- The latest state traffic study on who gets pulled over by police shows once again that minorities are more likely to be the subject of so-called consent searches although police are more likely to find contraband in the vehicles of white drivers.
The results of the annual state study were not a surprise to civil rights activists who are opposed to the searches, which are done with the consent of the driver.
According to the 2008 study, released earlier this month, when a vehicle of a white driver was "consent-searched," officers statewide found contraband 24.7 percent of the time. When a vehicle driven by a minority was searched, officers found contraband 15.4 percent of the time.
"The fact is every single year we see these same numbers," said Ed Yohnka, spokesman for the ACLU of Illinois. "There is just a predisposition to believe minorities have contraband.
Look at the prison population Ed. It's not a belief - it's reality. And that "every single year" data? That's called a trend. Trends tend to bear out over time. Kind of like "averages."
And since when does it fall upon the police to educate the populace? Isn't that the job of schools, families and the citizens themselves? That must be part of the ACLU scam - people are too stupid to educate themselves or learn about their rights and duties, so attack the cops for knowing their jobs. An ignorant populace is more likely to vote for democrats anyway.

It's all just a numbers game.
If you search 2 white drivers and find contraband on 1 then you've found contraband on 50% of the white drivers searched.
Now if you search 10 minority drivers and find contraband on 4 then you've found contraband on 40% of the minority drivers.
Conclusion:
50% White vs. 40% Minority
or
1 White vs. 4 Minority
Even though 400% more minority drivers had contraband it can be spun to make it look like more whites had it.
That's because fewer whites consent to searches so when something is found the percentage will be naturally higher.
To be a valid study they need to show how many actual people were found to have something and not just percentages.
That is all, class dismissed.
I used to enter the data for the department I was working for. I'll tell you this, searches that were on a consent basis were usually THUGS!!!! Most THUGS are hispanic or whiteboys who want to be hispanic. Or maybe a half and half whiteboy who has his daddy's hispanic last name.
Outside of some POSSIBLE racist officers that are amongst us (very few, but they do exist), most of the profiling is really done against GANGBANGERS who drive around in hoopties with the music blaring and their hats cocked to their respective side. Most of those bangers are in some shape or form a MINORITY! Now, the stats do not keep track of the passengers, only the person who is driving the auto. The driver could be a full or partial hispanic and all the other passengers could be whiteboys. The whiteboy in the passenger seat throws a bottle of beer out the window catching your attention.... the stop card only lists the driver who is a minority.
I am hispanic myself and I am sorry to say that my people are really stupid if they claim they are being profiled. Get a fucking life.
These studies are nothing but a waste of tax payer dollars. The only targets are the trouble makers who attract attention to themselves by driving in circles 4 deep in a car with temp tags breaking the amplified audio ordinances while passing stop signs or speeding high on drugs. Yes people, this is reality, this is what is happening on our streets. These studies are not taking that into consideration. Most of the consent to searches may turn up nothing but some weed but there are some that do pop a pistol or two preventing a homicide down the line.
If you are pulled over, don't think it's because your are black or hispanic, its because you did something stupid such as breaking a traffic law or in the bangers case, had your music loud enough that it could be heard 75 feet from your car. Maybe your plate is expired or you almost sideswiped a car. There is always some reason for getting pulled over, and it has nothing to do with the color of your skin.
The town I worked for had a huge hispanic population. Yes most of the vehicles pulled over were driven by unlicensed hispanic people, the stop cards reflect this. This does not mean that they were targeted. You have to have done something to get pulled over. Damn, you should have made that stop.
I guess you don't understand statistics.
If 15% of the people you search in one demographic have contraband, and 25% have contraband in another demographic, then you're either searching way too much in the former demographic, or you're systematically picking the wrong people in that demographic.
If it's true that minorities are more likely to have contraband, then the success rate is that much worse.
The only explanation I can think of for the low sucess rate is that the Chicago police are REALLY bad at distinguishing between likely criminals in minority neighborhoods and average young guys in minority neigborhoods.
Or maybe you have a better explanation at why CPD has such a high failure rate in their consent searches of minorities. Put your theory up to the test or syfp. Stuff like this is important enough to figure out, rather than just popping off with preconceptions that fall apart as soon as anyone takes a serious look at them.

Statistics are evil, but to a politician, they are golden. Every statistic can be skewed to favor a politician's viewpoint. They maybe facts, but how you present the facts is what supports your point of view.

Another factor that plays into this is there are more police in minority neighborhoods. This is not our idea, it's the politicians who want the crime in those neighborhoods suppressed. More cops, more traffic stops.

why dont they conclude from the study that minorities just commit more traffic violations? police do not randomly pull people over based on what they look like. police pull people over because of what they did wrong.
also, if the higher ups are so concerned about minorities being pulled over more often, pull the police out of the areas where minorities live. law of averages says that if there are more police in an area with a high concentration of minorites, the greater the chance a minority will get pulled over.
i'd like to see this. put the same amount of police manpower on beat 711 as they put on beat 2211. methinks then you will have less minorities getting pulled over . . .
do we put more police in englewood because of the skin color of the people there? or do we have more police in places like englewood because of the quality and character of those people's actions? it make me think that nowadays, MLK's dream of being judged by the quality of your actions and less by your skin color has been realized. sad but true . . .

The reson this study is bias anyways is because of who actually fills out this retarded cards. Police in smaller towns where MORE WHITES live and are pulled over fill out the card on just about every stop. Police who work in busy crime ridden minority areas(CPD WAUKEGAN AURORA MAYWOOD) don't have time to fill out this BS card on every stop and know it is just that............ BS. There is a reason prison majority is made up of minorities.
Next they will use this statistic that there are more whites on disablility and SSI and other government programs then blacks. NO SHIT! WE ARE A MAJORITY that is slowly decreasing. In order for that statement to be accurate you need the PERCENTAGE OF THOSE GIVEN THE FREE HANDOUTS PER POPULATION. YOU know what those numbers would look like ;)
