Hey, Look! Self Defense Works

  • Five people face charges related to an attack and robbery of a Forest Park man early Saturday that started as he watched a movie on his iPod while riding on a CTA Green Line train on the West Side, authorities said.

The 26-year-old Forest Park man was on a Lake Street "L" train near 5100 West Lake Street in the Austin neighborhood when he was robbed about 12:55 a.m. Saturday, police said.

  • The 26-year-old man was watching a movie on his iPod when he was approached by the four men, Assistant State's Attorney Angel Essig told Ocasio. The men asked the victim for spare change and when he declined, demanded he turn over his iPod, Essig said.

One of the four then punched the victim in the face, according to Essig. The victim pulled a knife and stabbed at least two of the alleged would-be robbers, she said.

Remember - When seconds count, the police are minutes away. Expect more of this as the police force dwindles.

That is an outstanding story! Im happy the guy fought back. There is way to much riff raff on the green line. They are parastites with no morals or values.

My daughter lost her I-pod to a thug who tried to get cozzy with her almost the same place on the Green Line. When she let him know she wasn't interested he pried it out of ther fingers. Glad she wasn't hurt and the fact that her music device was seperate from her cell phone meant that she could call for help.

So keep this in mind and teach your kids situational awareness.

Stay Safe and thanks again to the 11th District crew who came to help her out.

What we need is another Bernie Goetz, remember him?

He became an American folk hero best known for shooting four young thugs whom he said were intent on mugging him, on a New York City Subway in 1984.

It resulted in his misdemeanor conviction for illegal possession of a firearm. Goetz came to symbolize New Yorkers' frustrations with the high crime rates of the mid 1980s. The incident occurred on the Seventh Avenue 2 express subway train in Manhattan on December 22, 1984. It sparked a nationwide debate on vigilantism, the perceptions of race and crime in major cities, and the legal limits of self-defense.

Better him than a dozen Curtis Sliwas and the Guardian Angels.

Stay safe, "legal limit on self-defense", if you survive and the bad guy does not, well that meets that test.

OT----BUT IMPORTANT

I just got off the phone w/Bill Cozzi. He is understandably depressed, so keep the cards and letters going to him.

He wants everyone who wrote or sent a card to him to know that he will write back--but he only has limited access to the typewriter in the library so he asks for your patience.

He said there was not even a Catholic Christmas mass, but plenty of Muslim chances to worship.

Make no mistake about it, when J-Fed screwed Bill over, he screwed us all. Please remember him in your prayers and drop him a line if you can.

Thanks.......

If the victim had been practicing situational awareness, he might not have been punched. I can't think of anything more likely to get one noticed by the "otherhumans" out there than to be completely oblivious to what's going on around you.

On the other hand, he refused to be a victim. When is Illinois going to join the other 98% of the states that allow concealed carry of handguns? A rent house we lived in was burglarized in the past, but I haven't been a crime victim since a guy attacked me with a knife when my grown children were little (Kindergarten and preschool). My wife had an armed robbery at her store (company policy forbid employees from carrying guns) more recently than that, but she is taking more positive steps to defend herself now (regardless of company policy). She'll give them the money, but she isn't going anywhere with anyone and they will NOT abuse her and live.

We shoot weekly, weather permitting.

Remember, the author of that famous quote wrote it for a magazine article, not from personal experience. He was a novelist, a writer of fiction. A deeply flawed one at the end it turned out.

At the age of 61, suffering from memory loss (from electro-shock treatments) alcoholism, failing eyesight, diabetes, hepatitis, high blood pressure, severe depression and impotence, Hemingway took what he believed was the noble way out and placed the barrel of a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

Hemingway's father also committed suicide as did his two siblings and granddaughter.

This is indeed a great story and I hope the victim recovers from his injuries and isn’t emotionally affected by the event in the future.

However citizens should be reminded that self defense has its limits. Defending yourself doesn’t give you a license to drop a piano on your antagonist’s head. Once you’ve defeated the unlawful force directed against you, you have to stop or you’ll become the aggressor yourself.

We as professionals know that common citizens do not have the training or the mindset to prevail in situations like this. This young man got lucky his antagonists didn’t disarm him and use his own knife against him. It is a crying shame citizens have to fend for themselves for their own protection because so many tax dollars are wasted on corruption that there are not enough police officers to make our streets and public transportation safe.

I am only grateful that wasn’t my son who had to face those freighting circumstances.

God speed on his recovery.

1/11/2010 08:33:00 PM

When I was six years old my father brought me in the basement, handed me a handgun, told me to aim it at the circle on the wall and shoot. My mother was none too happy. Every night we would practice until I could hit what I was aiming at. One night I asked him why he wanted me to learn how to use a gun. He said he kept it in the house. He told me where he kept it. He didn't want me to be afraid of it and if anyone ever got into the house when I was home alone I was to get the gun and shoot whoever it was right in the middle of the chest until they were dead.

That newspaper thing sounds interesting though too.

with regards to Self Defense at CTA stations and Terminals:

I recall,in 2007, a guard coming home from work that was confronted and attacked by a man with a tomahawk at the Midway Orange line bus terminal.I further recall, and witnessed, this guard back away, give numerous warnings to the offender and finally when no other option was at hand, drawing a Smith and Wesson 40 cal and putting ONE round into center mass of the offender. I remember this vividly as I usually ride home on the same bus as he does. This is a GOOD CASE for concealed carry. Its a jungle out here and the animals have 3 day bus cards. Be careful.

True. But you as a professional (I'm just a lowly citizen) should also know that the police have no duty to protect or save the lives of citizens. Yes, that's what you do on a daily basis, but I'm saying that legally, you are not bound to protect anyone, unless under special circumstances.

So it's better that citizens stand up and defend themselves. Really, it's the only way it should be. We shouldn't have to rely on you guys to save our asses every 5 minutes.

As for taking the knife away? I'd say that the threat of doing nothing outweighed this small probability. I'd just be worried about AIDS blood splattering all over the place.

Your father seemed to be a good man with foresight and common sense. We salute him. he seemed to have done a good job. Bless your heart, you seem to speak fondly of this.

This is what this country needs more of... Real men taking a hard eyed view of the world and governing themsleves and their families accordingly instead of waiting for "someone else" to do something.

Stories like this are what drives the limp wrist liberal pinkies to tongue gnawing gyrations on the ground while foaming at the mouth...

...Keep it up! :)

BTW... Ours is a somewhat similar story.

Off topic--did anyone see Shortshanks on the news talking about how the loss of convention business has had a disastrous effect on restaurant business in Chicago's hot spots?
His face was covered with sweat, his hair was frazzled. He appeared þo be off his meds!
I believe he's truly lost his mind! And not a question from the media to Shanks or Quinn about the overabundance of clout $100K plus jobs associated with the convetions & McPier.
Now they're petitioning Springfield to legislate cuts through the Unions 'to save our convention business.'
What a bunch of bullshit!!

Mayor Daley is a hot funky mess lately. I mean, nasty. Jackie Heard ought to carry around rice blotting papers just for his forehead.

Ulta. $3.99.

That was cute daddy. But, I'm a very traditional Italian wife. I let him think he's the boss and I'm only a psycho when I absolutely have to be. Usually when the kids piss me off.

That guy is lucky to be alive. A knife can be a self defense tool, but sometimes you need other lethal options.
Chicago should stop infringing the People's rights. We need right-to-carry laws right now!
