Dear Diary...
As stated before, meet your new best friend:
Document, document, document.
Because the Department is, and guess what? You aren't the ones filling in the boxes. Arrests will be pulled from CLEAR. TRR's? CLEAR. CR's? IAD and CLEAR. Tickets? Hand entered by ticket clerks and lord knows who else. Medical days? CLEAR.
But those are just numbers. You really want to keep track of days you generated six or more RD numbers, had five domestics, the backlog started at 7 am and when you came out of roll call, two high school went up and you have four dope jobs waiting because the tact teams were all detailed out of the District for a parade again. Get a date planner if you need the extra boxes.
That way, when someone wants you to justify why you didn't do anything on 14 May 09, you can say, "Backlog, paper, car broke down, paper, paper, paper, code 4x, lunch denied, paper, and dude got shot at quitting time." Because playing around in this "rating" system doesn't show any tracking numbers for days like that. And summer is around the corner.

I learned years ago to keep copies of to/froms. Just throw em in a box. You never know when one of those might save your ass when a boss is trying to jam you.
Some of us in units have been keeping a personal humper for years. Its a real pain in the butt. Its hard to remember what I did an hour ago let alone all day. But, it has always come through for me when I needed it.
Isn't there a way that patrol can obtain a print out of your job assignments at the end of your tour?
Add to the above: Beat you were assigned to, outside number of car(s) used, partner (name and star), even though we know the A & A sheets are never wrong. I have recommended this to young P.O.s and Detectives for years. If the IRS will acknowledge a consistently filled out diary/log for expenses and whatnot then any court in the land should do the same. It has saved more than one P.O. over the years.
From personal experience, I could elaborate at length on this sound advice from SCC.
Suffice to say, SCC really has got his/her/their shit together.
I will also add that in the unlikely event that the city is stupid enough to attempt retaliation against SCC for exercising FIRST AMENDMENT rights on matters of public concern, count me in for a four-figure cash contribution to SCC's Section 1983 lawsuit in federal court.
My G*D; is it worth it anymore?
Excellent idea on the diary. Back in the 1990's, a veteran copper named Pat H. worked midnights in the 12th District. He was denied a step raise because the watch commander didn't like him and kept his rating low. The clout-connected watch commander was Pat Clark (Jeannie Clark's husband). Pat didn't write tickets-he worked the wagon and hauled dead bodies, arrestees and mental health transports all night. To me, that's a lot more work than writing tickets.
I'm still waiting to individually rate J-fed. 160 members was an insignificant number. FOP, where are the ballots. Let's go! No confidence vote here.
Have all those who read your site vote on that survey. It is done by UIC and you know that if everyone tells the surveytakers how we really feel it will get to this high ranking wannabe-the-police bosses.
SCC it is worth making it a thread.
RUMOR HAS IT ACTOR GARY SINISE (LR DAN MAN) PRO POLICE AND PRO MILITARY, MIGHT BE RUNNING FOR GOP PRESIDENT IN 2012. GO GARY
FOP should we rufuse to sign?
WHO THE F CARES SO IM NOT EGTTING PROMOTED ANYWAYS SO STICK IT!!
SGT WANNABE RAY HAMILTON IS BEHIND THIS
A good idea but not to justify your exsistence to some asshole supervisor (is that a demerit?) but for your lawyer.
..and you can use your personal log as the basis for a book about the job when you retire!
Im going to start doing this. Our district goes into a backlog at 8am. All 2nd watch cars 99,,NEVER any rapids. Lunch???? whats that?? Domestic, domestic, person shot, domestic, domestic, person stabbed, domestic, etc etc...Why bother pulling anyone over for traffic?? It WILL be a TVB.. so then YOU are the tool for doing traffic when the district is up for grabs.. I would rather ASSIST my fellow officers-since thee ae only a few of us left in patrol anymore than bring revenue in for Daley!
Ive been doing it for years thanks to a certain jagoff retired captain. JM
Nobody will fuck with you once you pull out your ledger! DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!
Dear Penthouse, I never thought this could happen to me...
Seriously! Is this bizzaro-world?!
This is TRULY a GREAT IDEA! All coppers should do this and show exactly what goes on here. Glad I no longer work south, the 24 hr backlogs and literally 32-35 jobs a night got old. Now I atually cant comoplain too much, SLOW is good
WOW - Your tin foil hat is slipping!
19B 19B 19B 19B 19B 19B...wow i just did the same amount of work some hammer head did in the ghetto.
any truth to the rumor of a point break sequel in the works?
Thanks SCC just bought ny notebook and will put it on paper!
Here, here. Don't be fooled by the color codes either. If you read the codes you'll notice red means BAD. Green means you are OUTPERFORMING. And Yellow means you are RIGHT WHERE YOU BELONG OFFICE. Nice trick guys using the same colors as a stop light as reference points. Have to hand it to whoever changing yellow to mean good when we all know instinctively yellow to mean caution. Wow!
