IOD Problems?

We hadn't heard this one:
  • Hey scc just thought that you should be made aware of a real problem at the medical section. Apparently Daley switched all IOD cases to a private company called Coventry. This company has denied so many treatments that the FOP is starting a class action law suit. I have been out of work for months now and while my scheduled surgery is not emergency I am in great pain. I even heard of an officer (also IOD) who was in need of semi-emergency surgery who was just denied. The FOP is suggesting that we just get the treatments and that hopefully the lawsuit will reimburse us. However being and IOD issue the hospitals may not even take our private insurance. This is ridiculous and hopefully the officer in need of time sensitive surgery will not have to wait much longer. I am in great pain but am still functional. Why is our health and safety in the line of duty being trusted to a private insurance company that according to there website specializes in "cost cutting" Please address this SCC.
Nothing like inspiring the troops to work harder by making sure if they get injured, the pain lasts for years and years longer than is necessary. Any info is appreciated.

Da Mare must be waiting for Obama Care to handle IOD's too.

The only reason the 55 and out offer exists; is to reduce costs and pass the buck onto the Federal government.

The City of Chicago plans on dumping all the retirees into the Obama Care.

This is nothing new in Chicago. They've been doing it for years. 40 yrs ago it happened to me on an IOD.

Don't hold your breath waiting for your treatment.

This is a back door attempt to end the medical. As we all know you get 1 year to recover from an IOD, then you are disability pensioned out. So they delay the surgery and dump you onto the pension fund. With what may now may be permanent injuries that have no need to be.

What would happen if you got shot in the line of duty?? What if the city refused to pay? Or delayed?

May want to think twice about going to that "Man with a gun" or "Robbery in-progress". Tell the victim to call 311 to make a report.

all of the medical abusers on this job will ruin it for everyone else--- if you do not hit the medical for one year you should get a bonus similar to the physical fitness bonus... if you are light duty you cannot be promoted--- it's incredible how many people become full duty when their name comes up on the list for promotion--- and after promotion they immediately suffer a reoccurence and are back light duty faking it all over again....

I think that J-Fed may be correct in his assessment of SCC.

SCC may be INSIGNIFICANT!

Bringing the truth to light seems to have little to no bearing in the City of Chicago or on the CPD. It's kinda of like standing outside, without an umbrella(CLOUT); and trying to stay dry in a torrential rain storm.

At least one these exempt/exceptions incidents or fuck-ups will have to pay the piper because, "It will look really bad on the blog and be too good too pass up by the media." This blog is like the police scanner. It's another source for media leeches.
INSIGNIFICANT? Not.
Every white shirt reads the blog to make sure they are not on it. Watch where you step, "boss". That big pile of shit might end up on the blog for all the other "bosses" snicker about what fuckin goof u are. By the way, u guys should be thankful you don't work ANY other job or you'd be rotating jobs and editing your resume every 6-10 months after your employers realized how ineffectual your management "style" turned out. That is if there were any managerial openings available ANYWHERE. Budget cuts, you understand. Enjoy ALL the entry level positions, which is what a police officer is, tactical or not, pay rate is the same. Since there is no fear of losing your high pay rate, as there is in the private sector, you do your bidding for the higher fuck-ups, in hopes of gold stars and gold leaves. You wouldn't have a Jody Weis to blame either.
Before u respond, YES, I AM JEALOUS!
I wish everyone had underlings, paid for by the GOOD citizens, to go out as pseudo BILL COLLECTORS for your Town, Village, City, County, State, and COLLECT $$$ and GENERATE "ACTIVITY" to make you look like your guys are listening to you and "bringing the Index up, we're down parkers and movers".
And yes, I am a Hater.
I hate that a Copper will get hurt and not get "TAKEN CARE OF". Remember that phrase? Does this Dept take care of it's working stiffs/unclouted in a meaningful way. I hate that it doesn't. Especially a copper DOING HIS JOB AS YOU HAVE ENCOURAGED HIM TO; "Don't be a dogass, if someone needs to be locked up, do what you need to do, we'll back you, within reason. Besides that Index is down also." If a bs lawsuit hits, you most certainly will not be "Taken Care Of". You will be in the Department Advocate newsletter. It is on the Dept Intranet and I "encourage" u to read the past issues on there before the take them down, so you can read about the biggest fuckups AND the many ways your buddy whiteshirts can knock the wind out of your sails.

