- Over the past two years, I have worked hard to ensure that specialized assignments and opportunities are made available to all of our members and that they are filled with the most qualified and deserving applicants, based on open, fair and objective processes.
Few things are as damaging to morale and operational effectiveness as an environment where officers feel that their performance, work history and attitude are less important than who they know.
Fast forward to the Daily Bulletin dated 28 January (a summary):
- Basic Police Officer Leadership Course - The Chicago Police Department is proud to announce the creation of the Superintendent's Center for Leadership Development (CDL).
- Applications can be found online at e-Learning;
- Complete the essay questions;
- Submit the application, essays, resume, a statement from your doctor relating the Officer is able to perform physically demanding exercises to the Officers District Commander;
- The District Commander should review the package, and if approved, forward the package to: Chicago Police Training Academy, Attn Superintendents Leadership Academy.
And the punchline?
- Officers must have their packages forwarded to the Academy no later than 1 Feb 10, 0800 hours.
So they announce this big deal "leadership" class, one of those classes that in the past were only whispered around to certain special people. People related to other special people. People with clout.
And they post it in the Bulletin one single day, a Thursday. Let's see...posted on Thursday, exempts all work 3rd watch on Friday, front offices are closed Saturday and Sunday, application due in Monday morning with a doctor's clearance. We can't even get in to see our doctor next week and now we need a note in 3 days?

Check out the application for Sgt to the Terrorism Task Force, besides all of the hoops they want you to jump through, they require the Sgt to have a degree. Of course the perfect Sgt has already been picked but since when do you need a degree to go to a unit, to work with the feds????????

If there is strenuous physical activity involved, wouldn't it make a lot more sense for some kind of PT test? What good does it do to let a bunch of people into the program who are healthy but won't be able to complete it due to lack of appropriate conditioning?
Did anyone else watch that stupid shoe "Undercover Boss" right after the Superbowl. Here was a CEO of a billion dollar company that probably makes tens of millions of dollars a year and he could not perform the basic tasks he demands of his employees.

Why would I want to attend this leadership class when it's going to be taught by police officers from the academy? Someone should reconsider and maybe have someone over the rank of PO teaching these classes.

No one has been accepted because no one was allowed to apply, the application was never put up. They are trying to make things right, that's why it was taken down so quickly. I have been told that it will be put up again in a week or two, and everyone will have plenty of time apply. The time to complain will be after that process is complete, but you jumped the gun this time.

SCC, you're my hero but you got this one wrong. If you had taken the time to reach out via the contact info, like I did, you would have found that they are trying to do this thing the right way. No one has been accepted because no one was allowed to apply, the application was never put up. They are trying to make things right, that's why it was taken down so quickly. I have been told that it will be put up again in a week or two, and everyone will have plenty of time apply. The time to complain will be after that process is complete, but you jumped the gun this time.

The 30 Jan daily bullitan had a blurb asking if offs were interested in applying for news affairs and to submit resumes. Resumes were due by 01 feb. Yeah this is a real fair and open administration. It's all BS the chosen few are picked ahead of time and then the job is posted at the last second so they can pretend it was a fair process. JFRAUD is a joke yeah he is fair and open my ass.

They sent all the captains and lieutenants to this last year I hear. Was one wasted day of playing games like work together to move the bucket, count the paper plates in order, climb up the gym mats and get the box, etc. POs did teach it.
Anyone who goes to 35th st., the Leadership Room (academy) notice the colors of the door emblem. Blue and gold, so I hear. hmmm does that mean it is for the bosses or the P.O.'s. A P.O. would have made the color scheme blue and white....again they don't care about the blue shirts. Hey haven't they been teaching leadership at the academy for over a year. Check out eLearning, oh that was for supervisors. Bigger question, WHO will teach the course, Dept leaders?

If you haven't been to one of these classes then you don't exactly know what you are talking about. Some people, P.O.s are Master Psychologists and some are great Teachers. I have attended some of these classes, taught by P.O.s, all rank was left at the door. They did a great job and one of the things that was good was trading information and ideas because you could talk freely.
Ask yourself this, would you really feel comfortable listening to a whiteshirt or gold star dictating this. You might feel better listening to somebody a little closer to your level.
Stay safe, go to the classes with an open mind and you might enjoy them.

This has been much more than a JOB for many years. This has been home, and friends and family. I have never passed up an opportunity to learn something, sometimes on my own because it interested me. I haven't done badly, but I never got a "meritorious" promotion.

The Aldercreatures are afraid of any type of oversight. They won’t be able to back room deal in the same manner as their 28 convicted alumni. Off topic, but in a similar vane. The latest transfer order had an eight year veteran [giggle-giggle] transferred to the Asset Forfeiture Unit. I had a chance to review the Department’s educational listing by degrees earned and I couldn’t find this young man’s name anywhere in the report. However, I did see at least a couple of hundred PO’s with degrees in Business Administration, at least 100 with degrees in Finance, and quite a few with degrees in Financial Fraud. I began to wonder why JW and his obviously intelligent exempt staff didn’t choose one of these PO’s rather than one without the educational background in the field. Here’s the answer boys and girls. The PO has the last name as one of the member’s of the Superintendent’s Policy Group. The tall blonde one to be exact. So I figure he has to be the ideal person for the job because intellect obviously runs in the family, even by virtue of marriage. YEAH RIGHT!! And the Superintendent constantly vows “I will put the best person available in the position to get what has to be done – done.” Pardon the paraphrasing, but you get my point. Competency be dammed – clout pays off once again.
OT: Can anyone at 35th St confirm that the Weismobile got new all-terrain tires? They don't look like factory rubber!
Apparently spending $800-1,000 the Weismobile is more important than the steering of those pool cars

Its not about whether a PO teaches a class because we know there are stellar POs amongst us. Take the guys at TARA, they are knowledgeable and I would learn from them any day. What its about is that no doubt the PO selected to teach us is someone who probably has no street experience and probably has bs'd his entire career. If he/she has military experience that's a start but is it leadership experience? Many PO's have military experience like myself. We work the streets, helping our coworkers. To those POs that know their shit, we know who you are. I just hope its not a house mouse parading as an expert like the rest of crew in the ivory tower.

Howard signed off on his classes at the academy. The director of training can waive the requirements and petition the training board for his certificate. Despite all of the rumors, he is a certified law enforcement officer on paper and can carry a firearm. Clout takes care of clout.

Isn't there a minimum commitment to the department, I think it is three years after some major expense training or education. I hope this does not mean we are stuck with this, (learn to use this word in Isreal) SMUCK!

It wasn't a wasted day....a lot of it was quite humorous watching some of the high ranking officers who are in HORRIBLE physical condition try to accomplish the tasks at hand! One female Capt. in particular didn't even bother to comply with the jeans/gym shoes attire request; she arrived in a skirt and very high heels, and was reamed out by the staff for disregarding very clear instructions on what to wear and what would be expected of all who appeared.
