City Inspectors Destroy Food
City health inspectors used bleach to destroy hundreds of pounds of frozen fruit puree and threw out other food in a West Town kitchen on Thursday night, citing not safety violations but a lack of proper licensing.
The fruit -- apples, plums, raspberries, pears, blueberries and peaches from local growers harvested and frozen last summer -- belonged to pastry chef Flora Lazar, who valued it at thousands of dollars.
Lazar had rented space for her business, Flora Confections, at Kitchen Chicago, a shared cooking facility for small artisan bakers, candymakers and caterers. A second business, the caterer Sunday Dinner Club, said it lost more than $1,000 in discarded cassoulet, granola bars and baking supplies.
- Lazar, who had planned to use the purees to make fruit gelees for Valentine's Day, tried to give the fruit to her son, but an inspector called in the Chicago Police Department to intervene. The bags of fruit were then slashed open and treated with bleach.

Well, what do you expect when you hire someone who has absolutely no experience in the field?
The owner will eventually sue the city, the city will drag the lawsuit out over months (if not years) and when they finally are found in the wrong and told to pay up, they will cry poor.
I've been called to scenes where a city inspector hasn't even shown up. On call back, the dispatcher tells me that the complainant (the inspector) is 5 minutes out and I'm told to wait.
19b and I leave.
10 minutes later there is a call for a supervisor. Inspector finally shows up and is outraged that I'm not there. I go back. Inspector wants to file a complaint against me. Sgt asked him why he wasn't there when I first arrived and he states that that is his usual routine; call and have the police waiting because HE IS BUSY and can't wait for us.
When asked why we were called out in the first place, inspector says that he does that IN CASE there is a problem. So this jag-off is calls the police to every scene he is at JUST IN CASE he has a problem with the person he came to see.
I'm guessing that it became a public safety issue when the owners of the disposed property pissed a bitch, and probably looked as if they were about to lynch the inspectors. Can you imagine? I can't wait to see them go to a tavern that's allowed it's liquor license to lapse a few days, and pour tens of thousands of dollars of booze and beer down the toilet.
THe Daley administration does whatever the hell it wants. He is running the city like Adolph Hitler. Maybe he should try exterminating the vermin that are killing our children instead of of picking on the little people. BTW- you runt MF'er- give us our contract and hire more police officers.

At a time when jobs are scarce and unemployment is epidemic it makes no sense for the government to destroy the inventory of a private business operating out of a licensed kitchen because the owner of the inventory did hot have her own separate license. The sensible thing would have been to test the food for safety and quality, and if safe, just prohibit its sale until the license, which was applied for and paid for, came through. As a result of the City's overreaction, this woman will probably be out of business and she and her employees will go on the dole instead of earning a living on their own. Now the State will have to pay for the owner and employees in the form of unemployment comp or welfare and the owner will likely sue the City and recover a judgment. No wonder employers are leaving Illinois in droves and no wonder our taxes are sky high.
Well, after many years of neglecting the health and safety standards in Chicago restaurants and in taking bribes to look the other way, the city health department seems to have swung the pendulum the other way and have become bullies. This baker had payed the money for a license and had brought her packaged and frozen food to a rental kitchen which had been inspected manytimes. Sad, very sad. The city put her out of business.

Small business does most of the employing of unskilled or lightly-skilled workers, rents more small properties, and is essential for keeping neighborhoods alive.
This drama queen approach by the city looks like it should be recreated in Hollywood--only for a mob revenge scene. Just stupid.
If I was the artisanal pastry cook,I would take this to every business magazine in the nation. Revenge cuts both ways--and a cook knows how to hold the knife (or in this case, puree the fruit).

Pick on a small little kitchen offering upscale? products, while at the same time in all the mexican neighborhoods there are literally hundreds of street vendors at any time offering unsealed vegetables, fruit and hot food, without any regard to sanitation proper storage,temperature or running water etc... Sounds like selective enforcement with possible racial overtones to me.

Wait a minute, the way I see it, the fruit was personal property and it wasn't even spoiled. How is it that some inspector can destroy personal property? Does this mean that when I run across an unlicensed motorist I can destroy his car? It would be fun no doubt but I think I might be held liable.
they did this about ten years ago to the corn and mayonaise carts in mexican neighborhoods. poured bleach in them, were heavy handed. another case of no envelope no cart. i'm not saying its okay to operate without a license, but the inspectors were trying to "send a message"

No one knows the circumstances why the inspector felt a need to dispose of the food, but I think we're all pretty familiar with Monday morning quarterbacking--maybe we should give the inspector the benefit of the doubt and hope his/her reasoning was valid. Anyone who's ever handled an "unlicensed" business selling liquor is also familiar with the inventory process. In today's day and age I would do everything by the book, and citing someone for selling food w/o a license "should" be proven by inventorying the evidence by counting, describing and destroying all perishable items on the premise.
Sounds the city should have kept the 18 year old fired-inspector after all. I bet he was the smartest inspector the city had.
When she sues the city he cops will be her witnesses.

I f there is cause to inventory perishable items per general order it is destroyed. We do not inventory it or give it back. I'm sue someone has tried to go after the city before, but it still is general operating procedure.
What is going on is that, as soon as the inspector leaves, they continue to sell and with no license how do you know it was not spoiled or ruined?

Now that I'm retired I'm going to write a book also called "Daley's Wacky Inspectors" I can't count the number of city Inspectors over the years I dealt with in any number of ways. He must tell his biggest contributors to hand over the relative that's a mental, drunk, or addict then he shoots them right into the inspector role. Maybe he figures the public won't mess with them. Jeez.