If you want to Save The World, I "encourage" you, please do. The world could use a little saving.

It just ain't gonna happen in Chicago.

Ah, fellow tac officers, one of the best things about this job is the unexpected turns the day can take when you think you've got it all planned out. Take today for an example. My Sgt. called me into his office before the tour to tell me that I wouldn't be joining my fellow tac officers in 011 or 15 tonight. (My Sgt. is a real cool dude. He's got tattoos all over his body. He even has a tramp stamp above his buttocks like a lot of strippers I've seen in Stone Park.) Instead, I was to report to Area 3 and sign out a rusty old police plow, to go do patrol in district 020. When I asked him the reasoning behind this highly irregular tactical move, he became annoyed, stating, "Don't worry about it. You're being paid. Just go."

Not being one to question a supervisor for fear of losing my tac spot, I went to Area 3 like I was told. Despite the brown stains on the seat, and the empty condom wrappers strewn about, the plow was a pretty sweet ride. The breaks even worked! Not to sound arrogant, but the old Summerdale neighborhood was pretty boring. Really not deserving of an officer of my expertice. The only excitement came when this Jamaican guy stole this old lady's purse. I chased the perp down an alleyway until he spun around and pulled a machete on me. I'm no coward, so I walked away. I only shoot perps that carry guns. You've got to be a real pussy to shoot someone with a machete. I kind of felt bad for the old lady, but it was mostly her fault. She shouldn't be walking around in the afternoon anyway. The highlight of my tour was when I started using the CPD plow to go garbage canning in the alleys. I had to beat feet when the breaks went out and I crashed into this mental house, and all of these lunatics poured out of it.
Most of them were wearing Chicago Olympic T-shirts.

I couldn't wait when I got home to tell all of this to my wife. She wasn't home though. However, she did leave me a letter addressed "Dear Ultimate Warrior." I'll open it and read it after I'm done watching Cobra with Sylvester Stallone on my 30 inch t.v. Still, our 675,000 dollar two bedroom condo in Pilsen seems strangely empty for some reason....... Anyway, enough about me. All you guys on Tac and that are undercover, stay safe out there.

Anonymous IOD gone because of these morons said...

well the reason is because some officers are gonna get hit pretty soon since there is an internal investigation going on in area 3. it seems that a few officers may have faked some injuries on a "foot chase" and it may not have been completly true. the supposed chase never went over the air and when they supposedly put the time on the iod form gps found these guys to be 40 blocks from where the "foot chase" even took place. in fact, after checking the gps all together, the officers in question never even came within miles of the spot where they got into this chase at all night long. hhmmmmm, I wonder why it got changed. once again, a few bad apples ruin the good stuff for us all. if your gonna get hurt at sunday softball just go on the medical and dont abuse the system morons. now we all have to pay. and by the way, word out is that the feds are now looking at these guys for fraud considering one guy had several surgeries, therapy and almost a year off the job and collected on the taxes for the iod... and the doctor even said the injury that was sustained to the officer in no way could have been caused by how the officer said it happened. smile, youve just been indicted...STUPID!!!!! insurance is insurance... if you get hurt off the job your still gonna get covered.. just going iod so you can collect on the tax break is stupid... if your so worried about getting money, just sign up for that supplementary insurance that pays you when your hurt on or off the job.

Daley is betting on Obamas health care plan going through so he can pull our medical out from under us and force us into the public option or just provide the cheapest insurance possible to cover his contract obligation. That way the govenment public option may look more attractive and we'll drop the Citys insurance on our own. Daleys an asshole and loosing his mind, but he's not stupid when it comes to screwing others to get his own way and not look like the bad guy or be able to pass the blame. Even if it's a violation of our contract the impending lawsuits would take years and Daley would have more cash available for the Olympics before any settlement was reached. Look at how he took care of Meigs. A theif in the night. He's trying to save where ever he can so going to a "cost cutting" insurance plan makes sense for his Olympic dreams. The clock is ticking for the bid winner and Obama is set to make some speech to the IOC in the coming weeks to push for Chicago. The ship has sunk. Now it's a matter of when it will hit the ocean floor.

