The case was dropped and city had it reinstated. He did everything the Police Board wanted. He was wrong to do what he did and he's received punishment for what he did. Do I thik 40 mos is a long sentence, yes I do but that doesn't negate the fact that what he did to an already restrained prisoner wasn't wrong.
The learning we should all take from this is that we must, no matter what it takes, maintain our cool out there and not snap like he did. Walk away friends. Walk away before snapping on the job.
OT but wanted to post this for others to see about my displeasure in another one of our fine judges. I was in juvy court today cal. 55(Judge Katz). Had a kid for a robbery. Same kid also had background for other violent crimes including agg batts. Judge gives his b.s speach and states son you are on probation and have violated my probation. Said judge says you are already on home confinement and as he counted one after another stated you violated my order 24 times. Judge says I could hold you in custody for not listening to my orders, but... and a big but stated I will let you go and give you one more chance. I know its only juvy court but this thug is a self proclaimed gang leader in Englewood and calls himself king. Once set free this little asshole could be the one who kills another cop. I saw little shitbag in the hallway who stated "Told you they would let me go and nothing would happen to me" as he laughed. Judge Katz I hope this kid who you let go again does not kill another cop, citizen, or even you. Our Judicial system really sucks!!!!!

You are correct. Snap and go to federal prison. Your life is over. So, do nothing and you will not snap. There are no mistakes for blue shirts. One job at a time, nothing more. Walk away from everything. Avoid problems and avoid federal prison. Look at the crimes committed by exempts and nothing happen. No penalty.

I'm an RN who worked at Norwegian American Hospital, that ER is sometimes lined with some of the lowest individuals. I don't mean poor , just nasty gangbangers with little respect for any authority. I've seen these people spit at police officers, and nurses. They curse at and threaten nurses and doctors. All I have to say is I can't believe Mr Cozzi didn't do worse, that punk was restrained but I'm pretty sure he wasn't sputtering rosey comments. fuck you asshole. You say that he deserves it? Remember that comment next time you are getting into your car and some jag-off banger sticks a gun in your face and steals your ride, or when you just made a withdrawal from the ATM and you then get the shit beat out of you for the money.
We have a system here that is beyond broke. We have a system here that allows a gang banger to violate his probation, get hauled into court and not suffer the concicuences. Allowed back on the street he ends up killing a police officer.
We have a system in which a 17 yr old female can point a gun at an on duty officer and have her bail lowered so she could attend her H.S. graduation.
So, what does all this mean for me? I will continue to answer my radio assignments and back up my fellow officers. When I'm not doing either of those, I will be sitting in my car, reading a book or listening to my portable radio. I will NOT be aggressive. Aggressiveness = being thrown under the bus when the complaints come in. I will NOT be pro active....looking for problems only creates problems for me. I will NOT write ANYTHING that generates money for the city, the same city that has dragged out our contract negotiations for over 2 years. The same city that wants me to forgo my retro pay so they can use it to fund my pension, which in reality would have me paying TWICE into my own fund.

When a police officer works the street, the only people he/she can count on are other STREET officers.
So when we hear a call from another officer needing an assist, of any kind, we go. That's the ethos of the STREET police officers.
If jfed thinks driving around with a body guard, for a couple of hours on Friday and Saturday nights, with no responsibility of radio assignments, not restricted to a small geographic area, not walking into a house with 4, 6 or 10 people drunk and arguing, while it's just him and a partner, then yea, he's the police and knows what he's talking about.

The difference between Cozzi and a lot of us is that he got caught on tape. Any working cop has given a guy a crack at least once in his career. Not a good idea, but you know how it can happen.
For the money that asshole got, I'd take twice the trimming for half the dough.
Cozzi didn't deserve this, but he shouldn't have trimmed the guy where someone would see it. He fucked up twice, once trimming the guy, twice doing it where he got caught.
Truth is, almost any other agency in the country would fire you for what Cozzi got caught doing. Don't give any one a trimming, it isn't worth it. When you take this shit personal, you lose control and this is what happens.

