Odd Timing
Less than 24 hours after winning the nomination for Lt. Governor, all sorts of stories are coming out about nominee Scott Lee Cohen:
- Steroids;
- Prostitutes;
- Domestic Battery;
All sorts of stuff. It's almost like the media was sitting on this and suddenly had a golden opportunity. There's no plausible explanation that we can see that this wasn't vetted beforehand. A basic background check would have revealed the arrest, then everything else would have been just a matter of tracking down records.
Again, we should be glad Quinn has this millstone to drag around and we certainly hope Cohen continues to refuse to drop out of the race, but it just makes us wonder how low an opinion of Illinois citizens the media and democrats have in general if they could sit on this crap the entire time leading up to the election and then cover it as some "big surprise."

The Republicans insist they have a pulse in Illinois, so they had a unity breakfast on Wednesday after the primary elections. State Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard are separated by only a few hundred votes in their campaign for governor, and they're lawyering up.
Illinois Democrats thought they were also alive, but a Tribune story that broke late Wednesday, about the mysterious Scott Lee Cohen, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor known as "the Pawnbroker," might be a political body bag.
Tribune reporters David Heinzmann and Ray Long revealed details about Cohen's 2005 domestic battery arrest in which Cohen's then-girlfriend accused him of holding a knife to her throat. Court records show that the girlfriend was a p-rostitute.
Cohen is insisting it's all lies, and that he didn't know his live-in girlfriend was a h-ooker. She told him she worked as a "massage therapist," the Pawnbroker's spokesman said.

The media loves big surprises. It makes headlines, and garners attention. However, the media (especially in Chicago) are a joke. They are becoming more like tabloids with each passing week.

My guess is that it just went under the radar. The lieutenant governorship is a powerless office, and nobody pays much attention to it until something like this happens.

(AFAIK, McKenna was the only gubernatorial candidate on either side to have a designated "running mate".)
I suspect in the future there will be more attention paid to LG candidates. Who'd want to campaign like bejazus for a year, spend $millions, win the primary - and then discover you're joined at the hip to Mortimer Snerd?
What could be really funny is if in some future primary all the gubernatorial candidates get together in a joint statement denouncing some particular LG candidate.

Cohen is the litmus test of whether Illinois Democratic voters vote blindly, or consider the actual candidates before voting. Neither Quinn nor Cohen should be elected, based upon past records.
However, Brady is reportedly a "creationist", so I don't know whether a "rejector of science" should be elected governor. There something distasteful about electing a guy who reads the bible as literal truth. Hope Dillard makes it.

Ask not-ever-governor Adlai Stevenson about this strategy! It did not work in 1986. James R. Thompson beat him soundly.
And besides, Cohen was honest and upfront about all of this stuff months ago. He could have sealed his divorce records and expunged his record, but chose not to do so. This guy is dumb like a fox.

I voted for Cohen after phoning the Hynes' campaign and asking directly who they preferred to run with. They had no preference and Cohen, to his credit, was the only candidate who sent out literature in my NW side neighborhood.
I was planning to vote GOP anyway for the governor and senator in the fall. Glad that I helped out the GOP ticket inadvertently. I pulled a democrat ballot to vote against Stroger.
To the Brady bashers---he's reportedly Catholic and has served on a Wesleyan Board (Methodist). Both mainstream Christian religions from the old sod in Ireland/England/Scotland.
Hynes can't run in the general election after losing the primary. Election law prohibits this.

Quin stated at a news conference before the election that all of his Lt. Govenor running mates where honorable. Maybe he forgot about Ricky Hendon, convicted kidnapper and bank robber who was pardoned by another convict George Ryan. And the media still is not speaking out about Hendon and his Lt. Govenor aspirations, they did write about Hendons convictions a few years ago.
If he doesn't do what the machine demands, I see a suicide in his future. This guy really needs to watch his back and stay away from aspirin. They could really make him appear suicidal.