I was injured several years back and IOD. I waited 3 days for the medical section to call me with a referal. I finally called my doctor becasue the pain I was in I could no longer stand. Fearing a possible blood clot in my leg my doctor advised me to go to the emergency room. A now high ranking boss who was then a captain had me medical checked when I called the front desk to say I was leaving to go to the hospital. I was in the emergency room when my daughter called me stating a Sgt was at my front door wanting to know where I was.

When I told him the story over the phone in the ER he apologized and left.

Im sorry to say this. But we have only ourselves to blame. We have let this go to crap and we now have to fix it. But we dont stand together!

The problem with "injuries on duty" is compounded by the fraud associated with many of these claims. We all are aware that many of these claims are associated with malingering police officers who want to be paid for doing nothing.
Us working police officers are being punished for the claims of non-working police officers.
I hope the City cracks down on the goofs!

I had a collection agency calling me for IOD bills. I sent a large package of all the bills to the mayor demanding payment. I never heard another thing about those bills. Why the hell did it have to get to that? That was under the old FOP regime and it was Ron Shogren refused to file a grievance and Shogren who told me if I didn't like how he was handling the IOD beefs on the FOP end that I could write a letter to the Mayor.

I did. It was more that a letter, it was a large bundle of bills ad a demand for payment letter. I never forgot that jerk and I worked hard to defeat Shogren and his cohorts.

It galls me that Shogren still is on the FOP dole as a retiree trustee. He never did shit for me except help cause me to lose sleep over IOD bills by refusing to help to get them paid.

A number of years ago, I slipped on the ice and fell at work injuring my back. I was alone when it happened and I didn't want to middle some other copper with a witness statement that was a lie, so the IOD went in without one. What followed was a nightmare!

Stuff went okay, at first, referring me to a back specialist. Then word came down from the CITY COUNCIL'S FINANCE COMMITTEE that I was to be given no further referrals. This was after I was in need of a Spinal Epidural procedure and was living on Vicodin and Vioxx for weeks! The poorly trained monkeys at the Medical Section could only say "Duh, I dunno" when I asked what do I do now? I called to speak to the Director of the Med. Sec. and she told me that if I was in pain, (I was!), SHE would go ahead and have the subsequent epidural's done and worry about who pays for them later.

The union finally advised me to file a CR on the Medical Section, which I did. A few days later, they called me to kiss and make up, and everything went smoothly after that. It was all about the lack of a witness statement. There is supposed to be one, so when they didn't see it, the system went nuts.

Coventry is kicking our asses on the CFD. Many can't get rehab paid for or surgeries they must have to get back to get back to work. Perhaps the idea is to force these guys off, give them a smaller pension, or in some cases no pension (depending on the time they have on), but an annuity, and hire a guy that will make much less and save the city money in both cases. I filed a grievance in the fall of '08 on a denied IOD. I was told a few months later that the actual grievance hearing will be in the spring of '10.

The FOP says there is a huge backlog of the exact type of grievences that I had filed. Why can't these all be done a few at a time?

In the meantime the FOP told me to pay the bill (over $2,000) and I "should" get the money back.

I paid the bills, I have a great FICO rating to protect. It cost me over 2 grand to go to work that day, thanks a lot to the FOP.

This sucks. I incurred an IOD. Went to the ER immediately and then went to an orthopedic surgeon recommended by the medical section within just a few days. The surgeon told me that I needed surgery and that it should not wait. I was told this on a Monday and he wanted to do the surgery on Friday. It took two weeks of daily phone calls to the medical section before the surgery was approved, even after telling them that this was a time sensitive matter. I was told that Coventry was delaying the whole process. The surgeons office told me that this was the worst preapproval process that they have ever experienced. Something needs to be done. How could they afford to have so many people sitting around waiting.

