FOP Board Meeting Today

Different from the General Meeting, but since it's election day today, perhaps someone would like to show up and ask the Board how they managed to let an endorsement go through for a lawyer who defends people who shoot cops. The meeting is at 9 or 10 am we think.

Here's Mark Donahue's latest reply to a reader of ours when he asked how this happened:
  • It should be obvious that we didn't know. Gallagher came recommended from Police and Politicians alike. Had we heard from our members before the endorsement process began, I'm sure the outcome would be different. Gallagher has been out there campaigning since last June and no one came up with this info till this past Friday. He is running unopposed in the primary and we will be able to take corrective measures in the fall. Thanks for the input.
    Mark
So it's the memberships' fault the FOP didn't do their homework and they took recommendations from politicians and unnamed police officers? How do we know who's seeking the endorsement prior to them appearing before your committee?

Here's a clue Mark - politicians have axes to grind and agendas to pursue. You and your ticket were elected to look out for the members' interests. You seem to have failed - badly - and you want to blame the membership? Did you even ask the membership if they had any experiences with those seeking the FOP endorsement? We didn't see a list of names in the newsletter or the website.

Once a lawyer dips their beak into defending those who would murder us, there's really no return to our good graces. The same might be said for those who endorse those same lawyers.

The FOP didn't do their homework either on the Behaviorial Program some of the officers were put on for nothing. Those officers were apologized by the department with the department ruining and tainting the lives of the officers. And the FOP didn't do anything to seek any compensation at all for the officers. And yet, all the officers paid the union dues to the FOP. The FOP turned their back on those officers. Thanks a lot for caring FOP. Thanks a lot in case you did'nt hear me loud and clear the first time. The officers that got put into the program are still out here FOP. Not forgetting.

Ok, hold on. I agree it was a mis-step for the FOP to endorse this guy. But in you're thread it sounds as if you're calling their whole term a failure. I do actually believe they have accomplished more during their tenure than any other team. Does anyone disagree?
They made a mistake with this one endorsement and maybe from here on out it will force them to come up with a better way of picking candidates they say we are backing.
They should put the list of possible candidates on the web and let people comment on them and tell their stories of dealings with them. Maybe it would need to be done discretely as the mud would start to fly. But at least it's a start.

We get $600 a year for wellness money. The FOP sponsors the health fair and they charge you the entire $600 to draw your blood and take your blood pressure. They try to get you for more out of pocket on top of that. Walgreens just sent me a coupon to take the same test at half off for $30. That means they usually charge $60 for the same test FOP's Group is charging us $600 for. Where is the rest of that money going? FOP, explain that!

Just voted. Gallagher's name is on the ballot (running unopposed). Underneath his name is a space for a write-in candidate. So I wrote in "Kevin Keefe" (the name of the Officer who was shot) and voted for him. It may not do much, and it may be too late, but if everybody puts Kevin's name in as a write-in, maybe this jagbag will realize who he's screwing with.

Ok, while I'm not an FOP fan, I don't hate them either.
Did they screw up? Yes.
Was it intentional? Don't think so.
My theory is ALL of us are smarter than ONE of us. With that in mind WE should try and come up with a safeguard to prevent this in the future, and then share OUR info with FOP.
Again, not defending the FOP but there were two Gallaghers that were attorneys with the same names.
Unfortunately, the bad guy was the one running for judge.
I'm headed out now to vote and the wife and I will make sure 'we' vote NO on Gallagher and Edelstein, just to mention a few.
Stay safe my brothers...

I was in the Teamsters union before and although it wasn't perfect it was a hell of a lot better than FOP. We need a Teamsters union representing the police. If we had the Teamsters union you wouldn't have had half the shananagins that got pulled. I have noticed a lot of comments on that behaviorial program this month. Guys I know, good guys, got placed in that program. Those guys should have never got placed in that program at all because they did get apology letters. Apology letters. Big deal. The Teamsters would have torn the department a new one and MADE the department give monetary compensation to the victims. And they were victims. Who knows how they really were affected by such a program. Their constitutional rights were violated. That is a fact, So that means a wrong has to be righted. Second City Cop do you have any input on this at all? FOP = Failure of Police.

