"Relationship" Meeting

E-mails that make you go, "Hmmmm:"
  • Word is News Affairs is having some big pow wow today at 35th with the media to examine the CPD/Media "relationship." Don't know what that means or whats to be discussed. And don't know if Weis is sitting in (no doubt a Policy Group member will be tho)...but figured you'd want to know.
Any word on what was decided? How many bad stories are going to be run as opposed to ones that make the police look human? Because word on the street is there are a number of bad stories about to break loose, including a continuing scandal that doesn't involve SOS.

We heard a rumor that item #1 on the agenda was Fran and Frank have to stop quoting people who use the word, "J-Fed." Item #2 was that whenever referring to the Chief of Staff, they had to say, "Masters of the Universe" at least once.

Here's my definition of "relationship with the media":

They are the ENEMY, and should be treated accordingly.

This should ring true with every copper that has an ounce of self-preservation coursing through their veins.

Yes, it's a vague definition. However, this definition can, and should, be interpreted and implemented in a number of ways, depending on it's application.

Don't, even for a second, let your guard down when the media runs a feel-good story about a P.O. bringing Boo-Boo presents on Christmas after the crib burned down. The media are parasites foremost and opportunistic businesses second; your 5 minutes of glory today will soon be overshadowed 1000-fold when the simplest of errors is committed, whether intentional or otherwise. On duty or off duty. News sells. Good news sells better. And bad news sells the best.

And while we're forbidden by G.O.'s and various department regulations from making statements to the media, I ALWAYS like to whet their appetite when they show up on-scene begging for tidbits of information, desperately trying to be the first outlet to break a story...only the joke's been on them for quite a while.

Seems MISinformation regarding particulars at crime scenes, fires, traffic accidents, et al, is devoured and regurgitated by hungry reporters, too. I only pray that some of these heartless bastards were ultimately called on the carpet by their superiors when they found out there was no such gang as the "Skokie Vice Lords" responsible for the homicide at Lavergne & Maypole.

A very old, very wise partner once told me the following regarding the criminal element: "Keep 'em stupid, kid - it makes our job that much easier". The same theory/approach has proven just as effective when used on the media whores.

"Relationship Meetings" are a joke and everyone knows it.

Genuine relationships, such as the relationship CPD has with mainstream, community, and web-based media should be professional, objective, and respectful of the work each group does.

"Meetings" are not going to bring about the change CPD wants.

Perhaps being consistently honest and transparent with the media might help communities understand violence, crime, victim issues, police frustrations, etc... The media could be a valuable conduit to promote non-violence and relationship building between communities and the police.

Set up public relations policies and procedures that both CPD and Media reps agree upon, and start from there.

Agitators and self-serving instigators, like the "Reverends" need to be put at arms length by both CPD and the Media, for their goals are not really to promote non-violence in communities but to agitate and create divisions within the community and with the police.

Reverends need to be promoting non-violence by spiritually inspiring their congregation members to think and act in non-violent ways, developing leaders who promote non-violence, and not injecting themselves into CPD business and promoting violence through agitation within communities.

The real work in the area of community non-violence promtion comes from home grown everyday people who are not often portrayed in the media...

... like the woman who called for help, using the police car radio, after a police officer was injured in a car accident (something that was posted on this blog). A few months ago we all read about the injured officer who had his wallet and gun stolen after a car crash, while he was unconscious. Would be great to hear about an everyday citizen helping an injured officer in the news... too.

Will a superficial "relationship" meeting change anything? Or will a genuine change of attitude and moving toward a shared responsibility to promote non-violence in communities through a professional relationship between media and CPD be the answer?

How about getting a boss to run News Affairs who actually was the police. Lt MB never did a lick of police work in her "career" and she is the Lt there. Bring back Pat Camden(sp) And get rid of the people who have been on scholarship.

Also..... Does anyone actually read a "paper" newspaper anymore? I don't. Let's start witting the Trib and Times for all their illegal u-turns, driving left of center, and running of red lights that we have been over looking forever.

The media are a bunch of liberal hacks who hate the police. The only time they write something decent is an occasional atta-boy filler article on page 10. Nonsense stuff like the off-duty sgt involved in mva that wasn't her fault makes front page news. The general public that has an once of knowledge knows it. The only time the media gets cozy with the cpd is when one is tragically killed, then it's sensationalism for them and nothing else.

Hey 7:14, Shouldn't you be at your desk in the fucking useless CEASEFIRE office!! Spare us the liberal, we should work together bullshit.
The term relationship shouldn't even be used in the same sentence with CPD and the media. What relationship? Oh the one where the media goes out of their way to make a policemen look at fault or in the wrong in every police shooting? Or the media that can turn a female police sgt. into a villain for being in a fatal auto accident with no fault of her own whatsoever?
I have said this several times on this blog, the media at their highest form are parasites feeding off anyone or thing that can create revenue. These parasites will carry out this mission with no regard for who any person or organization, i.e. CPD that gets slandered or villified along the way.
The media lives and dies by information, and I only wish our department would see this and simply stop providing info to them.
Big deal, so a few stories about big dope busts or p/o's saving people from fires doesn't hit the news, who gives a shit? if you came on this job for the accolades you must be scratching your own head by now.
What right does the media have to know about our police shootings and other things like command postions or realignment? They don't!!
The media is garbage and should be cut out of all the day to day operations of our department. Now, I realize this will never happen, do to all the red tape, politicians and bosses with agenda's, but god I am tired of being the fucking whipping boy in this city.
Just a pissed member of the patrol division!!

This meeting between police and the media did take place, as you reported.

It was more than a feel-good "relationship" meeting" and is the beginning of a process intended to improve communication between media and the department.

New media relations policies will soon be rolled out district by district.

Among the steps taken to stop stonewalling of the media by some POs (or MISinformation, as WSIDN put it), all reporters now have the cell phone numbers of top police brass.

Media were urged to call whenever they run into obstructionist officers -- for a swift response from somebody with at least one star on their shoulder.

SCC,

Please make this topic a post. I do agree with the goof who posted the below posting. We, are the collective fools here.

The CFD fought the Gold Braid Pension and won, why didn't FOP?

If the exempts receive a higher pension so be it. The Pension Fund should not fund their "Golden Parachutes". Let the City of Chicago fund them, not every working stiff.

CFD has it correct, fuck these leeches, they are draining our pension. The exempt rank for three years deal, is killing what is left of our pension.

This is just another way Daley buys racial/ethnic support on our backs!

When the taxpayer has to pay for it, via the General Fund, it will stop. Until then, we will be stuck with nothing but political hack after political hack, spineless, no clue, no balls suckasses.

This is not only ruining the entire CPD but killing our pension fund.

Lets demand that this blatant abuse be stopped. This would even help out future Superintendents in their appointments.

An 'honest working relationship' requires both parties to said relationship to be honest.

The media whores are not honest.

The 'communities' you speak of are not honest.

The media does not serve anything, or anyone, but themselves.

Currently, the media's self serving interests coincide with this city's, and county's, political machines, both of which pander to the lowest common denominator, ignorance.

What I want to know is where is the relationship between News Affairs and the police. You got two bosses in that unit, one a sworn Lt. and we don't her jack from them on nothing. No news releases to exonerate or advocate the police. Nothing. All we hear from new affairs is some cop who answered the fucking phone and sold a street cop down the river. Where was news affairs when the off duty sgt got unfairly blamed or put in a suggestible light after someone died in the roadway? Who are these people in that office and why are they getting paid? Inquiring minds want to know. The chicago police doesn't have a damn spokesperson. I never thought I would see the day that I wish monique bond was in that office. At least you heard something from her.
