Welcome 4-and-2!

Today begins the 4-on-2-off schedule. Actually, it began almost three hours ago with the midnight crew starting early.

We're sure there will be kinks to work out, the car schedule is like something out of a Three Stooges episode and the start times will require some adjustment, but all in all, we'll be glad to see the end of the six-in-a-row schedule.

Open post in the meantime.

The car schedule is a nightmare, written by a bunch of policy-dweebs who've never worked a beat car. You'll never have 'your' car two days in a row and now they're full of food bags and never get gassed or washed.

Guys, remember, even though you won't drive the same car every day anymore... you've GOT to check oil and fluids on the cars when you gas up. Now more than ever before.

General orders require it and if you blow the engine, it's on YOU. And motor maintenance will hang you out to dry in about half a heartbeat. CHECK the OIL, especially in the trucks. They burn through oil almost as fast as they burn through gas.

This car rotation thing is just too wierd. But i'm definitely looking forward to only a 4 day work week. Should've gotten rid of the 6th day a long long time ago. Oddly enough every CR i got was from an incident on my 6th day. Maybe my patience was worn thin by then....

It's called tax fraud, aka, "I'm tired of paying to support all the lazy, non-working MFers out there who think society "owes" them because of some BS reason or another from the past".

Unless you enjoy working to support the slackers of the world, find out what your tax guy isn't doing that the other tax guys are!

Hire a CPA, who has something to lose and can give you tax planning. You get what you pay for. Others that get 3 to 4 times probably don't sleep good at night.

Do you own a home? If so you can itemize (your interest and property taxes would get you over the standard deduction, plus any child credits) but if you don't it is very hard to get over and above the standard deduction. There have been some that claim to get over the standard deduction w/o owning a home and I find that impossible without cooking the books so to speak. Remember you have to be able to prove what you are writing off if you ever get audited. What you should try to do is never owe or get a refund. Change your withholdings to maximize your pay check. You are basically giving the fed an interest free loan by getting a refund either way. I know some people like getting the refund because they can't save on their own, but wouldn't you rather have the extra money available to you each check. You can change your W-4 when ever you want. If I was getting back $8000 grand a year I would change my withholding to compensate for that, it $333 more per pay check. Hope this helps. Plus use a CPA versus a tax preparer....you will get better advise.

The main question is do you have a home mortgage? If you do and you are getting that amount back, you are getting f*cked big time. If you dont, then you wont get a larger refund but that still seems a little low.

Off topic. While I am sick of reading all the complaining from the 17th district that is what this blog is for, blowing off steam.I also would like to say to all the officers who think they are overworked and underpaid and the "real police" because they work in 7(hell on earth) 15,3,6, ect, at some point that is your choice. You are no better than any other complainer and we all have many reasons to complain. Personally I like working in busy districts because the work day passes quickly not because it reassures me of my worth. I also like working the street but have no problem with the officers who work the desk. They are needed and that is a job I am ill suited for. Me telling John Q Johnson that the next time he bothers me for BS I will take his phone and beat him with it, would not fly with the desk Sgt.
I own 2 homes have 2 28 day furloughs, plenty of ot, tons of great stories and a pension awaiting me. You are as happy as you want to be in this life. Stay frosty.

Regarding the post warning about being responsible for checking the fluids in the vehicles...

BULLSHIT. While it's true the G.O.'s say we're responsible, THE DEPARTMENT HAS NEVER TRAINED ME TO CHECK OIL, WASHER FLUID, ETC. Therefore, if and when (when is more likely given the piss-poor condition and mileage on our cars) a motor locks-up in your Crown Vic, you have the best affirmative defense available. "Hell, I even have to stop by my mechanic to check for proper tire inflation on my personal car" will be part of my To-From. Some coppers out South used this defense at my urging after filling the new diesel wagon with regular unleaded gasoline.

Until they make you (at the VERY least) watch a streaming video in roll call AND SIGN-OFF ACKNOWLEDGING PROFICIENCY IN CHECKING FLUIDS, refuse to play mechanic for the City. Oh?...that horrific metal-on-metal grinding? All that smoke pouring out of the tailpipe? I have no clue what that is, Sarge...I'M NOT A MECHANIC.