(OT) Listened to mancow today, chuck the snake goudie was on with his upcoming iteam report about all the cta employees parking illegally with placards downtown! Another hit at least it is not us for a change!
didnt we have loggs which documented all that? Everyone cheered when Mauer, Retired said dont have to em anymore
let' just all take a breath from this evaluation crap. we had it before, we all know it sucked, but the most important thing for most people was they got their raise an they were able to work second employment. I never saw anyone really get hurt under the old program. it was a messed up system like so and so got a 95, we have to bring the average down because if we average at 95 then we should have no crime then so and so has to go to 90 and so and so has to go to 85. so yes it was a bunch of bullcrap. if someone wanted to move somewhere or wanted to get on tact then they did a lot of work and it was noticed.
scc has a point about documentation. carry a book or take one of the logs the sgts carry every day and write your assignments and the times down, there is also a nice chunk of space for comments. put event #s down in case you need to remember a certain job. if you came from a distance to handle a job, mark that down. assisting on a traffic stop, talking to a citizen, giving directions, premise checks, patroling the deployment area, patroling the area of a recent shooting in order to develop information re offenders involved, having to go in for ticket book, station assignments, probelms with the computers, trying to find a printer that works, waiting for the wc to approve the case report, waiting for the inv to get approved, talking to caps officers in order to get a senior help, trying to find a freakin beat tag, going to the area to get one, gas, flat tires, computers crashing, aira checks out, aira crashes, looking up general orders, training bulletins, listening to streaming video for refreshers with your sgt permission.... you get the drift. keep a file folder in your locker and put the copy in there, no big deal. we have a lot of stuff that we are dealing with not only on the street but in house. don't let this new system make you crazy. don't think about it just fill out the humper and be thorough and keep it, dont think about it again. we go on jobs that take ahwile, write a couple parkers, volunteer for missions once in a blue moon and write a mover. the most important thing most of the supervisors talk about or used to talk about during the round tables under the old system was, " well joe hasnt written anything, what the hell is he doing out there? and someone else would say well joe always rides on assist calls, is constantly touring areas for offenders cause i see him out there, every time i need him for something he will help graciously, and he writes terrific paper and doesnt blow off jobs. when other people are down he is the one out there handling the other calls, so he is working. and you would be surprised to know that many many sgts said the same thing about people like that. not all sgts are out there to hurt, you know that. i havent taken the training but from what i heard the officers will have access to these folders any time through the computer. if there is something negative on there that you deserve, then you deserve it and try to make up for it. if there is something you dont deserve, get the courage and approach the supervisor in a courteous way and ask to speak to him or her and get their reasoning. if you still don't understand where he is coming from then put it in his lap and ask well sgt, how would you have handled it so i will remember that in the future. im not talking about kissing ass, im talking about human relations. just take a breath, keep a log and stay safe.
"The Department did away with its rating system six years ago.....". So, what the article is saying is that for the last six years the epartment has been in violation of City Ordinance? I do believe that ordinance states that we have to be rated annually.
ALERT SCC.
Just contacted by a friend of mine. FOX News Is ambushing coppers at their residence.
They made entry into a secure condo building and got access to the coppers door. Copper answers the door and gets a microphone and camera shoved in his face. The start of the question was all that was received before he shut the door. "What do you think the citizens of Chicago....."? Thinking maybe the good media finally got their hands on the list of cops with CR'S. You know... the one that our "leader" so fiercely defended prior to its release to the court.
For about a decade now I've used some great software and a Palm TX PDA I bought on Ebay to keep track of stuff I need to keep track of and then retrieve it from the PDA days, months and years later using certain search "tags" and color highlights.
I'm not a cop but I imagine this stuff can really be useful in keeping track of and quickly retrieving the information outlined in this blog post.
Palm TX is a little spendy for an unopened one but worth the investment. Used ones are cheaper.