When I was in college and working downtown back in the late 70's, the judges use to pick up whores between Halsted and Franklin on Lake Street. How do I know that? Happened to be walking down Lake, returning from a delivery, when I see this old guy in a caddy, picking up a lady. As I walked by, I made eye contact and gave him a dirty look. The next day in traffic court (failing to come to a complete stop before turning right on red), I walked up to the bench and there he was! He never looked up, and when he asked how do you plead, I said, "Your Honor, did I see you yesterday talking to a lady over on ...", he looked up suddenly, and before I could go any farther, he said, dismissed. :-) Sometimes it good to be young and have no idea.
Wonder what some of these Judges do in their off time? Hummmm!

This is a very, very sad day for all of us.
We need to separate the wheat from the chaff here.
I think a 40 month sentence in a federal prison was excessive and unnecessary for a 52 year old man with an otherwise good record on the department. While many in the public will cry that we need to make an example of Bill, they forget that officers have a much more difficult time incarcerated so the sentence is really much more intense than the 40 months imposed.
On the other hand, there is no way anyone can justify what happened here and any attempt to do so makes us all look like corrupt fools and rightfully so. We can't expect public support when we tolerate this.
I don't care how good of a cop he way, what he did was against the law, against department policy and tarnished all of us, period.
We had a saying in the Navy: "Not on my watch, not on my ship and not in my Navy." The same could and should have been said by all of us here -- and I mean ALL of us. Even Bill admitted that there was no excuse for what he did.
When the public sees anyone defending this conduct they see, right or wrong, corruption run amok.
A two year suspension was severe but inappropriate. He should have been canned, period. If he snapped, fine and God can forgivehim, but he crossed the line and surely no sane person can deny that. I suspect that suspension might have fueled the feds interest in the case. Can't say for sure but it could have. Nonetheless the state prosecution and being canned should have been enough.
We need to clean up our own mess, not leave it for the feds. But as for J-Fed, what a piece of work.
What I expect out of this guy is:
1. If I'm clearly wrong, I deserve to be burned.
2. If it's a gray area, I expect an open mind and an evaluation of the situation based on the peception of the situation as it happened, not ivory tower Monday morning quarterbacking.
3. If I'm right, I expect to be backed 100% no matter what.
By these basic standards J-Fed isn't a pimple on the ass of a real police chief.
Nonetheless, sorry, folks. This 30 year veteran can't stomach how we continue to apologize for bad behavior that makes us all look bad.
I've certainly made some mistakes and luckily dodged the bullet on any bad fallout but this was over the top. Can you imagine going to a grade school and talking to some kid who says he wanted to be a cop but after seeing this changed his mind?
I have little use for J-Fed, Shortshanks and the cast of characters the public continues to elect. But if they aren't going to clean up this city and this department, then we should.

The us I speak of is Weis, the play superintendent of police, whom I really believe could not find his ass with both hands. This is a man, and I use the term man very loosely, who is way out of his league when it comes to leading other men, who put their lives on the line day in and day out for the citizens of a city that used to be great.
I'm sure that Weis was hired by the nitwit mayor with instructions to clamp down and try to take some heat off of the police department and thereby making Daley's life much easier. But if Daley had Cozzi in mind then he is a bigger POS than I think he is.
As far as Fitzgerald goes, when Weis dumped the ball in his court Fitzgerald could have done what he should have done. NOTHING!!!!!! So don't think for one second that Fitzgerald is on your side because he is not.
A lot of the officers that write on this blog say that they are through doing any police work. Do you suppose that that is what the powers to be actually want? No police work, no law suits.
I know that it is very hard for a police officer who likes to work to say fuck it, I'm not doing anything, but I don't think anyone would blame you if you did. However, if you do continue to work look out for yourselves. Don't put yourself in the trick bag.
I've been retired from the job now for a number of years and I thank God every day that I had the job. It used to be a lot of fun and we locked up tons of assholes and were not afraid of complaints. This was because we had bosses with balls. I wonder how I would feel today.

