This time, the ever popular Don Wade and Roma show. Popular among the geriatric population we're assuming. We've never heard the show. But evidently, one member of the headline crew is a bleeding heart, anti-gun liberal. As reported by Badge 714:

Completely ignores that the woman tried to take the officer's gun of course - "Roma" again responding to a caller who backs police on the Michigan ave shooting...." yeah, the message is that you will be gunned down for using stolen credit cards"
We saw this a bunch in the comment sections of the Trib and Times. Why is everyone ignoring the fact that she wasn't shot on a theft charge (which was a felony anyway)? She was shot after attempting to remove a pistol from a sworn law enforcement official. What are the police supposed to do? Let her get the gun, kill another of our officers, let her empty the gun at anyone passing by or responding to the scene? This "Roma" appears to be completely ignorant in terms of police work, law, guns and Use of Force rules. The officer fired his gun within the tiny confines of the automobile, point blank for all intents and purposes. No one was in any danger aside from the criminal and the officers and it stayed exactly that way. A fine job all around, but all we hear is this crap.

It would be times like these that a lecture from, oh, we don't know, maybe the public face of the Department, explaining that if you grab an officer's weapon, you can expect to get blasted, no matter what the initial charge was going to be. Gee, another charge for Aggravated Battery. And two open cases before the courts? That means she had to violate the terms of her bond on the first incident when she was caught on the second before being shot on her third. Anyone doing an investigative reporting on why she's even free on bond? Violation of bond and she gets another bond which she then violates? Only in Cook County. A tip of the hat to the State's Attorney's office and the fine judges of C(r)ook County, where the criminals go free to rob and pillage again and again and again while on bond. A bond which is supposed to deter further criminal acts while awaiting trial on the filed charges.

Yes I am of the geriatic generation I guess (at 61). I do listen to Don Waide and Roma at times in the AM. Dom is a suporter of the police, Roma is a bit liberal but not to bad. I have seen quite a few news items of the Michigan Ave. incident. I knew what happened because I have handled these incidents. The CPD spokesperson and the baloon head from IPRA (old OPS) was on the scene. Babbled on and on and never tried to explain crime of disarming an officer. Aim your critizism at out bunch of recruits at the press unit at 35th St. If the children that work there because of their daddys, uncle daddys, mommas and asshole chinamen keep putting kids in those spots we all are screwed. Bring back Pat Camden, or was he to white?
Gee let me get this straight. Be a criminal, get caught numerous times and while cases are awaiting in court get caught thieving again attempting to take an officers gun, get shot and will probabbly go free again and sue while pointing the finger at the officer.

If the PO was able to gain control of the gun enough to aim and shoot, then how was she in a position to be able to shoot him at the moment she was shot? Unless the gun was out of the holster and they were both struggling with the gun and he was able to overpower her, but that's not what the reports suggest.
Attempted disarm, especially when the PO eventually gained control of the weapon before shooting it, doesn't constitute deadly force in a lot of people's minds.
I'm in no way taking her side, and I give the PO the benefit of the doubt, but I think that's where the disconnect is happening with the public and needs to be clarified. Too bad the "probe" will take at least six months.

On the way out as things calmed down, she called dude's momma a bitch. Dude, who is about 6'6, 350lbs, states "i'm gonna grab your gun and shoot ya all and her." Struggle ensues, gun hits floor, dude finally in custody. Dude then proceeds to kick the window out of the squad. I go to court on this. Six weeks later get a letter from Anita Alvarez's office congratulating me on a job well down and informs me that dude will be getting 6 MONTHS PROBATION and a fine of $500. Wow. Thanks. Could have been shot but hey, I didn't, so I guess I should just be happy. What a joke this system is

Once you try to get my gun all bets are off. What if she did get the gun and killed a tourist, or the copper? Once the bullet is shot it can't be taken back. You shouldn't second guess this copper. Last year she got her panties in a bunch when Golf Channel commentator Kelly Tilghman used the word "lynch" when referring to Tiger Woods.