Guys who watched to much TV, NASCAR whatever and thought they had superior driving skills mixed with driving cars maintained(?) by the Shitty of Shitcago. The result was more wrecked cars and coppers off IOD. Luckily the PO's were OK and returned to work shortly. IOD has gone automated and is being handled via a private contractor. Supervisors had to take an online class on how to file an IOD electronically. If this company is actually denying IOD's my advice would be to make sure you see your personal doctor as soon as possible after injuring yourself at work. Also if you are immediately hospitalized due to an IOD, call your insurance and get an emergency authorization from them just in case. I am not a medical benefit expert, and am not even sure they will accept, but it cannot hurt to try. Just to cover your ass.

If you try and use your BC/BS insurance for a work related injury, you are commiting insurance fraud. Many years ago I had this problem, and with no help from the union, I had a lawyer friend contact somebody and it was taken care of. Be careful, you could loose your job for fraud.
Also, the old timers will remember. All insurance claims go thru Ald Burke, and back in the days, if you wanted 75% disability, you had to go thru Anne Burke to get the results you wanted.

That in itself may seem like putting the P.O. through unnecessary pain and suffering but when it comes to a surgery you want to make sure that it will correct the problem and not put the patient through an unnecessary procedure only to find out that the first doctor was wrong.

DO NOT BUST YOUR ASS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OR THE CITY! THERE IS NO LOYALTY IN RETURN FOR YOUR SERVICE.

NOBODY CARES ABOUT US. THE ONLY THING KEEPING ANY OF US IN THE WORK MODE IS A PERSONAL HONOR CODE, BUT WE MUST REALIZE THAT STAYING OUT OF THE SHIT AND PROTECTING OURSELVES IS NOT A VIOLATION OF ANY PERSONAL HONOR CODE THAT MANDATES GIVING THEM 8 FOR 8.

WE MUST STOP HITTING OURSELVES IN THE HEAD WITH A HAMMER, WHICH IS WHAT WE ARE DOING BY PRODUCING ACTIVITY FOR THIS DEPARTMENT, BECAUSE WE ARE ONLY PUTTING OURSELVES IN JEOPARDY. DALEY, WEIS, the ALDERTHIEVES, the MEDIA AND MOST CIITIZENS DO NOT GIVE A CRAP ABOUT US AND OUR WELL BEING.

IF IT ISN'T ABOUT ENSURING THE SAFETY OF OUR OWN, OR ONE OF OUR OWN'S OWN, OR YOU AND YOURS OR A CITIZEN WHO IS IN TRUE NEED OF A HELPING HAND, FUCK IT. LET IT ALL IMPLODE.

Heard of officer with iod (chase and fight with offender) who needed surgery recommended by doctor who department referred. Medical section said not until the city council approves, which could take at least a month. Officer was in alot of pain.

WTF?? This f-n mayor and the aldershits are now medically qualified to determine whether or not an officer injured in the line of duty requires surgery? I guess why not, they make every other decision for us. We are in China.

Mayor Richard Daley today said closing a three-block stretch of Michigan Avenue for two days next week for the Oprah Winfrey show will be a great public relations boost for the city.

Daley said the talk show host will reimburse the city for the costs of the show, which will shut down Michigan Avenue between Ohio Street and Wacker Drive from 12:01 a.m. Monday, Labor Day, until 5 a.m. Wednesday
yeah like Obama paid for his celebration.
I guess Michigan avenue is good enough for Oprah but not for the memory of murdered police officers!!!