We already have too many things for which we're responsible. We have to sign off acknowledging all kinds of bullshit a few times a year that makes us culpable in same way, shape or form when something doesn't go quite the way the department demands. Why in the Hell should you or I be left holding the bag when an engine goes on a car with 120,000-plus, beaten on miles? The same car which has been neglected since shortly after it joined the fleet. The same car which probably has had some kind of major engine work just to keep it barely running. The same car that should've been downed for officer safety for any number of reasons (bad brakes, bald tires, shitty alignment, non-working windows & door handles/locks just to name a few) a long time ago. You don't have to be a mechanic to know there's a problem when your squad won't stop or steer properly.

I don't know about you, but I've had enough of being liable for things that are completely out of my control. Quit being a patsy painting yourself into corners for this thankless job.

"...conservatives in the black community."

They're out there, don't be fooled by jesse, sharpton, meeks et al. Those fools preach everything except responsibility, hard work, education, delayed gratification and doing right by the next generation. They've become very wealthy pandering to the pinkie lib-tards, the resolute non-contributors and dead-enders by preaching victimology instead of being active and getting out on the corners kicking the young bucks in the ass instead of whining to Barry for a federal investigation (DOJ & the Courts have their place but of late have become the last refuge of first resort for these scoundrels) when some of these throw-aways get a justifiable & well deserved hair combing by the Police. BTW, the law abiding citizens (regardless of origin) really wish the Police were free and able to handle street business the way it really SHOULD be handled. They would stand up and applaud if were safe to do so.

(Just not quite at that point yet, it would be a great thing though.)

If you want to know about being up against it and having tough time yet being able to carve out a niche, get to know some of the old people on the beat. They'll be happy to tell you the real score if you're honest and respectful. There are no old time black coppers left. (ca. 1940's to 1965-ish) They can tell you stories about being pioneers on the job that would make you cry. But they hung tough and gave a good account of themselves and were overwhelmingly fabulous coppers to boot.

More insight, savvy and clear-eyed common sense (ok, conservatism if you must) in the black community than you think but they're outnumbered by the shrill shills.

...The POTUS is hollow and has no substance to call his own. An artificial being created by and foisted on the U.S. by Daley Inc. He has nothing in common with the fools running around on election night. They just don't know it yet but they've served their purpose.

For 30 years I worked 6 on 2 off for 5 weeks before getting 2 three day week ends and I survived like so many others; but it was fuckin' hard.

The 4/2 will work out very well. A piece of advice for those missing their 3 days week ends: use elective time, i.e. work three off three and it will only cost you 8.5 hours. Good luck, brothers.

ATTENTION!!! This may be old news, but I just found out that the SGT.'s don't have to burn. 1/2 hour when taking a baby furlough day, but we do. Under the 4-2 their baby furlough days are an entire day off. How the hell is that fair? The SGT.'s always have a "me too clause" when it comes to things we get, but I guess it doesn't go both ways. What BS!! The Sgt's only difference between us and them should be the pay and everthing else should be the same. They get a nice raise, better duty availability, an extra 45 mins a day and 25 working furlough days. The perks for 4-2 should be the same for all who are in it. FOP needs to fix this and grievences should be filed.

Six and three is the absolute best. I've worked six and two, five and two, four and two and six and three. I know the goal has been to eliminate the sixth day but when you have three days off each week, it's like getting a baby furo every week. Tack on an extra day on the front or end of your work week and man it's nice. I guarantee you a year from now after seeing how much T/D we will be burning now, we will be regretting not demanding the six and three schedule. We payed right into the cities hand.

I don't know why cops have to be so negative. The 4 and 2 just started and right off the bat, when I got into the locker room there was constant negativity. "Oh this fucking sucks, now I can't take my nap before I come to work", "Jody sucks", "this aint gonna work", "I hate starting at 2100 hours", etc...

