Bad Timing

Snow and bus service cuts? You can almost see the voter anger piling up like drifts in a blizzard:
  • Bus and train riders who encountered the CTA at far less than its best on the first weekday of major service cuts should prepare themselves to slog through snow during Tuesday's commute.

The CTA implemented a winter action plan Monday to ensure that bus motors start in the morning and that the fleet — downsized by almost 290 buses because of the service cuts — can get out of garages and storage yards and onto streets.
Only one of Tom's can save Shortshanks now - Tommy Skilling or Tommy Byrne. Who will it be?

Read the comments. Wow. assuming it's not machine employees getting a dollar a post, there is a MASSIVE anti-union movement growing. Not good for us.

One such example:

Fire all the union workers and hire non-union workers. There are plenty of available workers. And the new workers would have better attitudes. These union workers can't see that their union bosses are hurting their jobs in the short and long term. The CTA purposely picked high traffic routes to inconvenience the most riders as possible. It is basically their way of forcing higher fares and taxes on city residents to cover over paid union workers and underfunded pensions. The only solution is to fire them all. Unfortunately, since the Democrat party, both local, state and national, is in the back pocket of unions. Unions are destroying American jobs. They would be happy if taxpayers were taxes at 100% of income to cover their scam. The taxpayers already flushed billions of tax dollars to bailout the union for GM and Chrysler, two failed companies. Now the CTA is trying to shakedown Chicago. Fire them all!!!

They need MORE cuts! How many times have you seen a bus with just a couple of passengers on it? What a waste!

Cut the number of runs. instead of a bus going by every 10 minutes, make it every 15 or 20 minutes. Riders should just plan accordingly... or buy a car!

The CTA is an operation on par with third-world countries where you see goats and chickens on the buses.

Start by moving bus stops to 3 or 4 blocks apart. Very few systems have bus stops every city block. People need to walk more anyway for their health. Have the buses feed directly to el stations to get riders in to the loop.

There is no need for express buses going to the loop. ship the people to the el. then you can run express buses on routes like Ashland, Western, Cicero.

Better yet, leave Chicago.

I take the bus from North Michigan ave, and they were running every 10 minutes. Yesterday afternoon they were 45 minutes apart. This was in "rush hour". Not good

The person that put this in the paper is intentionally fanning the flames. The routes that had service hours cutback were under utalized or had NO riders during those hours. How many empty buses did you see riding down the street?

Public transportation is not a right! They were servicing areas that needed to be cut back. Instead of waiting 6 minutes for a bus, you wait 8. Big deal. The end of civilization? I don't thinks so. The end of entitlement more like it. It is a business afterall.

A lot of us who drive don't pay much attention to the busses or trains

BUT

If you have a member of your family who is disabled and cannot drive YOU KNOW BETTER.

They can least afford the fares !

They have to use them if they need food, jobs, to go anywhere!

The treatment they are getting from this city is abhorrent.

all while

The mayor Pee Wee Daley says let them call a chauffer !!!

It's not about the taxpater, never is.

If you are disabled or know some one who is... ask for a ride or drive them to the poll to vote Daley OUT next election.

Disabled Unite !

I wonder why its always the unions problem of the short falls of upper managements spending habits? Why is always the union to give up pay and other things that they have worked for? I haven't seen anything about if management is giving up their pay and if so, how much? Have you? How 'bout furlough days? How 'bout the fat at the top. Either way you look at it, asking your employees to give up some days off is not going to make 95 million dollars go away. Maybe the CTA should spend less. You know...if you have two dollars......YOU DON'T SPEND TEN!!! Its called common sense!

Hey Jerry it was union workers who made this COUNTRY go ask daddy.
Remember you get what you pay for. 14.00 dollar an hour traffic control. Can you honestly say they have better attitudes and control traffic better than the police. I think not!

Not true, the express Ashland bus route was cut. That bus is heavily used during the rush hours. Or was. Now it is gone. Why not save a real lot and sell the goddamn CTA? Se if someone else can make it work. Of course the fares would likely go up to around $4 a ride.

Fire all the union workers and hire non-union workers.

Another poster who is bashing unions that didnt say what he does (or doesn't) do for a living. Union labor is still cheaper than privatizing. Daley wanted to fire the union snow plow drivers and privatize them, but the only bid submitted came back MUCH more than keeping the union workforce. Daley is well aware of the costs of privatizing union jobs, that's why he has never threatened to replace union plumbers, electricians, etc. Look at the parking meter fiasco. Union workers obviously did a good job in maintaining those, now that it's private, they are not maintained and the parking rates are RISING. As for the CTA, they could not find enough bus drivers for the longest time, they had job fairs twice a year up until the recession hit. Heres a link:

http://www.transitchicago.com/news/default.aspx?ArticleId=2208

Nobody wants to drive a bus for a living, or they cant pass the background check or drug tests. Ignorant people who assume its 'easy' to drive a bus think people will just line up to drive a bus for 8 bucks an hour. Well, they couldn't find enough people to do it for 20+ an hour.