FOP has also stated they are against that. FOP please do your homework. Many of the endorsed candidates have baggage. Your endorsment is precious, take it seriously.

Remember there are SPIES at all open FOP meetings!

There will be Blue Shirts there who work for Gold Stars, they may be sent there by Gold Stars, they will be making reports, formal or informally to Gold Stars.

This may be a First Amendment Rights violation if they report what is said at a Labor Union meeting to Management.

Of course they will put their own spin on anything said there, they may have an axe to grind with someone somewhere.

Be careful of what you say, the walls have ears.

Vote the current FOP board out! 32 months with no NEW CONTRACT. That is to put it simply. RIDICULOUS! We honestly can't do any worse than these idiots!
---------------------------------
This is such a misinformed statement, that to put it simply it is ridiculous! Do you have the slightest clue what a negotiation is ? A union cannot force management to bargin in good faith.Especially one that has a no strike clause. All a union can do is bring it's issues to the table and what cannot be resolved will be given to an arbitraitor.

What members should be up in arms about is the FLSA ruling. What should have been a great benefit for us has turned in to a loss by going to binding arbitration.Regarding the decision handed down by Benn on 09 Dec 2009,no one can give a straight answer on this ruling. The FOP officers are either unsure of what the ruling means, are embarrassed and want to keep it quiet,or sold their soul's to the devil. The timekeepers do not know what it means. In the FOP newsletter they barley touched on it and did not explain it's impact. It says all FLSA hours worked in excess of 171 hours will be paid in cash. FLSA time is the time you are actually at work.Does it mean that if you work 30 hours of overtime in a period and are compensated at time and one half equalling 45 hours you get paid for the 30 and can put the 15 hours towards comp time? Or does it mean the following? Some periods you work 160 hours. So excluding holidays you could only get 11 hours of comp time in that period. In a period where you work 140 hours for example you could get 31 hours of comp time. Any hours exceeding 171 you will be forced to take money. Either way we have lost a great benefit, this was big concern to the city, paying out huge amounts when officers retire. This will lead to no more retiring with thousands of hours. It will also lead to no more selling back bfd and pdays because you will have to use them. As the department continues to downsize they have eliminated a manpower problem by insuring that you will be at work because you will have no accumalated time left to take off. This could lead to medical abuse which could in turn lead to losing our sick leave benefit.

So the question is did FOP after winning every appeal by the city to the FLSA ruling in the courts make a huge mistake by going to and losing binding arbitration and effectivley giving up our contractual right to choose money or time. Or did they intentionally sell out the membership for personal gain.It is well known that Mark Donahue is lobbying to become a lobbyist.VP Bill Dougherty's name was on the grievance that went to arbitration. You can read the ruling on the FOP web site. I would like to see SCC do a thread on this. Maybe you did and I missed it. Also the duty trade benefit which was supposed to be unlimited like CFD is limited to 1 day per period and the time constraints to get it accomplished are unworkable.

To borncynical at 2/03/2010 01:28:00 PM. Re: FLSA. Having been away for a few years now I don't know just what the arbitration is about, but just to clarify FLSA time, it is time that exceeds 171 hours worked in any 4 week period. Again I don't know about the new 4 on 2 off, and I'm not interested enough to figure it out, but under the old system you normally worked 160 hours in a 4 week period, so any hours ACTUALLY WORKED in excess of 171 is FLSA time. That does not include time for holidays or an time not actually worked. You also have to subtract from the time worked any bonus days that you take off such as: time due, day off holiday, personal day or BF Day. Each of those puts you 8 more hours from the 171 needed to get to FLSA. From what I have read her, I gather that the city can now elect to pay you time and a half for any FLSA time, but that is more or less speculation on my part. The FOP shuld be able to explain. Ask your unit rep, he/she should know. If he/she does not insist that he/she find out.

NO and NO. Also your conclusion that officers cannot retire with thousands of comp time hours is wrong as well. The only thing "lost" is the FLSA comp time bank, which was ALWAYS limited BY LAW to a max of 480 hours. No one ever had more than 480. The other comp time bank, where you CAN accumulate 1000s of hours, remains intact and unlimited. Get it straight. Keep your bullshit off the internet. People might think it's true.