Thank God that awful six in a row work schedule is gone. And remember this; despite all of the issues we have, we still have a great job, with good pay (if you are the one complaining of not having enough money then you should learn how to manage your personal finances), awesome vacation time, a great brotherhood and tremendous job security (just look at the state of our economy).

Two years ago, H and R Block was sued my multiple clients because they were playing fast and loose with the rules and getting their clients a lot of money back. Once the IRS found out, they audited those clients and they had to pay through the nose, the ass and any other cavity the IRS could find.

I am a PO wife with an accounting degree and you are absolutely correct. It doesn't matter who prepares your taxes, ultimately you are responsible for the truthfulness of your tax return. Many of these tax services want your business so bad they will go into gray areas to get you the biggest refund. If you get audited, the burden is on you. If it seems too good to be true it probably is.

I am not a Sgt. but only a Detective. That being said, why would you complain about what the sergeants get. IT DOES NOT COME OUT OF YOUR POCKET. It would be a better idea to get a "me clause" like they do if you like the perk. You can also study hard and pass the sergeant's test or call your china man for the bump.

I am tired of people complaining about what other people get. Specially, when it is not detrimental to themselves.

The overlap benefits the p/o's not the city. You sit around waiting on a car, that is less time you have to deal with the b.s. on the street.
The 10 hour day is the best thing ever invented, to bad the fop and the city wouldn't listen to several proposals that would make the 10hr day work in patrol, but as usual they know best.

OT----BUT IMPORTANT

I just got off the phone w/Bill Cozzi. He is understandably depressed, so keep the cards and letters going to him.

He wants everyone who wrote or sent a card to him that he will write back--but he only has limited access to the typewriter in the library so he asks for your patience.

He said there was not even a Catholic Christmas mass, but plenty of Muslim chances to worship.

Make no mistake about it, when J-Fed screwed Bill over, he screwed us all. Please remember him in your prayers and drop him a line if you can.

Thanks.......

Moron,

Mark Donahue called j-fed and had a face to face with him and stated, in effect, let's get rolling on this alternate work schedule thing. fortunately j-fed agreed and made it happen.

FOP had everything to do with this new work schedule. Donahue got j-fed to commit to making it happen in 2010. j-fed, to his credit, kept his word on that one.

But believe this, FOP worked very hard to make this happen. I saw first hand some of the hard work that FOP put into this over a bunch of years.

ok anybody have the beat tag thing figured out yet? What do the 3rd and 1st watch desk crew do between 2000 and 2230 hours? they over lap

The 3rd watch desk, and early cars overlap. Early 3rd watch beat cars start at 1400, midnights at 2100. This is supposed to ease backlogs when the highest amount of call occur.

When you take the car, you are responsible for inspecting it and verifying that all damage is accounted for.

The GO has always said that the vehicle operator is responsible for checking the fluids.

Don't know how to check oil? Have your mechanic check your tire pressures??

What are you going to say if they ask for receipts????

To THE REVOLVER POLICE:

Back before the 28 day periods, when the year consisted of 12 months, the watches changed on the 1st of every month. When new on the job most people tried to take a furlough in a 31 day month that was one of their midnights. You only got 20 days of furlough, but with days off and time due you could take the entire month. I used to have no trouble getting a January furlough. Sucked big time.

An old Sargeant I knew told me that when he came on the job they worked 6 days on and 1 day off. When I told him that he probably did not want to take that one day off he only smiled. I wonder why?

becasue thats less than 40 hrs a week 5-2 is 40 hrs a week"

Hey nitwit. 4-2 work week IS a 5 day work week. There are 7 days in a week. Your 1st day back is your 5th day out of 7. So really 9 X 5 IS 45 hour work week. A 40 hour work week would be 5 days X 8 hours.

