CTA Cuts Today

  • Both CTA and union officials agreed that although they'll talk again in the next few days, it's too late to stop layoffs of more than 1,000 people and drastic service cuts Sunday.

[...] The union leaders are taking a "menu" of cost-cutting measures to their membership. It's the same menu that has been rejected by union members before -- an unappetizing selection of pay cuts and increased health costs.

[...] The $95 million in planned cuts will trim bus service by 18 percent and L service by 9 percent. Daley acknowledged that CTA unions made concessions in the past, but he said they have to dig deeper.
Are the aldercreatures returning their 6% yet? Or their staff the 5% pay raises? How about the teachers with their 4%-plus raises and track record of dismal failure? Or the tens of millions that always seem to pop up with astonishing frequency whenever Shortshanks needs a contract for a buddy, nephew or connected insider?

Personally, we're hoping for a walkout. The CTA might just break Daley.

I hope the Chicago Tribune does a story about that crack head, the one arrested approx 170 times, will have to wait just a little longer for a train!

Just raise the fares already, it's still the cheapest alternative if you dont have a car, deal with it....

Good! Maybe these service cuts will alleviate some of the instances where I encounter some homeless bust-out playing with his hammer on the train.

It's particularly unnerving to emerge from a dark stretch of tunnel only to observe that the dude directly across from you now has his hand wrapped around his junk when just moments earlier he didn't.

Kudos to the CTA union for not buckling under pressure (this time). Keep it up!

I hope the train and drivers unions asked the the CTA how many middle managers are to be cut? How many office people will be in the unemployment lines too?

They always cry poor, they always threaten cuts, then they always get more money....just where, exactly, does this money go, over and over? Could you imagine if we would have gotten the Olympics?

Of all the city function to sell of to a private enterprise the most obvious is the CTA. It is obvious that the City cannot run the CTA when the only solution to a financial crisis is to cut service and pack up and go home.

Sell the goddamn CTA and allow private enterprise to run it at a profit. If a daily fare needs to be $5.00 then so be it. Still cheaper than any other way. Cheap fares and top heavy management living opulently are the problem along with waste, mismanagement, corruption etc. The usual Chicago shit.

Does anyone know what Honest Frank Kruesi is doing now? He and Huberman helped make this mess. Ask them why it is this fucked up.

I hope the CTA goes out on strike over this and fucks daley to a standstill. It is so well deserved.

The service cuts are designed to provoke riders to begin driving. If they drive then they must park, and pay to park at that. The CTA president stated that 2/3 of the riders have alternate transportaion. Shortshanks wants his...ah...your money. He doesn't want to piss of the parking meter company.

Since the union refused to re-open their agreed upon contract, C.T.A. decides to cut service and employees.

The rumor mill says about 1,200 workers got pink slips this time and another 1,000 workers by next month.

Did any of the layoffs come from the TOP of the food chain or were they all from the bottom?

Me thinks they are too many chiefs and not enough Indians.....

Privatize the CTA ! Look at the problems generated when the mayor
sold-off the parking meters.
Now multiply those problems numerous times and you will see it
ain't pretty. The reason the CTA
came into being in 1947 was because
the Chicago Surface Lines and the
Chicago Rapid Transit was losing
money because of different companies operating various parts
of the system. Defferent fares,
routes, schedules, etc.
As fellow posters stated, the mayor
needs to relenquish more money to
support the CTA. He can find money
to support his cronies and their
ventures but the CTA must fend for
itself, and two million dollars a
year just ain't going to be enough.
And the CTA will never be able to
survive off farebox revenue alone.

First, I love public transit. Obviously I wish the CTA were cleaner, faster, nicer and more frequent -- but it is still a great deal.

However, instead of balancing the budget by whittling away from service, I wish the CTA would simply Shut Down Completely for however many days or weeks it took to get out of the red.

I would love to see how quickly government would react when every street/parking lot was gridlocked with cars and low-wage employees can't make it to work.

If nothing else, it would be interesting.

They are talking about a strike! "nothing like shutting shitcago down"! Hope they strike to watch and his criminal empire sweat bigtime! What a jag this idiot keeps giving away all "our money" to the same thieves and no one ever looks at him! Who else is getting the big payoff?

Just as a blizzard did in Bilandic, this debacle with CTA could be the nail that seals Daley's coffin. Many of the srevice cuts proposed will disproportionately affect many poor and low wage workers who rely soley on the CTA as their primary source of transportation. The loss of jobs by CTA's rank and file will do nothing to endear the Mayor to their workforce or their families who depend on them. Just as he has little to no support from rank and file city workers. It's all starting to add up. All that's needed is a credible candidate to run against Daley in the next election.

Like I said before, this is going to up the workload on the already shorthanded Police. Citizens waiting longer on the bus bench equals more time for the strongarm and stick up guys to do what they do best. I plan on driving to work. So much for reducing my carbon foot print.

Less frequent service? Cool - I get tired of sizing a victim up, just start to walk up on them and the damn traun pulls in.
I'm not a highly motivated worker, so a little more lead time to rob or rape is most appreciated.
Besides, I have asthma, take me to the hospital while I wait for my prints to clear.

I heard that the President of the Museum of Science and Industry makes $1 Million in salary a year.

With executive pay like that no wonder Chicago is going down the drain trying to pay for all these people.

I can imagine what the CTA management makes.

I do not spend any money in Chicago anymore. Management people are paid WAY too much.

CUT everybody's money - not just the bottom of the totem pole.

Let's not forget that Huberman blew a $150 million federal grant while at the CTA. He is wasting money at CPS, especially by pay B. McDonald a consultant salary of $150,000.

Shame on Daley for this last minute blitz against CTA. CTA union tried to negotiate for two straight weeks and the city didn't even answer their calls. This is Daley's last minute union bashing. Fuck him.

CTA has way too many managers. And they make a boatload of money. But know this for a fact; the days of having good pay and good benefits of us public employees are over.

And don't even expect a pension. There simply isn't enough money in our pension funds and the local government have no intention of funding it.

So if you never saved money for your retirement. Then you are screwed and have no one to blame but yourself.

That new CTA prez Rodriguez - whatta piece of work. Never trust a man who spends three to four hours a day in front of a mirror, grooming his beard hair-by-careful-hair -- and was that some sort of lower-lip jewelry we saw dangling, or was he merely drooling?

Looks like he's headed for the cover of GQ with all those zoomy "CTA" boutique accessories. CTA ball cap, CTA windbreaker/safety vest, CTA turtleneck shirt to continue the fashion point. CTA print Jockey shorts? Who knows.

Does he have cats too?

Bought a couple of new inner tubes for the bicycle yesterday...

Hey "cheapest alternative" and "Who Cares", you'll care and deal with it, when illness, old age or disability forces you to ride CTA.

Hey "$5", the fare could be $5 million dollars and that still wouldn't be enough.
