Shaved had this up yesterday. We had it forwarded to us by some concerned readers:
- The following is information taken from Deployment Operations Center Information Bulletin #s 2010-INF-001 and 001U in regards to emergency light bars that are known to have been stolen from parked emergency vehicles in and near Chicago.
02 Jan 10 / 03 Jan 10– A marked Illinois State Police vehicle was parked in the area of 5700 W. Grace Street when the emergency light bar that was mounted on top of the police vehicle was stolen. (RD#HS102849)
01 Jan 10 / 02 Jan 10– A Chicago Fire Department vehicle (2004 Crown Victoria) was parked near the location of 6600 N. Harlem Avenue when the emergency light bar that was mounted on top of the vehicle was stolen. (RD# HS101523)
29 Mar 09– A marked Chicago Police Department Canine vehicle was parked in the 5700 block of North East Circle. It was discovered that the light bar and beat tags were stolen. (RD# HR241498)
29 Mar 09– A marked Cook County Sheriff’s Police vehicle was parked near the location of the 6500 block of North Onarga. It was discovered that the LED emergency light bar that was on top of the police vehicle had been stolen. (RD# HR541615)
09 Dec 09– A marked Illinois State Police vehicle was parked near the location of 4400 block of North Mulligan Ave. It was discovered that the emergency light bar on top of the police vehicle had been stolen. Illinois State Police Field Report #(F-15-09-5972)
09 Apr 09– A marked Illinois State Police vehicle was parked near the location of 4700 block of North Sayre in Hardwood Heights, IL. It was discovered that the emergency light bars on top of the police vehicle were stolen. Illinois State Police Field Report #(F-03-09-1376)

These police lights could be used to equip bogus Emergency vehicles for use in terror attacks. This has been done many times in Israel b/c law enforcement officers always wave emergency vehicles into secured areas without even thinking that they could possibly be fake.

Too many light bars are missing. This isn't a coincidence. My bet is these thefts are from the same group. If this group is based on terrorism, they'll use the light bars on other vehicles to penetrate police perimeters.
This scenario isn't good. The only reason they would want to penetrate a perimeter is to set off secondary explosions to kill as many first responders as possible. Perhaps to attack the command wagon. Not being paranoid,not being funny, just pointing something out.
Um, wasn't 017 chasing a stolen, marked CPD vehicle a few days ago, southbound on Elston Avenue? Legit stolen from in front of a fire house, using a slim jim.
I'm deliberately not listing the vehicle number.
It had no light bars on it and was rumored to be from 'Communications', whatever that might mean.
Was it ever recovered?

A Chicago police officer was shot and wounded while responding to a hostage situation overnight at an apartment building in the West Side's Lawndale neighborhood that also was the scene of an extra-alarm fire, authorities said.
It's unclear if the standoff, which lasted roughly two and a half hours, and the fire were related.
The officer's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Years ago a state employee stole an ISP lightbar and Vehicle decals. He and his partner stole a Dodge and built themselves a State Police Car. With it, they robbed a State Tollway Authority money truck.
This may or may not be related, but the Sun Times is reporting that a MOB CONNECTED garage, the owner of which was convicted of conning the city, is back in business with the city. You guessed it, fixing 20 squad cars a month. Is there a connection? I'm not say'in, I'm just say'in. Anyway, he is back fixing vehicles for the city in spite of the fact that city law prohibits felons from doing business with the city. That's ok, he paid his debt to society.

Was driving down archer last night, in my personal car when a black crown vic,with flashing lights and siren,and light bar passes me fully lit up,the car had a bent temp plate thought it was strange! maybe gang banging punks or worse!

Well, if these thefts are part of a terroist plot, they must be pretty dumb terroists risking getting caught and exposing their plot! You can buy those light bars at many places, not overly expensive and they do not care who they sell to. Now you have to purchase vehicles and paint them and obtain the proper decals, that is not an easy thing to do. The more likely vehicles to use are ambulances.

The problem is they are probably being stolen by kids. On ebay, kids are buying lite bars that they hook up to their stereo units in their rooms, while listening to music. Its like a badge of honor for them, they steal the bar which is not hard to do. And presto instant stereo lights in their rooms.

I couldn't agree with this post more. I suspect that with the numbers of light bars stolen, it's more than just a prank or basement decoration going on. Police impersonators go through great lengths to look "authentic."
Amazing! Most of the reported thefts have occurred in areas of the City (and right outside of) where many LEOs reside. Who's watching the henhouse?

Stolen vehicle in 017 turned out to be a radio guy who had locked his keys in the car when he stopped to get a hotdog. The car was on loan to OEMC. He opened it with a slimjim.

How about instead the "Chicago PD" shows up at some large concentration of people and starts randomly shooting citizens? If it's not a suicide mission and they get away, people will be debating whether it was the "real police" for YEARS to come. This is a recipe for police impersonator disaster! 016 tact and burglary team arrested a known police impersonator in a stolen crown vic(not police vehicle) with stolen "M" plates in the car that were stolen from a CPD vehicle. I'm sure 017, 022, 008 have many city take home vehicles with "M" plates also that could be stolen.

Either someone's stupid, cellphone, Prozaced-up alleged parents believe the "we got 'em at the junkyard for a party" story their kid's feedin' em about the stuff taking up half the rec room, or there is a real problem here. How big of an Mumbai-style attack plan calls for a half-dozen or more bogus emergency vehicles to penetrate the perimeter in a second wave -- obviously to go after first responders, and panicked victims. The perps will be riding one deep and aren't going to get out and chat; I'd expect packed-full, rolling car bombs. Major, major.

True Story: After the K-9 car had its light bar stolen, a young copper from MFS went on Craigs List and found a guy from Cary, Il. selling CPD Light Bars, a little investigation found that fleet had sold him some outdated Light Bars that he picked up at 51st Garage. I don't know how many he bought but he was legit, I don't know why they would sell them to a private citizen. There is a crew of Polish North Side bangers that have a passion to be wannabe cops.

Beacuse the response time in 016 is very SLOW so they know they won't get caught. I'd think for something like this - probably 60 minutes if at all.

No doubt. A fake squad loaded with explosives and parked at the Taste or some other high profile event would be a disaster.
After glancing thru all the bizarre comments about the light bar thefts....this old police is thinking more along the lines of city workers kids from Norwood/Edison park on college breaks which ended this past weekend so maybe the petty thefts will abate, just a thought after having worked four long years of midnights in 016 not so long ago. LOL at the paranoia, get a grip folks, you can buy all of our stuff online and in stores.