Please go ahead and get the necessary surgery by YOUR chosen doctor! Use your private insurance and it will be worked out in the end. The city of Chicago has to cover your medical bills. They say they won't cover it to intimidate us but have no choice but to pay. I went ahead with back surgery that the city said they had not approved with the doctor I trusted because it was my back and my life and the city doesn't give a shit,we are just numbers. The city ultimately paid all hospital and doctor bills. The insurance company will go after them and any bills you do get in the mail give to your medical section. The city is always slow to pay but legally have no choice (I did not have a lawyer) I did have the union involved somewhat but basically was in too much pain to care and know the law. The medical section will say whatever they want to try and intimidate because they are just puppets who don't want to be on the street (or can't due to disability themselves) but are not sympathetic at all. F--- em and go ahead with your surgery and good luck to you! (If the doctor won't take your insurance-find another doctor -that just tells you he's one of the city's doctors.) well the reason is because some officers are gonna get hit pretty soon since there is an internal investigation going on in area 3. it seems that a few officers may have faked some injuries on a "foot chase" and it may not have been completly true. the supposed chase never went over the air and when they supposedly put the time on the iod form gps found these guys to be 40 blocks from where the "foot chase" even took place. in fact, after checking the gps all together, the officers in question never even came within miles of the spot where they got into this chase at all night long. hhmmmmm, I wonder why it got changed. once again, a few bad apples ruin the good stuff for us all. if your gonna get hurt at sunday softball just go on the medical and dont abuse the system morons. now we all have to pay. and by the way, word out is that the feds are now looking at these guys for fraud considering one guy had several surgeries, therapy and almost a year off the job and collected on the taxes for the iod... and the doctor even said the injury that was sustained to the officer in no way could have been caused by how the officer said it happened. smile, youve just been indicted...STUPID!!!!! insurance is insurance... if you get hurt off the job your still gonna get covered.. just going iod so you can collect on the tax break is stupid... if your so worried about getting money, just sign up for that supplementary insurance that pays you when your hurt on or off the job.

These comments about "Obamacare" seem so mis-informed as to be both sad and laughable. The problem here is the PRIVATE insurance company the city has contracted out to, not any kind of government run health care. They're denying these claim to make more money: welcome to free enterprise in health care. This is just the police experiencing the kind of problem people in the private sector have been experiencing for a long time, which makes many want a program more like medicare (a GOVERNMENT program). Only in the right-wing echo chamber of many commentators on this site could this somehow be taken as some kind of indictment of government insurance. To those with a half-open mind, this complaint just shows the need for a public option in insurance.

SON, I HOPE YOU NEVER AGE BECAUSE THIS SORT OF THINKING IS WHAT IS GOING TO GET THE MEDICAL BENEFITS LOST. MEDICAL AND IOD ARE TWO SEPARATE ENTITIES ALTOGETHER. MEDICAL THE OFFICER PAYS HIS OWN BILLS, IOD THE CITY 'REPORTEDLY' PAYS ALL THE BILLS 100% - THERE IN LIES THE PROBLEM, ITS A COST SAVING ISSUE, NOT A HEALTH ISSUE.

THE INJURIES YOU SUSTAIN AT A YOUNG AGE ARE GOING TO COME BACK TO YOU IN LATER YEARS, DON'T BE SO ADAMANT ABOUT PEOPLE WHO USE THE MEDICAL, IT TOO IS A BENEFIT JUST LIKE YOUR UNIFORM ALLOWANCE, DUTY AVAILABILITY, FURLO'S AND TIME DUE.

YOU GONNA RETURN THEM TO THE CITY BECAUSE THEY'RE 'POOR', THEN DON'T BITCH ABOUT A CONTRACTUAL BENEFIT.

9/01/2009 10:10:00 AM
-----------------------------------
WHAT insurance fraud? Do you stay up late at night, thinking up this nonsense?

Injured is injured. Your insurance covers it, but you'll have to pay the co-pay and reach the minimums. Fight it out with the city for payment later.

The only way it's 'fraud' is if it never happened and you're not injured.

What, you're going to sit there with an injured arm and NOT have it repaired because some bureaucrat is playing fast and loose with your health and your future? Goof.

That is not a new rule. If you go on the medical for an ailment that would require a doctor's opinion to ensure you're completely recovered always necessitated a doctors note.

SO if you have cramps, muscle aches, dizziness, headaches you can honestly be covered by the flu

The common symptoms of the flu include:

* Fever (usually high)
* Headache
* Muscle aches
* Chills
* Extreme tiredness
* Dry cough
* Runny nose may also occur but is more common in children than adults
* Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, may also occur but are more common in children than adults

And who hasn't suffered from extreme tiredness. You must have had the FLU, and not something more serious caused by too much imbibing.