The best part was a woman school teacher from Chicago called in and let Roma have it. She correctly informed Roma that many more Whites were lynched than blacks, and that the censorship of language violates the First Amendment. The teacher tried to show the comment in context, and said that the stifling Free Speech in order to protect the tender sensibilities of a minority group hurts all of us because it dilutes what words mean.
I laughed out loud because the woman let Roma have it - and dummy Roma had no idea of how to respond.
That teacher was awesome - our language is what holds us together and we should be able to use any words we want. I personally don't want to be niggardly in espousing my disdain for Roma. She deserves my derision in spades.

Even I am not buying that. Trying to take a gun away from someone in this kind of manner, cop or not, is almost certain to make that person see you as a serious threat.
Cops are human and if you try to take their gun away from them, they are not likely to see any downside to shooting you to put a stop to whatever it is that made you think that was a good idea.
I am not real sure I think the cop made the brightest move when he got inside the car, but thats a different issue.
Bottom line is good guy ok, bad guy in jail. I don't have much sympathy for crooks.

No disrespect intended, but the "disconnect with the public" does not NEED to be, nor will it be clarified. REAL crime, and police work is not a 'reality show' though looking at TV's prime time lineups could convince you otherwise.
Public airing of police incidents creates real problems when cases enter the court system. Defense attorneys stop at nothing to get their clients off and usually we, the taxpayer, pay for their defense. They subpoena all media footage whether aired or raw and pick them apart word for word for use at trial. One verbal misstep early in an investigation can create serious problems at trial. From square one, a main goal in any police incident is preparing every case for the eventuality of trial in a court of law. This trumps the publics' right to know, or right to clarification. Sorry.
I don't see anything wrong with how the officer reacted in this situation.
In my mind, going for a cops gun is the same as pointing a gun at a cop.
Regarding Don & Roma who I've never listened to, have they ever called Daley out on not giving the CPD contract?Have they ever called out those in chalkietown for shooting kids?
These liberals want absolute perfection (perfection in there mind) from CPD but they are not willing to make it there business to make sure the mayor pays the CPD for it.

Know every fact of this case. The officers did a great job. She was gaining control of one officer's gun, so she was shot by the other officer who was being dragged along Walton. Pedestrians everywhere in danger of being struck by an out of control vehicle. Life protected; innocent citizens went home.

Sometimes you act out of reflex, habit, training and the innate desire to do the right thing, but the days of going above and beyond out of a sense of honor have been figuratively kicked out of me for the reasons stated by 5/12/2009 01:11:00 AM, but there is another reason. I'll continue to do my job because it is the right thing for me, but just not as aggressively and enthusiastically as I once did because I learned the Daley stranglehold on city government and his management by intimidation have created an immense, dishonorable and corrupt way of doing in-house business within all of the city departments. Sadly, it will live beyond him through his surviving minions and psychophants that are not excised upon his demise, but the only way for anything to begin healing and becoming healthy, is for shortshanks to be gone. Until then, the corruption in all facets of day-to-day management and the corporate culture of all city departments will never have a chance to diminish, dissolve or disappear.

I said this same message before in another thread and will say it again. I am a young officer with two years on the job. After Officer Francis was disarmed by an offender and shot him in the head, I bought a second gun (a baby glock) as a back up weapon.
I have it hidden/concealed but it can be easily unholstered and deployed. If an offender wants to disarm me, they have a surprise coming their way!
For officer safety, I encourage you to buy a second weapon and conceal it. Practice weapon retention and taking out the second weapon and firing it. It may save your life. These pieces of shit actually have the fucking nerve to disarm us and they are ready and willing to kill us.

It really does not matter much what the law says when it comes to expectations.
Police work is not, nor has it ever been like it is portrayed on TV, especially in urban hellholes like parts of Chicago have become.
Adam12 is what people expect. But cops are human and have all the normal human failings. Expecting near perfection from any human being is unrealistic. The public as a whole needs to understand that. Unfortunately, many times cops have been their own worst enemys at trying to get/keep public support.
IMO, guys like SCC do far more than just give a place for cops to blow off steam, as valuable as that is. Its also a place people who are not cops can gain some appreciation for what is really going on out there, and in the long run that may be much more valuable.
