hell no! They would say, stand strong, send a message, let rmd and j-fed know just how poorly they are treating us and continue to treat us.

I offer two solutions: 1) rmd is mayor for life. It is sad to say, but in this messed up system, it is true. So have FOP lobby to have the parade changed to a Saturday. Then let's see if he shows. There are other parades downtown on days other than Sundays. Why does our parade have to be on a Sunday, the mayor's designated day of r & r? Or 2) Have FOP call an alternate St. Jude Parade date. How about a week earlier or a week later than the city's date? You will not get credit for uniform inspection or stay in good with your boss if you attend, but you would have your self-respect and you would truly be making an effort to honor the fallen. It will show everyone how many people really show to honor the dead and how many show for motive(s) other than honoring our dead.

Those are 2 solutions to this long-standing disagreement about showing or not showing, but without one of them being implemented, I will not show as long as rmd is mayor and as long as j-fed is in the top job. I will continue to honor the brave men and women that have given so much in my own way.

Shame on the people who are not going, because it's not about Daley or Weis or anyone below and beyond. Yeah it's early and yeah it's off to the side I personally believe that our fallen officers should be honored in a parade downtown where everyone can see but instead i it's at a beautiful park. It's a park where I have family written on those walls and am honored to be apart of this event. Just like the candle light vigil its an wonderful thing the CPD does.

While I first thought moving the march to the Museum Campus was a bad thing, I think it was a good thing. 3 straight years with perfect weather. Tears came to my eyes when I saw you all marching in solidarity, hearing the drums & pipes and most of all seeing the park. What a beautiful spot to honor your fallen. A hymn went thru my mind as I stood before that beautiful memorial wall. "Softly & tenderly Jesus is calling...calling for you and for me. See on the portals he's waiting and watching...watching for you and for me. Come home. Come home. He who are weary come home. Honestly, tenderly Jesus is calling...calling oh sinner come home".

I would like to personally thank those that turned out for St. Jude. We are a total class act. Let us remind the Superintendent that we do not come out for him nor our Commanders, we come out for OUR fallen sisters and brothers in blue.

I am normally pretty to myself regarding CPD issues, but today as I watched with my team the Assistant Superintendent Beatrice Cuello speaking and basically coordinating the program for St. Jude, I got sick to my stomach.

What does she have to do with St Jude. We have a St Jude league and plenty of officers from PO's on up who have been members, supporting the cause and working their ass off to raise money, show support and pass the word. That is once again a slap in our faces. All she can say is, if that, that she purchased a sticker! Superintendent, I have tried to be supportive and find some good in the many many stupid things you have done over the past year and few months, but every chance you get you tell us to go fuck ourselves and remind us of the IDIOT you are!

No other Superintendent in the history of CPD would allow the things you do and would especially keep shoving the most sorry excuse for an exempt, Beatrice Cuello in our face!

There is no way these bosses can compete for attendance. Give it up! Even if you think it is a shame. March, think about the Fallen Officers, and honor them. Don't make excuse because you don't want to be inconvienced. Although I didn't like the march being moved. More and more people and familes are coming to view the march. It also gives people who normally don't go to visit the Memorial Park a chance to do so. If in your mind you put the Officers first, you yourself will prevail. God bless those that marched, and God Bless those that didn't.We have fallen apart, and we need to fix this ourselves. No one else is going to help us.

This morning I went to the luncheon that I haven't been to in years. A GOLDSTAR son, PJ came up to me, I also worked with his father and gave me the biggest hug.

You know what? You're full of shit! What is it that you do "every hour in between" to honor our fallen? You fucking hack! I don't go out there to avoid inspection or for the commanders. I go out there because I've got friends who never went home to their families. So if you don't want to go because you think you're some kind of tough guy renegade then stay the fuck home. No one wants assholes around anyway. How would it look from the viewing stand for the children of those men and women that have died to be standing there and have no one walk past? I couldn't even begin to imagine their pain they've gone through. Why would I dishonor their loved one by laying at home in bed because I'm too lazy or some renegade like you? Imagine if none of us went. How would their loved ones feel to stand their alone? You're an asshole and I hope someday you realize that.

"What gives in the 012th District, the female Lts. and Sergeants are too good or too important to attend St. Jude."

What about the Lt. from 012 that's detailed to News Affairs wasn't she in attendance??

I remember the days when we got three (3) hours on the books to march.