In furtherance of a recent post, if you have the time I suggest reading this appellate decision regarding ticket quotas.
http://pacer.ca4.uscourts.gov/opinion.pdf/011718.U.pdf
On it's face, the officer involved lost his appeal. The problem with his appeal is that he has not proven any damage to himself by his employer. He merely asserts that he was harmed in that he was caused "undue pressure to perform" and was "criticized by his superiors", which was not considered as "damage" by the appellate court.
Where Daley will lose with this same argument, is that by preventing an employee from monetary gain, "property", because that employee did not perform to the employer's satisfaction has been roundly observed as DAMAGE. Firing that employee is ALSO considered DAMAGE.
To prevent someone from making a living or augmenting their living to pay their bills because that person does not perform to someone elses satisfaction is undisputably, DAMAGE.
So, let's try this again Daley, and next time, consider the economic loss that the citizens of Chicago will have to pay when they have to foot the bill for your "activity quota".
Idiot
Do your job!

Hell, just use the humper activity sheets from a few years back...I've been filling those out everyday since the 35th street brain trust announced this new evaluation system last year...hell, I even store 'em in my good old CAPS bag...together we can!
OFF TOPIC--- Just want to say THANK YOU to the 22nd Dist tact team.... saw them on a Tstop today around 103rd and Albany... thank you so much!!! The neighborhood is experiencing its share of problems already this summer, so thanks for being pro-active on the (formerly) slow side of western....
One thing I noticed was that there has been a lot of talk about preserving certain items such as memos, day notes, etc.
A small $50 scanner for your PC is a pretty handy tool. This way you can scan the docs you want to keep, and every now and then back them up to a little usb drive you can keep offsite like at a safe deposit box.
That way besides the box full junk in the basement, you also have a digital copy in two places. Its easier to search for things when you let the PC do the walking.
All PO's reading this: Be safe !
--Not a cop but not that not a cop--
What i did on my summer vacation....
GOUDIE...That's an ancient Scottish word for annally retentive or asshole.
His latest expose is CTA vehicles, marked, with "M" plates are parked at CHICAGO (or who's are they) PARKING METERS, without paying. They are friggin' parking meters, I supppose they should pay them and submit expense account chits.
The bus stops, handicap zone, fire-hydrants, yeah, that's another story, but "M" plates at parking meters.
Stay safe, and watchout for someone looking at squad cars parking, even at stations.
They can kiss my ass with their Tracking/Quota system!
KMA
This city should settle our, 2 years expired Police contract then this silly system would NOT be necessary!
This is the biggest problem this department has!
Low Morale = No Contract
Get a clue J-Fed and company!
residents of 22nd dist west of western call 911 on every suspicious person, esp, libs!
I too have learned that years ago. so who has the last laugh. i have also been tape recording everything that i ever heard and by whom 10 plus years. this way when and if a boss should forget what he or she told me i can reflect.
OT: Congrats to the Honor Guard for placing 5th in the National Honor Guard competition in DC today. Something to be proud of...
I wonder how I am going to write a few parkers and make an arrest in the 08th district tommorrow Friday the 15th on the 2nd watch, when bts 823 is down, 835 down, 814 down, no rapids and 1 wagon up. its gonna look really good when I leave my fellow officers hanging so I can go into the station and write a TVB.
And then there's DeLaughrey from 017 who uses activity against you;
Time due, beef with bosses, not feeling well; These things wouldn't happen if your activity was up."
SCC:
Urgent NEW POST INFO:
WEIS is pushing a new department survey for a look at the morale problem:
To go to the survey:

Does it depress you Captain to know how alone you really are? Does it make you feel responsible for the 017 districts current predicament?"
You teach a class on leadership yet you are a one of the worst leaders on the force. You lead by fear. No activity; No car; no time due; no furlough extension. Shall I go on?! Yes, I will; In the academy you taught a course on ethics yet you changed your sister's application so she could get on the job. Now; How ethical was that?
I will ask you one more time; Does it depress you to know just how alone you really are?

Absolutely! my book will be titled
"The Chicago Police Farce"
Years ago I used to make copies of my supervisor log and copies of my fellow sergeants. The logs saved me from an asshole lieutenant who accused me of doing little. You should have seen his face when I pulled out the copies of his boot lickers. He shut the fuck right up!

Looks like the intelligence community and the military are in for a dose of abuse similiar to what the police get from these scumbags.
OT: Oh where, oh where is K9 Bear?
I heard that this from Ray Hamilton and ADS Matt Tobias. My questions? How Matt give any insight into proper managment, when it was his watch that all hell broke out in SOS. What learn from your mistakes? I do not respect Ray or really care for Matt they are both parasite on the backs of working cops. Niether one of them has ever really been the police!!! They have been cared for the entire time and now they are making policy, I think not. FOP please step and hear this. Do something.

