Gun Turn-In Recession
The economy's gotten so rotten you can't even get as much money as you used to for turning in your handgun to Chicago police.
People who turn in handguns Saturday during the city's annual gun buyback program will get $50. Last year, a handgun fetched $100.
Aides to Mayor Richard Daley today blamed a more than 50 percent drop in donations for the program and noted fundraising took place in a down economy. Last year, about $130,000 was collected. This year, only $50,000 so far has come in.
But as one commentator said on the BreakingNews site, you're better off keeping your gun seeing as how dangerous the streets are lately.
We're betting the crew that usually comes in from Kentucky and Indiana with their boxes of broken guns skip this year's event since the price is down to $50. They usually had a post on their website showing the shiny new pistols they bought with Daley's gift cards. It was good for a laugh.

Yes, there are those rallying (in comments here) to whats amounts to a work stoppage, or a self preservation at all costs..
And from what I've gathered from youtube and myspace, gangs and youths are getting even more brazen in their schemes and rites of passage. Many know that they are operating in law&order vaccuums right now.
Its not just chicago, but nationwide and global.. and the only parallel i can see is prohibition on illicit drugs.

but the way they are regulated now only inflates profits for (upper level) traffickers. Increased interdiction simply serves to create a power vacuum and or raise the street price (possibly inducing health issues due to suppliers cutting stash harder to make up for reduced supply / increased price). prison and jail have been referred to as a "finishing school" of criminality.
Continue to do good in your neighborhood.. but please, please, think and discuss ways to educate or atleast steer a depressed neighborhood or individual into self reliance and confidence (gardens, education / library, neighborhood patrols, volunteer groups, new businesses and affordable restaurants, increased interaction with schools and municipal authority) lofty, i'm sure, but please don't give up. It will take time and optimism.

Daley is insane. chicago electorate is in denial or insane, but even old friends I have talked to in chicago didn't understand how hard you (CPD) are being screwed right now. understaffed, underpaid, no security / contract, overworked. screwed at state and fed levels of conduct despite clout fucks getting off with airport/arms/misc violations and corruption.

You, sir, are downright prescient. As a matter of fact, as I noted at the Chicago Gun Rights Examiner, the crew at Guns Save Life have decided to skip this year's festivities. In years past, they've turned in rusty junkers donated by members and used the proceeds to fund their activities. In 2007, they cleared $1700 in gift cards. They were able to buy all the ammunition for an NRA Youth Shooting event in Bloomington AND buy two CZ rifles to give away to two lucky kids at the event.

When Daley become Mayor he swore to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States, and then 5 minutes into his speech he was talking about how no one needs to own a gun... but then we all know he's a lying POS, so I guess I'm not surprised...

I heard that there's a new "rule" for the voluntary gun turn-in. Once you step foot inside the building to turn in the gun, it is now property of the city of Chicago whether you want the pre-paid MC or not. Even if it's registered and legal. They're gonna have more POs on hand to lock-up anyone who gives them trouble about this.

I know one guy who last year collected a box of junk guns from his buddy and turned them in for cash at multiple gun turn in sites. Made enough money to pay for a kids shooting camp and buy all the ammo.
Just have Shortshanks and Burke's "guards" turn in theirs. Thats about 45 right there. As long as they have their kneed pads they should be ok.

The estimate is that there are enough guns in the US for every citizen to have one. That translates to approximately 3,000,000 guns in Chicago.
So we get 1,000 of them out of town (note: I do not say "off the street"). That's .03%.

Shortshanks is only giving 50 dollars per broken firearm this year-the other 50 goes to nephew Tommy Vanecko (I didn't know he was getting money from the pension funds) and to the fucked up olympics which I hope to God we don't get.