Well, Superintendent Weis lied to my face and to many others at Lane Tech High School during his chat with police officers from Area 3 last year.
He lied not once but multiple times. Nothing he promised has come to pass. Nothing. Except for putting Officer Cozzi in prison. That seems to be the only concrete thing Weis has done since landing here.
How is it Weis can lie to all of us and get away with it?

I posted this comment and would like to respond to your tirade which was filled with grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes, which is kind of ironic since you called me dumd. I would love to read one of your case reports. I especially enjoyed your usage of a period in lieu of a comma.
Someone not drinking for health or recovery reasons would suffice and be a very viable excuse for someone not to drink and thus trust them. I actually applaud these types of people because they realized there was a problem or were concerned with their health and want to make themselves better. I was talking about someone that has never drank, ever.
By the way, I don’t live in my mother’s basement, don’t own or have time for a videogame player, and have a really nice house in the ten sector of the 016th district. Have a nice day.
He was wrong to do what he did and he's received punishment for what he did. Do I thik 40 mos is a long sentence, yes I do but that doesn't negate the fact that what he did to an already restrained prisoner wasn't wrong.
The learning we should all take from this is that we must, no matter what it takes, maintain our cool out there and not snap like he did. Walk away friends. Walk away before snapping on the job.

I think a 40 month sentence in a federal prison was excessive and unnecessary for a 52 year old man with an otherwise good record on the department. While many in the public will cry that we need to make an example of Bill, they forget that officers have a much more difficult time incarcerated so the sentence is really much more intense than the 40 months imposed.
On the other hand, there is no way anyone can justify what happened here and any attempt to do so makes us all look like corrupt fools and rightfully so. We can't expect public support when we tolerate this.

A two year suspension was severe but inappropriate. He should have been canned, period. If he snapped, fine and God can forgivehim, but he crossed the line and surely no sane person can deny that. I suspect that suspension might have fueled the feds interest in the case. Can't say for sure but it could have. Nonetheless the state prosecution and being canned should have been enough.
We need to clean up our own mess, not leave it for the feds. But as for J-Fed, what a piece of work.
What I expect out of this guy is:
1. If I'm clearly wrong, I deserve to be burned.
2. If it's a gray area, I expect an open mind and an evaluation of the situation based on the peception of the situation as it happened, not ivory tower Monday morning quarterbacking.
3. If I'm right, I expect to be backed 100% no matter what.
By these basic standards J-Fed isn't a pimple on the ass of a real police chief.
Nonetheless, sorry, folks. This 30 year veteran can't stomach how we continue to apologize for bad behavior that makes us all look bad.
I've certainly made some mistakes and luckily dodged the bullet on any bad fallout but this was over the top. Can you imagine going to a grade school and talking to some kid who says he wanted to be a cop but after seeing this changed his mind?
I have little use for J-Fed, Shortshanks and the cast of characters the public continues to elect. But if they aren't going to clean up this city and this department, then we should.
As for revenue, numbers, etc., fuck that shit. I want to turn up the heat on the dirtbags, not worry about whether some otherwise productive citizen is wearing a seat belt.

I agree with 30 yr veteran. He/she made me think and I came to this decision.
I no longer work for J-Fed, Shortshanks, da machine, da juice, whatever. I trust many of the dirtballs and gang bangers more than them -- at least the dirtballs and gang bangers are more honest and consistent and you know where they stand.
From this day forward, I work for myself. my coworkers and the decent people who pay the taxes that pay my salary (despite the fact that a better contract would be nice.) If the asshats in charge have such crappy and inconsistent standards, that's their problem. They are no longer relevant to me. No matter what happens, no matter how pissed off I get, I will go home at night with my head up because I know that at least I met my own standards.
Yeah, vet, you're right: if the asshats won't clean up the department and the city, who will?
