No More Daily Bulletin?
Shaved is reporting that it's done. Kaput. Gone:
- More than 70 consecutive years of daily publication will end.
LeftIsTheBest will not have anything to cover his socialist newspaper with...
Young kids will not be able to stop squad cars and ask for a "Hot Sheet"
It's over folks!
We still remember finding old copies of the Daily Bulletin lying around the old man's dresser, some with his name in it, other times the obituary of an old friend. Lately though, it's been showing up days late at the district desk, the info is spotty and the back page next to useless. The DIBs was actually more informative for crime trends. But we'll miss the Bulletin.

ALWAYS REMEMBERED.......
an absolute shame,,,remember the back being a list of hot cars? Remember as a young officer the first time you saw your name on it? This is yet another nail in the coffin of our proud history. A small one, but a nail none the less.
it had already been published less than daily and this week notice went out that it would be online. Once the took the hotsheet off the back it was no fun...
Graphic Arts printed about 12,000 of these things every day, 365 days a year. That's about 4.4M sheets of paper a year. Be surprised if more than 3 dozen got read.
It's about time.
Al Gore will be so happy.
Now if the department can just cut out the printing and filing of CHRIS reports in every area and unit, we could start saving some real money.
Dont do it JODY!
All right, maybe we'll miss it, but really it's only because we remember being ten years old and hoping we would be the kid that found the stolen car. I love and miss the "hot sheet," but really it should have been gone at least 5 years ago. a piece of our history is gone, and one we wish a fond farewell.
One more nail in the coffin for this once great job!
Ironic that is came during the J-fed reign...
That's a shame. Its unfortunate this department doesn't recognize the importance of the daily bulletin. I always looked forward to reading it. Everyone can't hang out in the station to read it and the pdt hardly works. Stupid move.
And in this clime we r surprised bbbbeeeeeecuuuzzzzz? f-this admin.
So damn the salutes and job opening posts and damn about finding that one of ur old classmates mother, father, daughter, son, husband, wife has passed. That's bulshit so now only the better districts are going to find out about new postions they already do that shit now u get the damn news the day before the shit closes.....WTF EVERYDAY GETS HARDER AND HARDER with this fucking job. WHO THINKS THIS SHIT UP? How much money are u we gone save from this shit.
It's still being published, just go to the Clear page and download it. Hard paper copies won't be available anymore at the front desk. Waste of paper anyway. If you want a hard copy just print it out.
typical of modern day chicago get rid of all things all things with history
Of all the thing the department is taking away this has got to be the worst. This is the only place I've ever learned of what is happening - classes being offered, reminders on what charges to use, where to submit your resume (hey, I like dejection, obviously)
So is it going to be avail in an easily accessed location on I-clear, or is it going to be like everything else, and you need the special secret decoder ring to locate the darned thing?
Click this, that, and another, now do this, go there, up here, the middle of there is how you gotta find anything. And God forbid they should ever offer classes on how to best utilize the features of I-clear, the only way any one knows how to use it at all, is to copy from the next guy on what they've figured out .. by playing around with the system = Yes indeed, CPD renowned for it's training!!!
I;ll sure miss it ..
They didn't get rid of it, they simply went online. If you really want a hard copy then hit the print button on your computer.
Hey, all you have to do is print one every day off the computer! That way we can waste half an hour in the station every day as well as wasting the city's ink and paper. Way to go Weis!
what is the big deal? this will save thousands and thousands of dollars worth of paper...who would say this is a bad idea????
it is actually one of the smartest things done lately
It's a real shame. The death notices were very important. Another sign of the times.
Shortie hasn't paid the paper bill.
its still available online
Wrong, wrong, wrong. The daily bulletin is not going to be published in the paper version anymore. The electronic version is going to be on available on the home page located on the intranet were its been for a while now. O'keefe (Civilian D/S BAS) cant stand paper stacked up and laying around on desks (pet peeve). Reading comprehenison people.
OH OHH, looks like the incredulous statistics that J Dud has been feeding the media has finally come back to bite the city in the ass. The lawyers for the little polish girl who got a WWF style "roughing up" by Haystacks Abate, is suing for the city to produce the statistics Weis used to defend the city at the time. Now of course they say the statisics don't exist. I always had a slight inkling that that his statistics were compiled in a less than credible fashion. Well at least all aspects of crime are down in this wonderful city..... according to his experts under the bigtop at 35th.
