The Beginning of the End

  • Chicago's longstanding ban on handguns within city limits will go before the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, in a case that will have serious legal ramifications nationwide.

Handguns have been outlawed in Chicago for 28 years. But in 2008, in District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court reversed a handgun ban in Washington, D.C., emboldening gun-rights activists to challenge the Chicago law. Suburban Oak Park, which has even stronger gun legislation, is also involved in the lawsuit.

A number of local media outlets are still quoting Daley's inanities about banning guns reduces violence, somehow missing the fact that in the 48 states with concealed carry or shall-issue laws experienced double-digit reductions in violent crime and even bigger drops in property crime. Gun laws only affect the law abiding and do nothing to stop a criminal who is already intent on breaking the law.

A ruling should be handed down around June.

"A ruling should be handed down around June".

This bit of good news should coincide nicely with the news of us getting a decent contract and retroactive pay.

What's better news is that this combination may be the catalyst to Shortshanks' long overdue cardiac arrest.

From what I can decipher from Daley and our semi-literate media, the core of the City arguement seems to be that the Constitution of the United States only applies in Federal Territory like D.C., not in Chicago.
Didn't we have a 'discussion' with 11 southern states over that?

I saw Daley talking about reasonable gun laws should be the law of the land on tonight's news. Reasonable doesn't mean total ban you scrotum.

Food for thought,

How about Bobby Lopez showing up and ironing out his differences with J-Fed in front of all of us?

No holds barred, truth be told cage match.

Bobby,

You have nothing to lose now. You were sandbagged and ambushed. Utilize the advantage and strike now before it is too late.

There is nothing like having an audience rooting you on either.

mr kersey, your table is ready.... most people who want a gun already have one in their home and could care less about the city of chicago's law which bans ownership of handguns which were not registered prior to 1980------

did anyone read j-fed's quote in todays suntimes (tues 02march). Police Supt. Jody Weis added, “Every time there’s a domestic disturbance, we [will] have to assume there’s a gun.” weis said this in response to the supreme possibly overturning chicago's handgun ban. hhmmmmm i guess a real street cop would know that you handle every call like there's a gun there or could be there

All I have to say is, you'd be surprised of the number of people that actually do own guns. And I'm talking about law-abiding citizens.

Daley, get with it.

Don't be surprised if the Supreme Court gives a obfuscated mixed ruling. Sort of like about abortion. On the one hand the wise justices will say "yes indeed you certainly have the right to have a firearm for your personal protection but it must be weighed against the interests of the state. A state if they choose to can make reasonable (they always love that word that can mean so many things to so many different people) regulations". There you have it. So don't expect major changes anytime soon.

Don't worry, they just make owning a handgun a pain in the ass. You'll have to register it, you'll have to have a city approved storage container, and it must be stored broken down and unloaded.

Does anyone know of a case where anyone went to jail on just the handgun ordinance? I'm not talking about with a UUW or no FOID card, just the ordinance. Even the old registration ordinance put no one in jail.

Have the required FOID card and f**k 42 extra short. You may loose the gun but not your life, and there will be no jail.

God Bless Mr. McDonald.

my guess is that the SCOTUS will strike down the city's ban on handguns...then shortshanks and his band of fools will pass regs re: registration, security, etc.; if those are onerous (likely to be so), then folks wil have to take him to court again....why not just vote this clown out?

D.C. tried that and it didn't work. They also tried to ban semi-automatics so citizens could only have revolvers but that also back fired.

OT - but if you are interested in healthcare:

Section 1011, Federal Reimbursement of Emergency Health Services Furnished to Undocumented Aliens, provides $250 million per year for fiscal years (FY) 2005-2008 for payments to eligible providers for emergency health services provided to undocumented aliens and other specified aliens. Two-thirds of the funds will be divided among all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on their relative percentages of undocumented aliens. One-third will be divided among the six states with the largest number of undocumented alien apprehensions.

From the respective state allotments, payments will be made directly to hospitals, certain physicians, and ambulance providers for some or all of the costs of providing emergency health care required under Section 1867 and related hospital inpatient, outpatient and ambulance services to eligible individuals. Eligible providers may include an Indian Health Service facility whether operated by the Indian Health Service or by an Indian tribe or tribal organization. A Medicare critical access hospital (CAH) is also a hospital under the statutory definition. Payments under Section 1011 may only be made to the extent that care was not otherwise reimbursed (through insurance or otherwise) for such services during that fiscal year.

Payments may be made for services furnished to certain individuals described in the statute as: 1) undocumented aliens; 2) aliens who have been paroled into the United States at a United States port of entry for the purpose of receiving eligible services; and 3) Mexican citizens permitted to enter the United States for not more than 72 hours under the authority of a biometric machine readable border crossing identification card (also referred to as a "laser visa") issued in accordance with the requirements of regulations prescribed under a specific section of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Ben Franklin, who today would be thought of as a fanatic once said " Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. A republic is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." If the second Amendment is only there to protect the national guard the fourth Amendment is only there to protect the governors mansion.

I reside in the city of Chicago. I always have had a handgun in my home. I ended up inheriting guns from deceased relatives and in- laws. My mom even gave me my dad's
only pistol, a .25 cal. Colt. That was 35 yrs ago. I recieved some weapons exposure while in service. I could field strip a .45 cal. but not now. I want to go to the range and practice but I have a special needs child so my time is not my own. I suppose if the ban is lifted I would finally get a Glock17. Around 1982 my cousin and I would briefly shoot my grandfathers .22 Erma-Werke mauser rifle (traded to FOID holder) at garbage can lids from the back porch of the 6 flat under the "L" in district 02. Thinking back, no officers ever responded. Yes, it was stupid. I have not fired any weapons in the city since that time. If the ban is overturned Chicago could become much safer. I'm from an old police family and the rule is: assume there could be a weapon on every call.

I did. They call you six times a week asking for money.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am veteran CPD nearing retirement. I have owned guns, illegally, in Chicago for many years. My decision. I will leave Cook County and already have a home to which I will retire. Guns are legal there. For me it is win/win. I will break any law that affects my God-given rights, and will continue to do so. I'm a "cold dead fingers" kind of guy.

Maybe now Superintendent Weis, who always claims he is for the police officers, will embrace retired concealed carry and open the department ranges for qualification? Weis as a retired federal agent is eligible for retired concealed carry. He should come out now and make a statement either for or against. Then, lets see what he does when he finally retires? Does he have the guts??