Gents, this should surprise no one. Remember, this is what the administation thinks of you. It has been going on for years. But it get's worse. Anybody remember when President Obama stated that even our military should pay for their injuries sustained on the battlefield? Yes he did. Even the libtards thought that was a bit much so he backed down.
About twenty years ago I was shot in the line of duty. I was off about a year and underwent 5-6 surgeries to get my body back to where it was before I was shot. During the time that I was off, I started receiving bills from the hospital demanding payment. I explained that it was a IOD injury and that the city would be paying the bills. They said they didn't care, the city was slow with payment and they wanted their money NOW. I told them where to go and refused to pay. They obtained my insurance information and billed BC/BS for everything. When I received notice that BC/BS was paying the bills, I immediately contaced them and told them not to pay. They thanked me. EVENTUALLY the city did pay the bills but not before I was threatened by both the hospital and the doctors with a collection agency which would ruin my credit. As an aside, I then found a clause in the policy of BC/BS that stated that if you find an error in your bill and you notify BC/BS which causes them to save money, you are entitled to 10% of the money you save them. Since I had at that point saved them about 500K, I filed a claim seeking my 10%. Of course they denied it and subsequently changed that policy.

another new rule is unless u hit the medical with a cold or the flu you MUST have a Drs note to return to duty. Even if you are off only 1day. So any muscular or any other type injury that may require u to be off a day or 2 you have to get a note

9/01/2009 03:28:00 PM

Not exactly accurate. It has been for quite some time now that there is a list of certain illnesses or diseases that require a doctors note to return to duty no matter how many days you are on medical. Mostly contagious type diseases.

Heard of officer with iod (chase and fight with offender) who needed surgery recommended by doctor who department referred. Medical section said not until the city council approves, which could take at least a month. Officer was in alot of pain.

I call bullshit. Just another urban legend. The most that would happen would be the copper would be sent for a second opinion. That in itself may seem like putting the P.O. through unnecessary pain and suffering but when it comes to a surgery you want to make sure that it will correct the problem and not put the patient through an unnecessary procedure only to find out that the first doctor was wrong.

9/01/2009 10:14:00 AM

This is not BS. Go ask the kid in 001 right now who was the post of SCC a month ago for the chase he was in. And thank you to the post who said it happened to him 5 years ago.

Again, its not the medical section denying the department referred doctor's recommendation to do the surgery nor his ability. The problem is the city council feels the needs to decide whether or not the city should pay for the surgery. The city council holds our health in their hands for no valid reason other than 'because they can.'

first off, we are talking IOD that means a city doctor approves the surgery. the city's insurance company cannot deny it. they will be sued. i was on IOD once. i went to my doctor and the city doctor. my doctor suggested a certain treatment, and the city sent me to the specialist on the reccomendatiob of my doctor. they paid for it. you may get the bills because they do not pay on time. you give them to the medical section and they take care of it. the P.O. does not pay for anything.
also often you get bills because the city is haggling the bill down and the hospitals try to get you for the difference.

Scenario: Our disgusting obese Mayor attends a conference in another city hypothetically entitled "how to screw your constituents, enrich your friends, and yet still get reelected" During the informal cocktail imbibing session preceding one of the guest speaker's talks our fat fuck mayor decides to take a whiz in the john. Due in part to his specific ethnic heritage, our mayor while attempting to urinate, has trouble finding his dick, and in a bout of scotch fueled frustration, slips on the urine soaked floor, crushing his hip ( a bone already weakened by his obese and unathletic body) His not so honorable is rushed to the nearest ER by a convoy of out of grade, primarily celtic, members of his security detail. A private company hand picked by our public officials, for the express purpose of providing an earned benefit, earned by public safety employees, serving the public's interests and paid for by the taxpaying public whose interests are being served.

As for the enforcement of laws, the protection from fires and the providing of publicly financed emergency medical services, if you really believe that these are socialistic in nature, and are opposed to 'socialisms', you are free to not request police services, not call on the CFD to extinguish fires and not request a city ambulance when you are in need of emergency medical services.

The only thing you are not free to do is to not pay the taxes that are used to finance the above.

Assuming that you pay taxes.

Injured is injured. Your insurance covers it, but you'll have to pay the co-pay and reach the minimums. Fight it out with the city for payment later.

Holy moly, there can't be this many idiots on the job.
Poster number one is right.

You think BC/BS will sympathize with you and listen to your saga of why you filed a city IOD claim with them, but you lied and called it a medical claim? Yeah, and keep talking telling them that you knew you shouldn't have done it, but you were in pain, and the city can just reimburse BC/BS. That's called insurance fraud, dufus.