Because it has been showing up late for the midnight crew we have been getting it online and printing it ourselvles and handing it out at roll call.
Since there is blank space on the back page, we often put our own local notes there. Sometimes we do our own watch back page, then print up just as many as we need.
I have a few saved, like the composit sketch wanted bulletin of Richard Speck...and the portrat picture one of him. Xeroxes but they still mean something. If anyone out there has a copy of the Special Bulletin, that has the photo of Jake Cohen, who murdered two cops at the Raven Tavern in the 20th District, there is someone on the first Watch in 010 who would be very interested.
It will be online, they are trying save paper, it's all part of the big study that Aunt Bea helped facilitate.
Does that mean that big stupid asshole Big Bird won't be able to write up a PO for not having the daily bulletin in the squad car? In that case, great. Another brilliant move by our exalted command staff. That will save them several cases of paper a day. What's next? No more CO book?
Jody Weis's tenure here will be remembered as the most destructive among all superintendents of police. And that includes all the supes who were on the payroll of organized crime or who were outright thieves.
The bad guys couldn't have gotten a better friend in the war against the CPD than Jody Weis. He is doing what generations of outfit guys, blackstone rangers, latin kings and el rukns could not: bringing about the downfall of the CPD.
The Daily Bulletin is not ending. You just view it on line and print as many copies as you want.
An electronic Daily Bulletin will be published. You can peruse it on the intranet or from the pdt's in the cars.
Sad. Another good thing is ended for the sake of what? The extremely popular CPD Daily Bulletin was also delivered to our collar suburbs and was faxed to municipal law enforcement agencies beyond our collar. It was a tangible piece of info sharing and kept a bond alive with our municipal law enforcement partners. It will surely be missed by us, and them.
Is there going to be an electronic version? I hope these FEEB weasal idiots compile an electronic delivery system for our law enforcement partners. It might not seem like much, but receiving the CPD Daily Bulletin meant something to our sister municipal law enforcement agencies. It was a simple, small way, on our part, of us keeping them connected to the big dawg in Illinois.
Of course, these idiot FEEBS, even though they have their National Academy which is suppose to create law enforcement partners, won't recognize the CPD Daily Bulletin as our small way and effort to stay connected and keep friends in the business. Why? Because FEEBS do not have friends.
And Jonathan Lewin, our own supposed electronic wizard boy commander, probably will not have the required brain activity to think of keeping our law enforcement partners and friends connected to us by creating a way to send them an electronic version of the CPD Daily Bulletin. Think about it Lewin. By all means, you can even take the credit if the FEEBS, by some magical intervention, recognize it as a good idea, but I doubt they will.
Rest in peace to our friend and our daily ambassador of good will, the CPD Daily Bulletin. You will be missed.
I love the daily bulletin. is it that hard to produce? and bring back the hot sheet on the back! computers cannot solve everything! after roll call are they going to allow all officers to surf the computers to find out upcoming events, job opportunities, death notices?
Yes I'll miss it too.
However, the last two vehicles and person my district came accross that the dicks were looking for [per the bulletin] had already been spoken with.
The cars were towed to the auto pound on a hold and sat until we were getting harrassed by the auto pound idiots to release them.
Guess the defectives has suspended the cases and it was no longer a concern.
So much for timely info.
And I won't miss the death notices for a civilian clerks or OEMC flunkies'
play 3rd cousin that died.
Real cops used to use these when they were Hot Sheets, with the "Late Steals" hand written, after the WC gave them out at roll call.
Gone the way of the Star mag crossword puzzles.
Send it to the youngsters on their cell phones, blackberries or whatever -
latsa luck sport-o
bulletin is still on line. go to clear system and print your own copy.
I read the obits and fallen officers daily.
Well it could restart with crime trends leading the headlines. But let us not stop there. We coud have fashion trends, food trends, transportation trends, sports trends, hell we could make this a very yuppie trendy publication for the new police. How about if we run sales ads so 35th St. can make a little cash. POLITICAL ENDORSEMENTS, yeah just like some asshole current and former superintents have done. Yes, the finishing touches to turning this Dept. into a bunch of whores.

