Earthquake!

A 4.3-magnitude earthquake hit the area this morning.

Thousands dead. City in ruins.

Oh. Wait. That's the normal state of affairs around here.

Never mind.

UPDATE: Quake downgraded to a 3.8

The "thousands dead" were actually a satellite shot of Burr Oaks Cemetery.

The "city in ruins" is Shortshanks' legacy of infrastructure neglect and chronic mismanagement.

The epicenter of the ensuing mudslides was the 5th floor at 121 N. LaSalle St.

Widespread fires are engulfing the West and South Sides.

The New Madrid fault line, as well as several others in the midwest, are overdue for a major "readjustment".

I was living in Monterey during the Loma Prieta quake in '89, and I hope I never expereience another one like that.

Scary stuff. Comes at you with no warning and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.

Kind of like life.

I like jokes just like the next guys but comparing what happened in Haiti to Chicago and joking about asking for aid,is a little over the top, even for a policemans sense of humor.

the parallels are spot on.

Yeah...just check your home insurance rates...the "earthquake zone" increases are now going to be justified.

Great...another thing we need to deal with having to live in the city.

What happened in the Chicago area had nothing to do with the faults in the New Madrid system. There was a stronger quake in 1968 on a set of faults in Southern Illinois quite a ways east of New Madrid, and another in 1987. They were part of the fault system in the buried rift zone under the Illinois Basin.

The Chicago mini-quake probably had something to do with the "complex faulted zone" noted on the geologic map of Illinois (issued by the Illinois Geologic Survey), west of Chicago. The fault systems of Northern Illinois are not well mapped, largely because they rarely slip.

Perhaps Daley's ass-crack propagated into the Niagra Limestone underlying the city and caused the quake.

It Can and Probably Will Happen Here, from Wikipedia

"The 1811 and 1812 New Madrid Earthquakes are the most intense intraplate earthquake series to have occurred in the contiguous United States in historic times, beginning with an initial pair of very large earthquakes on December 16, 1811. These earthquakes, as well as the seismic zone of their occurrence, were named for the Mississippi River town of New Madrid, Louisiana Territory, now Missouri.

There are estimates that the earthquakes were felt strongly over roughly 130,000 square kilometers (50,000 square miles), and moderately across nearly 3 million square kilometers (1 million square miles). The historic 1906 San Francisco earthquake, by comparison, was felt moderately over roughly 16,000 square kilometers (6,000 square miles)."

Stock-up on food, fuel and ammo we are going to be on our own.

Remember, Daley ain't Rudy Guiliani. And have you read what a mess the Obamaites have made when they over ruled the military on how the relief in Haiti was distributed.

The epicenter was 8 miles from our retirement home, thought we were getting away from the rockin and rollin of chicago! It was strange, heard a loud bang, then the house shook - woke us up. Yawn, then rolled over and went back to sleep - no alarms, you know.
