Maintenance Shortcuts?

Anyone else getting the impression that things are falling apart around here?
  • It's a startling discovery: Massive iron bolts could be falling from CTA elevated tracks.

[...] CBS 2 photographer [...] found 7-inch-long metal screws and bolts on Lake street under the CTA's elevated Green Line.

[...] noticed the bolts in the street as he biked to work over the past several months. So where did they come from?

"It's obviously some sort of rivet," he said. "I don't see how these would just magically appear out of nowhere in the middle of Lake Street."
It's not magic wise-ass - it's gravity. Now how about checking out any one-mile stretch of a random Chicago street and count the potholes. Check out the sinking sewer covers. You'd be surprised how easy it is to find a hydrant with an ice puddle surrounding it for 20 or 30 feet. Daley's cutting of basic maintenance is contributing to a steady failure of infrastructure and it's only a matter of time until something seriously collapses.

you guys should check out the street under the viaduct at 15th and paulina, the cones they set up in the middle of the streets are under ice with two inches of the tip of the cone sticking out.

Don't forget patronage and "minority" contracting. Never going after the company to make repairs or fix their mistakes, just hiring another connected company to "fix" it...

Let's hope if anything "seriously collapses", it's the 6th floor at City Hall...while the 5th floor is occupied by Shortshanks, of course.

If that's an unreasonable request, I'll settle for the collapse of 5th Floor at HQ for my second choice. And given the fact that the levelness of the floors in that place already closely resemble a carnival Fun House, it really isn't a stretch of the imagination.

I've never heard of the possibility of magical rivets until I read this blog. But I never knew Mike Masters before I read this blog.

slowly but surely the taxpaying property owners and businesses are leaving because they can't stand the stench that is proliferating the city proper.... bye bye tax base, bye bye money for anything you can think of--- you are left with all the leeches who take everything for free and contribute nothing but despair and adversity--- and the more the mighty mick hits up the suckers stuck here, the more they cave in and move out because they can't take it anymore....

My favorite stretch of road is just after you exit SB LSD at Grand. That 2-3 block drive from Illinois to Lower Wacker Drive is just lovely. Traffic almost comes to a stand-still, the potholes are so bad.

The sad part is, it's 2 blocks from a major tourist attaction (Navy Pier), but nothing has been done for at least 2 years. And, it's only getting worse. I wonder if the IOC drove over that crap when they did their tour of the city.

Can anyone tell me why the city didn't resurface the half block stretch of the north bound lanes of Western Ave, just before the bridge (approx 3100)?

They resurfaced the bridge, but not this one portion. EVerytime it rains, the water pools at the bottom of the hill and the street leading up to the hill is sh*t!

This city is so f*cked up it's not even funny anymore...

It is a crime the way the City has been neglected by daley. I hope the first major collapse to occur is the Daley Crime Family, with long prison sentences for all parties concerned.

As A CTA employee, maintenance does not matter to these guys. It is unbelievable what goes on and the lack of management. And Paul Volpe is going to be dumped on us, that will help our monet crisis.

"Maintenance Shortcuts?"

Have you ever heard of the Great Loop Flood? City employees knew right away something was wrong when they found perch swimming in the sub-basement of City Hall and they knew the fishing down there was not that good normally.

The richard m. daley guiding principal was at work there: grab the nearest low level city employee and make him/her the Fall Guy, blame the whole thing on that person and proclaim victory over ineptitude.

That was in 1992, still early on in daley's reign of terror here. No more passing off of fuck ups now on a previous administration. Anything wrong in the city now sits squarely on daley's doorstep.

CTA has problems? Blame Huberman and the short corrupt cock sucker whp put him there. Or perhaps Honest Frank Kruesi.

The place is indeed falling apart. Deferred maintained is taking it's toll. Any department heads not related by blood to 42 short might want to look for some cover as more Fall guys will be needed.

Memo to Department Heads: Look around a the next mayoral staff meeting; if you cannot spot the next Fall Guy in 5 seconds flat, you are the next Fall Guy.

And when something serious DOES happen, Daley will once again try and blame the CPD being "greedy" in demanding raises just as every other city entity has gotten or granted themselves.

I can tell that there is an election coming up, all around the 23rd ward all of the collapsing man hole and catch basins are being repaired, a water leak at 57 and Austin was fixed within days of it showing up and even the potholes are being filled right away, I bet it stops after the election

This is a problem throughout America. America is B-R-O-K-E.

28 years of spending beyond our means. And now we are so broke that our country is falling apart. Over Christmas I went to New York and God are their roads awful. I also noticed some sewer openings were sunken in. And there were reports of the Brooklyn bridge, Lincoln tunnel, etc... falling apart.

All the so called "government stimulus" is a farce. The government is hoping and praying that by throwing around big numbers, they can get the economy moving again. At the same time, ask any local government bureaucrat if they have seen this so called stimulus money? No is their answer.

The L trains have been dropping shit for a hundred years +. It happens all the time. Walk north-south under the tracks in the HQ west lot and you will see plenty of head-busting nuts and bolts and other hardware.

The answer is simple. Just don't be under no L tracks when the shit falls. Nothing new here. Nothing to see. Move on people.

America is B-R-O-K-E continued.

We as a nation are slowly selling off our assets. The city sold of parking meters. Soon they may consider selling off our water system. The cost of future infrastructure improvements is downright mind boggling. And we don't have money to pay for it! So the only solution is to sell the asset off and let a private company do it and then they can pass the bill to the people.

We spend more than we earn and then think somehow we can defy this basic economic law.

The bridge money came out of a different allocation. (The best part is that they now plan to remove the bridge entirely.)

It was originally built to accommodate the extra Riverview traffic and take the heat off the intersection of Belmont and Western, but opened up the year Riverview closed (1967). It was basically obsolete when it opened.

Infrastructure repairs are neglected EVERYWHERE. Look at Altanta right now, with the freeze down there...water mains bursting everywhere, streets look like rivers, people without running water in their homes...taxes will
skyrocket later this year to pay for all that.

The bridge is a wreck and large chunks of concrete fall of regularly. It has been slated for demolition for a couple of years. but of course it must repaved by an outfit asphalt contractor just prior to demolition. Then daley will dump some schlub who answers phones for not alerting him that the bridge they just paid to repave was also about to be demolished.

The Chicago Way.

CTA and I am sure many city departments have layed off many of the actual mechanics and hired/promoted others to management positions. We all know that managers don't do any work. Thanks Richie!!

But look on the bright side folks, we have a contract company that plants plenty of flowers to make the streets look pretty and when you flatten your tires on those potholes at least you will have a nice view.

Someone should check out the gravity problem in the 001st district! A minority contractor problem if I have ever seen one. The building is sinking, some walls and floors are totally separated! Bricks are separated in the wall so far that you can look thru them to the next room. A lot of doors cannot open and close. I am waiting for the roll call room to end up on the first level!