I gotta take issue with this...correct, it's not my car BUT, when I'm in that car every day, and I make sure not to eat in it, spill in it, get it washed when it needs it, fill it w/ gas, make sure the fluids are up to levels, and not trash the thing, and the other people on the other 2 watches who use it also feel the same way about taking care of the car that we have to ride in for hours at a time, yeah, we want "our" car. I hate when I have to get in a car and clean out someone else's coffee cups, food wrappers/bags, or have to deal with cigarette butts/ashes, sticky floors, smells of an ungodly nature, greasy steering wheels, or the inside of windshields that have more dirt on them than the outside, not to mention when the previous watch leaves the car on "E" for you too. Just wait til you forget something in a car (sunglasses, flashlight, etc...) and you can't track it down.

The overlap benefits the p/o's not the city. You sit around waiting on a car, that is less time you have to deal with the b.s. on the street.

A CPA is not a tax specialist. Believe it or not, H & R Block, though expensive, will milk the return for all it's worth. They have software that the FEDs use. It's a matter of red flags on your return. How much you get back depends on your status. Most "tax guys" don't take your deductions to the limit- I was a tax guy for 8 years and I go to H&R Block, they got me and my wife back $10,000 for the past three years. Are you single or married with no kids? Working several jobs? Living in an apartment instead of a house? House, kids, etc. give tax deductions. (I know, not fair to singles, but that's the tax law.) Extra jobs = tax bracket differences. Check your withholding. Are you in deferred comp? That's pretax and lowers your taxable income. Besides - getting $ back at the end of the year means you've given the govt an interest-free loan for the 12 previous months.

1/10/2010 12:59:00 PM

Yeah FOP.
Thanks for saving me the cost of driving to work 52 extra days a year. That sucks too that I'm off those days too. The extra two hours at work eats into my beatoff time and my soaps(too fucking cheap to buy a DVR). How about a real schedule. I propose, since we have to work 2080hrs a year... and there is 13 periods a year with 28 days contained in each period(160hrs per 28days). That we work 5.7 hours a day every day. This way I can drive to work everyday, wasting as much gas as possible. Maximize my beatoff time and side job potential(don't ask it makes sense in my hamster wheel driven brain). The best perk of all is I can bitch about being at work everyday.

w/ the 6-3 you still end up working less hours than the 4-2 due the math, and you end up with 3 more days day off than the 4-2 in a calender year. your off on the weekends, pratically every other week and find yourself burning less time for family. the 4-2 does not, you will not see a weekend until your 6 week. which is what your mayor wants, beacause for you, that means you have to burn those precious comp time hours. the mayor always has a reason for his maddnessss. to save money. the key to working the 6 day is that extra day off.

What BS!! The Sgt's only difference between us and them should be the pay and everthing else should be the same. They get a nice raise, better duty availability, an extra 45 mins a day and 25 working furlough days. The perks for 4-2 should be the same for all who are in it. To the 10 Jan 4:21 pm poster:
You hit the nail right on the head. The house mouses and thinktank members from headquarters have absolutely no clue how things operate at the watch/district level. How could you possibly think it's logical to overlap the 3rd and 1st watch desk and lockup crews by 2 hours! Newsflash to these policy writers there is only one desk and one lockup so why double staff them for 2 hours? If you have 2 desk sgt.'s during this ridiculous overlap then which desk sgt is actually in charge the 3rd watch sgt or the 1 st watch sgt.? A little common sense would have gone a long way here. Then again common sense is a very scarce commodity at headquarters.

TAX ADVISE FOR FREE

As a CPA, who was an enrolled agent prior to that, who has 15+ years on the job, I must say you need to be careful enough to use someone who is recognized by the IRS as able to testify in Tax Court in regards to the preparation of your return. There are 3 certifications to testify in tax court: 1) CPA, 2) Attorney, 3) Enrolled agent. These people have something to lose and you have the legal defense of "mistake of fact" on your side, also they carry malpractice insurance. Any preparer that tells you police can deduct lunch and a myriad of other gambits is just plain wrong, tell them to show you the IRS rule or ruling that allows this and if it is from the 20's or 30's there have been many ruling since. This all being said if I prepare anything for police customers I have them fill out a three page questionnaire and sign to attest to truthfulness. I have been burned by omissions and incorrect information (I would never call a policeman a liar) which resulted in audits in the past, always being able to prove my actions. Just be careful interest and penalties will follow for using a hack (like in 014, who got 20+ audited one year.) Don't shop for the biggest refund, shop for the planning advice to minimize your tax liability on your next return. The Tax Guy

The way this will work best for districts is simple, they must plan on using the half hour extra to have roll call and radio and car assignment etc.

