Unusual Military Callup
We have family who served or are serving in the military. We have friends and co-workers who have or are in the line of fire at this moment. We are vaguely familiar with a number of career tracks within the military. But the career of Shortshanks' son puzzles us:
Mayor Richard Daley said Tuesday that his son, Patrick, has been called back to active duty in the Army.
"My son had a responsibility to serve four years in the military," Daley said. "He's been redeployed, and so he will serve his country just like every other son and daughter of this country who does the same thing."
Patrick Daley was living in Moscow when he got word of his recent redeployment, said the mayor...
He comes, he goes, he leaves school, he serves, he leaves the country, he gets recalled, it's all very odd.

The only thing I could think of is this. After doing my 4 year hitch (which was actually an 8 year contract. 4 active 4 Inactive Reserve) about 2 years into Civilian life I received a letter from the DOD asking if I still had all my limbs and was still considered full duty. I replied, then I was told to report to Des Plaines, for a physical to be re activated. I went and they never did reactivate me, but I could have been.
Depending on his MOS (job) recalls from IRR happen all the time. The Army is hurting for certain skill levels.
When I was in Afghanistan they recalled a 63 year old dentist from the reserve IRR.

Young Fredo Daley went into the Army in December of 04. You incur an eight year service obligation. That makes him vulnerable to callup until December 2012.
All kinds of soldiers in various skills have been getting called back. Hell, they even call back cooks and have them serve as personal security to higher ranking officers.
I don't have any special insight into the specifics of his situation, but it is likely he just got called back.
The conspiracy theories are a bit much.
He went in and wanted to be Ranger qualified infantry. Apparently he never got past the Airborne course. Considering he was a tubby 29 year old a the time that isn't surprising or a disgrace.
From the little I gather from the media he took some language classes while in the Army. He clearly knows some Ruskie and maybe he has some knowledge of Middle Eastern languages too. I don't know.
Maybe there is more to it, but I doubt it.
That doesn't mean I don't think he and his papa aren't huge tools. They are.
They seem to think the City of Chicago exists for their benefit.

What a joke, I feel sorry for whatever kid did not get appointed to West Point, when they gave it to the prince instead. richie's kid has made a mockery of the military, IMHO, even though I am sure at some later date we will be told he was on some super-secret mission and it was all good.
Perhaps he got called up for the court martial. That would fit right in with his usual modus operendi.

Hopefully he gets interviewed by the FBI (usually republicans) and lies like hell and gets indicted. Police get fired for bullshit, imprisoned, suspended, call back, lives turned upside down, and on top of everything have our pension money stolen by daley's family and victimized by other daley crimes.Enough already. I think that a lot of you are making something out of nothing. EVERY person who enlists is subject to EIGHT years of obligation, whether it is 3 or 4 years of active duty, the rest of the time is in the inactive reserve, subject to recall at the govt. whim, The army usually goes for people who have been out for 2 years of less sothey are not as rusty. Nothing unusual about this. I really know nothing about this kid's military career, but I do know the army. What is unusual is that he did it! He had a good excuse being in Russia. He could have said at at later date that he had no knowledge of the call-up
What's sad is that his mother Maggie Daley is very ill, and yet Patrick still stayed in Moscow. Clearly he's afraid to come to Chicago. What's unclear is his purpose for being in Moscow, of all conceivable places. Since a beach on a warm island would be a better place to "chill-out", his choice must be based on extradiction policies. Now that he's recalled to military service, US bases are US territory, so Fitzgerald could extend the long-arm of the law to reach our most famous delinquent, Patrick.
Want to bet he stays out of the country until the statute of limitations is up.

How does a MBA from the University of Chicago go into the army as an E-4 and stay an E-4 for his entire hitch?
Even the biggest fuckups I met in the service took at least one promotion during their 4 years.
The fact he has an advanced degree and wasn't made at least an NCO is suspect. I know he went to West Point (for only a couple of months) but he must be a real knucklehead or a stone jagoff.

Dude, think before you type.
The DOD does not, will not, give info on individual soldier deployments or their duties.
And depending on MOS you may not even get an acknowledgement that they are in the service.
There is something else going on people. The only reason he is being "called back" is because daddy got the heads up on pending investigations regarding his sons dealings with the city. Why were we not informed when his duty was done, and who decides to live in Russia after wards. This guy is staying as far away from Chicago as he could for a reason. Do you honestly believe that he is serving in the front lines anywhere near a battle field. There is nothing that he can do to actually earn some respect. Patrick is probably sorting out incoming and outgoing mail a country distance away from the nearest gun battle. The guy is a total asshat just like his retarded father who failed his lawyers exam, and now hes the Da- mayor.
I'm guessing that his new "Permanent Duty Assignment" will be Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, or one of the military's other fine penal institutions if everyone is being this hush hush.....time will tell.

Isn't there something in the law that says an active duty soldier can't be sued in civil court? President Clinton tried to use it when he was president. His legal claim was that he couldn't be sued since he was the active Commander and Chief of the Armed Forces. This might have something to do with the recall.
This kid is in trouble, guaranteed. The military does not call lower enlisted's back to active duty for a 30 day period for any reason except to put them under the UCMJ.
Man, now I'm really wondering what junior has been up to......

I've been in the military 12 years and have plenty of friends in the reserves. And none of this makes sense! He got called up? Just him? Cause the president hasn't issued any recalls! And that works by complete units not just one guy. The last time it happened was when Bush ordered a recall to support Iraq. I would love too know what his reserve status is, IRR, SMCR? Does anyone know?

The DoD has really cut back on stop-loss and IRR callbacks. I'm wondering if something is coming down involving his son, and he's been told to lay low for awhile.
What better way than to say you've been called up and redeployed? Of course, if he has actually been called up, there would be a paper trail of orders, etc.
And if he hasn't been called up, and da Mayor is just blowing smoke up everybody's asses, then he's lower than whale shit.
In his press conference, he alluded to his son's callup as being some sort of hush-hush, confidential, secret squirrel mission.

He went direct to Infantry basic, airborne school and then was assigned to the 82nd.
If he took any language classes through the Army, he would have had to qualify through a DLAB and then gone to the Defense Language Institute out in Monterey, CA.
So, I call bullshit on the whole Russian language angle. That's about a year long course, and usually reserved for MI soldiers and officers going to serve as FAOs.
And if he has the English language skills of his dad, you can bet he doesn't have what it takes to study Russian. Qualifying and succeeding in studying any foreign language, especially a category 3 or 4 language such as Russian, is predicated on having a good grasp of your native language, in this case English.

actually, since his native language is daley-speak, picking up on soviet style mumbo jumbo should come naturally to him.
After I retired at the ripe old age of 43, I was, as a member of the Retired Reserve, subject to recall until the age of 55. Post 09/11/2001, I volunteered to return to active duty numerous times, but the Army had apparently decided it didn't need any crippled up old Armor (12/54) officers.
As for a "career" E-4, if he went into the service as an E-4, it's quite possible for him not to be promoted. Someone has to recommend an E-4 for the promotion board, and the CSMs, 1SGs, and SFCs who usually make up that board generally don't have much patience with dirtbags. I heard one 1SG tell a soldier, "Just do your time and go home, son."

Patrick Daley could have gone to Officer Candidate School when he enlisted.If he would have done that and graduated he would been assigned an platoon as a squad leader.The only problem of being an Officer or NCO in the 82nd Airborne,is that as such;you are expected to lead troops in combat. If Patrick Daley was really doing some secret squirrel shit for the US Army,Daddy Daley shouldnt be blabbing about it at a press conference.The truth will come out eventually.
