About Time

With Shortshanks grubbing for every dime he can find, this was a long time coming:
  • Cook County Traffic Court in Chicago may stop dismissing speeding tickets based on laser gun readings because a judge ruled Wednesday that lidar speed detectors were scientifically admissible in the court.

The court did not conduct its own hearing on the matter as planned. Instead, the judge determined that a recent Illinois Appellate Court ruling upholding the admissibility of lidar detectors would apply in the Cook County case.
The City is still going to go through a Frye hearing on its own just in case. But it's still hard to believe Shortshanks has been giving up this revenue stream for so long.

Being an old traffic man I can tell you that the key to a successful prosecution when using a speed-monitoring device is to make the device a non-issue. I can accurately estimate the speed of a moving automobile with my naked eye. I would testify that the device only verified what my observation skills told me and my skills were acquired by years of observing moving traffic. Therefore, my expertise becomes the critical factor of my testimony not the accuracy of the device.

No rocket science here, just some common sense.

Now if we could just get Cook County Judges to stop dismissing cases all together it may be a safer place to live. Saw an illegal in 48, who was in possession of a forged Drivers License and the Judge, (KULL) from some reason No Probable Causes it, even after the officer stated that the illegal made admissions to having it made.

All he had to do was threaten the pooch judge with not being slated and tell the committeemen/organization guys not to accept the judges contributions, period. Problem fucking solved.

Next!

There are tens of thousands of
attorneys in Cook County who would love to retire from the daily grind and hustle of praying that a POS with some money walks through the door. They all wanna put on the robes, retire, and earn a pension.

Granted it's been a long time, but correct me if I'm wrong, aren’t speeding tickets written with the State charge, which means the State gets the fine?

Stay safe, retirement is great.

the city has lost revenue from a legit source. Nobody gets sandbagged, no race place into it and all are 100% good traffic stops. If you or I decide to give the motorist a pass, so be it.

I've been stopping people with the Lidar and just writing the traffic study card, I take 10 minutes of their time, they get the aggravation of the stop, I generate a valuable contact card, citizen gets their license back, daley gets fucked out of his revenue, I look like I am really doing something, everyone goes home happy.

Ah yes, a good old traffic guy can tell who is going $20 over the speed limit and who is not.

Please take a look at the revenue numbers generated by the Traffic Division, 1960 to 1970. That revenue came from two sources, parking meter enforcement and accident and traffic enforcement. I suggest if CPD had a full-fledged Traffic Division, you would have a contract, the City budget would not be an issue. At one time, six "movers" per shift was the "goal" or if you couldn't comply, about ten per-cent were moved out of Traffic. pelikannest@yahoo.com