On duty injuries and off duty medical injuries are two separate and distinct incidents and are always handled as such. The city will go after you for not following department procedure and criminally for filing a false insurance report.

Now apologize, goof.

TO: 04:03 AM

I was fully aware of the risks involved in this job when I signed up and was reminded of them all too painfully when several friends and colleagues paid the ultimate sacrifice.

I do respect your diligence and appreciate it.

While I knew and accepted the risks when I came on the job, there was an implied mutual agreement that if I were to go into harm's way and I were to be injured, that I would receive prompt, competent medical treatment to minimize long term effects. That I would not be subjected to dunning by bill collectors for bills that the city is responsible for. That I would not have to be aggravated calling the city, making photocopies on my time and at my expense to get the F-N bills paid.

And now reports that officers are sitting at home, suffering with injuries, the long term effects of which are being made worse by the lack of prompt treatment, is disgusting.

Their physical and financial health is being jeopardized by a city that couldn't care less about you.

Remember when Obama said he wanted soldiers going into combat to buy their own health insurance? Where do you think that idea came from? Sounds like this is what the city is trying to do.

So what you are doing out there is commendable. You are doing it for yourself. Fine.

But realize that you are doing BY yourself. You are out there all alone financially. And legally.

Until the city decides to support the police, a prudent course of action is to be very careful.

To get our insurance to cover something that was declared an on duty injury requires one to declare that it did not occur at one's workplace. Once you declare that it is job related you are at the mercy of the City and Burke's Finance Committee.

You know Burke, he is the short Irish fuck that walks among police officers at police funerals with that phony baloney alderman's badge in a leather holder around his neck pretending to be one of us.

Let me tell you my story, so you will see whats really happening.

I am a Marine.

I incurred an injury to my heart during a deployment. This injury, while major, is something that insurance companies / health care providers will cover.

However, since I have completed my active duty, I have moved into the private sector and have private health care coverage.

I have, twice, asked my insurance to assist covering some of the medical costs that I incur due to this injury. However, even though it is a common injury that happens in the civilian world, they have denied it ONLY on the premise that it occured while I was deployed.

The VA is taking care of what needs taking care of

However, what Obama is doing is bringing to the light to ills of our Health Care industry.

He is showing the big ugly side of them turning down COMMONLY covered issues, simply so they dont have to pay.

Can someone tell me what is so hard about the following:

The public option will be exactly like a private insurance plan. However, the government will charge a LOW premium with LOW prices for drugs. Premiums will go to paying for your medical procedures if you buy the government plan. UNLIKE the private plans to date, the government plan will not have restrictions for pre-existing conditions; will not drop you for any reason; and the government will negotiate to get you the lowest prices for your drugs. If you belong to the government plan, NOT ONE PENNY of your premiums will go to advertising or failed Research and Development (R&D) or to exorbitant CEO salaries. That's why the government plan will be good for low income participants, those who lose their jobs, and the poor.

Liberals, yuppies or anything else- Everyone one of you who spews your brain-drippings as facts that you would die on IS the problem with the site!

The fact is that for most of you this is your first real job and you have no real clue what the fuck you are talking about! So shut up and take your laundry to momma cause you have not learned how to do it yourself!

i hate the medical section with a passion. i had a city doctor fuck me up good.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Thats why you don't use the city's doctors. Find out which specialists are with the city and then find your own. It is your RIGHT to find a doctor that is working for you, not for the city's best interest.

That is what i ended up doing. i wound up going to a prestigous sports doctor who took care of me. gave me the physical therapy i needed to recover, and did a second surgery to clean up the mess that the city doctor did.

Go to an FOP meeting once in a while, this was discussed at the last one. And if you can't go, track down your rep and find out WTF is going on. Of course, good luck with whether or not your rep was there!!

Hey, ASSHAT! IF the Dr reccomends surgery, you are correct, it's up to him. But THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE. THE ISSUE IS PAYMENT. If the dr reccomends surgery and the insurance co. deneis it, and thePO wont pay for it, then what, the dr will do it for free? Moreon

NO MORON,

THE ISSUE IS CONVENTRY IS DENYING IOD TREATMENTS CAUSING THE FOP TO FILE SUIT.