MAY BE WE CAN GET THE PAX 501 EVERY DAY W/ ALL THE LATEST LIES AND PROMISES.
I GUESS EMAIL THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE I CHECKED IT THE OTHER DAY ONLY 200 IN THE IN BOX.
ABOUT 100 OF THEM WERE FROM THE MEMORIAL FOUNDATION BEGGING FOR DOLLARS!
DID I MENTION THAT I RECEIVED AN AWARD FOR ATTENDANCE WITH A PRETTY PIN. NOW IM READY TO BE THE POLICE!
THE NEXT SUPE IS GOIN TO HAVE ALOT OF WORK ON HIS PLATE....
Now get rid of PAX 501......
An electronic Daily Bulletin will be published. You can peruse it on the intranet or from the pdt's in the cars.
PDT's in the car? Man, your lucky.

Future Sgt. and company man.
Shit, I got more information from the 025 Gallows and the 23rd District Town Hall Tattler.
lets see, I get a call before I issued my radio, and then Im in a backlog for the rest of the shift..When am I supposed to print the Daily Bulletin?? read it in the car on the PDT?? HAHAHAHAHA...
Midnite desk crew should be instructed to print 50 copies and have it available at the desk. You can't get a computer to do an arrest report never mind print a daily bulletin.
This is great. So much paper being wasted. Great to see it online. Now if could just get it sent to our phones, we would have something to read on the long trip into work.

It might be true about the paper and stuff but I'll tell you one thing, it was good for morale to see the offices honored in there each day. At least it was a forum for bosses to get a kudos in for their workers. Now I guess that's not really important to this department and they don't care if you never get a public recognition amongst your peers. Yes it might have been paper but it affected morale and savings should not have an impact on morale especially when this department isn't going to do anything to replace the morale they take away.
On the FINAL day of the Daily, maybe someone with balls in the REPRO department SHOULD put
Daily Bulletin
FINAL EDITION
1945-2009
Cause of Death: Jody Weis
In Memory of: The Working Police
(List EVERY Officer name here)
Include a Graphic of the Police Horses with their heads bowed.
ALWAYS REMEMBERED
Such a shame. Used to pick one up at the Midway Desk on the way in and actually looked for a few of those hot cars. Have many that include the names of friends of mine that died for this Shitty City. And have the edition with my name in it for the first time framed. It was a "badge of honor" when the police in chicago were the police to have you or you and your teams names published on the Bulletin. In a Department that could give a shit less about you or what you do,the Bulletin was a way to "boast". For me and the arrests I was involved in or personally made it wasnt boasting....it was a matter of Pride. As others have said, this is yet ANOTHER way to denigrate the Pride and Honor of the Chicago Police Department. When my son was small and they had "what does your Dad do for a job day" he didnt have to say a word, just hand the teacher a copy of the Bulletin for that day. Now,with the advent of cyberspace and hair gel and tree huggers and micromanagement, this cherished gem will be cast into the sea never to be seen again.
you will be

Good point. Another example of how the leadership makes decisions without consulting common po's. Its mistake after mistake. Let them figure out a way to maintain information sharing at the low cost of sending a paper document. Hint, they wont.
Another past history of the Chicago Police Department being put aside. The Bulletin served the CPD well to honor fallen police officers as well as honor police officers for going beyond the call of duty. I guess J-Fed would never read his name in the Bulletin for going beyond the call of duty. Except for the most heads of putting officers in the Federal Pen.

I ALSO READ IT FOR THE OBITS. LOSING FAMILY MEMBERS CAN BE TRAUMATIC AND BEING ABLE TO OFFER CONDOLENCES IS ONE OF THE FEW WAYS WE ARE ABLE TO SHOW OUR HUMANITY TO EACH OTHER.
BTW, WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE FOP WEBSITE? SEVERAL TIMES THIS SUMMER THEY WENT FOR A WEEK OR MORE WITHOUT UPDATING THEIR OBITS. TWICE I FOUND NOTICES OF PEOPLE I KNEW WHOSE FOP NOTICE SAID ALL SERVICES WERE COMPLETED AT THIS TIME. THEY ARE ROUTINELY 3 TO 4 DAYS LATE ON THEIR UPDATES.
everyone will be issued a Blackberry by Jan 2010. 13,000 on order will arrive in Dec. Don't know how they will be distributed, maybe sign out with radio...
graphis arts is dismantled, privatized.
less cops equals less crime stats.
I have some from the old mans days in the 60's. Kept mine that had anything to do with me...
scc,
i usually agree with you but i disagree with how this is being portrayed
the bulletin is not ending it is only going online
its not the end of an era
its not another death nail in cpd's coffin
very few of us read it every single day
if, and this is a big if, this will allow for the hiring of one or two more coppers then im all for it
btw im not a weis disciple im not a merit hack or house mouse and i dont work at 35th st

