Money for MillerCoors

Let's check the recent headlines:
And you can choose any of the recent headlines regarding Daley's nephew making money hand over fist and the Olympic Parade of dollars.

Then there's this story slipping under the radar:
  • MillerCoors LLC officially opened its headquarters in Chicago Friday in a project estimated by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's office to cost $21.8 million.

The new headquarters, at 250 S. Wacker Drive, for the joint venture that combines Milwaukee's Miller Brewing Co. and Colorado's Coors Brewing Co. will bring 325 jobs to Chicago, according to a Daley press release.

  • The city of Chicago agreed to provide $6 million in tax incremental financing funds for redevelopment of the property. In addition, the state of Illinois pledged an economic package of roughly $18 million to lure MillerCoors to Chicago over Dallas.
$6 million for MillerCoors. And our contract is two years and a day late so far. But hey, let's just lay off police and fire fighters to cover for our own ineptitude.

So, lets see...a combined $24 million from city and state for 325 jobs. That's costing us about $74,000 per job.

I'd agree to take a job in the city if somebody would just hand me $74K in addition to whatever my salary was.

Will this be like the Boeing Corperation coming to Chicago?

Just the 6 and 7 and 8 figure executives and their staffs, but not the manufacturing jobs. All the tax incentives and bonuses to the rich and let the backbone workforce go to hell.

Richie tore up Meigs Field after Boeing moved here when it should have been made into the state of the art urban aviation hub. What will he do now that Miller-Coors is here?

We don't matter to them. Unless the violence gets so bad that it could threaten da Lympics. Then we'll be asked to risk it all for them while operating with a skeleton crew.

Which Daley family member is on tap to become employed by MillerCoors?

It's not like Courtney Thompson didn't get a $150k job shortly after Boeing showed up in Chicago.

Not a bad gig for a unemployable neice of the Mayor.
Not bad for an event planner job.

Funny. I noticed a little article like this about Ike Carruthers about a year ago, but then there was never another word about it. It's almost like the news media is obligated to write the articles, the articles in and of themselves would raise a lot of questions but then the issue disappears. Vanishes. Funny how that works. Like, ooops, that one slipped out. The Chicago media sucks.

I have to argue this one with you SCC tax incentives and financing is a good way for a city or state to attract new companies and jobs, which hopefully will lead to increased revenues derived from their ventures and employee spending and living. The biggest difference between Chicago and Detroit is that Chicago actually has business headquartered downtown. We don't want to lose that. We'll all be worse off. Go take a look at downtown St. Louis. I don't have a problem with luring strong large companies to Chicago.

Argue away friend. But know this:

1) This is a relocation of corporate offices, meaning executives and some staff. Most of the secretaries and middle managers aren't coming along - they're losing their jobs and looking for work somewhere else. They can't afford to come to Chicago. They'll hire some local secretaries and some phone operators, but the high paying jobs are filled already.

2) These corporate types for the most part aren't going to live in Chicago. Hell, they aren't even going to shop in Chicago. They'll shop in Barrington, Winnetka, Highland Park, etc. Maybe a day trip to Chicago every once in a while, but not that often.

3) MillerCoors isn't moving a factory line here. We aren't suddenly getting a 24-hour a day assembly line that's going to provide decent jobs and open a trucking dock or three or a railway spur. They're moving corporate offices for tax purposes and in a few years, they'll move to another burg for another tax payoff.

Don't be fooled.

You hit it on the Head! States that don't cater to the non taxpayer and illegal will be OK. Watching Quinn talk trying to guilt people into voting for his tax increase makes me sick. I'm sorry people are poor and old but you know what? That's what charities and churches are for, not the government. Keep raising my taxes and I'm gonna be poor too. Its time for the working man to stand up and stop being shafted by people like Quinn so they can keep the non tax payers and Illegals Vote. Quinn was the Lt Gov during Blagos time in Office. And he knew nothing? My Fu$king A$$ he knew nothing!

I also love how California, once the richest state in the nation is now broke. Maybe it has something to do with liberal policies and taking care of Illegals?

Sorry for the rant SCC. I just am so sick of these politicians crying poor when they are the ones mismanaging the tax dollar.

Heard on the radio that the city bought Michael Reese hospital. I may be mistaken, (the news media never gets things right), but the price they said was $8 Mil. more than quoted in paper. Maybe the mayor's favorite nephew got a commission on that and the Coors deal? Maybe there should be a union protest at the sites in the hospital complex that should be saved as historic buildings. The city has money for everything but it's workers. Oh ya, we're just a bunch of clock watchers......

What the hell are you talking about?

There are only 500-600 limited/convalescent duty.

Once the new contract is settled there will be 0 limited/convalescent duty because the city is eleminating that perk.

Remember when the time comes to vote on the next contract READ YOUR MEDICAL BENEFTIS section.

DO NOT VOTE FOR A CONTRACT THAT ELIMINATES BENEFITS IN FAVOR OF $$$$.

ONCE YOU LOSE BENEFITS = YOU NEVER REGAIN THEM.

Another economic snapshot tonight in 025 -- the empty Circuit City at Grand and Harlem being torn down!
Lots of newer retail square feet, with parking, on a really busy corner -- and I guess no one sees any future for it.

About 1/4 demolished already and a guy out there in the dark tonight was burning off the steel light standards in the parking lot. Of course there was a crane holding the top of these fifty-footers to control them once he burned through the base -- maybe they're pushing the job at night 'cuz that's a rental crane, but still, and all, they can't be in a hurry to build condos there. More like in a hurry to get it erased and rolled flat so they don't have to pay property taxes on an empty white elephant, is my guess.

Right across the street is a whole empty corner of older buildings with "Grand/Harlem condo development" signs all over it; signs must be three years old by now and peeling in the weather. Another non-starter...

But MillerCoors will save us, by slipping 75 large to scholarships for borriquenos, while simultaneously refrescoing them like the Montanas Rockies with its feeble-ass "Lite" beer...

Don't make me laugh.
