Speaking of Furlough Days

Here's a nifty little site that shows which aldercreatures took furlough days, how many, and who didn't take any at all. A sample:
  • F. OLIVO (13th) - ZERO furlough days
  • J. THOMPSON (16th) - ZERO furlough days
  • B. REILLY (42nd) - ZERO furlough days
How many days are other city workers taking?

There are also a few comments that claim the aldercreatures who do take furlough days are only being charged 1/365th of their pay for those days and everyone else is being charged something along the lines of 1/260th. Does anyone have that link? It's supposed to be an out-of-town paper, maybe the New York Times making the claim.

Regardless, it's nice to see our elected officials sharing the pain...not.

UPDATE: Greatest Readers in the World!

Here's the link to the article we reference. It's just as suspected:
  • But even the elected leaders taking furlough days are not feeling the pain of the recession as deeply as rank-and-file workers. That is because the Daley administration gives aldermen a break by deducting their furlough days from a 365-day schedule. Clout pays off again.

Here is how the math works: If, for example, you are a snowplow driver, tree trimmer, secretary or other typical city worker, you have 261 work days a year. So each furlough day translates into a deduction of 1/261st from your yearly wages. Twenty-four unpaid days works out to a 9.2 percent pay cut.

The mayor, the clerk, the treasurer and Council members, however, give up 1/365th of their annual salary for each furlough day. So an elected official would be subject to only a 6.6 percent salary cut.

Nice job, if you can get it.

I actually think that the fact they didn't kiss fatso's ass is a good thing. The furlough day scam is a clear way for fatso to breach contracts....PLAIN and SIMPLE! I may be missing the point. I think if it's because they said "Screw Fatso" I'm a fan.

This is the link, although I dont know how true it is or if it has been altered. One of the reporters works for the trib or times or at least he use to. The scum mentioned did not take pay raises so they did not take furlough days.

Come on! Did anyone really think the aldercreatures would do that to themselves? Heck, they vote themselves huge raises and spend boat loads of money. Since when have they been for saving the city money? It's the chicago way.

Hey boys and girls, ladies and gents it's civilian lurker IrishPirate here.

Hope all is well or at least less bad in copville tonight.

Here is a link to the NYT story on the aldermaniac furloughs.

The New York Times, which I know is SCC's FAVORITE source of news, has an agreement with the "Chicago News Cooperative" to post stories on Fridays and Sundays on their website.

Here is the link for that. I suggest bookmarking it.

Sadly, their coverage is often better than the Tribune or Sun Times coverage. I long for the days of real newspapers. Give me a "Mirage Tavern" series on Daleyite corruption.

Now if you will excuse me I'm going to go back to crying and drinking because Scott Lee Cohen's hookers are better looking than mine.

The only furlough days (actually furlough HOURS now) that I'm concerned with are the ones incorporated in my 8A & 13B segments.

The aldercriminals that "took one for the team" by giving up furlough days have made, and will continue to make, any lost money up several times over in graft, bribes, special treatment, "gifts" and "donations".

The ones that didn't give up any furlough days are either legitimate and feel they're being unfairly asked to make concessions, or they're outright greedy motherfuckers.

My money's on greedy motherfuckers.

Aren't we subject to having our days off cancelled? Aren't we subject to a higher standard of behavior -- drinkning while off duty. You think that if we had to give back days, it would be at the rate of 1/365th of our pay. I highly doubt it.

Im a cop living in another state and enjoy reading your blog. Here in Maryland, we also have furlough days. The politicians who claim they are too important to take time off from their duties ARE EXPECTED to return their pay for those unused furlough days back into the government treasury. AND THEY DID.

When leadership doesn't take the same financial hits as the workers, morale and service are impacted. It creates a divisiveness that takes years, even decades to resolve.

Aldermen should lead by example and take all of their furlough days just like we have to.

I am not surprized though. The same lack of leadership exists not only in the goverment sector, but also in the private sector (bank execs taking bonuses after a gov't bailout) and even in the not for profit sector.

My girlfriend worked for a not for profit community center in Rogers Park (024) near Howard/Paulina where programs for the poor were cut, workers and managers were laid off and took pay cuts, but the Board of Directors gave the Executive Director a 20% pay raise. And the place receives city, state and federal grants!

Leaders need to act like leaders.

Aldermen and Alderwomen, do the right thing and lead by example.

Speaking of furloughs...as a timekeeper, here is something most of you don't know yet...as always if you are on the medical & it's your furlo time..as always, you are placed on furlo, BUT if a holiday falls during your furlo, you are then placed back on medical (for that one day) therefore you do NOT get the 8 hrs of holiday pay that you would get while on furlo, which you are NOW on!!! In effect 01 Jan 10. See how they just slide things past us? Where the hell is FOP?????

SO they are docked less for their furloguhs, 1/365th compared to 1/260th, and they still don't take them. THe city automatically takes my furlough pay if I don't submit the days, how about alderpeople?

And, man, does it get a LOT of miles on it for a brand-new car. Wonder how that happens. Then again, this is a part-time job for him, just like the aldermen.

It may interest you to know, SCC, that Daley himself had never taken an unpaid furlough day until a columnist at the Scum-Times put the question to him. Shortshanks response at the time? ' No one told me I needed to take one.' So it should come as no surprise to anyone that certain aldermen think the unpaid furlough day requests are for 'the little people,' when it's obvious that Daley felt the same way until he was exposed.

The person who commented that a one day suspension only takes 1/365 of your annual salary is correct. Only when the suspension is 30 days does the percentage change ever upward. The brass have been trying to change this as far back as 1983 that I recall. What is stopping them is the fact that the payroll computers cannot do this easily. Believe me, if they could find a way that would not take a ton of money they would do it!!