Agree. Its been online for quite awhile now. Computers, mobile phones, the internet, etc have changed the world just like electricity, automobiles, airplanes, etc. This is just a sign of the times. As for the Bulletin all you have to do is print it yourself if you want a copy or just read it online.
i remember when the neighborhood kids would ask us for a hot sheet
The Daily Bulletin is not ending. You just view it on line and print as many copies as you want.
"you just view it online"
If you can find a computer that is not being used and works.
"print as many copies as you like"
IF there is paper and the printer is not down Again.
Can't tell you how many end up in the trash. If they started printing juicy gossip along with alerts, warrants and atta-boys, maybe more would be picked up and read. Just take a look at the Daily hibbity jibbity on-line. We get all the juicy gossip here. Thanks SCC.
When I was a young (and thin) PPO back in the late 70s, I used to give a bulletin to a kid who came in everyday to the station.
One day, he came back in and said a car on the hot sheet was parked a block away on Lorel Ave, right by the old 015.
This kid went out looking for hot cars everyday. I heard he came on the job when he got old enough.
daily bulletin will be missed...just last year put up one and i was reminder of afriend killed on duty..later that same year in the death notice a friend's wife was able to make the funnel in time..i can go and on and on..came on this nocomputers in the car..check the hotsheet
Nothing beat seeing your name on a Salute from the D for something you and your partner did.
End of an era.
Beginning of a new era, ordering that many Blackberries means only one thing---everyone gets their own issued to them and they will be responsible for it.
There is good and bad for that, but if CLEAR and HotDesk can be accessed, it will be good.
Bad is having to pay $$$ if you lose it.

I thought they wanted used bed linen.....
Chalkie visited 014 again this morning at 0530.
make mine a strawberry
13000 blackberry and no contract
who has that contract
good one for the new IG to look at
The reverends complained that the wanted pics were almost all current & former CPS students.
Meanwhile our paperless arrest system shoots out 9 pages per arrest, the inventory another 6. Who's kidding who??
Yeah...
The old man had us going over the bulletin almost as soon as we could read. Particular interest in the hot sheet on the back.
We lived for the old Blue Star magazine... Even as a wee lad we loved the way they took a pin to the inflated egos of numbskull bosses and recognized outstanding police work. Supposedly some exempts got their noses out of joint ("how dare you blueshirts poke fun at us") which contributed to the Star's all too early demise.
Yeah... We remember.
Going places with the old man and having him play quiz master... "What street are we on? Which direction are we going? What hundred block are we now? What was the plate on the blue Chevy we just passed? What year is that Dodge in front of us? Look at that guy, what's he wearing? How can you tell if someone's right or left handed"?
Kinda funny, we could recognize every American make & model from ca. 1955 through the 1970's and could go almost anywhere in the city by car, bus or train and had the other stuff the old man was "teachifying" about down pat by the time we were in 4th or 5th grade.
We shake our heads nowadays...
People not teaching their children about being aware and having presence of mind.
Was the old man hard on us? Yeah, and we thank him for it when we think about it.
We remember a bit of wisdom from listening to him and some of his old T/F cohorts about copper's kids being either salt of the earth or royal fuck-ups... Those of you in the family business know what we mean and know what it means to stand on a good name. It's part and parcel of the "family business" so to speak.
(Not all our family members are perfect, sometimes we ALL fall a little short. There are a FEW who do illegal/unethical things that NEED to be outed, isolated and dealt with for causing the rest of us to stink... Other than that, we probably wouldn't have to be dealing with feeb infiltration of CPD, i.o.h.o.)
This is what j-fart and his fellow feeb goofs will never grasp for being so narrow-minded they could look through a keyhole with both eyes at the same time.
this is why we damn them, their names, their progency & objects of affection, (whoever & whatever they may be) their hopes, dreams and legacy along with their aiders and abettors to life-long AND eternal torment for driving this Department to destruction.
Funny... They fucked everything up so badly by declaring war on the blueshirts, that they can't figure out a face saving (for them) way to fix it that doesn't involve doing the right things.
...Our apology for rambling SCC, it's been a long day and we're looking forward to a generous after dinner ration of W.L. Weller 12 y/o bourbon... (J. Daniels is for those who don't know any better! ;^)
God Bless the men & women who strap in and roll despite being out-numbered, out-gunned, second guessed and having one hand tied behind your backs. Still the best of the best... Our day is coming and they HATE us for it! STAY STRONG!
It's been online for several years now. It's identical to the printed version.I've been printing mine daily for 2 years, it takes about 5-10 seconds. I'm detailed to an outside unit and if I waited for the printed one from graphic arts it's a day old already.
The administrative fax messages are on-line also.
I agree with the previous poster though, it is a sad day. (A bit like when the Chicago Daily News folded!) I still have that edition somewhere.

