Comforting Information

  • An estimated 50,000 felons have been released from Illinois prisons or county probation without submitting DNA samples as required by law, leaving a gaping hole in the 7-year-old program designed to link known criminals to unsolved crimes.

The Illinois Department of Corrections released nearly 10,000 felons without gathering their DNA since the law was enacted. And Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan's office estimates that county probation departments did not secure samples from 40,000 additional felons, mostly in Cook County, due to delays in implementing the law.

The missing DNA samples are of major concern to law-enforcement officials, lawmakers and victims advocates, who say Illinois has been robbed of the opportunity to solve crimes, remove violent offenders from the street and exonerate the wrongfully convicted.

And who's going to pay for all these missed opportunities? We the taxpaying public, in terms of being victims and in paying out to the wrongfully imprisoned. Damn, it's great living in the Land of Lincoln. Abe must be spinning in his grave.

If one in every 743 crime scene DNA comparisons with convicted felons results in a positive hit with unsolved violent crimes, particularly murder and criminal sexual assault, these idiots have allowed nearly 70 murderers and rapists to walk due to their gross negligence.

Well that explains the reason we check the state database and can never locate an inmate's confirmed dna sample - because there isnt one!

This state just keeps getting better and better.

1st of all Lincoln aint a spinnin' as he was a lawyer and if alive today as a lawyer probably would give a rat's ass. 2nd, as a property crimes dick, the lack of this state in collecting the dna is inexcusable. I get as many dna hits as I get decent finger prints.

But don't worry SCC. State Rep Hendon just got 30 million of the money used for such things (that we do not have--hence the need to raise taxes on every item you can buy) to build a new Chicago State Building on the west side....Isn't that great..They have been asking for that.....Oh wait? They NEVER asked for State money to build a building? Says who you might ask, They said they never asked...

But Hendon say they needed it, and thanks to Governor Quinn, they now have the money to build one...
Isn't this a great State???

As to the legislature approving $40million dollars for a Chicago State extension. I'm sure Madigan Sr. and Cullerton approved of this - wouldn't have gone through without it.

And what is their 4 year graduation rate again?

If DNA was taken when the felons enter prison, the crime labs in the state of confusion (IL)would have sufficient time to work up the samples and make comparisons to collected evidence. This would clearup some older cases and unidentified patterns and keep criminals in prison and off our streets.

Don't worry folks.

As if these 50,000 are not going to be arrested again?

They surely will be rehabilitated thanks to our Liberal justice system revolving door.

"pea soup green '86 chevy sedan, one white wall tire, 4 different hubcaps for $5.00 from Maxwell St., no plates, clear plastic taped over the back window & 'for sale $1500.00 obo, call 312-765-1313'... y'all ain't no po-leece!"

Isn't the Department of Corrections in Illinois run by Democrats?

The story is a little misleading.

Back in 2002, they were drawing blood for DNA, which put a huge drain on their resources. Now they simply use buccal swabs.

The other issue is that back in 2002, they were only getting DNA for felons comming out the door. Now they get them comming in.

The numbers are a little high considering that upwards of 60% of convicted felons released in 2002, are currently back in prison under another felony and, presumably, their DNA is in the system.

The media uses skewed and poorly explained stats to beat down on the dept of prisons just like they do to CPD. Don't be so quick to believe what you read in the Tribune.
