School Assessment
It has been stated that the Turn-Around Team at Fenger High School already judges itself a success. On October 30th at Orr High School, Mayor Daley himself insisted, “Fenger has a very good principal and it’s a very good school” just a month after Derrion Albert’s murder and even while Fenger has been mired in violence, corruption and mismanagement.
But our administration and city leadership judge it as a success because it has achieved compliance from its staff members. Not one of us has spoken out in the midst of the chaos and tragedy that have occurred and, so it is said, there is a feeling of victory over Fenger. No one has spoken: not upon the death of a student, which reached the public with full force, or upon the small deaths that are experienced daily within our silent walls.

ahhh Fenger....remember THAT blog?
WELCOME TO CHICAGO POLITICS!CRIME IS DOWN,PROMOTIONS ARE ALL FAIR AND ITS ALL LEGIT!!NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!!ITS ALL RIGGED AND SMOKE AND MIRRORS!!NO DOUBT ABOUT IT,AND ILL GO TO MY GRAVE KNOWING IT!!
from CPS.EDU
Fenger is a unique Chicago public high school participating in both High School Transformation as well as the Small Learning Communities Initiative. Fenger Academy is committed to raising the bar.
As of 2008-2009, there were 1190 students enrolled at Fenger HS. 94.5% were low income Students. 18.9% were Special Education Students. 0.1% were Limited English Learners.
As of 2008-2009, the largest demographic at Fenger HS was Black. As of that time, this demographic made up 99.4% of the student population. The second greatest demographic was White at 0.3%.
Students Exceeding PSAE State standards 2008: 0%
Read that again. ZERO F-ING PERCENT! ZERO. None. Not one. 1190 students. one thousand one hundred ninty kids and not ONE of them and beat some B.S. standardized test.
WTF?!
I read the article. Lots of it was dumb, even criticized the police working inside to quell lunchroom disturbances.
One shouldn't walk away after reading this article believing that the writer has summed up the
efforts of Fenger in a nutshell.
While it's too early for the new group runing things to pat themselves on the back, things do seem to be quieter there now than they have been in the previous year. Could the weather have a lot to do with that? Very well could be. But who's complaining?
Fenger, Marshall, Orr, and Crane are some of the worst schools, and yes, they are 99% black, if not completely black. As far as I'm concerned, I have no guilt over being white and I think the black community can "turnaround" their own schools. I wash my hands of them, except for my tax dollars they steal from me.
read the article.
twice.
couldn't find anything that addressed the problem of the 'students' being, in sufficient percentage to be the source of said problem, ignorant, undisciplined, self centered animals, lacking in even a 2 year-old's level of self control.
with all this article contained about what wasn't being done 'for' the 'students', nowhere was there to be found any mention of what these 'students' are failing to do for themselves.
and the parts about how responses, to the regular occurrences of disruptive and violent 'student' misbehavior, are described as being 'heavy-handed' just made me chuckle.
what does the writer of this article want, for all the little babies to be handed pacifiers with their detention slips?
as for the complaint about the year-long busing being ended, just how long is it supposed to take for 'students' to bring a desire to learn with them to school? rather than a desire to fuck off, fuck up and generally fuck over themselves and everyone else within 100 feet of their own asses?
here's an especially amusing paragraph;
"The social studies department paid an outside vendor to produce four years worth of curriculum and only received the same curriculum for all four years, rearranged to be taught in a different order. To avoid the fact that many of our new staff are not certified in the area they are teaching, we have switched to general “Social Studies 1-4” so that we appear to be NCLB compliant. The first unit was on race, so we had a nearly all white group of inexperienced teachers teaching Fenger students about the mechanics of race with predictable results."
ah, the difficulties of communicating with the negro youths.
maybe it's the fault of all that rap music.....

and the mayor keeps wasting more of our tax dollars building more of these "pits"! It is easy to spend everyone elses money right mayor?