Then the oncoming watch goes to the ramp or parking lot and makes face to face relief with the watch coming off, the cars don't need to be down more than a minute.

No wasted time, no cluster fuck overlap, no cars down, no need to even shut them off, no entire roll call down for 30-45 minutes. Result is more cars up for longer.

Think of a NASCAR tire change, except it is a driver change. In theory at least.

1/10/2010 12:31:00 AM

While all of this is true, remember you are getting paid by the HOUR, not the job. If your extra 1/2 hour a day is spent caring for your 'vehicle of the day', so be it. See, just make it work for you :)

Hey nitwit. 4-2 work week IS a 5 day work week. There are 7 days in a week. Your 1st day back is your 5th day out of 7. So really 9 X 5 IS 45 hour work week. A 40 hour work week would be 5 days X 8 hours.

1/11/2010 01:13:00 AM
Um, yes, but you are WORKING 8.5 hours, not 9, so it is a 42 1/2 hour week, not 45 hour week.

everyone in units that do not have a new schedule should email FOP and demand that they represent all bargaining members equally!!!!! Please someone be the first to file that grievence!!!!! This is complete bullshit.

1/11/2010 03:28:00 AM

How about you file that "grievance" first? Why must you rely on others??

The entire membership of the FOP loses if Mike Shields doesn't run. Mike, please run. Its there for the asking. You will win in a landslide.

Unit's 377 and 477 (Evidence Technicians) are filing a mass grievance for being left out of the 4-2 work schedule, or the ten hour schedule like Area 2 Det. Sorry FOP, but thanks for fucking us out of the deal. And a class of five starting with about 8 retiring, real smart. One job at a time, with a long wait for an ET from now on.

WHOS THE IDIOT THAT IS TELLING OFFICERS TO CHECK THEIR OWN OIL?

HEY NUMB NUTT!!! IF YOU LOOK AT THE OIL GUAGE JUST LIKE THE GAS AND TEMPERATURE GUAGES, IT WILL TELL YOU IF YOUR LOW, EMPTY OR HAVE A PROBLEM!!!

THE IDIOT GUAGES WILL LIGHT UP!!!!!!

Your logic is faulty, based on a bad premise. The idiot lights do NOT always read true. And, shockingly, sometimes those dash lights simply burn out.

And, guess what? You're STILL liable for fluid levels, whether they indicated correctly or not.

And if someone files this grievance, what article of the contract will you cite has been violated?

Have any of you people screaming so loudly now gone to any of the General Meetings (FOP) where it was explained why some units were not given the 4-2 by the CITY and what the FOP is doing to include all units citywide in one form or another of alternate work schedule?

But why would anyone want to complicate the issue with facts? Better to rant on a blog and show your ignorance. ("this is complete bullshit!") Very eloquent. Ignorant too but what the hell, blame everything on FOP, it is easy. And never ever give the FOP any credit.

The word you want is GAUGE, not guage. And you're, not 'your'.

If only there were an idiot light for people who bitch, but can't spell.

Yours would light up, for sure.

I Wonder who is the clout moron boss that switched the times all around so a whole 1st watch can sit around for s couple of hours with mo cars. I mean really nice move genius!
All you had to do was move all start times up a 1/2 hour. And they all could do face to face relief at the radio room. But no let's start 1st watch 2 hours early and have color coded car sheets. And still have no cars till 3rd watch gets off. JACKASS!!!!! Perfect example of a clout boss in over his/her head!

To the IDIOT that said you dont need to check the oil on these cars- did you ever look at the sign at the pumps? Driver is responsible, that is YOU.Read the GO's , if an inspector sees you at the pumps and you dont check it you can be gigged. ALSO do you really trust the guages in these cars? nothing else works properly so why should they?