HOW DID YOU GET ON THE JOB IF YOU HAVE NO READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS??

9/01/2009 08:29:00 PM

reading comprehension skills? Do YOU not comprehend that payment is denied by Coventry.. AN INSURANCE COMPANY?!?! Its all one and the same! And we both know that reading, much less comprehension, is not required for this job. You simply need to show up for work most of the time and not get lost...

9/01/2009 11:58:00 PM

Yes, READING COMPREHENSION !!!!!

The payment is not being denied by CONVENTRY - the SURGERIES RECOMMENDED BY THE INITIAL DOCTOR IS BEING DENIED.

COVENTRY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PAYMENT OF THE PROCEDURE - THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE PAYS THOSE BILLS ONCE A LARGE GROUP OF THEM HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL THEREBY CAUSING THE YEAR(S) OF DELAYING PAYMENT CAUSING THE OFFICER TO RECEIVE COLLECTION NOTICES AND HIS CREDIT SCORE TO SUFFER.

SO YES READING COMPREHENSION!!! ty

FUCK NO, THE SMALLER, THE BETTER IN GETTING THE JOB DONE.

Amen. My sentiments exactly. I cannot get an honest answer from a unit rep or from the FOP on WHY we need so MANY VICE PRESIDENTS. This is absolutely ridiculous. Especially since we are paying some high salaries for all these guys. You'd think they were representing an entire state instead of just one freakin department. I am with you on this one.

You can talk forever about the merits of the " public " option. Just look at the Post Office, IRS and any other agency. Do you seriously want that for yourself and your family>? If so, you are out of your mind.

i saw my doctor's charts for my shoulder surgery. it was a $10,000 dollar surgery, and the first payment the city gave to the doctor was for $200.00 bucks. it would take 50 payments to pay it off.

To those with a half-open mind, this complaint just shows the need for a public option in insurance.

all of the medical abusers on this job will ruin it for everyone else--- if you do not hit the medical for one year you should get a bonus similar to the physical fitness bonus... if you are light duty you cannot be promoted--- it's incredible how many people become full duty when their name comes up on the list for promotion--- and after promotion they immediately suffer a reoccurence and are back light duty faking it all over again....

9/01/2009 01:44:00 AM

While I do understand what you're saying, I don't agree. If I have to sit next to you in a car and you're sick and contageous, do me a favor... TAKE THE MEDICAL DAY.

NOONE wants to get sick because of you and your need for the extra money for not hitting the medical!!!

IOD is another subject, but if you're genuinely sick and the city wants to reward you for either burning 8 or coming to work, you're a. stupid and b. contageous.

it's there for a reason.

I don't condone medical abusing, but if you're sick, STAY HOME! Like every other real job in the world. Offer a sick copper a couple hundred to come in sick, you're putting your coworkers who prob can't afford to be sick, in danger of contracting whatever you're fighting through.

This happens every change of seasons, we're a young watch. We still ALL eventually contract what p.o. whoever brought to work because of his kids/sidejob/being run down. STAY HOME IF YOU ARE GENUINELY SICK.

Nobody wants to work with you anyways.

To whomever wrote that bc/bs will cover bill's for an iod is smoking some kind of sh-t. I had an undisputed iod which I am on disability for. After the Dr the city sent me to botched the surgery I went to a real Dr. The Dr's office sent it to bc/bs for payment and it was denied due to the fact it was iod. I had a lawyer and I can't say if it's considered fraud or not but they will not pay for an iod. The city will not pay if you go to your own doctor on an iod. Unless their policy has changed in the last few years. It cost me 1,200.00 out of pocket. The Dr offered to give me money back which I thought was very nice. I declined his offer since I didn't feel he should lose out because I work for the City that sucks. However he has never charged me since.

One last note if you call the medical section for any reason make sure you do it from your cell phone. This way you have access to your bill quickly so they can't say you never called. Better yet if you are light duty at 311 make all your calls from the console so that they are recorded. Then when they say you never called you just tell them that all the calls were taped and you have no problem getting them. It works wonder's on their responses after that. Hope you all stay safe.
