Oprah-lympics

Let's just shut down a major thoroughfare so Oprah can pimp for the Olympics:
  • Will Chicago motorists tolerate having a chunk of the Magnificent Mile closed to traffic for nearly three days in exchange for the worldwide exposure talk show diva Oprah Winfrey will bring to Chicago by kicking off her 24th season at Michigan and Ohio?

    Mayor Daley believes they will.

“This is a great thing we’re doing. I wish we could do this every day in Chicago. How many people it will employ. How much publicity we’ll receive throughout the world. It is unbelievable. You can’t even give us that exposure globally,” Daley said.

We don't know about that tolerance level. The fuse seems to be getting shorter and shorter. And that smarmy Ryan character justifying six-figure salaries while police and firefighters have to beg for scraps is intolerable:
  • Salaries as high as $300,000-a-year for top executives spearheading Chicago’s 2016 Olympic bid are “unacceptable” during tough economic times and some of those salaries should be reduced, Mayor Daley said today.

“Some are unacceptable. You know that. But like anything else, they were put together with private money. They compete [with] the private sector,” Daley said after dedicating a new affordable housing development in Pilsen.

Private sector jobs lined up with the promise of billions in public sector contracts should the Olympic dream come to pass. Can't you smell the corruption from here?

Yea! How many Chicagoan's could afford the $1700 price tag for a ticket to the opening ceremonies? Where will the Bud Billikin parade go if the Olympice. Where will all the affairs that Washington Park hosts every year. Do the people realize that even tho its in their neighborhood, they can't afford to attend. Yes, it may bring some revenue, but who will benefit? The loop area. Maybe by then we could hire a couple of hundred Police Officers to patrol the Olympic Village. They're not going to patrol the neighborhoods. BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!

FOP should mobilize a picket to coordinate with the hotel workers etc. who also are without contracts
and take it to the Oprah show!

The timing is excellent and there is strength in unity. Let the public really see the size of discontent on their television sets nationally...

Like the s-shanks said the publicity is unaffordable to a City like ours.

ACT- NOW ! the time is perfect!
no action = no confidence in FOP

Well, Oprah is footing the bill, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if we learned da mare approached her. If you all recall, she was an early backer of the Olympics. Factor that in with the fact that her show will air world-wide just three weeks before the decision. And dontcha think she's going to be promoting that?

We were on a Mediterranian Cruise last year and were the only Americans at our dinner table. The rest were from Europe. When they all learned we were from Chicago one of the first things they asked about was Oprah, have you gone to the show, do you ever see here, they'd plan a vacation here just to see the show.

I think this is Daley's icing on his Olympic cake.

ot-but related:

From Chicago Breaking News:

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/09/chicago-2016-olympics.html

My favorite part?

"Chicago bid officials have insisted their venue plan not only is financially responsible but could be a model for future Olympic host cities.

Two other financial issues no longer should be concerns for Chicago.

The first relates to the lack of a full guarantee, which Mayor Richard Daley since has assured by saying in June the city will sign the standard IOC host city contract, which pledges the city as a final backstop.

The second involves the joint marketing agreement between the city and the U.S. Olympic Committee, which previously did not fully comply with IOC requirements. Changes since have been made to assure that compliance.

In its summary of the Chicago evaluation, the report also noted these concerns:

• The transport plan includes factors that could be a ``major challenge;''

• The Chicago budget was ``ambitious but achievable'' but the city needs an ``extensive sponsorship program'' to make it work.

• The Olympic Village plan a potentially ``special experience for the athletes'' but noted no full financing guarantee for its construction was provided when the commission visited in early April."

Do you the the "special experience for the athletes will be a ride-a-long in Englewood , Pilsen or the Westside?

Does Shortshanks and his spindoctors buy off their V-Js to put them on the air?

I read a ticket for the opening ceremony would cost $1,650.00!

That makes a losing day at the race track look like a bargain entertainment wise.

But, I am sure that Da Mayor, Da President, and all the Alderthieves will have front row seats, and parking, and hors-dourves and champagne and photo ops.

Oh, and the CFD ambulances with the 12-Lead EKGs, they are not in our local firehouses. Guess where they, are and will be.

Oprah to dedicate show this month to Michael Jackson
September 2, 2009 3:27 PM | 9 Comments
Talk show host Oprah Winfrey plans to dedicate an upcoming episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to late pop singer Michael Jackson.

Harpo Productions announced today the episode, to air Sept. 16, will feature excerpts from Winfrey's 1993 interview with Jackson. Jackson died June 25 in Los Angeles. His death has been
ruled a homicide.

According to a release from Harpo Productions, Winfrey will remember "the King of Pop with never-before-revealed personal details" from the interview.

The 24th season of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" premieres Monday and Tuesday with a two-part interview with singer Whitney Houston.

I don't understand what Daley means by "how many people will it employ?" I would think it will employ those already employed by Ofrah, security, TCAs and police that would better serv th city elsewhere will be detailed to Michigan Avenue. Oh, I almost forgot, Ofrah the billionaire will actually pay the costs.
And he is such a liar about spending no city dollars on the Olympics so far, there have been countless meetings with $100,000+ employees attending.

Poll: Olympic Support In Chicago Fades

September 2, 2009 8:50 PM

Support in Chicago for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games has dwindled, with residents now sharply divided over whether the city should host the Games, a Tribune/WGN poll has found.

Nearly as many city residents oppose Mayor Richard Daley's Olympic plans, 45 percent, as support them, 47 percent. And residents increasingly and overwhelmingly oppose using tax dollars to cover any financial shortfalls for the Games, with 84 percent disapproving of the use of public money.

Why not have a simultaneous picket event. Anyone who has had enough of Daley's bull, and is without a contract(CPD-CFD-HOTEL EMPLOYEES- and ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTS FAIRNESS), all show up, at Harpo Studio, at City Gall, or on the Mag Mile. Bring your wives, husbands and kids. All picketing at the same time, at 3 different locations. Sorry 1st Distict, but this has to be done. I'm inspired, gotta get to kinkos.

Its better for Chicago is known as the city where Oprah is than the "ganngster city of Al Capone and other crook."

Aren't the police used for other special occasions?

There was a very strong police prescense when they filmed a movie on Wells street in 2005 and they emplouyed n one here and the city had to foot the bill.

OK, moron. First of all, learn to spell. No one will take you seriously until you do. Second, actually know what you're talking about, civilian. Movie details are paid for by the production companies using uniformed police officers under an agreement with the City. The officers are off-duty and are paid directly by the production companies.

Other special events are sponsored by the City, i.e.: Taste of Chicago, etc., not private parties.

As for the "Ofrah" thing, yes, it was pretty juvenile. So?
