Bomb Scare at HQ?
A few years ago, during the anthrax scares, 3510 S. Michigan was evacuated after a mysterious white powder was found in one of the cubicles. We recall that the Fire Department found a brown bag near the powder with a mysterious code on it - "...unkin ...onuts." No offender was ever located and the content of the powder was never revealed. We assume it's still an ongoing investigation.

- Off topic and really funny, but the mail room in Headquarters yesterday called in a Bomb when they received a package with wires in it. The whole first floor was evacuated, fuck everyone else, and it was found that a bra was ordered through the mail and sent to headquarters.

Anybody here about COMMANDER MIKE MEALER throwing a temper tantrum in the hallway by the radio room, its all on video. This impostor of a commander is very unstable person, he sure could use some anger management sessions with a couple of doctors, it sure looks like he is loosing it! The 017 has turned into a hostile work environment with the COMMANDER OF POLICE throwing the parking and moving ticket books on the floor in a fit of rage, it does not look very nice, especially when you see the video. Police officers are held to a higher standard but when it comes to a commander the department turns its head. This so called COMMANDER is totally loosing his cool and this is not the first time he looses his temper!! PLEASE would someone from the blog show the video it tells the whole story about M.M.
017 we think we have a bomb ticking at the 017th district, its MIKE MEALER hes about to go off again!
Then there is the story of Officer Stumps(sp?)from the Old Headquarters building at 11th & State. I recall his first name was Fred. He was a portly gentleman, balding and the gunbelt around his waist had an Imperial German Army belt buckle with the motto, "Gott Mit Uns". He was the lobby guard on days, and for the most part stayed at the battered blond wood podium near the front door. In those days, mid 1970's, after the Viet Nam War ended there still wasn't much attention paid to security at police facilities. After all, who is going to attack a police headquarters in this country, even if they did there you had the 1st District Calvary right behind you.
But we did have domestic terrorists such as the Weathermen, various racial anarchy proponents who did go into cities to raise hell in the name of some cause. On one hot afternoon there was a lot of trouble in the Loop. All the troops were downtown and Fred was alone at his post in the Headquarters lobby.
He kept his eyes open watching the few passersby and listened to the radio for what was going on in the First and Eighteenth Districts. As I recall there was a shaggy, young couple that passed in front of HQ who stopped for a moment to dispose of a Kentucky Fried Chicken container in the litterbasket outside the front door. They then scurried into the subway entrance.
Something just wasn't right about this a Fred decided to take a closer look. He checked the package and saw what appeared to be a crude bomb. Fred grabbed the basket and did the only thing he could do and dragged it as far from the front of the building as he could. He called it in on the radio and stopped traffic...and it happened, the bomb blew up.
It wasn't a very large bomb, maybe just enough to shatter the windows in front of the building and spray glass on anyone in the lobby, and on the Haymarket Statue which was there at the time. But thanks to Fred, it went off at a safe distance from the front door.
He received a Commendation of some sort from Superintendent Rochford, and I suppose that everyone who worked at HQ from then on had to smile or give him a nod when they came or went from work. So here's to you Fred, wherever you are, and I will have to raise a glass of schnapps and prositt!

Honest opinion of IPRA. They are a lot like other organizations. They have good and bad people working for them. If you do join use a open mind when you investigate allegations. Don't get jaded either way. Investigate both your accused Officer and Complainant. You are probably going to get some grief on this board for asking the question but all I can say is be fair in your investigation. Don't let anyone influence your decision. If you can do that then by all means join IPRA. If you are coming in with a preconceived notions then or an agenda either way then please do not take the position.

The layoffs on Dec. 14 were one of several cost-cutting measures the city's Police Department is implementing to help close a citywide $11 million deficit this year. Others include not filling eight other positions vacant due to departures or retirements, and closing the front desk at police headquarters on nights and weekends.
Reducing the number of officers will lead to longer response times for Naperville residents, said Vince Clark, president of the Naperville Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 42.
"The services they're accustomed to are going to be drastically reduced," Clark said.

one of the guys brought homemade chilli to the unit today, and shortlly afterward those that ate the great tasting chilli dropped a few bombs. the unit had to be evacuated.
I can't believe the crybabies in 17! You come to work in a nice station, good spots to eat, little crime to worry about, no vacant lots and burned out buildings to drive around, no lounges that go up for grabs every weekend, not every third person carrying a gun on the streets wanting to shoot you. I really do not see what your complaints are. Try working some of the tough districts on the south and west sides. Who cares about Mealer? The fact that you get the same pay for working the 3rd watch in 17 as you do for working the 3rd watch in 007 is the real crying shame. Blame that on the FOP

When I worked a fast district bosses were always great. They were glad you showed up to work. The nitpicking nonsense that these bosses in 017 come up with is beyond demoralizing and pathetic. Everything is a scare tactic. That style of management went out in the 50's. Romper room at its best. And these are our leaders. No wonder we are so messed up!

Depending on the size of a suspect package, sometimes shelter in place is the way to go. Evacuating the floor with the package is usually better than everyone in the building walking past the area that is within a possible blast zone. Even with our low bid building standards - it would have to be pretty large device to penetrate through the floor/ceiling to another level.

Let me set the record straight about some things in 017. It is like the 08th District, geographically large and at one time a retirement spot. Just like the marquette park area in 08, the large number of apartment buildings led to a large number of section 8 tenants from the southside, westside, and those relocated from the projects. These "tenants" were added to an evolving mix of about 20 different latin gangs and their off-shoots. Add that to the immigrant parents who are working their asses off, but dont have a clue what little Johnny or Juan is doing. On top of that, you have a large middle-eastern and African immigrant population. It is not uncommon to make a street stop and get a "notify homeland security, terrorist task force" message.
At one time, it was a slow place to work, but that was then, this is now. Homicides and violence are increasing and manpower is decreasing, as all of the police resources are sucked up by the southside.
True, there are busier places to work, but there are slower places too. We should all be more concerned about sticking together and going home safe every night instead of bashing one District over another. When a police officer gets killed (yes, it happens in 019 too..RIP Rick F.) we are all sad and quick to post our sympathy and point fingers at the Dept. Any one of us could be killed in the line of duty, any District, any time. We need to show our support for each other and remember the noble things about this job that no boss or Superintendent can take away.

He can lead a horse to water then hide in an office then ignore it then dump it so to send it a message rather than teach it to drink!

I worked with Mike Mealer years ago when he was a sergeant. I really do not believe that he is a " clout baby". It took him a long time to make exempt. Although we did not get along at times because of his arrogance, I found him to be a hard working and knowledgeable individual who always tried to do the right thing. He does have a law degree and that, for most, carries some weight.If you do not like his personality, fair enough. But, personality should not have a bearing on the persons job and assignments. If it did, most police officers whould never get a transfer.