The only reason they're quieter @ fenger is because everyday this useless city wastes a shitload of money by sending 6-TRU cars, 4-022 marked cars, about 2 to 3 unmarked cars and a f#@%kin Helicopter. TWELVE CARS @ ONE SCHOOL!!! It just goes to show you how messed up the city is, and how the animals act. I wonder why we don't send all these cars to predominately white schools? SAVAGES!!
whoever wrote the linked article has bought in to the concept that the students themselves have no personal obligation to behave in a civilized manner.
truly link card mentality.
a total voucher system of publicly funding education, with a preset amount based strictly on age of minor aged student, regardless of said student's economic condition, would restore the responsibility for education to where it belongs, on the student and the student's family.
I don't know if you will put something like this on your site.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET!
I'm not impressed with the writing. It was rambling, annoying and blamed everyone else for the problems at Fenger. Parents and students have to take some blame.
Sounds more like a worthless teacher venting because they were fired. Something that can only happen at these schools. The unions are powerless there and a lot of the teachers that were let go want some form of revenge. I'd take that story with a grain of salt.
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS WITH MAYOR DALEY (OCT. 30, 2009)
"I'm not an educator, sir, so I'm hoping you can explain something to me.
How did you manage to keep a straight face yesterday, when you told members of the Chicago media that Fenger High School is "a very good school"?
Let me come at it this way. If you were raising teenagers in the city, would you enroll them at Fenger today? Are you actively encouraging any of your teenage nieces and nephews to consider Fenger for their high school years? Mr. Mayor, could you, in your wildest dreams, imagine putting any kid that you and your wife know and love on a CTA bus each day to attend Fenger during the 2009-10 school year?"
I didn't think so. And we both know why that's the case."

The new principal at Fenger is killing crime statistics by not reporting stuff. She is a big time police hater. When we do respond there because of the children rioting (usually once a week), she hides in the office instead of directing her security guards on what to do. Afterward, she emerges and criticizes what the police did in her absence.
Her favorite line is "Why do you have to lock them up? It's all over." Or better yet, some kid is walking by in the hallway, and she tells the school officers to lock him up, without saying why or what they did. Needless to say, if she doesn't sign the complaint, she doesn't get her way.
Did the writer of the essay even graduate high school?
I am no English major myself, but not once in the essay was the definition of a "Turnaround" provided: neither the CPS aspiration, nor the grim reality.
What exactly was the point of the essay, besides that the author is angry with the situation at Fenger?
How does the author try to write about CPS policy and end up rambling about white guilt?
Seriously, if this is the quality of writing from one of the teachers/administrators at Fenger -- then one of the school's problems has been identified. The preparation and academic skill level of the student body should also be scrutinized.
I didn't see that as a critique of the police but as pointing out the police shouldn't even be there as prison guards.
Instead of addressing root problems that may be uncomfortable for polititions to admit to, the police are used as hammers.
The admin then gets to "take the kids side" against the police when secretly when in reality they say "fuck 'em" under their breath too.
12 cars at Fenger?? That might be enough to do it. "It" being chaining the doors shut and setting the damned building on fire.
Fact is, by the time they get to HS, the students from that shithole environment are irrepairably damaged. We can either pay to warehouse them in prison for the rest of their miserable life or we can kill them. Or I guess we can continue to do what we're doing now, the worst possible choice, which is let them propagate their fucked up lifestyle and prey on those few who might become productive members of society. Leave it to Shitcago government to find the worst possible solution and then go at it 110%.
We all know that if it were'nt for the Old School Patrol Unit back in the day these Chicago School People & Political's would not be bragging about how they turned them around for the better.
Now this Rev Meeks/State-Rep wants to introduce leg. to take out the LSC so that they can have better control at the top.
I guess now that the school's are operating better and are safer because of the Police Unit's they now feel that they do not need anyone watching over them and want to run it thier way!!
None of this shit at Fenger or any other school would be a problem if the School Unit was still intact, but you know that they want to change things that work better for them and not us.
We clean up the School's, the Street's, this City, and they still don't get it, The Police are the front line to everything that now works making all these idiot's look good is all they care about, not you or your family means anything to them!
It's time to start heading to the poll's since voting them out or in is the only thing they understand!!
Please stay safe and take care.
CPD-old school
Don't blame the published version of the essay on the teacher. Newspaper editors often delete more than half of any submitted writing, usually deleting the half that would be helpful.
I dont blame the teacher for his opinion. He went to college and learned all about the liberal ways. By the time he graduated, he believed them strongly! He believed that he was going to make a differance. A few years at Fenger and..... He realized that the police cant help, he cant help, and the school cant help. He knows deep down that FOCUS ON THE FAMILY IDEALS, even though he hates them, is a good start.

read the comments....I would think the girl's parents have a case...especially with all the federal money going to CPS for their untrained security staff
Poorly written, disorganized, and hollow. This is done by a teacher. We all know what we all know.

And as a bonus 60-70 million more of "our money" being thrown at it! Could hire 1,000 officers but no the revs felons with clout on patrol would serve the animals better!
Harper H.S. is another turnaround failure. The principal kicked out 500 kids and sent them to Robeson, Hope, Englewood and Gage Park and now those schools have mob fights every week. It's no surprise that the principal at Fenger was the Co-Principal at Harper last year. I wonder what schools she'll transfer her misfits too.