Jonathan, you are a funny guy. Getting approval to go forward, constructing a 365 delivery program to 100+ municipal law enforcement partners in our county alone, not to mention our own county sheriff and the state police operating within our county, compiling all the delivery addresses, and monitoring the function of the program, is a little more complicated than a right click and download to desk top, open email and attach file to message, then send, but nice try Lewin old fellow.
I hope someone told the Inspectors. That used to be one off the things that they would try and gig a P.O. on. If you didn't have a copy in your car you'd get written up.
Keep the bulletin and get rid of JFed, that should save money even if they printed double!
Daily Bulletin now takes TWO pieces of paper to print, front and back, unless you are smart enough to turn the page over and print the back side on the back of page 1 or if you have a duplex printer you can print out both sides.
Or, if you are like me, you no longer give a shit because time here is short. Fuck big asshole Big Bird, I never did carry a bulletin, catch me you fat asshole. Also I have a web belt and nylon magazine holders and non approved ammunition and cheater pants. And I sleep in the suburbs and dream of our leaders all going to prison. Go fuck yourself.
Its about time.......stacks of them lay around every day. If you want to read it.....go online and read it. If you want a hard copy........print it. This saves money (not that it really matters) and clutter. The people who would complain would be the ones who still write checks for all their bills. We are in the year 2009 soon to be 2010.

LEAVE IT IN YOUR LOCKER, YOU'LL NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT LOSING IT. I CALL BULLSHIT ON THAT IDEA ANYWAYS...
Should have kept it.
Its the one source of information that could be easily read by everyone at Roll Call and actually used during the day. Bad guys, funerals, job openings, etc...
Think of the trees killed for all the other nonsense reports they've been generating for the last 6-7 years.
Is this going to save paper like the paperless arrests save paper?

***********************************
Not true. Have not written a check for bills in years, but respecting an icon of our organization and lamenting its transferance from paper to cyber, and objecting to the way it was done, is more of a respect thing, more of a sworn thing. Non-sworn will never understand the importance. To them, the paper form of the CPD Daily Bulletin is merely a dinosaur in the world of conveying information, but to us, it is much, much more.
The CPD Daily Bulletin, the very face of our organization, and we, as the substance of the same organization, deserved a more respectful and competent change to this icon. It would have made the change from paper to cyber palatable and given us all the idea there is a shred of respect and competency at HQ, but, as usual, those attributes are a thing of the CPD's past.
The change is not the issue, the manner and competency of the implementation are the issues.
ARE YOU SURE??? I think it's still online and you can print it out!! You can VIEW it in CLEAR and also on the PDT!

You're wrong. They will be purchasing them at a significant discount of course. The money is in the service charges - data charges. Watch and see.
OH, I get it now, this is sorta like the paperless arrest report, that only gets printed umpteen times that is no savings at all.

What they really need to stop printing is all those General Orders, Special Orders and Department Notices. They would save tons on printing costs if they let people print their own if they want a copy.
Every month garbage cans all over the city are chock full of blue and yellow and grey orders. After they sit around for a few weeks and clutter up everything they just get tossed out.
Those who want to or need to read them will find a way. Besides, they are only for the non-clouted and non-supervisory personnel.
It is an archaic waste of paper, the hot sheet was always about two days behind, and the salutes were generally a year behind. Death notices can be viewed in the automated fax section so really what is the big deal?
I know, some northside copper won't be able to get his or her salute for recovering a stolen ride.

10/13/2009 02:19:00 PM
Hey goofball, who you calling archaic?
The whole bone of contention is not about change. It is about how the FEEBS and the civilians should have respectfully treated an icon, and us, while they changed the icon. With a little effort and competency, they could have accomplished this change and showed us all they recognize how to give respect.
Instead, they showed us that nothing, absolutely nothing, is important to them about our culture, tradition and history.
But respect, culture, tradition and history is apparently as unimportant to you as it is to them. That is truly sad. I hope you are not a member of our organization.
GFY!
#1 Not many coppers read it..
#2 Hot Sheet has been gone too long....too bad.
#3 Bulletin has been online for awhile.....no one seemed to notice.
#4 Would the desk, watch secretary, and tact secretary print and place the Bulletin on a clipboard , so past printings can be read.... I doubt it!
#5 It was actually a waste of paper, now only the coppers who bother to read it will print it. I doubt a desks crew will print copies .
The kid wanted the hotsheet cuz he was in a hot ride.
If it's available online in clear then pretty much all the suburbs are on the clear system also. So we can look up the bulletins if we want to. Also, I thought the bulletins are confidential? So giving them out hot sheets to neighborhood kids, and bulletins being tossed in the garbage is a perfect example of why paper copies should not be left laying around. How many bulletins have ended up in the bad guys hands over the years from being dropped or blowing out of the garbage cans.