I remember when FOP told us that 80% pension was just around the corner! All we had to do was get Blago and Madigan's daughter elected and they would both sign off on it the next day! 2009 and we can't even get a contract! Judases and back stabbers surround us all! Beware of the Trojan Horse and those inside it! (Daley and Donahue)

....Dear diary,
At work it was great! Ran around caught bad guys who fear us and helped good citizens who needed us! I know I will get back up from my fellow officers and the departmmet. I love my job.

Dear diary,
This sucks! Criminals have the upper hand and laugh us cause are hands are tied. Bosses afraid of bosses so we
have no back up. Superintendent says he wants to help us but he don't know us... He's not one of us. Citizens get the short end of the stick.
I hate my job!

You better get that copyrighted, pronto.
Ooops, too late.
"retard our low morale caused the no contract ?????
5/14/2009 07:15:00 PM"
Dyslexia is not a form of retardation.
Other things not thought of by the goofballs running the department.
Arrests made by officers when working special employment are automatically added to your stats (due to star number). Not everybody can or wants or needs to work special employment. Maybe they have an outside side job.
Those extra arrests can give special employment cops an edge and make a hard working dependable officer look bad.
I will also add that in the unlikely event that the city is stupid enough to attempt retaliation against SCC for exercising FIRST AMENDMENT rights on matters of public concern, count me in for a four-figure cash contribution to SCC's Section 1983 lawsuit in federal court.
From what I hear, a Lt. at IAD wanted to violate the 1st amendment and investigate SCC, but was told by a sergeant to stick it up her ass! True story.
You might want to try one of those little pocket voice recorders to keep a record of your daily routine and then uploaded your information into your computer. It might be easier and more convenient to track then writing everything down. Sometimes college kids use them to record lectures to assist in studying and note taking. I know you can find them at Best Buy.
Sometimes your cell phone camera and/or a pocket digital camera can be used to photograph documents on the go when a scanner is not available. You can upload these photos to your computer to save, print or view them.
It wont help you.If its not an official document its worthless.Beefing about things that happened 6 months or 6 years ago doesnt fly.
He said he said.
Off Topic: Anybody see that repulsive beast, Nancy Pelosi, lying about the CIA at her press conference today?
**********
She had to lie, otherwise she'd be implicated and it would make her look bad. The CIA (the people actually putting their lives on the line to defend this country) gave her and others a briefing of what they are doing. Keep in mind that waterboarding is not really life-threatening (our enemies do worse with their captives).
Then it comes out that (surprise) we roughed up these assholes a little bit to get them to talk. The liberals vilify those in charge; and Pelosi is standing there with her dick in her hand because she knew about it long ago.
it's the democrat way: backpedal! Obama was the same way with the gitmo pictures. First they are one way, then they are the other. No backbone, no morals, no inertial guidance other than polls and what their socialist brethren tell them.
When's the revolution?
Isn't there a way that patrol can obtain a print out of your job assignments at the end of your tour?
--Yep it's all on the PDT.

Before you leave a nasty comment look at the big picture......
I knock out at least four TVBs a night. Reason is that each one keeps me in the station for at least 1.5 hours. i dont have to answer any calls while in the station. The city doesn't get any of the court cost cause the TVBs are all usually on a suspended license anyway.
So what do you think...dog ass?, maybe but at least my numbers are consistant.
Stay Safe,

Now Doggie what makes you think I would let the boss know. He would find out when Pammie plays them on TV. Im not afraid of jail because, I dont CARE anymore!!!!! No family no kids no wife dont own a home or my car no savings. It would be well worth just to get one of those clout babies!!!

on a side note:
I saved myself having to testify in court (criminal hearing) against a fired PO Sgt.
he said he was working on a given date when in fact he took off, even though he was covered on the a&a sheets. long story...
I had copies of all my arrest reports...his name was not in the sgt's signature box.
never mind...was all I got.
cover your asses it's war and you are the targets.
MY OLD PARTNER AND I GOT SUED BY A MURDERER WE SENT TO JAIL 9 YEARS AGO. GOOD THING I HAD COPIES IN MY FILES. CASE REPORT, COPIES OF COMPLAINTS, ARREST REPORT COURT DATES AND TIMES MY NOTES EVERYTHING. THANK GOD I MADE IT EASIER OUR ATTORNEY. THE THING IS KEEP COPIES GET ONE OF THOSE BIG PLASTIC BINS AND KEEP IN THE GARAGE OR BASEMENT OR WHEREVER. YOU NEVER KNOW. I HAD BECAUSE AS A YOUNG COP I THOUGHT ONE DAY IT WOULD BE SOMETHING TO SHOW MY KIDS WHAT I DID. IN THE END THEY WERE USED TO DIRTBAG IN JAIL AND SAVE THE CITY FROM ANOTHER LAWSUIT.
