Welcome New Chicagoan!

From the comments:
  • Does anyone know what the f*ck is going on a HQ? A construction company is redoing the f*ck up by walsh construction when they originally built the building because water would pool by the west entrance. The new company has poured the concrete and has torn it up not once, not twice, but THREE F*CKING TIMES now and it's still not finished. This is insane and exactly why we should not get the olympics. Pitch the concrete towards the street morons.
Evidently, you've never seen a Chicago concrete pour in action. We figure they must save money by not having a surveyor look at the concrete forms after they nail them all together. We have yet to see a curb gutter in the past 28 years drain a street properly after being poured.

We can't recall ever seeing a city project that didn't have major cracking issues with any concrete construction. Remember the concrete columns cracking and flaking in the Monroe Street garage? They had to tear out dozens and wrap hundreds in wire meshing.

And if you truly want to see something amusing, go up to the 5th Floor at HQ and bring a dozen marbles and half as many Hot Wheels cars. Drop then at different points along the corridors and watch them roll! We've heard that Patrol Division has a Pinewood Derby Racing League every other Thursday and they don't even need ramps.

Didn't I read somewhere that it was Maggie Daley's brother, a retired, pension-drawing police commander, who was awarded the contract to build HQ?

What a surprise!

Just think of the cost override for 2016 and the tax payer are going to be holding the bag. What does Da King care he would have already made his family and friends rich. Lets us not forget the construction companies who will use Inferior product to cut corners to make more money for themselves.Just look at HQ on a sidewalk repair it has taken a month and they still have not completed it and they keep pouring cement and tearing it up again, has this company no shame? They also work like city workers 20 people on the job 10 working and 10watching. If there is a GOD please do not let this city get the Olympics because the city will have a deficit like the federal goverment.

You must be talking about the giant horizontal crack that is making it's way around the building. They tried to fix it with caulk, which was initially kind of amusing. Now it is wide enough to use as a shelf.

It will cost a furtune to fix. The center of the building is sinking.

Mentioning Walsh Construction Company reminds me. What part of their ever expanding company got the contract to put the fiberglass sticks on all the city fire hydrants? And why???? How and where do I apply to get the repair/replace/maintain the sticks contract????
Maybe they have the contract to predict the weather for the city too? The fiberglass sticks are the first part to prepare for the on coming blizzards they need, to raise the price of the contract to do the snow plowing?????? They could create their own market. This could lead to olympic sized contracts.......

In my neighborhood, I've seen the city put up fencing around Connors Park (a small park but nevertheless). First, the fencing installed was chest high, then right after the job was finished, it was torn down and redone mid calf high.

At this same park, I've seen it landscaped with a bed of flowers and right after the flowers were done, they were ripped out by the landscaping company and replaced with a solid bed of bushes.

A year or so ago, I observed street corners in the neighborhood being jack hammered and repoured as curb corners. Then, right after the concrete set, I saw them out there jackhammering the new curb and repouring the concrete so in the middle of the curb it tapers to street level. This was done as two blocks away a curb corner was being poured. Sure enough, after that curb and the next and the next...were poured, they were redone as tapered in the middle corners.

This year, they are out there again tearing up the tapered curbs and repouring them with some kind of traction square over the tapered center part of the curb. The non concrete traction square made of plastic or some thing placed in the middle of the tapered part of the curbs started coming up so they're sending private contractors out to counter sink screw the traction squares down.

This shit is crazy and it's not done by accident. There is a financial motive for the machine behind it.

If the rest of the country knew about this crap they'd know what Obama's single payer government health care really means.

Look at 35th street, plumbing issues, the gym had round dumbells but had to change to hexagon,so they would not roll away, the desks have shims so the drawers will not open on there own,the roof leaks, no drainage in the parking lots! My friend is a maintenance guy at midway and on the walk bridge from the entrace on the 3rd level to check in it needed 3 beams but they saved money and only used 2! The concrete struture under the departure area has concrete exposing steel mesh! Another city sponsored pay me off contract, no wonder everything is falling apart to much corrupt payoffs!

When I worked in 001, I was on a jobsite and met one of the Walsh foremen that worked the Headquarters job (until a steel beam hit him in the head). He told me that the minority contarctor they hired (to meet the City's B.S. quota) used steel beams too thin to support the weight and the concrete poured was not thick enough, hence the dips in the floor (thank the Lord for rebar to hold the concrete together). Not to defend Walsh, and I truly think this guy didn't like the company he worked for, but it seemed that the City had an idea that the work to be done (by the plans submitted) would be substandard, but that they didn't care. Well just look at the job being done on Area 2. They replaced all that glass block with aluminum garage door panels.

The walls that are there to protect the building and it's occupants are nothing but sheet metal and foam, just like my insulated garage door. The panels are attached with caulking and sheet metal screws. What a joke!!! And do you think they would have allowed for a few windows to open to allow some ventilation, not a chance.

They came in a removed all of the radiator covers. The fins on the radiators are coved with 30 years of dust and grime. You would think they would have cleaned the fins before they painted and replaced the old covers. WROOOOOOONG!!! They panted the covers and just covered up all that filth.

The hanging sculpture was taken down before the construction began, you know it the cheese grader. The City claims it's worth $180,000.00.

A contractor was hired to come out to clean and restore the sculpture. WROOOONG again. This very expensive piece of junk, I mean art got shit canned by the contractor. That right it's gone forever.

They are telling us that the glass windows used in the remodel are bullet resistant, another lie. The windows are nothing but your every day thermo pane windows. Any kid with sling shot could launch a marble right through the windows and the foam walls into any of the offices in the building.

The City would never allow you to build a house or a commercial building using the materials used on Area 2.

It is just hard to believe that in this day and age that the City who claims to be prepared to fend off a terrorist attack. Would approve and actually and pay to have one of it's government buildings constructed with these materials.

I should not even mention the biggest security flaw in Area 2. There is nothing to prevent a U-Haul size truck from being driven right into the center of the building from the street or front parking lot.

But you better have your ID to get in the door!!!!!!!

Speaking of lousy construction, have you taken a close look at the condition of the concrete of South Lake Shore Drive recently? There's a lot of cracking, and it started 2 years ago. When I rode Bike the Drive, I was appalled by how bad it's gotten already, and it's only been a few years. Northbound near Soldier Field is the worst part.

Who needs to build anything well and actually have roads and buildings be safe? Seems like all these assholes care about is skimming a few more bucks and ensuring job security because the crap needs to be rebuilt too soon.

Everyone can blame the public building commission, they gave the CPD an occupancy permit even though it was not meant to be occupied, there was even a citizen that filed a lawsuit against the city and they even hired a private construction company to evaluate the job and that company (Alberg) even told them it was a shit job and a occupancy permit should have never been issued so what does the city do, they SETTLE the lawsuit and keep itas is, so everyone taht is working down there you are sitting on a gold mine if you live when it collapses......

Plus, from all directions, the center of HQ's is on the 3rd floor. After construction was completed, the integrity of the concrete floor was compromised because numerous, large, through and through holes were drilled in order to accomodate wire chases. It is a weak point and when HQ falls down, the implosion will start dead center of the building.