Hey J-Fraud = brings the three hours back and you will have the greatest showing EVER of any superintendent EVER!

5/02/2009 08:26:00 AM

You my friend, are an asshole!!

If that's all St Jude is to you, stay home and leave the job.

If your career had taken a "sudden turn" under WEISel/Masters/Hamilton, would YOU want to see those assholes on your day off? Maybe that's why Skahill opted to sit this one out (if she did, can't say).
Can't say I would blame her at all.
Skahill is NOT a hater, she has done a lot to help out lower ranking exempts who have had initial difficulties early in their commands.

Everyone should wear the blues including specialized units. We came out the academy in blues we should honor our fallen men and women in blues.
Many failed to take pride in their apperance and it looked sloppy.

You know whats a fuckn shame. We (Chicago) are the biggest city and department in this state but we have the lowest amount of coppers that attend the Springfield Memorial every year. Pretty fucking embarassing if you ask me. If you go for the day before festivities and then the actual memorial the next day, you only have to sacrifice about 28 hours of your time including travel time. If you go only for the memorial itself you might have to sacrifice about 12 hours including travel time. I go every year and I shake my head each and every year. Out of the thousands of coppers I know or know who they are but aren't tight with on a personal level, only 6 are going this year. Don't worry, little ole me will go down there and represent and honor our 3 fallen brothers this year. You can stay home and sleep in and watch Oprah and maybe play a video game or two. Damn shame!

I remember that too, but that was the pre-contract days. So that was WAS JUST 3 HOURS, not 3 hours ca$h.

So the fact we were NOT being paid for this is a bigger sign of solidarity.

I was at the Run to Remember on Saturday with my three kids and friends.

It was a wonderful event and a testament to the strength and importance of family. Brothers and sisters (& families) from around the country came to show their support for our 533 fallen and to remind folks that cops don't just die on TV.

Kudos to the CPD Memorial Fund, the Run organizers and volunteers (including the Girl Scouts!! thanks for the kids section)....oh all the volunteers. THANK YOU.

And to the families of fallen officers, we salute you and hold you in our hearts.

I commented before and then asked SCC not to post because I did not want to get into some bullshit about female bosses in 012. However one of the female bosses you are beefing did not attend was not there because she is at the Teamsters Hall every year along with a crew of about 15 other 012th District coppers that are the group that puts on the breakfast. Every year a group gets together and goes out and hustles all the food and drinks and then gets it all to the hall and sets it up doing all the cooking ,cleaning and heavy lifting. This year due to the economy and manpower it was not as big but all the bosses put in some cash and purchased everything you guys were eating and taking home. Alot of stuff was sent to the station for those who were working and could not make the march. You want to complain fine. But at least know what you are talking about. Actually if you had really been at the march and gone to the breakfast you would have seen this.

that never received a merit promotion

Cmdr 012 & 008

5/03/2009 05:51:00 AM

Zero! Zilch! Nada! Even the guy from 8 got into units and made capt., commander via the merit selection. No test to get out of patrol nor is there a test anymore for capt; and of course, all exempts are appointed.

God Dam each of the carpetbagging FeeBees on the reviewing stand who had the nerve to wear our proud "blues." In particular that scarecrow looking skinny punk ass Brust. The little prick couldn't be of any use at a disturbance at a day care center. How in Gods name did J-Fraud pick this little goofy prick to be a Deputy Superintendent.

---not a cop

5/02/2009 09:31:00 AM

Amen Brother!! Bring it back to Michigan Ave. were we could show the scumbags who and what we are. To be hidden away out of sight is just another slap in our faces from this corrupt city's leadership. Shortshanks wants no part of us because he could'nt stand being in the presence of real men. He needs the likes of Volpe, Masters and other vetically challenged midgets like himself around so he can feel important.

012 is great, don't read into he nonsense on here. Their are great Capts, Lts. and Sgts there, the Commander is a class act also. The problem is the 2-3 year wonders who don't appreciate what they have because they've never worked anywhere else and have no clue, but love to piss and moan if they get more than 3 jobs a night because it cuts into watching dvds and hanging at the Academy all night......

The Parade is not about the mayor
The Parade is not about the Supt.
The Parade is not about your Cmndr.
The Parade is not about getting out of inspection.
If you want to make stupid excuses why you are not going, chances are you are an idiot and shouldnt be there anyway.Do everyone a favor and save your big mouth bullshit for another place and time.
